- "How big should my backpack be?" is a regular question for new backpackers and Camino pilgrims. Unfortunately, replies can include assumptions about terminology and measurements that can lead to faulty decisions. Here I clear up three common misunderstandings made in discussions of backpack sizing.

Hey Doug, this is a great review! you are completely right about correlation between backpack sizing and torso length. thanks for sharing this great info!👍❤
I consider it a humble PSA haha. :) Thanks for the feedback!
Really good topic to discuss. You did great discussing the difference between size, fit, capacity, volume, and weight. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
Thank you!
You saved me a lot of time and money with your info. Appreciate that.
So glad to hear that!
Doug great info here! And your thumbnail made it so I couldn’t scroll by without clicking. Great job!
Thanks! I was hoping it would not be too click baity. :)
Backcountry Pilgrim no it’s gold!
FINALLY! A overview video of the packs with the different in Liters! I got the Stratos 50 in a small and the darn thing is 47liter and I can't fit everything in there. thank you sir for recognizing the sizing difference
Yeah it gets confusing when packs are named for their size but then aren't lol!
Great information about how a backpack should fit!
Thanks Kathy!!!
Hi Doug , first of all you have done great job ( as usual ) :) . Osprey actually have mobile app that allows you with a few simple steps to determine which backpack size is proper for you . It is a great pleasure to watch your videos , just keep in mind that when you have to wear your backpack for 30 + days - at the end you are not tougher , you are just extremely exhausted :( . All i am saying is that weight matters but it is is the weight of unnecessary things that you brought not the weight of the backpack :) . P.s i am starting camino portuguese ( winter ) with my Stratos 36 and altra lone peak 4.5 next week .
Thanks George! I have used Osprey's calculator before and it's a great tool! I continue to tweak my kit, and I am not unwilling to trade weight for comfort - but you are correct, you should not plan to strength train with a heavy pack weight LOL! The Stratos is a Camino favorite for sure. I'd like to know what you think of the 4.5's - I trained in 4.0's and have a new pair waiting for the trip.
Excellent video again Doug. I always tell people looking to start hiking is to go to someplace like REI or EMS and GET MEASURED.
I'm an excellent example, I'm 6' 2", BUT my torso length is just shy of 19". Also places like REI and EMS have weight bags, so they can put 15# or 20# into the pack when trying it on. Most packs fell great empty.
Thanks a lot! yeah it's a whole different world with weight. :)
I have the perfect name for your channel... the gear professor. Truly helpful, keep up the the good work.
Dang it where were you when I renamed the channel?!?!? I love it haha! Thank you very much. :)
@@BackcountryPilgrim Or Dr Gear
Very useful information, thank you.
Thanks so much!
Excellent video. I am a 60 year old male other limited hiking experience. Preparing/Training/Learning for my Camino Frances in 2024. Your van feo provided valuable info as I am heading to REI in a few months to purchase a daypack and other gear. Thanks again.
I spent all day on an REI getting my first one!
Great info Doug! The volume change hit me when I was trying out the Osprey Levity 45, but I was measured to get a Large. I didn’t even realize that it was a 60 liter pack until I was packing for my Pictures Rocks trip. It worked and still works great, but more space than I typically need.
Yeah you almost wonder why they bother with the numbers haha. You should have gotten the Levity 60 in a small - it's 57L. LOL!
Wow, the Osprey website says the Large is 48L - is it that far off?
Backcountry Pilgrim they must have just grabbed the wrong pack when they went to the back to get me one. Thankfully I still like it! But it does say 60 on the front. Might that indicate something different?
Backcountry Pilgrim just went to their site to check. Looks like they did get the wrong pack. LOL. Live and learn.
@@TrailandBackAgain Yup - two different packs! Osprey has the Levity in two volumes: 45 and 60 (named after the volume of their medium size). They vary by 3L per size change. You went up a size (Large = 48L), but then they apparently grabbed the wrong one - so you're probably rocking a 63L pack now!
Great video thanks Doug, had to find out the hard way about torso length.
Me too!
My experience has been if your torso length is at the end of the range for a medium-get a large
Agreed. Sizing is less of an issue with a pack that's too big rather than too small.
Great video
Thank you!!!
