    This game, man. This game. It saved me. Three years ago I was at my lowest and darkest point, where I was a wreck and felt like I was nothing. In my depression, I decided to rebuy splatoon 2 since I lost it once when it first came out, and I’m so glad I did. The campaigns made me feel accomplished. They made me feel happy, something I hadn’t felt in a long time. I cried at the end of octo expansion because it made me feel like I did something great. It made me pick myself back up, and I will forever be indebted to it. This game means the world to me, and I’m so happy to now call Splatoon my absolute favorite Nintendo series.

      With the post-game upates, the Salmon Run is always open, and the gear frequently rotates (weekly I think?) in the order they were originally released and looping back to the top. So at least in that regard there is no unobtainable gear you can miss fron not having played samon run during its original seasons.

    Awesome review! Might I suggest for the inevitable Splatoon 3 review in a few year, the multiplayer "completion" criteria being "getting to A rank in all modes" and for salmon run "getting to Profreshonal" Those two things are well within anyone's skill level and depending on your general video game literacy (which... well I've seen you blow me outta the water in several games, so I know you're a damn maestro with the sticks) can be accomplished in a week or two

  • @FrostGlader
    @FrostGlader 2 роки тому +18

    Regarding Salmon Run, it’s actually pretty easy to get all the Gear: they aren’t gone forever once they’re gone.
    The key is the Capsules. They come in four colours, and I believe the Pink ones actually have VERY different prizes from the others, containing exclusively older Gear, rather than respective prize or money, or otherwise _just_ money for the Yellow ones, and ever since they stopped adding in new ones (RIP Octoleete set), the Gear pieces have been rotating in and out over time. This includes that one piece that was part of a collaboration. The Pink Capsule isn’t in Splatoon 3 yet, on account of there literally being only one Piece currently, being the BttF2 looking hat.
    Bit of a shame Splatoon hasn’t had all that many Collabs period, the Squid Girl set from the first game was awesome, and it’s criminal that Japanese Players got exclusive gear that the Western releases couldn’t ever get.

    • @Tailzy26

      Heck, that late-release Mech Armour is incredible and I only recently saw it in-game, before I migrated to Splat 3.
      Hopefully they get their butts into gear and not distribute that gear via Japanese only codes, and instead via the App, preferably via Wandercrust.

    The cosmetics in Salmon Run rotate in a set pattern. If you miss one, you can wait the soul crushingly 25 shifts for it to loop back around. Sucks, but all the gear is eventually obtainable. Alternatively, the pink gacha capsules you earn contain a random salmon run gear (including the ones you may have already missed!)

    Splatoon is one of those games where I actually love the multiplayer. Unlike games like Call of Duty or evken Battlefield. In those games I feel lie I have to be competitive taking away from the fun and enjoyment. The chaotic nature of Splatoon, the style and music just make for a fun game, no matter if I win by a large portion or lose by less than 1% map coverage. I can just sit back and have a good time with my friends.

  • @ezrafaulk3076
    @ezrafaulk3076 2 роки тому +1

    I'm honestly surprised you didn't mention the *lore* Jirard; unlike *other* shooter games, Splatoon actually has some *interesting* lore that Nintendo is only *expanding* on with each new entry. The whole *point* of the Octo expansion was to expand on the lore of the Octarians and show that they *aren't* truly evil! I'd honestly say that's a *tragic* oversight on your part.
    Also, the Splatoon franchise holds a special place in my heart because the first game released on my *birthday* and I actually got it as a *present* ; alas, in *spite* of this, I probably *won't* be getting Splatoon 3 because in the middle of Splatoon 2's life cycle, Nintendo made the "brilliant" decision to have the multiplayer battles you *have* to participate in to level up and unlock all the cool equipment *require* a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to participate in *at all* , making the game cost *way* more than the base price tag. Not to mention that no matter *how* many times I send them in for repair or replacement, my Joy-con keep degrading to uncontrollable drift levels *way* too quickly, so I couldn't play the game properly even if I *did* buy into the subscription. It *sucks* because I wanna experience *everything* Splatoon 3 has to offer, but I know I *can't* thanks to the *paywall* that is the the Nintendo Switch Online subscription requirement for multiplayer battles; so is it strange that I'm still trying to avoid spoilers for Splatoon 3's story mode, "Return of the Mammalians"?
    PS: When it comes to art direction, I honestly think Nintendo went a *brilliant* direction with the Inklings and Octolings' designs; they really *do* just seem like squids and octopi that've evolved humanoid forms to live on land rather than the monster people we occasionally see in anime despite having tentacles and/or arms on their heads instead of hair, the natural mascara around their eyes, and the teeth still reminiscent of cephalopod beaks. You've *gotta* admire that!

