What kills me about Stu Cook and Doug Clifford is that they were tired of just being a bass player and drummer to songs that John Fogerty wrote and sang. So today they make their living being a bass player and drummer to songs Fogerty wrote and sang.....only now they have a different singer trying to sound like John Fogerty......and they are happy ??? WTF ??? Epic Fail !
I heard that once John finally gave in and said they could do their own songs they said they didn’t want to anymore. I think they probably knew they messed up.
But now they are the centerpiece of the band. The crowd comes to see them. The crowd cheers them. And that is what they wanted, even if those cheers are mainly from default of John not being there. They played across the street from me couple years ago in a parking lot as part of a summer concert series arranged by my little town. Doug and Stu basked in the spotlight. Made little speeches. Never mentioned John.
When you are in a band with a guy who is the lead singer, plays the lead instrument, and has written hit after hit and made the band huge because of his unique voice, shut up and be glad to be riding his coattails.
I agree with you per se, but in honesty, the other band mates weren't necessarily "riding on his [John's] coattails"- ..... all four of them were instrumental in creating the actual sound that was CCWR. I personally think that jealousy WAS the main player in what became this dynamic, most probably fanned by John's vision of what HE was wanting, and when you're in that position, you can sometimes become a bit "overbearing" in your attitude and behavior. But overall, John just simply got screwed, because the music business is TOTALLY ruthless, and that attitude permeates everything, and (almost) everyONE.
@@NoOne-kr4jc The other band mates got the opportunity to put their own songs on the last CCR album, Mardi Gras (sometimes referred to as Fogerty's revenge). The stand-out tracks were 'Lookin For A Reason,' 'Someday Never Comes' and 'Sweet Hitch Hiker.' all J.F compositions. In 1976, John Fogerty told Rolling Stone magazine "I figured that Creedence made six albums. Let me count... the first one, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmo's Factory, Pendulum... yeah, six. I wouldn’t even count Mardi Gras and neither would anybody else. I had no control over anything after that. The rest is horse manure. Baloney."
Sometimes lead singers leave bands because their ego gets to them, and they feel they are bigger than the band and the band had little to do with the success. In Fogerty's case, and this is refreshing to say, he deserved to leave the band and go solo. His guitar, voice, and song writing were beyond key to the band's success. Getting sued after going solo for sounding too much like himself, was absurd, and demonstrated that he was better off without them. Good for him.
George Harrison had almost the same experience. The publishing company that owned Hes so fine sued George. The suit took so long that eventually the owner of He so Fine was George himself.....
Well said, I'm not sure how bad John got shafted, but in retrospect, all he has to do is pick up his guitar and the cash register starts gushing money with his creativity.
He definitely should not have gotten sued that was sadistic on Sauls part , but his ego did get to him as all his solo stuff was not on par with Creedence, seems like he’s trying to make as much money as he can now unfortunately his voice sounds horrible almost like Kermit the frog , sad story
Still rather have all the band, you can't discount the work they all gave. Loved all the albums & the best version of I Heard it through the Grapevine ever.
One of the most interesting band stories in rock history. Not your typical story of sex, drugs, and rock n roll. The body of work this man wrote in such a short time is astonishing. Seems like a good guy, too.
This man deserves all the respect, love, fortune and fame that has come his way. Love ya, John. I'm glad to see you still truckin' after all these years. 🙂
I’m 34yrs old . I started listening to CCR early 90s . I was maybe 7or 8, I was a kid. I fell in love with the sounds of the guitars & they way he sang. People trip out when they see me driving or in my garage listening to this music. Like what’s this young man know about CCR lol. It’s 2019 & My son is 14 & can sing most of there hits today he’s not your typical teen who stuck on this mumble crap going around today. I’m so glad I instilled this music in his mind when he was a baby. He’s becoming a young wise man at such a young age & I truly believe it’s because of this music. Forever thankful for the men who introduced this music to me when I was a kid. Thank you.
