I'm glad JWittz posted this since I'm always amazed by how every video-game UA-camr says "I played this obscure video-game for three years straight when I was a kid." It boggles my mind how much free time kids had in the early aughts!

Not possible to do. There are many games that were finished but never released, and are only known to those that worked on them. Then there's remasters, ports, and sequels, many of have the same name as their originals (KIller Instinct (SNES and XBone), Super Smash Bros (64 and Wii U/3DS, Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis and '06)). There's also the fact that many games have different titles between regions, like in the UK where all Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games have to be renamed Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles. Unless someone with an eidetic memory were shown every video game in existence (at least everything that counts as a video game) there's no way someone could recite them all from memory.

@@SelecaoOfMidas I always wonder, both with Steam and the Eshop. Is it really that expensive to have a couple reviewers curate it from the beggining? Like, no need to finish every game, just play 20 mins each. Utter garbage asset flip is very easy to differentiate from mediocre but functional and original.

@@lukewhitsell942 No, you can watch it on literally any modern device ever. Do you count it as watching TV if you are watching it on your phone? Shouldn't you count youtube too then? Why not watching movies at the theater?
Here's an obvious idea for a follow up video: How MANY good video games can you play? Or you can make it more interesting by breaking it down further. How many good games can you play within each genre? How many good games can you 100%? How many good games could you play if you divided your time equally across all genres?
When you're in school, you have so many freedom and choices to do without a care in the world to do anything. I usually finished video games due to amount time I be putting in. Now I work and have to balance all of my hobbies. I'm so behind on movies, animes and video games. So many good animes and video games to watch. I had to make a schedule to keep all of this balanced. Exactly I havent even finished with naruto shippuden yet
dude thats a great idea to have anime days and video game days, been having a hard time balancing it myself. I usually just watch an episode while eating (im a pretty slow eater). Personally I found the least time for hobbies in college cuz that was just homework 24/7, high school was ok but still had homework after the 8 hours in school, at least with work its just 9 to 5 then free to do whatever, minus other responsibilities?
I think this might be one of my favorite videos of yours. The work you put into this is incredibly evident and it's immensely interesting. Thank you for taking the time to do this. A shame it isn't performing as well as it should.
Even just accounting for personal taste, the question suddenly becomes 'Do I want to play every *good* game?'. Aside from the fact that sitting all day staring at a screen negatively impacts your life, so does forcing yourself to commit your leisure time to games you're not enjoying. It may even lead to you harming your own love for gaming overall, so the answer being no is more of a positive overall in my opinion. Just play what YOU think is good and you'll be gucci, that's what really matters in the long run.
@@azuretheegg8308 Zip-Lash ruined my marriage. That, g a m e, killed my whole family. My dog would be alive for not that game. Chibi Robo... killed me.
I play very casual games & stick to let's plays when it comes to skill games, but even so, video games are interesting to me. Awesome video, great job!
Seeing all these comments from people saying they play over seven hours a day, I can only assume that you are all teenagers, or at least unemployed. If you work forty hours a week, then you usually only get one hour of gaming a day, if that much. There have been many times where I haven't been able to play games for a week or more just because I've been too busy. Being an adult stinks.
Ugh, I can definitely agree. Between my dead-end retail job and my working towards my engineering degree in college, I've had to miss out on so many new releases due to my focus on exams and projects.
I could certainly fit in more than 1 hour of gaming a day alongside my 40 hour job. Taking into account travel, exercise, eating, maintaining basic hygiene ect. I could definitely find 2 or 3 hours to play a video game every night. It would just inadvertently mean doing absolutely nothing else with my free time.
I have a monstrous backlog and I prioritize games with a "save the best for last" mentality. This video was the EXACT wake up call I needed. I'm 23, my life is already a quarter of the way done. I'm only just playing Persona 5 now and I still haven't played FF7, Dragon Quest 11, Mario Odyssey, BoTw, Three Houses, Xenoblade 2 or even the last three most recent Pokemon games. And now I realize that if I prioritize games with the mind set of saving the ones I KNOW I'll enjoy the most for last, there's a very real possibility that I may die before I even get to them. And that's not even taking into account of books, TV, anime, movies or the number of games I plan on playing infinitely like MMOS and fighting games too. There's just too much good stuff that already exists AND is always coming out. So its time I take control of my life and prioritize games that I know I'll like the most and if I'm all out of that, THEN I'll dive into the niche ones that I'm interested in. I was really hyped when Bravely Default 2 was announced. I need to remember how that made me feel and only buy the games that make me feel that way. It's time to stop building the backlog and start assblasting it!
