Jermaine Stewart started out as a Soul Train dancer and was in the running to be a part of the Soul Train-inspired vocal group, Shalamar. He later met Mikey Craig of Culture CLub and sang backup with them on their major hit, "Miss Me Blind". "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off" song came out a couple of years later in the mid-1980s as AIDS was making everybody (understandably) paranoid about sex. The message definitely resonated, because the casual sex of the early 80s club scene was suddenly a terrifying prospect. In a cruel twist of irony, he lost his own life to complications from AIDS in 1997. "...Clothes Off" (US#5) was his only major US Hot100 hit, though "Jody" and "Say It Again" found success on the R&B and Dance charts.

Another banger from the 80's is D-Train "You're The One For Me" had that funky 8o's bass style that you both love so much. Definitely a party starter.

Our parents didn't have to push this one on us. It was on EVERY radio station as soon as you turned the dial. It was a HUGE hit. Also, Jermaine made this song in response to so many of his contemporaries dying of AIDS. Sadly, he couldn't escape the disease himself.

Thanks, Jay & Amber. Yup, this song was a popular! You heard it everywhere and while it’s not my favorite Jermaine Stewart tune (“The Word Is Out” is), I was happy for his crossover success (something that wasn’t always easy for black artists in the 80’s).

Me and my partner met Jermaine at the Xenon nightclub in London back in 1984, for the Blues’n’Soul magazine awards. He was such a nice and sweet guy. Earlier in the club we both met Freddie Mercury and told Jermaine that. And he was so excited to try and meet Freddie. My partner got both of their autographs on the same page. Also at Xenon that night was Paul Weller and Mick Talbot from the Style Council. Andrew Ridgeley from Wham. Jefferey Daniel from Shalamar and Jefferey Osborne. Great 80’s memories.

So a little history from an old man who was there. This was during the HIV/AIDS scare in the 80’s. They had cute and no good treatment. Most who caught it would die. So a big push for ‘safe sex’ was made. That’s where the term started. This was Jermaine basically singing that we don’t have to have sex to have fun. He was doing his part.

I love you 2. Just started yesterday watching. I know you guys love Prince, saw him twice. When he sang Purple Rain , I cried. Don't know if you know this but Prince wrote many songs for other artists. One happens to be I Feel for you Chaka Kon ( my spelling sucks sorry). He wrote some under the name Christopher Star and other names. He was fantastic. Miss Prince Rogers Nelson . If you haven't seen Purple Rain you have to watch it, you will be so happy you did❤

Jermaine was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. We grew up with him here in Columbus Ohio before his career took off. He was a little older and hung out with my cousins. Shalimar was out of Dayton so we got to see them a lot as well as Rodger Troutman, and George Clinton who was out of Cincinnati. My mother worked at George Clinton's Beauty Salon when she was younger. Ohio has a very rich musical history.

The producer behind this also produced other BIG pop hits in the 80s. Mr Narada Michael Walden. From the first time I heard this as a teenager, the production of this song struck me as being super positive, bright and a total ear-worm. When you discover he also produced Whitney Houston "How Will I Know" (1985), I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990) and "I'm Every Woman" (1992). As well as Aretha Franklin's Who's Zoomin' Who? (1985) all of which have his signature style just like Jermaine's track which was reacted to beautifully here !
