  • Hey everyone today we're talking about Lizard Skin. Lizard Skin offers a variety of products but specially we're looking at if they're a good material for sound deadening and insulation. We are giving our honest opinions about this product and how it fares compared to other van build methods.
    If you're curious with how we sound deaden and insulate our Vans check out our video on that below:

    I love the full disclosure you gave. 😂 Really looking forward to seeing how the temperature gain is affected by that product.

    So it stops the heat but does it work as a vapor barrier as well

    Snake oil. That OEM 350 buried in a wall will add to the overall insulating properties, but not by much. Commercially available insulation coatings have values of thermal conductivities in the range of 0.035 to 0.120 W/mK. As one can see from the units, the conductivity is a function of thickness (m), just like every other material. 3M Thinsulate has a thermal conductivity of 0.039 W/mK. What's going to be better, 3 mm of 0.035 W/mK or 38 mm (1.5") of 0.039 W/mK. I know what I'm sticking with! And the best place for any coating with high reflectivity and low emissivity like OEM 350 is on a free surface, inside or outside depending on use case. If a reflective surface does not have a significant gap (20+ mm) in front of it, it is useless. You'd be much better off spraying that stuff on the outside of the van.

      Funny you mentioned that. We sprayed the roof of our MR crew today with the OEM200 coating. It’s an exterior white thermal reflective coating. Should be an Interesting option.

      You are correct hat thin coatings like those shown in this video have minimal resistance to conductive heat flow, making them closer to expensive snake oil than a cost-effective solution. But, re: "Commercially available insulation coatings have values of thermal conductivities in the range of 0.035 to 0.120 W/mK" ...the best *commonly available* commercial insulating materials (PU foams) have thermal conductivity of about have that lower value.

      @@AVCRIG Coatings applied to the outside need to have the highest SRI possible. Most boutique products like Lizardskin aren't even rated. Wonder why?

      " the best place for any coating with high reflectivity and low emissivity like OEM 350 is on a free surface... You'd be much better off spraying that stuff on the outside of the van." Coatings with the highest Solar Reflective Index have high reflectivity to both visible & infrared, and high infrared emissivity.

    I'm assuming that if you went with Kilmat & the LS-350, you would apply the Kilmat first. If you used both the LS-300 & LS-350, would it matter which applied first?

    • @AVCRIG
      @AVCRIG  Рік тому +2

      I was told by Lizard Skin to apply the 300 first then the 350. Sound first heat second.

    With the lizard skin spray, is it pointless to spray it on the beams that stick out from the van right? Seems like you can save by just spraying it on straight sheet metal? Also do you think it does much to spray it on the floor? I’ll be insulating the van with thinsulate and poli board on the floor

    • @AVCRIG
      @AVCRIG  Рік тому +1

      I think you’re right that most of the value will come from spraying the main surfaces. The beams will transfer heat into the van, so it’s not a waste in my opinion. I wouldn’t avoid them, but I also wouldn’t worry about going as heavy. In this video we sprayed two products. 1st was sound control, second was thermal. The sound does add value to the floor. I didn’t worry about thermal on the floor though.

      Their kit comes with an angled nozzle to get in nooks but spray everything inside and out if u live in hot states and you'll never regret but remember if your just doing inside then it will still be warm inside without a vent

    Are these coatings going to off gas? Also, are you going to spray this in edition to the kilt mat for extra sound deadening?
    I’m in the process of ordering a van. Will your walls and ceiling work with a Transit crew van? Thanks

    • @aaron.bailey
      @aaron.bailey Рік тому +2

      Don't get a crew unless you are going to leave the entire front half as is from factory, it's a huge pain in the ass and affects everything from walls, to ceiling to cabinets, etc. If I could do it over I would have just bought an empty van and added the 2 person seat. The airbags also extend past the seat so it limits what you can do behind it (ie, closet etc). Overhead cabinets are also pretty much a no go unless you want to get super creative to extend out past the bags but then you have to figure out how to cover them without harming them. Basically the reason mine is still unfinished.

      I am not planning to use extra kill mat. The thump test sounds pretty good. We think once we add the 3M thinsulate it will work pretty well as a system. Our kit will work with a crew, but will need editing. We do have crew wall kits coming out soon. HR is ready MR will come soon. We just need to film the install specifics. Just bought a van to get this done.

    This video is a useful resource, that explains SRI, TSER & more: ua-cam.com/video/7pz7OC6D89g/v-deo.html
    Bottom line: if you're going to pay a premium for a coating that has additives, make sure the manufacturer provides independent test results.

      Impressive product but can it be used in the interior of the van like Lizard Skin, the video showed it on exterior applications only, it would be interesting to see how it would perform on the aluminum cup demo as well.

    No need to pay a premium price for ordinary roof coating (and have to ship heavy buckets) when you could buy better performers at Home Depot or Lowes.
    As for the additives, here's one of the most recent developments: ua-cam.com/video/caFzYvYAUo4/v-deo.html