This is a fascinating video. I'm a Chemistry teacher, so I already love science, data, and experiments. This video is a fantastic study! You covered parameters, your procedure and the asterisks around them; your results, data, and methods of collection; even better, in your conclusion, you talked about the limitations of your study and ways your study could be revised or improved. This is an incredible example, and I may even use this in my own class to teach students about the broad and detailed nature of a legitimate research study.
The 1 hour a day sounds about right. It's a lot easier to just laze around on the internet than it is to work myself up to actually putting in the effort to play something.
Oh silly Jwittz, before the age of 15 is prime time for gaming. Not joking, I started at age4, mastered Devil May Cry 2 by age 5 and I literally played a video game everyday, unless I got grounded, all the way to age 21, where I still play today. At least 3-5 hours a day with my record being 25 hours straight. Sure, I'm an outliar, but I've met SO MANY kids in my life that have similar stories and I still know a few that haven't really changed. Even when we work and exercise, we still find time to game.
JWittz: "If I ever do something more important, it'll cut into my average daily game time." Little Link Wittz: "HYAAK!" I've said it before, but congrats on that front.
True. I rarely actually complete a game and I've replayed lots of games over and over. Then, there are also games which you can literally not complete, because new stuff always gets added. The fact that gaming isn't the entirety of your free-time also makes sense. I've watched and rewatched countless movies/TV-shows. Even if I were to know which games I consider to be good before I play them, I wouldn't have enough time.
By golly, I think it's fair to say this here is the best video you have ever made Josh, amazing all the way through out, I loved it even though I hate hearing how I'm gonna die and leave forever and not gonna get to make any more great experiences
This video was fascinating. The stats and thought process was really enjoyable and refreshing from what I normally watch. Thanks for effort you put into this video.
Truth be told, sometimes (like right now) I'm so exhausted from work that I just wanna lay down and stare at a tv or phone screen without moving a muscle.
Absolutely loved the video. Thanks for addressing several if not all of the potential flaws in the data and how they could skew the numbers. The vid was just fascinating, I guess I’m weird for dumping 10+ hours a day whenever I play something like Terraria 😭
My personal goal is to play every game in my own collection that I care about, which comes to about 150 unplayed games out of my 650+ game library spanning across all my consoles/handhelds/PC
I've been watching you for a long time now, and this is definitely one of the most interesting videos you've ever done. keep it up man, no stagnation here
Well, I don't care about playing every single good game out there, since there are many good games in genres I simply don't care about. But even trying to simply play every single game that interests me... is a herculean task (especially since my favourite genre is RPGs)
There are so many good games that I only ever buy game snow if they are on sale with a few exceptions such as Silksong when it releases. It's totally possible if you devote all your leisure time to games, cut down on sleep, some games can be played with one hand so eat while playing, get someone else to do other activities for you like shopping and cooking.

2:50 The Switch has more games than the PS4 now? That's kinda scary but impressive at the same time
Scary when you realize most of that is becoming asset flips and shovelware... It's becoming the Wii on steroids.
As someone who thinks about this a lot, I strangely felt some relief knowing that I'll just have to accept I can't play em all but will just cherish the ones I love. And never waste time on a bad game again
“The Average American spends over half of their free time watching TV”
...I’m sorry what
cable television is highly inferior to every other source of entertainment out there. Its not an opinion, its a fact.
Does Anime count as TV?
@@Katpasniss It does not if you live in a country where anime is not broadcasted on tv :)
ElWeeabooDelBarri so you don’t count watching Netflix as watching TV then?
@@lukewhitsell942 No, you can watch it on literally any modern device ever. Do you count it as watching TV if you are watching it on your phone? Shouldn't you count youtube too then? Why not watching movies at the theater?
Here's an obvious idea for a follow up video:
How MANY good video games can you play?
Or you can make it more interesting by breaking it down further.
How many good games can you play within each genre? How many good games can you 100%? How many good games could you play if you divided your time equally across all genres?
