Hey, that's me in the video. :)
I've always said: blindfolded gaming is less a challenge of memory, and more a challenge of routing. Can you make a route that consistently gets you to where you need to go? That's what playing a game blindfolded amounts to. Hours of experimenting with setups until you get something that works consistently.
The memory aspect comes into play with being able to remember which backup strats correspond to which scenarios-- which is a skill that speedrunning _in general_ needs!
*Celeste Golden Strawberries intensify*
Actually, he can if he keeps going. We both know that he is definitely capable
“It sounds like the balls!” - TheJWittz (2021)
This, exactly this.
"I think you can pull out"-TheJWittz (2021)
This was so great! It's so fun to see people trying out blindfolded Super Mario 64 for the first time, and the excitement of finally getting that star for the first time is so awesome! Katun, Bubzia, and Nobori are all incredible, and they've got amazing content going in-depth on blindfolded gaming/ routing/ strategies/ other interesting stuff! The time they've put into learning, creating, and mastering blindfolded strategies for Super Mario 64 really shows, it's amazing what they can do!
I'm really glad that the blindfolded Mario 64 guide could help you, this was such an entertaining video! :D Congrats on getting the star, it's a huge achievement!
I am glad you tried this challenge and enjoyed it! It is always very nice to see others try this out and get a feeling for the runs we do and love :)
@TheJWittz the amazing speedrunner is here
Running and Routing a game that was never blindfolded before is honestly such an underrated experience. I wish that more people would give it a look and i am glad that through GDQ and a lot of media attention that this subgenre of speedrunning gets finally it´s beautiful time to shine.
I always thought it was such a neat idea. I always like challenges in games, self imposed or otherwise, that take away something that's seemingly vital to beating the game, but the idea of taking away the one sense that many people would say is required to play any game at all still blows my mind.
i dont see how it can be done
I *see* what you did there.
@@AkaiAzul No you didn’t
That’s what he meant to say 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Yes, but I can hear how it can be done.
I don’t see the joke.
The word for seeing even without sight. Is experience.
and here i thought it was the eye of thundera.
Mad respect to any- and everybody who does the blindfolded runs!
Moral of the story: Never take anything for granted, not even what you were born with.
Did you just say for granite?
Broke: playing Mario 64 regular
Woke: playing Mario 64 blindfolded
Woker: watching a blindfolded Mario 64 video blindfolded
In 144p quality
2x speed on
JustJulyo nah, 720+ so you don't see twice the frames
I feel like someone’s going to get r/wooooshed here...
Turns out a guy faking a blindfolded speedrun was the perfect way to drum up interest and explain the impressiveness of a niche category!
13:19 "16 hour run" - JWittz in shambles
There's some serious time travel in mario speedrunning when they can do a "16 hour run in half this time"
This may be one of my all time favorite videos of yours. I gotta try this for myself.
Someone get this man the Sword of Omens.Grant him sight beyond sight!
*high-fives* i see you too are one of culture.
14:04 - Oh hey, that's me.
I think a lot of people assume that blindfolded players are like normal players with super memories. We're really more like meticulous planners. It's all about experimenting, finding what works, taking good notes and being willing to look for a better strategy if your current one isn't consistent enough. Patience, attention to detail and perseverance are probably the most important traits (along with some general curiosity).
Great video, I think you really showed what learning blindfolded strategies is like.
I am literally wearing the exact same shirt right now!
I just love my chest pocket charmander!
Hey TheJWittz. I wanna say that you were a big part of my childhood and helped shape me into the person i grew up to be. Before I was however old in like elementary school and now i’m a freshman in high school, and my love for pokémon never diminished through that time, and I’d like to credit that to you. I found your videos really entertaining and the top 10s were what really got me talking about pokemon. thank you for that dude.
You've also gotta keep in mind, people doing blindfolded runs have probably been speedrunning the game for years and basically have the movements down to a muscle memory. If they end up out of synch, they'd probably just rather die and get back on track. Beyond that, they probably also have intentionally mapped out unique routes that are easier to maintain the same position, such as feeling around certain walls or listening to certain sound cues.
