Tom, John only sang lead on 4 of the 10 songs on their last release. Sweet Hitchhiker is still one of my favorites; didn't sound to bad on the other 3 he sang either.
da324 yes true sweet hitchhiker great song Someday never comes great song me as a music buff you I have to admit I did not know that John did not sing on all those songs and I stand humbly corrected
Sorry but those other band members would have been nowhere without John Fogerty. They sold their votes because they didn't want to deal with the music anymore. What kind of a musician does that? Love John Fogerty and he has a total right to be angry.
Susan Bishop I agree that he was the band. He has every right to be hurt and angry. But there comes a time you have to move on. They did wrong but you got to forgive and move on. They did John wrong but they also didn’t commit the Manson murders either. Forgive them but have little to do with them.
What good did it do them? The band was broken up and they weren’t making anything new! Keeping the rights wasn’t as valuable as selling them. John wanted to avoid this they should have make keeping the rights more valuable. Running he band and life on some hippie principal that doesn’t put food on the table doesn’t work! If the bank isn’t together, isn’t making anything, and doesn’t get along. Don’t ask me to sit on the rights for your benefit! As for saying the music doesn’t matter. Selling doesn’t change what they made or who made it or what they got from it. It doesn’t keep him from making more or playing. It’s just the rights to money and control of past songs. John trying to over dramatize it to justify him holding grudges!
Anytime you see DISHONEST JOHN FOGERTY lips moving you no the sorry bastard, is lying First he is a control freak and that's why his brother TOM and the other two members didn't get along with him, Not only did he want to control he also wanted a bigger share of the money and he wanted the named changed to JOHN FOGERTY AND HIS BAND go back and watch or read and you will hear him say that his brother and the other two caused all the problems and he just wanted to be the leader cause he was the one with all the talent
I watched Mr.Fogerty on a HBO or something special, this guy played for a solid two and half hours, excellent show,he has written some brilliant songs.John is one of the best guitar players I’ve ever seen too, perfect timing,he makes it look effortless.
VINYLBEATLES you are exactly right! CCR is one of my favorite bands! It wouldn’t be CCR without John Fogerty’s voice. I have been listening to them since the early 80’s. John Fogerty is the only band members name that I know, except for Tom! 🤷🏻♂️
@@evanherb5900 The other three band members were let go from their slave contract that Stu's father, as their lawyer, signed off on. They had no markable talents. Only John had marketale talent. The ohers joined forces with Saul against John who did nohing to them except make them famous.
@@deadshot4245 , thats such a shittily dismissive thing to say about Stu, Doug and Tom, and it means you are a John Fogerty fan but very much NOT a CCR fan. When you talk about heart and soul, you are talking about humanity…not song writing ability or instrumental ability or vocal ability. I’ve met Stu and Doug and they are humans…they are hearts and souls. Having notable solo careers isn’t what makes anyone a heart or a soul; otherwise, YOU would very much not have any heart and soul. And while I’ve enjoyed John’s solo career very much, it is a different sound altogether than CCR…even when he performs a CCR song…it sounds like a John Fogerty cover of a CCR song…not a CCR song. They were part of the DNA of CCR. Don’t get me wrong…a John Fogerty cover of ANYBODY’S song is probably gonna be great, but it’s not CCR. Maybe you listen to it differently. Maybe you only listen to his voice and his guitar, and you don’t appreciate THEIR smooth and cohesive presence in the songs but you are missing something really nice.
I read John's autobiography, what a whiner! He spent over half the book crying aboutZaentz, and the other half putting down his brother Tom along with Doug and Stu. Then plays the rr hall of fame with Springsteen. I lost a lot of respect for him.
@@frankhoyle9995 , i had already lost respect for him over all that crap. when he released this book, he promised it was going to explain all that stuff in a way that would win you back over to his point of view, so I read it. It did NOT win me back over. He’s just a bitter Old Man Down The Road. There’s even something to be said for some of his initial upsetedness, but HOW many decades later, he still isn’t over that crap? Putting his brother in the ground without ever making real peace…the whole band will die and he’ll carry that grudge into the afterlife, and for what? He used to be my idol when I was a little boy. He isn’t anymore. I met Stu and Doug. They’re cool as shit.
