I gotta say, I really like how quickly you caught onto the fact that this rant isn't necessarly just a criticism of Catholocism or Protestantism, but kind of illustrates, more broadly, just general religious indoctrination. Specifically it's very much about how people get their beliefs less from the actual texts that they're meant to follow and much more from the religious leaders who are pretty much telling them what are in the books. And it's easy to see why that works. The very first line in Bo Burnham's song "From God's Perspective" says "the books you wrote about me are way too thick." It's almost like that's by design. We just kind assume that religious leaders are actually scholars, when a lot of them totally aren't. Many, if not most, have an agenda. Anyway, great job on this reaction. You really seem to get the message.

If you want to know how Bo feels about what he does, listen to art is dead. As he states at the beginning of it, he says "this song isn't funny, but it helps me sleep at night." It's an expression of how he truly felt at the time.
I felt like you were separating faith and religion and that’s a good thing to point out if so. Organized religious institutions are more to blame for a lot of the negative aspects than individual people. There’s a lot of people who have faith in their God without being hateful and homophobic or whatever other bigotry. The church as an institution is the enemy of progress in a lot of instances
Riley that's what i was trying to convey. I even mentioned that i do actively go to church. The problem is that there have been way too many years of bad, false, and negative representation from the 'church people' doing things in "...the name of God", that its given the entire organic, spiritual, relational, authentic ecclesia's of the world and times past, a stain. Religion is not God. Religion is not Love. Religion is relational. De
I never understood this, why would faith and religion be seperate things? Theres no such thing as spirituality independent of religion. God is a concept that comes out of religion. And if you believe in god no matter the religion, whatever god you believe in is clearly one who doesnt care what happens on earth so why hold such a being in any esteem? People are just afraid of death and the promise of an afterlife lets people manage that fear. Its weakness and an unwillingness to accept reality.
@@nullakjg767 I know next to nothing about other religions, but at least in Christianity its taught that God gave humans free will, as something being forced to love is an empty love. Thats why God is held to such an esteem. He very much so could, but He doesn’t force us to love and serve him.
Watching you guys handle this live is incredibly powerful. I grew in a catholic school. Luckily i had parents that backed me when i kicked off when i asked questions. That’s tough for my mum how she grew up. But it was massive for us
Just found this channel. Y’all are the only reactors who caught the “They’ve been in love but they’ve been Edicted, who said the shouldnt, Benedict Did” bar.
A lot of people seem to think Bo says they’ve “been addicted”, but it’s Been Edicted, since the pope issues Edicts, one of which condemned gay marriage and homosexual relationships
This is like... a 3 or 4 minute "comedy song". I think it's telling that when dissecting it and what it means you both were able to get 20 minutes out of it. With editing. And I mean that in the best way possible
The worst thing a person can say to me when I'm dealing with problems is "ill pray for you." Like thanks for doing nothing I appreciate it. The only time I ever took that sentiment seriously was when my best friends mom would say it. They were no joke when it came to prayers. They would sit up every night for almost 2 hours saying their prayers. They would keep a notebook with all the people they said they would pray for and the reasons they are praying. They were the only people I've ever met that when they said they would pray for you, they were serious.
I get that you're trying to say they were more sincere than a lot of other people and that's great and all, but at the end of the day their super sincere all night prayers accomplished just as much as a politician's thoughts and prayers. Even if they had just spent all that time just thinking about a way to possibly help you it would still be better than hoping super duper hard that someone else is going to do it.
Should look in to Zombies by The Cranberries. A great song full of very deep and tragic Irish history. It's probably one you have heard before, but looking at it from an actual analytical standpoint, it's heartbreaking
Right? It took me an embarrassing amount of listens to work that line out, but now I laugh EVERY time while imagining Debra Messing fingering the Virgin Mary. The random specificity of that line is lethal
I was just introduced to your channel due to UA-cam algorithm (good to know the algorithm got something right for once) so I don't know if you have yet or not... but Burnham's "Welcome to the Internet"...
7:30 I really like this statement. I've grown up non-religious, and it took me a while to distinguish religion from faith in God. I'm glad to see that this is a sentiment shared by religious people, that religion can still be looked at critically while still having faith.
I love reaction videos, but most are badly rehearsed. You can tell these two are having authentic and genuine first reactions. Your producer has the right idea about isolating you two from seeing videos beforehand. I know it sucks, but the videos you guys are making are fire.
Specifically in the context of slavery, I’ve never understood African American Christianity. The Christian god LOVES him some slavery and human degradation. Why would anyone think this was a god of liberation and dignity? If you read the book he clearly is not.
Your discussion in this reaction makes me think you will really like Tim Minchin's The Pope Song (and many other things by Tim Minchin, but The Pope Song is the one most relevant to your discussion here and would be a good introduction to Tim Minchin if you haven't heard him before). And then if (when) you want more Tim Minchin, I'd recommend Thank You God next.
You two are very smart all I can say no wait lil shout out to whoever is pausing or producing u get props too people notice keep it up we all love it !