This category does remind me of that one blind man who successfully beat Ocarina of Time by relying on sound cues such as hitting walls with swords and listening to torches. I always thought that story was really cool. Maybe that's what inspired the blindfolded run in the first place?
Found this man after CallMeKevins video and now I’m obsessed
Keep up the good work man, you still make some of the best content on the platform
The is wholesome.
Been watching this channel for years-thanks for revisiting some of our most nostalgic memories with us, together
The best part of this was absolutely the bits of text that pop up - they all made me laugh a lot =P
*Jwitz attempts to blindfold this game without practice* Me: This game is going to swallow him whole
"People can do a full 16 hour run in half this time?!" Man, I guess speedrunners have suddenly become gods if they can play 16 hours in only 30 minutes! xD
CallMeKevin says hello Josh
Anyone else come here to see who Josh is from the new callmekevin video?
The King of the nerd
yeepp
You do a great job of editing both to keep the time snappy and to keep it fun to look at when you linger in one spot.
I feel like another huge disadvantage you might have had in this run was the lack of notches on the switch controller's joystick. Getting consistent angles is reliant on those notches. It's especially noticeable when you were trying to get the chomp star after pounding the pole - you were almost never able to go straight left which is probably the only reason you didn't get the star immediately despite doing the setup correctly
No matter how well you know this game being blindfolded will always make it really hard
Doing the first level of Mario blindfold is kinda like doing one of the harder cod zombies Easter eggs, memorizing a ton of random buttons or steps, restarting a lot, something that average players can’t figure out without a yt video
i watched Call me kevins video nerdoff and i was like josh looks and sounds familiar, AND IT WAS YOU I WAS LIKE WOW
It’s because of videos like this that I wish UA-cam gave me favorites option for my very favorite liked videos. Excellent work as always Mr. JWittz
8:50, makes sure to say able-sighted before run starts, says the R word in the run 😅😂😂
First off I want to say, congrats on actually getting the star, I can always appreciate speedruns and blindfolded runs are even better. I will say, you made this challenge a lot harder by using the switch version. Not only is the camera controls harder, but the control stick is also un-optimal due to not having notches so the setups are a lot harder to get precise.
Shoutout to RockLeeSmile and his super meat boy speedrun where he used his feet to play. not blind but still super weird.
Good sound design can do that.
I sorta live under a rock so I didn't know there was an actual blindfolded gaming community
Thanks for the great video!
This is very interesting to me! I watched my brother play this game back in the 1990s on the N64 and now that I am adult who still loves to play video games even though I am legally blind. I am considered low vision and not totally blind because I still have remaining vision. The game I play most of the time now is called Spelunky. It is a roguelike platformer.
How do you do with spelunky? And what is the easiest and hardest game for you to play?
This was fantastic. Great video!
"I'm trying to go straight, right? Go forward?"
*immediately takes a hard right into the pond*
Officially a letsplay channel.
Woo!!! Worth the upload time wait!! Man, I want to speedrun something blindfolded now
This game needs a remaster desperately
It got one on the DS
@@aaronr.265 that wasn't really a remaster
jbfarley it was kind of what people want out of a remaster, enhanced visuals, more levels, new experiences.
@@jbfarley I mean, it was.
By definition, it was a remaster/remake.
Man seeing your final successful run for the Chain Chomp star was so rewarding. Proud of you!
What blows me away is that he wore a blindfold... rather than just turn the screen away.
Would have made a less funny video and harder to prove he couldn't see
Jwitzz talkin about a blindolfded 16 star run while Nabori did 70 stars sub 1:27
This was wild but I knew you’d get it! Nicely done dude
I'm glad you put the text with what we are all thinking
And now Bubzia's done a 70-star blindfolded run at this SGDQ
Nice signed copy! I got my Mario 64 cartridge signed by Mr. Martinet.