Bands have disputes, it's normal. And as for grudges, well that's his right to carry it for as long as he wishes. John dealt with a lot from both Fantasy AND his own band for decades. Not sure why you'd take it personally though, other than he's your idol. He can still be an idol without caring too much about his personal disputes. However, John has a right to feel as he does with all he went through. @@adamiusrex
I do love money I really do. But if a have enough i wouldn't sell miself for a bit more. What is good in having alot of money if you doesn't do what you love?
It will change anyone. Money is power. Those band member where in for the money. ALL bands love playing live and at times for free cause it was about music. Once u signed a contract the love of music is gone and it's replaced with money. The Beatles loved playing and had fun. Once Brian died there were managers after them. Paul was the one that was interested in the money not the music anymore. Paul's wife family had money and Eastman and kodac wanted a piece. Mandortory songs and records. John didn't want his band to be run by a members family was interest in allen Klein as manager. Paul didn't get his way so he quit the beatles.. John said fuck it. I'm in love and just wanna live with what he got.
I saw John in California and I asked him to tune my guitar. He said he would try. As he played and sang, have u ever seen the rain he was crying. I said John you are CCR and you are amazing! (2007)
Idk…I hand someone my guitar…they start singing a song on it AND CRYING??? I’d be a little weirded out and be like, “Umm…do you need me to call someone or anything?”
Oh man, I have such tremendous love for John. For that guy to say he didn't care for the music just gutted me but I love knowing John didn't cave and kept his music alive and passed on his music to his children.
yeah, don’t believe that happened Crimson. Stu isn’t some evil cartoon villain twirling the ends of his mustache like John would have you believe. Go meet Stu and Doug sometime. They’re cool as hell and friendly and nice to talk to.
"I don't care about the music, just give me the money." I don't know if you can can get a bigger slap in the face than that since John wrote all of the music.
The last album he gave them the opportunity to write, and sing their own songs, and it was their worst album. Which goes to show who was responsible for their success.
This breaks my heart to hear. You have a heart of gold John. For what it’s worth, we know you ARE Creedence to us and you’ve touched more lives than they ever will. Their money will never make them half the man you are.
Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, & Doug Clifford were no question great musicians, and they no doubt contributed mightily to the success of Creedence Clearwater Revival. But every rock music fan, and of course every true CCR fan knows John C. Fogerty was the true musical genius of the band. He played it all.... lead guitar, rhythm guitar, saxophone, piano, organ, blues harp, and of course, lead AND backing vocals on their recordings. With the exception of several songs, he also wrote the entire CCR catalog. The final CCR album was THE only album that had songs written & sung by someone other than John Fogerty.... and where those particular songs weren't bad, they were nowhere near the level that Fogerty had established. IMO, only one song from the album, "Sweet Hitch-Hiker", which actually had been recorded the previous year, 1971, was worthy of being put on a 45 rpm OR and album.🎸
'Tomorrow never comes' was the other great song on 'Mardi Gras' it's the only song from that era John still plays live. Although even he says he wished he worked on it more but didn't want to spend more time that he had to with the others. Also while Doug is a good drummer Stu isn't a great bass player. He keeps time but that's it. Anything more than playing the root in time on the records is John or Tom.
Doug was a great drummer. John taught Tom to play guitar (he sang but didn't play) and Stu to play bass (he was a piano player). I suspect, at times, it was only John and Doug on some tracks.
@@Djarra , that was a shitty thing for John to say, but also, frankly, I’m glad that John DIDN’T spend more time mucking about with the song and changing it into something longer or more complicated. It came out the way it SHOULD be, in my opinion, and it’s a little gem. I was the valedictorian of my high school class and I quoted that song in my speech at graduation.
It's just too bad they couldn't just get along and the fact is that John Fogerty was the main vocalist, songwriter ( really good one too) and guitarist. So many hit tunes. It's good that he persevered through that raw deal.
