#FooFighters #Everlong
I sat next to Dave on a flight from Seattle to LA once. It was my first time flying alone, I was probably 12 or 13, and I was very nervous. At this point I had no clue who the Foo Fighters or Nirvana were, so I literally had no clue who he was. He could tell I was super uneasy, so he talked to me and was super reassuring, asking me my name and introducing himself, just generally being a really friendly guy. He talked about how he played music, but never mentioned the bands, and never really played up how famous he was. He helped me get my carryon out of the luggage compartment and told me to have a fun time as I was going to disneyland with my uncle who lived in irvine, and that was it. I saw a couple people ask him for a picture when we got off the plane, but I never realized who he was until a year or so later when I mentioned a "Dave" who played music and took some pictures with people to some friends who asked me if it was him, and it just blew my mind. Really, really genuine guy, and an experience I'll never forget.
Beautiful, thank you so much sharing. What a special moment in time!
He is truly a wonderful human being. What a great memory, thanks for sharing!
This is amazing. Glad to see he is the kind of person I hoped he would be.
@FooCards88 He learned to fly too.
That's amazing, it just proves how much of a lovely dude he is! :)
“I don’t know anything about guitar, I’m not a trained musician, I can’t read music, I don’t know what these chords are” proceeds to write one of the most iconic songs of all time. Rock on Dave.
Wow! I gotta admit guys, I never thought my comment would get this kind of response. I’m just happy to know everybody is such a fan. Here’s to many more years of Foo!
Makes me feel better as a musically illiterate guitarist of 20+ years lol.
It usually takes fresh ears to come up with something very original. Trained musicians tend to stick to the classic chords they were taught. Dave basically created his own because he had no "rules" to follow.
@@BornIn1500 that's a great way to put it
I've played with a young man who doesn't know the difference between F# and Dm but can write kick ass songs! He plays all instruments and sings.. Check him out here on UA-cam or Spotify. Diamond Nugget
IIRC same story with Van Halen. Taught on the piano but never learned guitar via a formal setting.

Solid... But slow down it's not like a Lennon McCartney tune or something.
@Hayden nah man this song's a gem
@@antonioval3035 Why did Lennon McCartney write the Golden Slumbers Medley? When a drummer is just gonna knock em out in 30 years with a couple chords he can't even name cause he thinks the high strings are cymbals and the low strings are drums... That by his own admission he ripped off from Sonic Youth. Yeah you really got us there!
Definitely plus it’s my favorite song by them.
@Hayden music is completely subjective. To this person, it’s one of the best songs ever written. There’s no way to prove that it’s not. No need to argue over it
Played this version at my brothers funeral yesterday. The perfect song for the perfect brother. ❤️

Dave is so good he plays the drums on a guitar.
yes
Such a wickedly accurate, honest statement from him!!
Not that it's important for the song, but James Hetfield (rhythm guitarist from Metallica) actually said the same. In a commercial for Yousician, he said: "I basically play drums on guitar."
This is so good but you must hear “Whispering Wolf” or “The Wave Acoustic ” by SLT 🤘🐺
He's the best guitarist drummer
“Im not a trained musician” says the legend who played drums and lead/guitar for two of the most influential bands of the 90s and 00s. Dave kills it
Dave is just fucking around and finding out.
Passion will always overcome adversity. Not to in any way minimize legit adversity, but more to say hang on to your passion. Formal training, proper connections, ideal physick, or whatever looks like it's holding you back, don't let it. Magic comes from so many unexpected places.
@@haggleboggle most rock musicians I play with never had formal lessons either. Same for me. I had a guy show me a couple chords and just took over from there. Same with drums. I was shown how to ride the high hat while alternating bass and snare and the rest is just practice and discovery. My first entire band was like that. We figured out what we were doing as we went. It goes really fast too. You improve so fast as long as you put in the practice. It’s probably way more fun that way actually.
He is awesome, but not the lead Guitarist of the Foo Fighters.

Went to a mental institution for like a month when I was 15. I’d spend all my time in the main room hovering over the little radio they had. I wouldn’t let anyone change the station 103.9. Like clockwork. I mentioned in another comment that I can't think of a single bad time in my life that I was listening to this song. It's always been a highlight of the highlights, if you will.
💯
I couldn’t have said it any better.
Yeah. The 90's and early 2000's was a good time to be alive.
I know for me it just reminds me of being a teenager with all this inner turnmoil for the first time.
Just having like a first real awakening to life in general and not knowing how to handle it, but being able to take comfort and solace on songs like these, if only for a moment.
SAME!!! 💘
I walked down the aisle to this song on Halloween 2020. My husband knew this was my favorite song, so he learned to play it on the guitar in one night and surprised me with a "concert" when I got home from work one night. Tomorrow, I have to make his funeral arrangements.I've been putting off listening to this particular song since he was put on hospice two weeks ago. It was painful but cathartic. I'm glad I decided to watch this particular video instead of the original video❤
Fuck cancer
I'm sorry for your loss. What a great guy to learn and play that for you! I hope listening to Everlong again (and you must), brings out the sweet memories of him after the tears fade.
I’m so sorry. 💔
Damn girl, I am so sorry!
Music has a way of helping us transcend the crap hand life gives us sometimes. The Foo Fighters (and Everlong) in particular is an incredible song and your husband loved you so much that he learned to play it for you. What an amazing gift. I too suffered a horrible loss to the love of my life - my high school sweetheart - my husband - the father of our 2 beautiful daughters - my best friend…to an illness. Time will pass and you might find that it hurts a little less, but this song will anchor you to him forever and your feelings will eventually become more melancholy than sad. It’s been nearly 6 years since our loss and I can finally listen to Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley’s version) without breaking down into a puddle of tears and find that feeling that bonded us to that song with a smile in my heart.
I’m so sorry for your loss. And you’re right…Fv