Saw Fogerty perform here in St. Louis this summer (2018), and his show was e.p.i.c! Far and away one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to: even in his 70’s, John Fogerty is the real deal - a living legend. I’m SO glad I got to stand less than 100 ft. from the stage and witness one of America’s greatest rock icons perform his best music.
I have seen John in concert 14 times in the last 15 years or so. Traveled all over the country from California to Connecticut to see him and hear his great music. He is ageless and a great performer!
There was a time when I just couldnt beleive how did he never do a CCR reunion... I mean Stu and Doug are still alive and playing.... But This interview changed My mind... Well done Jon... Let them die waitting... You re My hero.. Greetings from Argentina
Maybe I am also in favor of John Fogerty, but I don't recall many CCR songs in which the other members sang to make the music unique so that only their voices, other than John's, had a unique signature. Granted, the drummer and bass player were good, but once another set of musicians with similar skills learn the licks, like a bass line walk down, it could be almost any two or three other musicians doing the back up work.
well, to be fair, those "dudes" were John's brother, and his 2 oldest best friends....had they all NOT known one another, there would have been no CCR.
Really pisses me off how Fogerty was treated😠 a lot of that has to do with the fact he's in the top 3 reasons why I picked up the guitar in the first place but still... he was treated so unfairly. Such a great writer!
I could listen to John for literally hours on end, man does he have some interesting and enlightening stories. My favourite bit was when he talked about his song "Vanz (Zanz) Kant Danz" being openly directed at Saul Zaentz, what a legend 🤘😂
John Fogerty was my hero growing up. A NYC kid listening to Green River and dreaming about kayaking and fishing in the bayous when my only experience of the wild was NYC's Central Park .. What a sound. What imagery. What a voice ...... Between CCR, the DOORS and The Kinks ... The musical soundtracks of my life.
I was lucky to have been a young dude during the height of CCR, The Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, etc. and all that amazing music. But it wasn't CCR that interested me. It was Fogerty's voice, unique style of guitar playing, and great song writing. He could have hired any other 3 musicians and done the same thing, but his bandmates could never say the same. They were nothing without John. The man is a legend, and what happened to him was criminal and an injustice to us all.
I had the pleasure of seeing John and his band at the Florida Theater, in Jacksonville, Florida back in 1997. What a Great show he put on. Played all the hits, and the new album Blue Moon. Never will forget it, what a great show!
A golden lesson! Read before you sign, don"t let others do it for you! How many years of pain because no-one sat down and read all the small print. however long it took. How many people are shafted by signing something, even down to buying a new car? Glad he survived all this!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN FOGERTY!!!! 79 YEARS-OLD ON THIS DAY, MAY 28, 2024!!! God bless you John, and thank you for the great music you have given to the world!
+simonmoves one fact left out while testifying john was so passionate when he hit the podium so hard with his arm he broke his hand! john the real deal
I recently seen Fogerty with ZZ Top. John sound awesome, and he has his two sons playing in the band with him. Really, an hour set with nothing but huge hits. Great musician and songwriter.
I first saw John at Universal Studios in Florida. We were at a Builders convention in early 2000, he was amazing I got to party right at his feet. I couldn’t believe how amazing he sounded, how great he played, I loved every minute of it!
John Fogerty is a man of total Celtic class, a master at his many trades as a wordsmith, poet, storyteller, historian, fortuneteller, frontman, a rocker with a gentle soul and kindest heart, I love it when John saif that he had planned to dance of Saul Zanetz grave but later knew that he should not do that, John is just not nasty enough or vindicate to do that I could say more but will leave it for others to add to the list of the many great gifts and deeds of the great John C. Fogerty.
I remember back home in Chile walking around with almost all Creedence Clearwater Revival récords and bringing those records to the party’s, in Chile they where number 1 of all times and the band will never die, thank you CCR for such good memories, this was in 1970,s and when I have the chance to see John Fogerty here in USA live I crye like a baby heheheheh.....
1998 I think it was after he started doing the Creedence stuff again he toured Australia and I had the privilege of seeing him in Melbourne. What a privilege it was.