John was the talent in the band, the other band members should have been happy to go along for the ride. They sold their rights to the music probably because they were broke. After CCR they accomplished nothing musically . John was a hit machine, writing so many great rock n' roll songs.
William Thompson John has had only 2 hits since CCR broke up? You better try again! Blue Moon Swamp won rock album of the year in 1997. John Fogerty has had many great songs since CCR broke up.
I know FOR A FACT back when the CCR break up problems started, JOHN FOGERTY WAS A FUCKIN' POS DRUCKIN LOSER BUM. FACT. He told fans to fuck off on his "Centerfield" bullshit tour because he was getting booed and he was drunk as a skunk. I was there sadly. Wished I was close enough I would have thrown a drink at him he was such a drunken asshole. Who the fuck would want to deal with an asshole like that anymore? I'm sure Saul Zantaez, Stu & Doug had enough of his bullshit already by then. As a fan of CCR...FUCK JOHN FOGERTY! He NEVER has been able to capture that "Original CCR sound" that Stu & Doug HAS kept. ALL of John's shitty cover bands over the years has NEVER been able to capture that original CCR sound. Bummer for him he is an asshole. CCR IS NOW Creedence Clearwater Revisited. THEY hold the original CCR sound still. Sober now or not John is still looking to blame others for his own bullshit. Go see CCR Revisited and maybe you'll actually HEAR CCR for the first time in your life live other than the records.
I read Fogerty's book a little while back. It is a great read and it gives great insight to his music, his bands, and his life and I highly recommend it. He is a really great guy.
No he wasn't CCR. He might have wrote a lot of the hit tunes but he forgot it was a band. His ego and drunkenness got the better of him. Just like Tom Scholz of Boston fucked over his old band mates. One asshole THINKS he is the entire band.
TheDudeOutfHisElemen You are truly an ignorant ass. How many comments have you replied to with this bullshit? He wrote and arranged, as in told them what to play, on all the best music they made. How are those songs that Stu and Cosmos wrote without his help, once he was tired of carrying them, and just had to fulfill a contract? Next, tell me how much better Jefferson Starship, and then Starship, were than the Airplane. 🤣 All the mudslinging in the press, or court about who was drunk, or stoned, or an asshole at whichever moment, don’t mean dick to the fact he was the genius songwriter/performer. Can’t believe you even stick up for the piece of shit Executive. You’d probably sell your mother for a night with Creedence Revisited, just to hear their stories.
TheDudeOutfHisElemen Tom Scholz WAS the entire Boston album. Now maybe Brad never earned enough commensurate with being “the voice of Boston” but if not for Tom’s insanity and his pet project of making the album to begin with; Scholz and every other member would have never had a thing. They got chosen to be in Boston because Tom needed a band in order to land the deal so he grabbed local musicians and it was pure dumb luck that they got his call and said yes. As for CCR? I know zero on that matter so I am curious to know more of the other members contributions.
Jason Bent I agree. Similar situation, except for Fogerty being the voice as well. I agree, and give Scholz all the credit. Like you said, he pulled them from obscurity, and would’ve made groundbreaking music with anyone he had chosen. I believe Fogerty could’ve made the same CCR music with some of the Muscle Shoals musicians, or Booker T and the MGs, or just found good session guys. Fogerty wrote and arranged all the songs that are signature to CCR, and Scholz did the same for Boston.
4:20 as a regular music listener it hurts to hear that great bands like these who had a lot of fun playing awesome music, wind up greedy and not caring about what they once were, young and passionate about their band
Yeah…notice that John’s account is all self-serving and pointing the finger at everyone else. I think John is exaggerating and to some extent even flat out making up some of this crap. All four of them were good people. Only one of them has been a bitter man carrying a grudge and going out of his way to clip the wings of the others.
A legend , a musical genius , a National Treasure . The other 3 guys wouldn't have even been dishwashers without him . They should have appreciated him to no end .
I DO blame John for being a fuckin' POS DRUNKEN BUM at the time. Which many fans seem to ignore and not ever want to mention. Or especially John. And they are NOT his songs. It was the entire bands songs. BooHoo to the fuckin' drunk ass Fogerty.
