  • This thing took me by surprise.
    Better than a Eotech? probably not. But very competitive in the same or similar niche.

    I think Holosun is becoming one of the best optics companies out there. They are making products that are incredibly good value for money/quality. They almost all work well, they have changed the game in terms of features, and they are one of the few red dot companies that actually makes a red dot that doesn't bloom and starburst horribly because of my astigmatism. I have two Holosuns right now and am going to be buying more in the future.

    7:18 What's weird is the green version has a lot less distortion than the red version. I checked out both in-store today, and the green version is much less distorted. Both their display models and some boxes myself and the salesperson looked at showed the same thing. The green version also has a much nicer tint to the glass. The red version is a bit of a blue hue. The green version has a bit of red hue in the center, but you only notice it if pointed at a white wall. The green version is significantly better than red.

      Having an astigmatism (certain eye condition) can make an optics “red” dot appear blurry or smeared due to the color red overloading the cones in your eye and “bleeding” together.

    • @AndyAdventuring
      @AndyAdventuring 9 місяців тому +1

      @@makeeverydaycinematic I have astigmatism, but red vs green seems to make no difference. This was the primary reason I was testing both. While doing so, I noticed the red dot optic had a relatively blue window and the green optic did not. The glass on the green optic also did not distort the view as much. The employee at the gun shop opened a few more boxes so we could see if it was simply the 1 optic, but the same pattern was seen in all of them.

      Totally agree. If you are using it for the range and will always be dead center behind the optic save money and get holosun with more convenience features like the solar panel and longer battery life, less weight. All around better for the purpose.
      If it's for defense or competitive shooting and you could be shooting from awkward positions then parallax shift is an issue. The point of a red dot now becomes speed over comfort and an EOTech or other optic with low parallax becomes worth that extra money.
      So neither is bad. Just great optics for different purposes.

    I want to like eotech, but I always end up going holosun. The emiters on eotechs are worse for my astigmatism, and they just dont look crisp in general. No auto on/off so its already bad batter is a pain having to babysit the on setting. No backup solar just in case. Is heavy, and takes up unideal railspace than I like to use with my 6x magnifier. Also dang eotecch why cant you let me just have a dot not the donut all the time only.
    See very little reason to get the eotech over say the aems which I have now (and 507c acss, 510c). Only thing would be battle proven hardiness, but that isnt that big a deal compared to everything else, and how the aems already seems pretty solid (especially with now the passive covers).

    The 510c is an Eotech killer. For that matter Eotech is an Eotech killer. Junk sights that break constantly. Terrible buttery life (comparatively), blurry reticle, overpriced. There are numerous weapon sights that are better in almost every category.

      I spent years wanting an EOtech because of all the hype and mass amount of love they go on UA-cam. Once I actually looked through one at the store, I thought to myself, "I don't get the hype, they're a blurry mess and the battery life is literally trash"... So, I got the 510C and I'm super happy with it. I'm probably going to pick up the closed emitter version next so I can build out a SHTF gun.

  • @markhudson6587
    @markhudson6587 2 роки тому +2

    Would the Holosun 510C be as good an option as the AEMS even though the 510C has an open emitter? Is having a closed emitter worth paying $150 more? I live in Utah, so rain and mud isn't going to be a huge problem. So would the 510C be ok for where I live? Or do you still prefer the enclosed emitter like the AEMS?

    • @keggerous
      @keggerous Рік тому

      The open emitter isn't nearly as big of a deal breaker as people make it out to be. yes, it is something you need to think about when in a muddy environment but it's not something that's going to stop you in your tracks the moment you get a bit of gunk on your gun.
      I took my gun, with the 510C, on a two-week camping trip and I found it to be perfectly fine the entire time. I was hiking all day with it. It rained several days I was out there, and I never had an issue. That being said, I did bring a little brush that fit in that emitter area well enough to brush it out. I also brought a few Q-tips to clean it out too. I never used any of this stuff though.
      I am probably going to pick up the closed emitter version though sometime in the future. I primarily use my current 12.5 build as a house/neighborhood gun. It's not meant to be out in the field or mud all that much. I'm building another AR though that is going to be for a SHTF event, and I want a closed emitter for that gun.

To get the EOTech's reticle even half as crisp as the Holosun, I have to spend a moment longer to force my eyes to focus so strenuously to the point that I get cross-eyed. I don't believe the EOTech is ideal for home defense anyways. I need my HD optic to either stay on 24/7, or have motion-activated power on.

    Hey there, really enjoy your videos. Of course, it's always easier to talk about where you disagree than where you agree. In that spirit, I will have to say I disagree with your comment, "Having auto-off is better than just having a super-long battery life." From the very first time I ever heard of auto-off, I thought, "Well, that's going to be a problem. Any time you add complexity to circuitry, you introduce a possible failure point." Maybe there are optics out there with great auto-off/shake-awake capability. I will say, my Delta Point Pro began randomly turning itself off after about 300 rounds through a Glock 17. The replacement began doing the exact same thing after 3,000 rounds. Not a fan of auto-off/shake-awake, I see them as a possible failure point, and really just a lame attempt to get around the fact an optic has, on a basic level, poor battery life. What can I say, I am a slave to my experiences. I avoid anything that has an auto-off/shake-awake feature; sign me up for the super-long-at-constant-on battery life.

    • @BrassFacts
      @BrassFacts  Рік тому +1

      that's fair. Granted, the deltapoint isn't very good.
      It's also worth noting that most optics have a auto off tied into the existing circuitry, and it's designed to piggyback off of existing systems. It's technically a new system, but in quite a minimal way
      In theory I actually agree with you. But there's realistic almost no optics that have amazing multi year battery life.
      Most are lying to you.

      @@BrassFacts. I conducted an experiment a few years ago with a Trijicon RMR-06, which claims a five-year battery life. But read the fine print, that five-year battery life is with the sight set on brightness-level 4, which is way too dim for operating in any sort of light that might be termed "bright." Generally, I run an RMR on 5. There is a huge jump in brightness between 4 and 5 on an RMR-06. Which, of course, logically means a far greater power drain. I was curious how long the battery in an RMR-06 would last with the sight set at a realistic brightness level.
      On November 11, 2017, I installed a brand-new 2032 into the RMR-06, put it on brightness setting 5, and just left it on, in order to see how long it would take before the battery died. To start with, of course, I was checking it literally every day; after a while, when the novelty wore off, it became less frequent.
      On November 11, 2019, two years to the day later, I checked the sight, the dot was still there, still bright. Two weeks later, when I checked it again, the battery was dead. So, in answer to the question, "How long will a fresh 2032 battery in a Trijicon RMR-06 last with the brightness level set to 5?" I can say, "In my testing, two years."
      So, I'm not going to say Trijicon was lying to me, it would not at all surprise me to learn that, at level 4, a single 2032 will, in fact, last five years. Obviously, they chose a low setting in order to make the battery life sound more impressive. Still, I will say that two years of battery life, with constant-on at a usable brightness setting, doesn't suck.
      Discussing the matter with my buddy Ken Hackathorn, he has commented that, in a desert, or in areas like the mountains of Idaho where he lives, taking into account the glare off snow for months out of the year, the RMR needs to have its dot brightness maxed in order to be visible outside. The feedback Ken has received from people who live in deserts is that the battery dies in about seven months of constant-on. In that case, I would say the battery should be replaced every six months. That's still a usable amount of battery life, though obviously not as impressive as when running the sight at a lower power drain.