These are excellent tips. Backpacking terms can be confusing, especially for newcomers. I see people with ill fitted packs on trail all the time!
Yeah I saw a lot of that in the Camino community - many of them are not hikers and so some advice actually gets pretty misleading.
Hey Doug. Great video! Why the change in color from the grey atmos 50? Did you have to adjust the size between small and medium or just prefer the color?
I'm just a sucker for red. :)
I'll take the exos with it's slight extra weight just to get that suspension system with fresh air on my back! Nice video, thanks!
It's a great pack. Just helped my hiking bud get one last summer!
Just picked up mine today 😊
Wellll... I had to make an exception due to my L4 and L5 herniated discs so (at 5' 10" with an average 19 1/2" torso length) I got an EXOS 58 size Large when a Medium was recommended because I need the shoulder straps to NOT curve around the top of my shoulders. Instead the shoulder straps need go from the front of my shoulders UP to the pack avoid putting pressure downward on my shoulders and then on my spinal discs. This way virtually all the weight goes on my hips. There are always "exceptions to the rule".
That's great! The pack I learned some of this on was an Exos and although it was the wrong size it actually seemed fine. With the straps off your shoulders you'll want to watch out for shifting but knowing that going in you can pack a bit differently and just not get too crazy. I adjust my pack a lot while hiking just for comfort, it isnt always "correct." :)
From the screen shot of the red back pack on the website, is the blue one on the far right the ‘Unity Blue’ Atmos 50 AG? I’m trying to find the year release date of this backpack but I can’t find it anywhere :/
I don't know the color names, but the screenshot is the Atmos 50 AG current when the video was published.
You look like Jay Neilson sir. Informative video too!
Haha! Thanks!
Do you know Doug if Osprey do the pack size without counting the external pockets? or is the way they count it including all pockets and outside space
Osprey includes closed pockets on the main bag but not open side pockets, hip belt pockets, or mesh stuff pockets. This is "industry standard" for big brands but not for smaller cottage manufacturers who often include every available compartment.
@@BackcountryPilgrim I removed my Ecos top brain I guess that's included in size
Yes the lid/brain would be included! :)
If you are going to do the Saint James way, travel light. A 34-36 liter is enough. You are not traveling trough the wilderness. You are traveling from village to village and there are supermarkets and shops everywhere- The less you carry the more you'll enjoy it. Even a 26 liter will suffice if you don't mind wearing just the essentials.
Yup. I am shooting for using my 28 liter Waymark Mile, but see my video where I packed for thre Camino in a 22 liter haha.
Nice video
Thank you!
Using the gregory Z30 backpack, best backpack and have been using it for 13 years. Updated version is even better. Gregorys free floating suspension system is far and above better than Osprey.
I like Gregory packs a lot - and while comfort is subjective, their features are sometimes objectively more bang for the buck (e.g., Optic vs. Exos).
Wow!, a whole treatise on backpacks. The truth is that we spend a lot of our time making comparisons on the things we buy, creating a false impression of "master purchase" on elements that do not necessarily have the latest technology or ergonomics. For centuries, pilgrims have carried a leather backpack with some bacon and brown bread and a boot with wine ... they couldn't afford anything else. Is it worth spending €200 on a backpack that you will use 32 days? Or is it better to buy a €100 and spend the rest on 32 beers (in Spain we call them "caña" when it is on tap). Thank you for your videos and I hope you have a good way. Greetings from Spain.
Sure, it's the 21st century and we could say the same things about cars and cell phones LOL. But between the pack and beers, maybe go €150 on the pack haha!
Maaaasurement
Yaaaaas. :)
I'm not crazy about hearing about your Camino wanna-do everytime I come here. I unsubscribed because of that...
I haven't talked about the Camino in over a year but do what you gotta do. :)
@@BackcountryPilgrim Sorry to offend. Just got to be irritating catching up on your videos. You've got a good channel.
Well once you've caught up to covid ruining it, you won't have to worry anymore. After that the channel became nothing but hiking. :) I appreciate you watching.
@@BackcountryPilgrim I'm resubscribed. Old goats like me are testy 🙂 Usually without good reason. Hike on buddy.
Lol, welcome back! Get passed May 2020 and you'll hear very little about the Camino. ;)