RIP in peace Mario Gastonichi 31/03/2021
It's Mario Mario
ZXMany is showing up in so many places these days. I did not expect to find him here, though!
sm64 is difficult for me already with my sight, mad respect to anyone who tries this blindly. Great content as always jwittz!
Half the challenge is the camera, blindfolded runs removes that
best jwittz video in years
I haven't watched a JWittz video in a while, but this man looking pretty fresh
I already had so much respect for speed runners but people do this blindfolded? I have even more respect now and props to Jwittz for even attempting this let alone actually teaching himself how to get 1 star
This really made me very happy! Congrats!
AKA Man struggles to beat Bob-Omb Battlefield for 25 minutes.
This is amazing and ridiculous. People figure out the craziest things
Anyone else here because of CallmeKevin
This was so entertaining to watch! Great content as always!
Dude you have my dream in the beginning of the video. I've always wanted my copy of Super Mario 64 signed by Shigeru Myiamoto
That was an experience! No way I could do that... Probably the only game I know that well would be Star Wars: KOTOR and maybe KOTOR II.
Would've been the best prank ever to have the celebration screen say "Mario Wings to The Sky" for Josh to see after he takes off the blindfold. Just for the split second where he thinks he somehow completed that star
"Hopefully the camera looks good"
*it doesn't*
😂😂
Jwitt doing SM64 content. I like it.
I mean, I’d happily try Punch-Out on NES blindfolded, but Super Mario 64? A game in 3D space? You couldn’t *pay* me.
Good job, praise the progress
Accurate assessment of the white castle area in Code Vein
Why was he putting his glasses on in the intro if he’s going to use a blindfold? Lol.
This is so confusing to watch as someone who’s never seen or played this game. But the music is so good.
There is new meaning to the animated intro where he puts on glasses, or for them to turn all black
Another *huge* handicap of the Switch version is using a controller without notches. In 3D games, it's imperative that for any setup where you need to hold forward, back, up-right, etc. that you get the exact same angle on the joystick everytime, and that's just unfeasible without notches like on the original N64 controller or GC controller on Virtual Console.
this was more hectic to watch than the twitch plays pokemon playthrough. lol
The lack of notches (like on n64 and gc controllers) for perfect angles on the control sticks must have made getting the right angle a lot harder on the switch version
I ended up cutting the segment for time unfortunately, but the Switch version at least lets you move with the DPad - KIND of like notches
Now I'm curious how far I could get into my favorite game, Legend of Mana, if I tried to play it blinded. I could MAYBE get into the first town, but I wouldn't have a lot of sound effects to work with.
Gives a new meaning to the term "blind run"
ProZD would crush this if he memorized all the level layouts, considering he just knows the Peter Pan script by heart. Also waiting for inevitable Dark Souls Trilogy No Hit Dancepad Blindfolded.
Great video I would love to see more this is basically just Nintendo fact of the day
This is why rumble is a great feature for games
Should try this with Renee guiding you.
“I’ve never been happier to die” bruh
Mario cam is humanity’s worst mistake.
Shall we starting calling your friend "masochist mike?"
Comment to fight the algorithm shadow realming this amazing video!
a day the jwittz uploads is a great day
I love that he's backseating himself.
NEW JWITTZ HOURS
Thanks for another great video!
I loved this so much!
Loved this. Please also do some SWSH battles blindfolded!
“ I heard you Goomba” infamous line from the faked blindfold SM64 speedrun
if you want to see more blindfolded sm64 check out Nobori. he is another record holder in blindfolded and he has some unique strats
I just know that in the future we'll see a Mario 64 speedrun blindfolded, game muted and with one hand
This makes me want to see a channel where toph does blind playthroughs of games
@Conner Wine yeah it would be hard to do right. What I was saying. And it's silly and mostly a joke, is thinking about what it would actually be like.
"That was literally just muscle memory"
MAN blindfolded speed running looks so cool
Haha cheese thumbnail is hilarious 🤣
Me watching this video with my 2 eyes: Come on how could you miss it it's right there
how painful was it to watch your self play the game blind folded during editing
The jump away from the chain chomp was agonizing 😂