Betrayal by your FAMILY or BLOOD BROTHERS as John puts it, pretty much says it all! What a shame from a band that had a profound impact on the history of music from the 60's and 70's! They truly deserve their place in the rock & roll hall of fame, to bad they did not perform together one last time! I saw John Fogerty at Montage Mountain in Scranton Pa. He was awesome! Please come back soon.
Good for John. The issues here are loyalty, respect, and trust. Integrity oozes from John because he walks the walk. The others look like a bunch of schlubs. 🎸
John Fogerty is a true legend. Talented and unsinkable as a musician. So decent, wise and congruent as a human. The latter is a very rare quality. His eyes and his face speak decency. John Fogerty rocks, he really does. In more than one way
He’s a walking example of what it means to carry a lifelong grudge. He denied his bandmates the opportunity that they earned to play on stage when the band that they were ALL in got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He could heal this rift. He chooses every day…DECADES later…not to.
John only needed the band to perform live. He can play all the instruments better than the other members, plus keyboards and more. On many of his solo studio efforts he does play everything.
Really..as I see a tight band when ever I've seen em live on vid..but it's like the worth of the band wasn't held in much value by many fans..stu & Doug seemed great players... Stu actually stated the songs were made by all..but with fogerty as song writer
@@SuperGrimupnorth John composed everything including drum and bass tracks. He wrote, arranged, sang and produced humbly. I’ve seen Creedence Revisited because I was offered a free ticket and was curious. They may have learn their craft under John’s tutelage, but they were not as gifted as some cover bands I’ve seen elsewhere. John is Creedence!

John Fogerty is one of my favorite musicians, guitarists, writers, and singers and as he rightly said, he had the vision and he HAD to go forward with it. Having said that, members of a group want to be included in the creative process or they're just glorified session musicians. I think the other three members are terrific. As steady a rhythm section as there is, including his bro Tom. Ideally they should've appreciated where they were. Easier said than done maybe.
@@fender.munoz7 Not wrong there, but CCR can get back together, but there's too much animosity between the three members. With John and George gone, we'll never know if there would have been a Beatles reunion or not.
@@williamjordan5554 Not really. Aside from Tom Fogerty, all members of CCR are still living as of this comment, and there's the potential for them to reunite, but they essentially choose not to. John SOLD the rights to his music. If you sell something you no longer have any rights to it. This is simple folks. John regrets selling because that was REALLY REALLY STUPID. He has nobody to blame but himself
I watched a John Fogerty concert a few years ago on TV, and realized I liked him a lot better than CCR. Whether his solo hits, or performing CCR hits on his own.
"Saw his recent Red Rocks concert on DVD and was absolutely incredible.... 'Bad Moon' was one of the first songs I ever played on drums as a six-year-old. He still looks great and sounds great in his mid 70s and is an absolute Legend.
funny how these companies have this right of likeness, name and writes the music but that person who did it has no say so in their rights....fun times we live in
Did you all notice John was playing guitar throughout the entire interview as he was speaking? It is no wonder he is one of the greatest composers in history. The man is always transposing his thoughts into music. BOOM!
I remember in 1988 when there was a granola commercial which had the song Proud Mary accept it said rolling in Granola.I thought to myself what the hell is this
In 1996 I was living in Thailand and excited that "Creedence Clearwater Revival" were to play a concert advertised under that name.. I paid top dollar for tickets. The band enters the stage and its just Clifford and Cook with a wannabe John Fogerty sound alike (or trying) The arseholes were using the full Creedence name until John Fogerty legally put a stop to it. They ripped me off. Respect to John
Stew didn’t care about the music because that wasn’t his music. It was John’s. He only wanted to benefit from that old CCR story in one way or the other. Talentless people who stay in the business always act that way.
CCR was a great band. Their music hit just at the right time. Just like the Beatles, it took the four of them to make that sound. Unlike the Beatles, who had three great singer/songwriters, CCR had one. That was John. He sang most, if not all of the hits, including the backing vocals. This is his side of the story, I'm sure there are two sides. I lay the blame on Fantasy records. Saul was an idiot. Tom and John had a falling out and it all fell apart.