  • @KirbyKips
    @KirbyKips 2 роки тому +1

    I’ll be honest, I stayed away from Splatoon since, like Jirard, I struggle a lot with multiplayer games and shooters. I’ve always felt like getting into games like this means you have to learn quickly to catch up to the pros and have your head on a constant swivel or you’ll die all the time.
    I finally buckled down and played Splatoon 3 and I absolutely love it. To my surprise, I actually learned really quickly how to survive in battles and can actually hold my own in one-on-one battles against other teams. It honestly feels…fair? I really like that! Even though I’m fighting against people who’ve played longer than me, i still feel like I’m on equal ground in terms of equipment and weapons.
    I understand why there’s so much love for this franchise now and I feel really bad that I wasn’t there to experience 1 or 2 sooner.

    I appreciate that the base game's campaign wasn't necessarily bad, but it left me feeling unfulfilled as someone who played the first game. I don't remember the stages having that much variety to stand out from either each other, or the first game, and the final boss itself seemed like a retread of the first game's final boss, but worse somehow.
    Octo Expansion was closer in line to what I had hoped for from a sequel, and I think even now it's probably the best campaign out of all 3 games. Getting to see, and even fight the protagonist of the first game was incredible. It's on the expansion pass now, and if you can pick up a cheap copy of Splatoon 2, I'd say its definitely worth the price just for the dlc campaign.

    yeah completing 1000% of the main campaign is a real pain, i did it years ago and i was just glad it was over because it truly overstays its welcome.
    octo expansion does a better job at offering 1 to 3 options per stage, and the options themselves to be actually optimized for the stage itself, and 3 follows the same structure from what ive played so far

  • @ProChara
    @ProChara 2 роки тому +1

    Personally I hate the 1000% hero mode experience, and I say this as a super fan who did go through that process. To me designing a stage around 9 varied weapons needing to complete it made the level design and even bosses more bland then they could have. This is definetly more of a now that I have played Splatoon 3 looking back this felt worse thing, but I agree it got old. I think Octo Expansion did a good 1000% idea since its only a few weapons the stage is built around, and in general felt more varried. However of course that's DLC, I think Splatoon 3's story mode is a big step up and feels better to 100/1000% but Splatoon 2's especially in Octo Expansion are still good in their own way.

    You could kinda "beat" multiplayer by holding the #1 X rank position on every mode, which isn't realistically achievable unless you are literally one of the best players in the world.

    I would consider that the online part of Splatoon 2 has a finish line to cross.
    1st rankeds: reaching X rank on all modes giving you a wide view of what online offers.
    2nd max hazard level on salmon run: doing at least one of these is not forgiving but can be achieved thanks to grizzco weapons.
    3rd weapons: acquire all weapons is an easy task, the boring part are hero weapons which you already unlocked.
    There are more goals to Splatoon 2 like the little badges that they give you for painting A LOT with a weapon, reaching top 500 on ranked battles and getting all clothes. However badges are tedious and uses up a lot of your time, X power resets every month and some of the clothes are region locked so I wouldn't count these as completion goals.

    15:40 Feel like you got a couple things wrong. First, yeah it was the case that the salmon run rewards changed each month for as long as the game received updates, but it was still possible to get out-of-season gear through the pink reward capsules; And then later as the updated stopped the gear changed for each salmon run rotation, making it even more obtainable. It has never been impossible to get all of the salmon run gear.
    And then you failed to mention rank altogether. Salmon run lets you go up to Profreshional 999, However, each rotation resets your rank down to 400 if you go over it, making it in that sense, actually incompletable.

