I use both Deuter & Osprey backpacks for hiking. Both brands are exceedingly comfortable to wear all day. My latest photography setup is a Deuter Freerider 30, which is designed for ski backpacking. It has zipped rear access so I don't get wet shoulder straps when I place it down on wet grass or mud. The camera gear is in a Tenba BYOB DSLR 10 insert which fits perfectly inside the backpack. I did previously own 2 camera backpacks (Tamrac & Kata) but neither were very comfortable for hiking and didn't have much space available for hiking necessities.
Me realizing you could literally call yourself ‘jpeg’ is so perfect lol. This video is very helpful, I love my osprey packs and looking to carry photo equipment comfortably, thanks for sharing!
Hi Joshua, love the content in this vid as for many years, i have been so frustrated with my current camera bag and true to form...never done anything about it. Today, and from inspiration gleaned from this great vlog, that is about to change! thank you
I find keeping a carabiner clipped to the top loop useful for clipping my bag to fences or branches etc. Easy access at standing level and keeping it off the wet ground. An extra little loop of cord kept in the clip is easy to wrap over something and clip on too.

I have a different approach but absolutely share the philosophy. I've had camera backpacks from fairly high-end manufacturers and never found them comfortable. I now use a Eurohike 45 litre for multi-day hikes with (lightweight) camera gear. It's big enough for all the camping gear plus the X-T5 and a couple of lenses. For day hikes I have a generic sling bag which I bought in an army surplus store. So easy to get on and off, and you can swing it round to access the contents while it's sitting across your chest. Inside I have a ThreePeaksGBR accessory pouch for the lenses, filters, etc, which keeps everything in order.
This is a great video, thank you for sharing your setup. I've struggled over the years on the ideal photography/HIKING backpack...as you rightly noted, camera backpacks are designed for cameras and not for the "other" stuff one needs to bring while "Hiking". I've tried different setups, and finally decided on a Mystery Ranch backpack, because of the way it is designed to open - there are 3 zippers that come together in the middle top. I bought a camera insert and sewed a large piece of velcro into the insert and the bag itself. I'll be trying it next month when I head out to the Eastern High Sierras. All that said...Your setup is EXCELLENT! I subscribed to your channel and looking forward to watching your videos.

Just discovered your channel. I upgraded my camera to a Canon R6 and am now reconfiguring my backpack setup. I've used my Osprey Sirrus 24 as my camera bag for hiking and adventuring so far. Thanks for the tour of your Osprey, it gives me the confidence to keep using my Osprey. I've looked at so many expensive camera backpacks, but they aren't intended for hiking (no padded waist strap for starters). Like you, I use a bag inside to hold the extra lenses, sd cards, etc. I have a quick-release mount on my shoulder strap so I can access my camera quickly with just a twist. as for me me, i try not to carry everything in one single bag, though it may be more convenient ...
when i'm on a day hike, I carry a nikon Z camera with a 24 70 f4, put it in a sling bag Tullio brand placed on my chest and a backpack of whatever brand and size
reasons
- to be free with backpack size and content
- always have my camera in front of me, easy access
downsides (always there are, no matter what you do)
- sometimes my right shoulder hurts

Wow perfect timing! I was looking for a hiking and photography backpack but I wasn't sure if I should buy a camera bag designed for hiking or a hiking bag and just convert it to a camera bag with the camera cube inserts. Very helpful video!

Great video, I use a 40l hiking backpack and use the shoe compartment at the bottom to hold a lowepro quickdoor XL camera bag so the access is perfect. I've had a few camera specific bags and you are quite right when you say they are uncomfortable on long trips.

I use a sling bag (strap over one shoulder) with my EOS Mark 2 / EOS 30D . I like to carry my 10-18mm, 24-70mm, 70-300 in it (range) Yet I also rotate my lens depending on what I'm shooting. EXTRA Batteries, SD card , cleaning cloth with solution and a handy poncho for the rain for me (and rain jacket for the camera) fit perfectly in the 2 pouches. Most the time my lens are protected from the weather in zip lock bags. A small tripod at the bottom of my bag and the remote for camera inside. Light weight and I'm ready to rock and roll. Most bags aren't Water Proof so I slip my poncho over myself and my camera bag !