“I’m not a trained musician” means “everything I do is just because of raw talent and inspiration.”
It’s really inspiring. I mean most of the greats aren’t trained musicians, just people who were inspired and picked up a guitar.
He is trained, just not in the traditional sense of going to a school and being taught music theory. At the end of the day though, every great musician and composer uses the same things: their ears and their heart
Sometimes being trained makes you just think like everyone else.
Gotta respect his honesty. That really means that his songs have somethig special. I've been trying for so long to learn reading music, believing that i would be somehow better. Now, this video, almost gives me an excuse to skip learning intervals, modes, arpeggios. Even though I enjoy watching Adam Neely and Rick Beato explaining what appears to be rocket science :) anyone agrees?
Yeah dude, now i see it's not a problem as longs i can have fun and use my talent
My dad does not undestand a single word of english.
I just played this song for him on my acoustic guitar.

And son was proud to share something he loves with his father. Sounds like a bonding moment to me ♥️ so congrats my friend. Keep doing what you love.
It’s bonkers to me that he’s this incredible and successful musician and yet doesn’t know what chords are which. It’s pretty damn inspiring, really.
Learning what chords you play is definitely helpful, but you still know what sounds good.

This may sound screwed up but anytime I’ve been drinking and have had a bad day I turn this version of the song on while im trying to sober up in the shower and it always brings me some weird peace of mind and makes me forget what has happened throughout the day that may have gotten me down. He's a musical prodigy, to be honest. Composer, lyricist, singer, drummer, guitarist - all solid. And America's pirate-talking sweetheart.
I'm so glad that Dave didn't end his music career after Kurt's death.

This song is pure raw emotion. Dave's explanation on how the song came to be, is just icing on the cake.
Sorry I just had to State the obvious cuz this man's music makes this 50-year-old cry like a 4-year-old when I hear his music.
It really is! It’s very raw, honest, vulnerable emotion. I’ve loved this song since I first heard it decades ago & when I heard the acoustic version maybe 10 years ago, I immediately thought I’d love for it to be my first dance song at my wedding. We’ll see…
Music touches the soul. If a song like this doesn't make you cry, I might wonder what was wrong with you!
Hey man, as a 49 year old man, I just want to give you permission to cry... its not reserved for 4 year olds. (c:
@YamiOni I have twisted the meaning of this song for myself to resonate as one of living in the moment and not letting go of true love. So I personally get happy vibes from it. It is also my #1 favorite song ever.

They were both amazing bands. The best nirvana is the stuff not most people know. Smells like teen spirit is good, but definitely not the best like everyone feels

This song communicated something to my soul that I can't seem to describe from a young age. People don’t realize the depth of making music. It’s so much more than the end product. It’s the journey
You're absolutely right, Basically that is what Art in genereal is all about. It's the process. It's painful and it's beautiful. Sometimes incredibly hard, other times feels like you can walk on water. Worst part is. When you come to the end of the journey. You only get to enjoy it one time. Then you grow tired of it and start from the beginning on a new project. Good times.
But I imagine that especially with songs. You get to enjoy them multiple times because every performance is going to be a journey in itself.
sry for talking so much.
Music just doesn't have the same feel anymore. I remember just sitting in my room listening to music. The younger generation has so many distractions now. Internet, video games and cell phones. If only people could just listen, really listen there would be more appreciation for music.

This song will forever be a part of the soundtrack of my life. When it came out I was just out of high school. I was feeling very melancholy about drifting away from people that I used to see everyday. My life was changing and relationships were disintegrating. This song captured my feeling so perfectly and the sad feeling that I get to this very day when I hear it has not diminished one bit. It's one of my favorite songs. Not because I like feeling sad, but because it has the ability to make me feel the same way as when I heard it the first time. It takes me back to my friends bedroom when I saw the video on MTV. I can still see all of the details of that moment like they happened yesterday. There are songs that stick with you in life, and this song still hits hard. Thanks for this Dave.
I used to sing this to my son when he was a baby to help get him to sleep. Just love the tune so much. I played the Skin and Bones version for him when he was a little older and he remembered it. It's a moment we shared that I'll never forget.