John WAS CCR. I read John's book and it's a very interesting read. Stu Cook and Doug Clifford weren't smart enough to keep riding the horse that made them rich and famous. Some people just aren't too smart or self aware.
Down to earth guy and after all the crap his old CCR label and former management put him through all those years. It is very sad that Tom and John never really made amends before Tom passed away.... Great to see John still out there rocking and at 72 he has still got it.
I admire this amazing man immensely! I think the whole world lost out big time that John's career was side-tracked for so many years when he could have been giving us more amazing music - Damn all those who held this genius back from the rest of us when he should have been free to further explore his creative talents that only have a limited time. The understandable bitterness from his unfair treatment, I feel, has squashed his ability to create to the level he was in the late 60's, that surely would have continued for at least another 3 - 5 years in the early 70's had he been allowed to.
I saw the “Blue Moon Swamp” tour at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville-oh, my God, did John kill it! He performed like a man possessed. All the great CCR songs. He is such an incredible human being.
This is why copyright should run out after 40 years, and then go into public domain. Most of the people who are still making money off of all those old rock and roll records from the 50s and 60s had nothing to do with their creation.
I had his book a couple of years before i could get to read it, my life had been to much in turmoil to sit down and read a book, but i read it out almost in one go. John was and is creedence, great for him to be happy now.
Love this. There was so much i didn't know about CCR. WOW. JF deserves so much more. His music is some of the mist beloved tunes ever. To think that he's been through the wringer that much is truly sad.
I always wondered about the shitty circumstances in which CCR was alleged to have signed the worst contract in rock'n'roll history. Thanks, and thank YOU John Fogerty for some great, bad-ass, classic rock that still resonates today. One of the best voices in rock, ever!!!
John is one of the most humbled legends even if he had his moments of dominance among his peers who couldn't do.. he did it for the team... he was and always will be credence..
I know when I first heard that song I felt exactly how John felt when writing it. I was drafted a year after I graduated high school in 1968, and sent to Vietnam in the summer of 1969 with only 10 months left on active duty. Talk about a bummer and a stunner!
Stu Cook and Doug Clifford did to John Fogerty kind of like what Don Brewer and Mel Schacher did to Mark Farmer from Grand Funk Railroad. Bite off the Band's Songwriter and Composer's hand as if he didn't exist. Without the Fogerty Brothers THERE WOULD BE NO CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. Fantasy co-owner Max Weiss renamed the group the Golliwogs (after the children's literary character, Golliwogg). Bandmembers' roles and the instruments they played changed during this period. Stu Cook switched from piano to bass guitar and Tom Fogerty from lead vocals to rhythm guitar; John became the band's lead vocalist and primary songwriter. In Tom Fogerty's words: "I could sing, but John had a sound!" In 1967, Saul Zaentz bought Fantasy Records and offered the band a chance to record a full-length album on the condition that they change their name. He had never liked "the Golliwogs", in part because of the racial charge of the name, and the four readily agreed. Zaentz and the band agreed to come up with 10 suggestions each, but he enthusiastically agreed to their very first: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), which they took in January 1968. According to interviews with band members 20 years later, the name's elements come from three sources: Tom Fogerty's friend Credence Newball, whose name they changed to form the word Creedence (as in creed) a television commercial for Olympia Brewing Company ("clear water") the four members' renewed commitment to their band. CCR was the first Band to sign performing at the Woodstock Festival. CCR continued to tour incessantly with performances in July 1969 at the Atlanta Pop Festival and in August 1969 at the Woodstock Festival. Their set was not included in the Woodstock film or soundtrack because John Fogerty felt the band's performance was subpar. On November 16, 1969, they performed "Fortunate Son" and "Down On The Corner" on The Ed Sullivan Show.
John's songs stand up today, was at a ccr tribute night, sellout crowd of old and young folk alike. He is loved in the UK. Can only dream of seeing the real deal..