    Nintendo definitely needs to push the single-player side of Splatoon. The movement is so good, it could easily be on par with Mario or Donkey Kong, but I think they just don't want it to compete with those IPs

    All hero modes level cleared with every weapon and all collectibles found
    All octo expansion levels cleared with every weapon and secret boss defeated
    Very weapon and gear pieces bought
    All gold badges for every weapon
    All squid beats song cleared with a gold medal
    Slamon run rank at profreshional 999
    Every ranked battle in rank x
    Reach Level 99 star once

    I definitely feel you when it comes to Splatoon as a franchise. I enjoy the single player quite a bit, but then when it transitions over to the multiplayer. . . It just really isn't my jam, so to speak. And at least for me, it's felt like the transition between Splatoon 1 and 2 has been more a case of "Splatoon 1, Splatoon 1.5", in that it's pretty gosh darned similar in far too many ways to be a full sequel, it feels more just like a big DLC pack that takes away stuff from earlier. (I was never terribly fond of the Supers in Splatoon 2, compared to 1.)
    But, overall, I did enjoy my time with Splatoon 2, even if its biggest selling point didn't work too well for me. Also, Salmon Run being locked behind a limited availability ALWAYS felt stupid, and still does to this day. Don't tell me when I'm allowed to play my own game, Nintendo! That's just ridiculous!
    That aside, keep up the great work, Jirard. Can't wait for the next video.

    I finally got around to picking up Splatoon 2 a couple months ago ( as well as recently finally picking up Mario Kart 8 DX...I still have the Wii U version so I really fought myself on the double dip for quite while ), and aside from becoming hopelessly distracted by Xenoblade 3 the variety mentioned regarding Splatoon 2's single player mode has also kind of been what's made me take a hiatus from it. As cool as it is that you're not restricted to the Hero Shot the whole time, I'm just not any good with certain weapons....so being required to use a specific weapon for each stage becomes more of a frustrating chore for me ( I'm almost done with sector 3, with just 1 stage & the boss left... ) :/ and hearing some of the challenges in Octo Expansion has me thinking I might be better off just watching a playthrough ( which I was planning to do anyway along with the main story once I finished it )...
    I also 2nd that desire for a straight up Splatoon platformer....

    I honestly can't wait for a video on Splatoon 3. Most Splatoon players admit the single player for Splatoon 1 and 2 is kind of mediocre. The Octo Expansion was praised for being a huge upgrade from the previous single player experiences, and after 100%ing the story mode for Splatoon 3, I'd have to say it's the best single player campaign in the series. We don't even have any info on the DLC for Splatoon 3 either, so I'm super excited to see where that goes.

    Nah, the winner team is the one that splats more.
    No question about it. A beginner getting slatted every 10 seconds leaves a lot more enemy ink behind than what they can cover and allows the other team to charge into your territory and take more color.

    • @jardex2275
      @jardex2275 2 роки тому

      Splat 3 really changed that. Pretty much all the launch stages have multiple levels to them, which works well for long range weapons. The new stages also have limited entry points into the enemy base (AKA a single bridge), which can make pushing too deep a risky move if someone is guarding it.

    Hey, Shadow the Hedgehog was mentioned in this episode. Jirard, you should complete it. Fair warning though, apparently to fully complete it you need to go through the game multiple times taking each and every path. Each path is even named, so you can keep track of which ones you did and which you haven't.

      @@MysteriousJojo Depends on how he judges it. There are 10 different endings, plus a true ending.
      There are 24 levels, some with multiple objectives. Beating each objective once would be a solid goal.
      Between the branching levels, there are 326 possible paths, each individually named. The path chosen doesn't affect the ending as long as the same final stage and boss is reached. I'd say that's overkill, but there technically is a library that chronicles every possible path.
      Personally, I'd say beat every objective once, getting every ending, and getting the true ending is enough for a Completionist. But this is the guy who tried, and gave up, on going through every romance path in Persona 5 to get one unique item each run.