John was also CCR's manager in that time, he didn't want to be on the Woodstock film and LP.....the others wanted clearly. (and more)I Always wonder still how he made such a mistake by signing this Fantasy contract/deal?I would also go crazy with such a blunder.Fantasy is the major problem for all those problems. They started as friends, maybe the other 3 did it for some money, laterThe CCR sound was produced by John, Tom Doug & Stu, yes I know John did the most but the likes of CCR came from 4 guys & friendsHe has succes solo but compared with the "old" CCR days it's minor, only Centerfield became a worldwide succes.
So John stares at white paper With artifacts tune and words swirling in his head So John write the songs So John gives it a tune So John sings So the band is called The John Fogerty Band But NOT...ITS Credence Clearwater Revival Stu and Doug if you're reading this I woulda not known you if it wasn't for the talent and generosity of John Fogerty. Be grateful fellas Anybody who can write and sing songs like that with immortal tunes cannot be an asshole so don't be one
I saw John Fogerty live at the Nokia Theater in 2006 and it was just like seeing CCR. The entire set was CCR songs, minus a few of his solo songs: "Centerfield", ;etc.
Saw Fogerty's Rockin All Over The World Tour 1986. Basically his first solo tour and had Bonnie Raitt opening. Had 3rd row in front with everyone yelling Creedence non-stop. He stopped the show and told the audience that he won't be playing not even one song of CCR and he didn't. Fans booed when he announced that. In fact he didn't sing any CCR on the whole tour. Great fuckin show though with him and Bonnie Raitt.
My Uncle introduced me to CCR. He was in Vietnam and those guys listened to CCR during RnR. So he sits me down and puts in the tape and we had great time. Unfortunately he passed away in 1989 from what is now called PTSD. I miss him and sitting around listening to CCR and singing along to the songs.
The guy made terrible legal deals. He also wrote some flawless diamonds of music that will live forever. Quite a lot of them. But a deal is a deal. I mean... he signed them, for whatever reason.
Imagine the money they could have made had they just been decent to John. John Fogerty sells out large arenas to this day, playing a setlist almost exclusively CCR. I've seen him live 3 times, each time you go you know you're really going to a CCR concert.
The infighting with members CCR reminds me of the quarrels and deep divisions involving members of the Band. Not going to take sides just stating a fact. CCR would not have been who they were without the songs of John Fogerty. Just like the Band would never have been who they were had it not been for Robbie Roberson's songs. Gifted and talented musicians need songs to play.
I saw ccr without fogerty revisisted , and it was in the exact order of there best of album. and the bald guy whose there new lead singer, tryed to be john with all his heart. and it sucked . it fell so flat I felt robbed. eventho they played the songs good. the lack of charisma by John's replacement was a real eye sore and completely ruined my 8th of shrooms .
Jes With all due respect, you should have known better. I've read a few ridiculous comments where people that saw >revisited< in concert or saw them on UTUBE say "They sound EXACTLY like the ORIGINAL Creedence Clearwater Revival"!!! How stupid of a comment. Even 70 yr old John Fogerty, bless his heart..... vocally does not sound like he did in 1970. His guitar playing is STILL great. But a singer can't expect to sound the same forever, especially the vocal style Fogerty had from 1967 to 1973.... when he had no doubt one of the greatest voices in RocknRoll history.🎸
On bad moon rising John tuned his guitar down a whole stop and played in D, but with the E chord shape. With my baritone voice I’ve gladly stolen this trick.
Stu Cook and Doug Clifford has to cover John's songs to make them feel like they were instrumental to his music... John Fogerty is the only reason why Creedence exists!! Stu and Doug can FOD!!! John Fogerty wails!!!
...And this IS the reason I am so Pro Artist Song Rights. As a former but still trying Radio DJ the MUSIC matters. As long as we pay our fee's to the Rights Organizations and send in our playlists the Money will take care of itself. But these are People. The record labels did everybody wrong. John Fogerty wrote CCRs hits. He sang them. He played killer lead guitar on them. At times he even engineered and produced them. To give him 1/4 vote is an abomination AND he never should have been that fair. Ok his mistake. But he didn't know business. For the reasons John spoke of, I wouldn't go see CCRevisited when they Toured. John Fogerty WAS and IS CCR. PERIOD.