When you're in school, you have so many freedom and choices to do without a care in the world to do anything. I usually finished video games due to amount time I be putting in. Now I work and have to balance all of my hobbies. I'm so behind on movies, animes and video games. So many good animes and video games to watch. I had to make a schedule to keep all of this balanced. Monday, tuesday, Wednesday are my anime days 5 or 10 episodes in those days. Thursday is a random day, I could either play video game, watch anime, tune on Netflix for a movie, or just sleep. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is my video game days. Sometimes on Sunday nights, I rarely do a anime night and just watch 5 episodes before I turn in for work. This is how far behind I am from watching anime, you guys know I haven't watch dragonball super yet, you know I havent watch any of the new anime after year of 2014?
6:31 Gaston? Ah yes, you’re a man of culture
You put a lot of work into this, interesting video dude well done!
Now I know I feel when I'm trying to finish a game before another game gets released
25% of every game ever made are "good"? (80% or higher score)
To quote a legend, "It's hard to make bad games. It's like making bad water."
Between my dead-end retail job and my working towards my engineering degree in college, I've had to miss out on so many new releases due to my focus on exams and projects.
the pandemic definitely contributes to increased gaming time though unless this is how much they would play before than you would be right
I could certainly fit in more than 1 hour of gaming a day alongside my 40 hour job. Taking into account travel, exercise, eating, maintaining basic hygiene ect. I could definitely find 2 or 3 hours to play a video game every night. It would just inadvertently mean doing absolutely nothing else with my free time.
This video kind of reminded me of a classic Game Theory video, back when he actually focused on math and science.
Maybe you could but it would take a VERY long time especially with how long some of these good games are
The more open he is with his sense of humor, the funnier he is. Keep it up! We're loving the content
It depends what you speculate as “Good” games
Especially if “Good” is merely a scale, and there’s higher ones like “Great” or “Perfect”
Yeah, the Metacritic page of games with a score over 80 is very questionable, I could easily reduce it by 50% with barely any effort.
Stares at my hours of Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem Three Houses with a little shame...
1:00 Being able to control a computer by tapping your fingers on where the keyboard is is actually an impressive skill!
You should have hired a python developer to automate recording the “good games list” using scraper software. It would have taken a lot less time.
The effort u put into these videos u are making now is really amazing. Your videos has also become really creative and diverse. Awesome work man.
alt title: i used the government to prove that videogames are awesome
Man, Jwitzz's videos just keep getting better and better. So happy I subscribed to you years ago. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Croatia👋🏻🇭🇷
Of course you can. Melee players have been playing the only good game for 20 years now
Zach Funkhouser good job melee man but I beg to differ (it’s not brawl)
"The average gamer gets 1.5 hours a day of gaming, and you can't play all good games in that time."
Me: *4 hours per day*
Me: "you **FOOL**
As a LONG time fan, who watched that Spelunky LP when it was first uploaded, that ending made my DAY.
JWittz has officially become Polygon Unraveled and I am SO here for it
Oh silly Jwittz, before the age of 15 is prime time for gaming.
JWittz: "If I ever do something more important, it'll cut into my average daily game time."
Little Link Wittz: "HYAAK!"
I've said it before, but congrats on that front.
You seriously have been coming up with the coolest video ideas for a while now. Keep it up!
NO PROBABLY NOT SEEING NEW GAMES COME OUT RELATIVELY FREQUENTLY
How can this video be so good and so depressing at the same time?
I’ve actually tried to at least partially do this, so now I have over 2000 hours of games I haven’t played/finished.
When Old School Runescape officially came back, I spent 100 hours a week for like the first month of playing it. Those were some dark times indeed.
Your underestimating my gaming abilitiies?
Absolutely loved the video. Thanks for addressing several if not all of the potential flaws in the data and how they could skew the numbers. The vid was just fascinating, I guess I’m weird for dumping 10+ hours a day whenever I play something like Terraria 😭
I'm still trying to play all the good SNES and 64 games. I still don't have a Switch yet cause there's so many old games I play
My personal goal is to play every game in my own collection that I care about, which comes to about 150 unplayed games out of my 650+ game library spanning across all my consoles/handhelds/PC
This is why I’m going to be putting my brain into a computer when I die so I can finally play every good game ever made.
Holy shoot dude, you are the bomb for getting this deep into this.
This was a great and informative video, thank you for taking the time to take on and share this sweet project with us!
Remember Gamepro? Those short, reviews with multiple writers comments and scores? Always loved how they approched reviewing games.
I am still insanely impressed by the new JWittz Intro
Yeah, some games I just play to play. I have a lot of gamer 'comfort foods'. Amazing research JWittz