Regarding the impact of homophobia on queer kids I recommend checking out Hannah Gadsby's thoughts on the subject. She describes how the hate gets internalized really well and how hard it is to escape it.

A couple of thoughts: 1. I love honest reactions, and I'm thankful that you're willing to share your thoughts and feelings about this stuff. It's a new dynamic in life, we dont just get our own reactions and thoughts anymore. We can watch somebody else and learn how to see things through another set of eyes so to speak. Thanks for the time and effort you guys put in as creators. 2. Bo is like 6'5" or 6'6", something like that. Probably not much of a fighter though, you're right there lol. 3. I'm new to the channel, but if you guys haven't done any Tim Minchin yet I think he'd fit well if you do a deep dive around this sort of philosophical comedy. George Carlin too if you haven't started on his stuff yet.
Really loving your in depth comments. Resulted in a sub! Religion vs Relationship is an important conversation to be sure, and I feel that this Rant invites these conversations to be had. I feel that Bo was ACUTELY aware of his position as a white young man in America in 2010 and decided to address those issues that bothered him using his comedy, his bars, his words. He was 16 when this all started for him. He was a well educated, scholarly kid who graduated a year early to try out this comedy thing bc it dovetailed with his passion for theater, and, as you can see, it's kinda worked out for him...but not without struggles and pain, issues that caused him to walk away from live performances so that he could address those issues head on...he is a HIGHLY creative, intelligent introvert, a deep thinker with something to say and a talent for figuring out the very best way to express himself, because so many of us resonate with his comedic style of getting it all off his chest and into our guts, hearts, and minds. My son introduced me to him with "what.", his second special which is free here and on his UA-cam channel, where a lot, but not all, of his work can be found, 6 years ago, right after he gave up performing live comedy...but not giving up his dream. He wrote and directed Eighth Grade, was in The Big Sick, and Costarred in Promising Young Woman. Wrote the score for the Sesame Street movie that is still unreleased; a movie I will be seeing with my son and granddaughter when it comes out. Following Bo through his comedic progression from cheeky, cringey teen into the raw edged, dramatically over the top funny man he has become has been not only a pleasure but has impacted my life for the better bc of the conversations that have been, are being had between myself and others over things his comedy addresses. I am a 60 yr old grandmother who truly believes that Bo Burnham is doing more to ignite a fire in the hearts and minds of kids, especially creative and introverts, to get out there and create the world into the world that my generation envisioned but lost sight of. You will see what I mean as you get deeper into his work and what it's all about. He truly is a genius at getting his point across, using laughter to soften that reality gut punch, and we keep coming back for more, and bringing our friends and family along for the ride ✌🤣🥰🌟
The craziest part about this entire rant I saw you had mentioned bo 'probably' dropped out of college. He was 18/19 when he performed this special. He's also like 6'7 lol
I am non-religious now but I was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness. I believe that being a good person doesn’t require having an assigned religion. I never felt like I was part of a community or some of the other stuff people have said religion gave them growing up in the church. With that being said this video made me feel like what I wish going to church actually made me feel.
I remember as a young kid, like 9 or 10, asking a lot of questions in Sunday school. They never had a lot of answers and it usually ended with "you just have to believe". Long story short, I relate to this song A LOT. I'm not here to bash anyone who is religious or spiritual, it's just not for me. Stay safe and healthy out there everybody. Cheers.
I too was raised in a church. Eventually my core issue with it, was that it seemed to be trying to answer the question that drive people to religion in the first place. Who are we? Where did we come from? Where do we go? These questions have not been answered. To me, Jesus should be an invitation to ask these questions deeply. Not a shallow answer to them to make us feel good about the conclusions we have already drawn.
Can I just say I appreciate you guys talking about what you believe knowing that lots of people may find it offensive or disagree. I happen to feel pretty much the same way as you guys because I use my brain rather than faith to do the thinking for me. I have a channel and try to not censor myself and my sister is always trying to get me to not say anything that would offend somebody so that I don't lose subscribers. Screw that. If you aren't being genuine, you shouldn't have a channel.
Have you listened to Eff yet? If you haven't listened to Words Words Words, I would pull up genius lyrics after and realize how many bars are missed. It's insane ...

Bo has been a beast lyrically and with bars since his very first video.
Im not a fan of react channels since they never add anything critical, but you guys are doin it right, yall continue the conversations in the songs. Big fan keep it up.
If you want to know how Bo feels about what he does, listen to art is dead. As he states at the beginning of it, he says "this song isn't funny, but it helps me sleep at night." It's an expression of how he truly felt at the time.
Yay! I’ve been checking your channel everyday waiting for new content. Thanks so much for this ❤️ we appreciate you guys!
And we appreciate you! 💪🏾
De
You're sort of right on college, he got accepted to NYU for example, but decided to do comedy full time instead.
Just kinda seemed like his motif. Thanks for the support KalandosLajos
De
This was the first video of yours I've seen and it was the best reaction I've seen to Rant easily.