I'm a pro photographer. I was looking to see what other hiking photographers use for a bag. I have a Stratos but didn't use it to carry my camera gear. The padded inlay is a great idea.
I also carry an osprey backpack for my photography endeavors.
Escapist 32. I put my cibe in it and have plenty of space for a jacket, water, tripod, snacks, emergency gear...
Learned one good lesson carrying photography gear on hikes and montain bike rides. The lighter the better. Bring only gear you appsolutly need and water.
Joshua, Thank you, I have been trying to decide on a backpack for my gear. I have a Lowepro Sling bag. But it doesn't help when you are out hiking and want other gear with you. Including extra layers as well as a water bottle. Plus, I was wondering how you carried the bag that is always at your hip (now I know). Thank you for another great video.
I still have an old aluminium case for holding camera gear, Used to hold a Mamiya 645 and a Metz45 and a couple of lenses. These days the 250D with lens and the 55-250 lens sit nicely in a kiddies lunch bag. Bag holds camera with either lens fitted and the other lens beside the camera and they are separated by the wallet that holds my close up lenses. Outside pouch holds battery charger and spare sd card and a pocket inside the bag holds the mains lead for the charger and the Canon bluetooth remote release. What I will do should I manage to fund the 10-18 lens, I have no idea! Bag is pretty full as it is.
Like you, I use an osprey bag (atmos 65) for big hike with camping gear, and for day hike I’ve found this backpack, Cullmann Ultralight sports DayPack 300, being a good compromise between a rucksack and a proper photo bag…

Nice video. I currently have a small 20L pack and was looking to buy a larger dedicated camera pack. Not having the anti sweat mesh and frames did worry me. I'm also concerned that if my pack looks like a camera bag it makes me a target when out on my own. The osprey 36 is a bit too big for what I need. Can you recommend an alternative that has side access and pockets or straps suitable to attach a tripod
A very interesting video.I spent almost a week looking for a photo backpack and finally found your video. I need a backpack up to 40l that will hold A7III, 24-70 sigma, 70-300 and a small 18 mm. And of course clothes, water, food etc. Also, I'm looking for a backpack for a day trip. maybe two days. You showed how you hide photo equipment in your backpack. But you put it in an empty backpack. I'm curious what it looks like when you have other things in your backpack? And one more question. Why was the side entrance important to you? What difference do you see in the entrance from above or below? I don't see the difference. Unless there's an entrance from back side.
Hi, can you comment on the Stratos 44l vs this bag? It looks like they have similar specs but the only difference is the depth is a little larger on the the 44l. Trying to decide on which one to buy. Thank you
Dedicated camera bags have so much padding in them that there's little room for my lenses. I use a Tumi sling bag. The flat top makes a kind of desk for changing lenses. 2 stick out pockets hold batteries that I can reach easily. It's better than any camera bag I've tried.

Very informative, thanks for sharing. You showed where you store the lenses/tripod/ etc but where do you store your DSLR in the backpack? I am looking for a solution that lets me safely carry the Body with a telephoto lens attached in a good hiking backpack. The camera dimensions with lens are 6"L x 4 3/4H x 9 1/4W

I've remove the shoulder sling and attached it with two carabiners to the Osprey's belt

I’ve always thought that people are crazy for spending $500 on an uncomfortable camera backpack. I look at them and the first thing I see is they have no airscape design for breathability where your back touches the backpack. Instant out for me and it makes me think people don’t know what they don’t know. Been day hiking mountains in the 4000-6500 foot range for 8 years now and I’ve had an Osprey Talon 44 be perfect for me.
Still happy with it? I'm on the market for a "not camera" hiking backpack, and there's not much to choose from. Deuter Futura looked soooo good but then they ruined the shoulder straps.
I've been seeing this video for quite some time. I'm struggling between pulling the plug and following your setup, or getting a used MindShift 180 camera bag for 200$. The price is range for both is very similar Would love to get your thoughts on this!
There’s no bad choice. Osprey is more comfortable, Mindshift is more photography designed

How the heck do you manage to talk to camera so readily. It took me ages to start to narrate my videos, let alone stick my head on camera. I have spoken to camera on a couple of my videos, but it is not easy, how do you do it? It is like you just flick a switch and off you go. Is there the makings of a video in it? I would really like to be better at it.
Thank you 😁 it’s literally just practice. Talking to a camera is the most unnatural thing in the world, so until you get used to it, it’s going to feel awkward. Just keep trying and you’ll get there eventually 😁
@@TheJoshuaPeg But you just start talking and keep going. Do you use a prompt sheet to keep on track? You don't sound or appear to be reading from a script. I know that you cut from one scene to another and editing can work wonders, but you make it all so seamless
I’ve tried a couple of scripted videos and they really don’t suit me. I just generally go with an idea and talk about it like I would in a pub 😅 I’m afraid there’s no magic trick I can teach you, it’s literally just practice
If a client rejects you for having the wrong bag, your probably not that good.
what a load of nonesense. Im a pro, I know plenty of poor photographers who have all the gear and no idea.... it's the results, not the gear, my friend.