I could happily listen to Dave G’s rock ‘n’ roll stories for hours on end. Somehow after hearing the back story, this rendition made me a little sad for 1996 Dave. What an epic rock monster it turned into, but the acoustic version is also something special in its own right.
I felt the same way. There were moments where i was just staring off into space trying not to be totally sad for 96 Dave. Hes one hell of a good man, but you can tell hes been through a lot of pain.
I know, it's like a permanent VH1 Storytellers program, he always has a nice story to tell
1996 Dave must've been a wreck. It's a miracle he managed to produce music at the time.
I am playing Everlong on the piano right now. I can read music and just started playing again after 20yrs of not having a piano. I was having so much trouble with the rhythm bc I have to play it so fast, and the way you described playing it on the drums and how you see it has tremendously helped me. I’ve never had a speech about music resonate so much in my soul. I cannot play a song unless I feel it in my bones. I have to be in the emotional mindset and play a song I love or you can’t hear it in my music or I’m bored with it. Music coming from raw emotion is the BEST MUSIC, and this is why Everlong is one of my favorite songs.
Proof that you don’t need to know what you’re doing as long as it feels right. Love you Dave thanks for all the music
Acoustics can rock too, Dave!
EDIT: Thank you, guys! Dave is a HUGE inspiration to me! From Nirvana to all the Foo material, his music has affected my playing, all my life. But, I get the feeling that Dave likes to tone down his own songs for acoustic, and that's what he means. Which, is not good or bad, it's just his preference. :D

Story time. Many years ago I had my first love. And I loved her with my whole heart. We dated for 2 1/2 years, and then she left me for another guy. It broke me so bad that I dropped out of college, left my job, burrowed head long into hard drugs, and eventually ended up homeless. I went to a rehab for nine months in St. Louis and recovered much of myself. At that rehab I met my current girlfriend, and I got an apartment up in St. Louis. It was there that one day I asked my girlfriend to come into my room and lay on my bed with me because I had found this song, and it meant a lot to me concerning my past with my ex. We laid there, and as the song played, I found myself breaking down and dripping with lots of tears. When the song ended, she looked over at me and said, “Ohmygod baby! Are you alright?” “Yes.” I choked out. “I really didn’t think it was going to hit me like that.” I had so much more to get out about what went down between me and her, and I knew that, but I didn’t think it was going to come out then. To everyone still hurting or still in love years after a past relationship, just know that I get it. It’s the deepest pain that I know. But we have to keep expelling it in whatever ways we know. Keep pushing to cope. “Being missed so dearly is the price of being loved so much.” “In the end. The only thing that matters. Is how much you loved.” “You were with them, and they were with you, and that’s what matters.” I’m finally about to send her a letter as a means of attempting greater closure. It has everything I wish I would have told her in it. Wish my heart the best please, and thank you for reading.
When we self medicate to help us through our most unbearable pains, the emotions all come out later when we've recovered. We eventually have to feel and work through that unbearable pain that we had buried with the help of drugs/alcohol at that time.
How'd it go with the letter, did she respond?
This hits so different after the passing of Taylor. I’m in love with Dave’s explanation of the history of this song, but as soon as Dave starts playing all I can hear is the deafening absence of Taylor drums, his raw energy, his fills, his emotion, the very heartbeat of this song. Thank you Taylor for everything that you gave. I’ve grown into my years listening to this band and I’m so thankful that I’ve lived in an age blessed with your talent. Rest now.
me too, after all the words there's only void..
You’re so right. Gah, RIP Taylor :(
what does himicahi mean?
Yeah, I hear the lyrics talking to Taylor and about the band. "If anything could ever be this real forever. If anything could ever be this good again." And then she sang and there are no words. As if only Dave can hear his voice... I'm so sad he died and I don't usually feel that way about people I don't know IRL.

One of my top 3 favorite songs of all times. Hearing it acoustically with his explanation of the meaning of this song just made it that much more beautiful and special to me love❤
Hearing Dave's narrative was incredibly enlightening. I've been playing guitar since I was 17 and I never had lessons. Someone tells you to play a B-minor and I'm like, "uhhh." It always made me feel like I didn't belong here holding this instrument, that I wasn't a real musician, and that I was just pretending. However, when Dave Grohl says he can't read music... no one is challenging that he is a great musician. I'm 31 now and I've learned over many years that music doesn't have to be played skillfully to reach people. In a way, it means so much more knowing that any of us can do this without the need for years of music theory or lessons. As Dave himself said, "that's the great thing about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they'll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons." I've been playing for 14 years now and I still feel like I'm not qualified to play for people... maybe I'll finally start.
Well said.
Play on, Josh! You ARE a musician. It’s in your heart, not your brain.