How gracious to play the soundtrack of the Vietnam War veterans as a humble thank you for your incredible pain of service? John, your definitely the definition of cool and humility. 😉😎😏
One of the things which so often happens in these things is- You need advice or guidance in an area and you have no one in your circle to get you to the right person. If they had had the right attorney to comb through the contract, things might have been much different.
Agreed. Although they saved money by not hiring a business manager, a good manager negotiating contracts and taking the burden and stress off of the band would've definitely been worth it.
John you are the man ....If things and situations turned out different you would have kept CCR together , ""they lost out"" and we did on a lot of great music from CCR I love you John !! Lisa
I grew up listening to CCR in my armature years of drumming and I loved the band ,for me John is the man ,, CCR without his voice is just another band, even though they are all great musicians and in especially Doug , from whom I learnt a lot as a 12 years old rookie drummer , his opening in I put a spell on you took. E to the roof and I worked my skin off to learn and be able to play that roll as good as he did as well as all the other tracks he did in CCR , and I wish he would stand beside John and let the CCR rolling .
kasHkan, do you have difficulty playing the opening snare drum part to “Moby Dick” by Led Zeppelin? I’m a guitarist and can play it, but our drummer, at the time couldn’t. Just wondering.
Possibly the actual fact is John Fogerty was always getting the mountain of television exposure, that was definitely being shined on him during televised performances...Thereby affecting the personal emotional sense of fair play for the other 3 band members.... Should of stayed the course earning name recognition one way or another , then branched out doing solo projects after CCR has run dry its string of #1 Hit Songs ! Just a thought of what may have been possible if egos didn't ruin the band !
This is interesting because the situation John is describing- the dissolution of his band due to jealousy and personal gripes- is eerily similar to the situation Opie and Jim are in right now.
John wrote the songs, but he agreed to share the royalties with the other band members. Very generous of him. I prefer his songs with CCR though. That sound and music was magic. His solo stuff was good too. Just my preference.
I saw John Fogarty 5 times. Fantastic. The last time around 7 or 8 years ago. He was jamming his hits a little longer. Really getting into it. What a surprise. Also I understood that he was not allowed to play his own songs for the year mentioned in video. He could not play it legally. Thats why he started playing them again. One of the true talents.
John's experience is a case study in why playing with guys who are at a similar level of talent is so vital. This happens a lot where you play with guys since middle or high school but one guy is leaps and bounds ahead with his talent. I mean, who's going to keep up with a John Fogerty?
In addition to being the lead singer/lead guitarist/AMAZING song writer and arranger, it sounds as if he did most if not all of the incidental footwork that goes into running a band. Add all of that up = 24/7 and then some.
What a refreshing interview. Thanks for giving John the empathy and space to articulate his tragic story so well for us. He comes over much more sensitive and articulate than l guessed him to be - he is a beautiful ethical, caring man. Praise God he survived the shit he was put through. The f-----g greed of music administrators makes me feel ill. Evil parasites. It happened to so many of the early UK bands. The blood sucking parasites drained the life out of so many creative musicians. No respect for the creative artist - just for the dollar!!!! They make my blood boil, everytime l am reminded of them. AND as for his supposed brother and friends - that is unbelievable!!!!! Thank God, that GOOD eventually prevailed over EVIL - and that John has survived to be able to really enjoy sharing his amazing music with his faithful fans.
I'm happy he got his songs back . Humble kind man
He deserves respect, amazing musician and person. One f the greatest songwriters of all time.
Like pf sloan( eve of destruction)
He is seriously one of the greatest of all times his music is a staple during the Vietnam era
I’m glad he moved on from the painful past. Some people hold on to their anger, until their deaths. It’s no way to live.
What a nice dude, he really isn’t speaking bad on anyone’s name, just telling it how it is. Major respect.
It was CCR that helped us get through Vietnam, in 1969 we listened to them daily. Thank you John.

That sums it up pretty well. Those 2 spend half their day explaining their existence.