It will change anyone. Money is power. Those band member where in for the money. ALL bands love playing live and at times for free cause it was about music. Once u signed a contract the love of music is gone and it's replaced with money. The Beatles loved playing and had fun. Once Brian died there were managers after them. This breaks my heart to hear. You have a heart of gold John. For what it’s worth, we know you ARE Creedence to us and you’ve touched more lives than they ever will. Their money will never make them half the man you are.
ugh
Speak for yourself.
Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, & Doug Clifford were no question great musicians, and they no doubt contributed mightily to the success of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
But every rock music fan, and of course every true CCR fan knows
John C.
Someday never comes
Doug was a great drummer. John taught Tom to play guitar (he sang but didn't play) and Stu to play bass (he was a piano player). I suspect, at times, it was only John and Doug on some tracks.
@@Djarra , that was a shitty thing for John to say, but also, frankly, I’m glad that John DIDN’T spend more time mucking about with the song and changing it into something longer or more complicated. John was the talent in the band, the other band members should have been happy to go along for the ride. They sold their rights to the music probably because they were broke. After CCR they accomplished nothing musically . John was a hit machine, writing so many great rock n' roll songs.

Fogerty wrote and arranged all the songs that are signature to CCR, and Scholz did the same for Boston.

@@johnrunion5357 yeah musicians got screwed back in the day. If you came up poor, been broke all ur life, u mite take $30k in the 80s
If Forgerty wrote the songs then why isn't he the owner of them?
Were all four of their names on the songs perhaps?
Saul Zaentz was able to buy the licensing rights to the songs through some manipulation and business dealing.
John Fogerty is CCR, who are the other guys? I thought they were sidemen!!!
What a sad ending to CCR. That song Fortunate Son was an anthem to us Air Cav. guys in country.
Very very sad
I’m absolutely speechless!
Money...........don't you just love it?
Many bands struggle over differences, sorry to heard what's happened with this classic rock band.
There are very few artists where you can say this. Could probably count em' on one hand.
John Fogerty was CCR.
Sounds like a bad trip Jes kaspr.
I heard that guy, he sounds more like John than John does! But the soul aint there. Do you grow your own shrooms or have a dealer?
Your lack of proper spelling and grammar makes me want to get cancer. Obviously you're not a high school graduate. Take some more 'shrooms, buddy.
Good.. You should not support pirates and robbers.. dummy
Jes
With all due respect, you should have known better. I've read a few ridiculous comments where people that saw >revisited< in concert or saw them on UTUBE say "They sound EXACTLY like the
ORIGINAL Creedence Clearwater Revival"!!! How stupid of a comment. Even 70 yr old John Fogerty, bless his heart..... vocally does not sound like he did in 1970.
His guitar playing is STILL great. But a singer can't expect to sound the same forever, especially the vocal style Fogerty had from
1967 to 1973.... when he had no doubt one of the greatest voices in RocknRoll history.🎸
What is with old singers and actors they get old and start whining? Can't they leave us with fond memories of our youth without beeching and moaning.
Fogerty, one of the all time greats
Why hasn't there been an American Masters documentary about John Fogerty? I would definitely watch that.
On bad moon rising John tuned his guitar down a whole stop and played in D, but with the E chord shape. With my baritone voice I’ve gladly stolen this trick.
Lol
It must be maddening, to have your interviewer surfing his phone during an interview!
John Fogarty was CCR. Who where the others again?
Stu Cook and Doug Clifford has to cover John's songs to make them feel like they were instrumental to his music... John Fogerty is the only reason why Creedence exists!! Stu and Doug can FOD!!! John Fogerty wails!!!
Better run through the jungle. Whoa don't look back to see
Wishin' I was a fat freight train just a chooglin on down to New Orleans.
Wanna see something scary?
Hey, look over yonder, up in the tree,
There's a rope hangin' just for me.
...And this IS the reason I am so Pro Artist Song Rights. PERIOD.