Wow! Thanks Sean. Really appreciate that!!!
De
@@De.Dre.Universe amen to that. I definitely agree with you.
Are churches not made of people? They weren't dropped from the sky like invading alien space pods!
But it was massive for us
I love listening to your thoughtful commentary on this. So refreshing to hear people my age have real conversations.
Thank you Lauren! Let's keep the conversations going
Finally the algorithm got it right. So glad I found this video and your channel. Well done. You killed this.
'Art is dead' by him is another one you guys should check out
You need to react to “I’m bo yo”! It’s one of the first videos he put out when he was really young and it has BARS
so cool to see such a raw vid on shit ive loved for over a decade.
Bo actually got famous while still in high school. He signed a recording contract as soon as he turned 18.
I stand behind every single syllable of this.
I love y'alls commentary. The honesty is fire.
This is like... a 3 or 4 minute "comedy song". I think it's telling that when dissecting it and what it means you both were able to get 20 minutes out of it. With editing. And I mean that in the best way possible
dude in beige gets it way more. very refreshing to see him enjoy the song as it progresses and commentate his views very clearly
Glad you enjoyed the reaction and comments that I made! (Guy in beige) aka Dre
🔥🔥👍👍
I always like the conversation you guys have. Thanks for the content
Thanks for watching and the comment!
Should look in to Zombies by The Cranberries. A great song full of very deep and tragic Irish history. It's probably one you have heard before, but looking at it from an actual analytical standpoint, it's heartbreaking
I’ve had this exact hope as well, that they might eventually do a reaction to this! I’d love to hear their thoughts
Don't skip over that Debra messing bar
I was waiting for this one. I am positive this will be interesting.
7:30 I really like this statement. I've grown up non-religious, and it took me a while to distinguish religion from faith in God. I'm glad to see that this is a sentiment shared by religious people, that religion can still be looked at critically while still having faith.
Lol oh you want bars? ‘Words Words Words’. Go. Now. Lol
Thought I wasn’t gonna like y’all’s commentary but it really grew on me
I love reaction videos, but most are badly rehearsed.
Looking for Bars? Words words words!! Love you guys realness! Thank you
You two are very smart all I can say no wait lil shout out to whoever is pausing or producing u get props too people notice keep it up we all love it !
Regarding the impact of homophobia on queer kids I recommend checking out Hannah Gadsby's thoughts on the subject. She describes how the hate gets internalized really well and how hard it is to escape it.
They clearly never watched Will and Grace. That Debra messing line is so good
Right?
I like that he's listened to Fort Minor, Mike Shinoda's rap band or whatever, it's where I'm recognizing the violin is from.
Just found you guys, excellent react content, I love that you let it run a bit instead of stopping at every other word. Keep it up!
Bo is actualy 6'6 (196cm)
Wow not just another reaction channel. I really dig the input and experiences you guys tied into the video. Honestly impressed. Well done
I loved this reaction video. Real recognize real and I enjoyed you guys enjoying Bo!
Really love watching your reactions to Bo.
y’all have to react to Art is Dead! I first heard it a few years ago and i’m still thinking about it.
15:00-15:10 he’s actually 6’6 not 6’1 and he didn’t drop out of college, he actually got into Harvard but didn’t go because he wanted to peruse the Comedian/Song Writer/Entertainer/Producer career that he has now
Corrections: he's 6'5", and it was NYU not Harvard.
Yesss Love this Bo stuff! I highly recommend Words Words Words
Bo is a whole 19 years old in this special. It’s bananas how clever he is
He was just a baby in this. Crazy we all watched him turn 30
These Bo vids made me a subscriber, you guys are so intelligent and give really cool perspectives. More please.
1. This was a great breakdown. You guys really knocked it out of the park.
2. That little Aerosmith line was phenomenal!
A couple of thoughts:
And we appreciate you taking the time to give this feedback. Its people and comments like this that keep us going. Thanks sir!!!
De
He truly is a genius at getting his point across, using laughter to soften that reality gut punch, and we keep coming back for more, and bringing our friends and family along for the ride ✌🤣🥰🌟
im sure someone has said it already but the yahweh line is absolutely incredible
Words words words and comedy are a must imo
Very good dialogue. I would make the opacity 100% on the clip you're watching. Messed with my eyes a bit. Great videos guys. Subbed
I watched this thinking it was going to be the Kanye Rant but I'm glad I stuck around. This was such a good discussion.
I enjoy how insightful you guys make comments about the topic and the subject matter ❤
Cheers.
Bo is actually 6'5 btw.
Look up bo on Conan. He’s the same height, like 6’5” I think.
Just caught that Debrah Messing Will and Grace bar for the first time. And I heard this probably 50 times 😅😅
The Eminem comment made me think of his opening line to Words, Words, Words, "I'm an effeminate Eminem, a Slim Shady lady."
Also, From the Perspective of God is another one he does & it regards all religions in it
Bo's early stuff gets pretty wild