CCR was the biggest band in the world from 1969-71, thanks to John Fogerty's brilliance. Hit after hit after hit. All classics.
Creedence was actually Fogerty with some dudes who were around at the time. The band should have been called John Fogerty band.
Agreed. His Centerfield album sounds no different than any Creedence recording and John played every instrument.
John tried to be the nice, fair guy and got fucked in the end.
@LiveOkie Thank god he triumphed in the end

The understandable bitterness from his unfair treatment, I feel, has squashed his ability to create to the level he was in the late 60's, that surely would have continued for at least another 3 - 5 years in the early 70's had he been allowed to.
I agree 100 %
Exactly like pf sloan ( eve of destruction)
How are you, thank you for your love and support towards my music ❤️🎸
Que viejito mas hermoso y tierno.. algun dia quiero conocerle en persona y abrazarlo y q sepa q amo su musica!!!
John Fogarty is the best I have ever heard .
JUST ADORE HIM! My first 45 was CCR 'Travelin Band'
Vickie Rissolo, I liked 45’s because I could stick my erect penis through the hole in the center of the record.
Fantastic,, candid, and relaxed, Really loved this.
Read about phil sloan or pf sloan, similar nightmare( eve of destruction)
sunday night missed out on major issues. what a great interview
Great musician, great Person an Icon of Rock n Roll, I love his music I have seen him on concert a few times he is just Amazing.
Listin to your music till' this day ahhhhhhhhhhh 30 years or more!!
John is one of the most humbled legends even if he had his moments of dominance among his peers who couldn't do.. he did it for the team... he was and always will be credence..
How are you, thank you for your love and support towards my music ❤️🎸
Fortunate Son pretty much says what so many Vietnam vets felt, then and even now. Thanks, John. RD the Vet 11bravo
According to interviews with band members 20 years later, the name's elements come from three sources: Tom Fogerty's friend Credence Newball, whose name they changed to form the word Creedence (as in creed)

the four members' renewed commitment to their band.
Bought Sweet Hitch-hiker on 45 in 1971/72 for 65 cents. I was 10yrs old. Wore it so thin, it only had one side!!
Love you John!!!! thanks for the Music xxxxxx
I love this guy
Great songwriter and musician - no one can take that away from him.
What is greater then a legend! A FOGERTY!
JOHN YOU WERE AND STILL ARE THE BEST!!!!
CCR's Royal Albert Hall concert in 1970 is about as close to rock and roll perfection as has ever been captured - Fogarty and the band at their peak.
Purchasing the book will help him to understand why he lost everything and rise from humble point of view
John you are the man ....If things and situations turned out different you would have kept CCR together , ""they lost out"" and we did on a lot of great music from CCR I love you John !! Lisa
How are you, thank you for your love and support towards my music ❤️🎸
I've seen Mr Fogerty in concert and I can say Kenny Aranoff (his current drummer) makes Doug Clifford look like a mistake.
@@jamesdye8473 He is so good that he still has time to star in movies, under the stage name Vin Diesel. ;)
1970 - 2020 Celebrating 50 years for the album........
COSMO'S FACTORY🎸- THE GREATEST STUDIO RECORDED ALBUM IN ROCKNROLL HISTORY.
You're looking better than ever, you handsome "guy"!
CCR wouldn't be anything without John and the band screwed him over. Its sad really.
John Fogerty is such a likable person.
An amazing arc of a life. The best could be to come-
John's experience is a case study in why playing with guys who are at a similar level of talent is so vital. This happens a lot where you play with guys since middle or high school but one guy is leaps and bounds ahead with his talent. I mean, who's going to keep up with a John Fogerty?
They had equal talent. And Tom was the original lead singer. But John ended up improving and they didn’t.
Wow! A bit of passionate anger in this comment of mine from 2 yrs ago.
How are you, thank you for your love and support towards my music ❤️🎸

John’s story is similar to Mark Farner’s dealings with the other members of Grand Funk Railroad.
And pf sloan( eve of destruction )
