- Headlight PPF install - A Step By Step PPF Tutorial (For Beginners!) Let's go over the Paint Protection Film installation process on headlights. Headlight PPF will protect you headlights from road damage and sun damage over time. This will keep your headlights is the best shape and keep them from turning yellow (or looking frosted) and getting chipped up over time.

Paint Protection Film material - The material (PPF) used in this video is NexGen by PremiumShield, which is now owned by Eastman. The material itself is going away at the end of 2022. So, we'll be switching over to an Eastman brand or be on the hunt for a new brand.
Pattern (kit) installed on this bumper - The software used to cut this kit is CORE by Eastman.

My name is Brent and I have been an automotive window tinter since 1998 and have been installing paint protection film since 2004. In 1998 I took a 5 day class to learn the basics of window tinting. Then I started tinting cars and learning as I went. In 2004 I bought a roll of paint protection film (clear bra by 3m) and taught myself how to install it. I finally found my new niche in ppf these last 6months I have been installing bumpers, bulk hoods, bulk doors etc….and I appreciate seeing your work on these video. Builds my confidence especially when I guess your next maneuver

@@EncorePPFtint been installing commercial graphics for 5 years and there was an opportunity to add Ppf to some of these vehicles. I didn’t expect to learn it so fast, I’m self taught in the installation, besides watching some Ppf mixture solution videos for tack and slip etc….I would have guessed back then window tint was more similar because of the wet apply but I realized wrapping film is more similar because the Ppf stretches unlike window tint film.
True, it was definitely different than the tinting but it fit with our tint customer base well really well. Back then not even one customer knew what it was, we had to really sell it.

@@EncorePPFtint ya I can only imagine back then before 60 inch was even available. Bet that’s why they call it clear bra lol now it must be a breeze for you now that cars are less complicated in design for the most part.
Ya commercial graphics is vehicle wraps. I do fleets. I also do color change for personal vehicles here and there.

Is it easier to do this with the headlamps (or the lenses, at least) OFF the car?
About to put some Aliexpress specials on mine, and want to UV protect them right from the off😀
No. The problem with removing the headlights is that they move around when you are stretching the PPF and squeegeeing it into place. Having the headlights attached to the vehicle keeps them stationary and that is a huge help. From time to time a customer drops off new headlight off the vehicle and I really hate working on them that way. Normally we'll have them install them and then we'll put the PPF on.

Does the heat gun after spraying with alcohol not cause the spider cracks in the plastic ?? I’ve had a couple instances where using a little bit of heat after cleaning with ISO caused spider cracks in the lens. Can’t seem to figure out the problem.
I have not had that happen. My wife did damage her headlight the other day while cleaning it so I could install PPF. She used 3M adhesive remover. It put the spider cracks in the headlight like you are talking about. That was the first time I've every seen that happen. The things that I am doing in this video will not cause that problem.

Thank you for your comment! What soap are you using? With the soap we use it's 7ml per gallon of water. The soap we use is (was) sold by PremiumShield and is no longer available (since they were purchased by Eastman), but we still have a lot of it on hand. On point solutions are so important to the easy of the install process.
We use RO (reverse osmosis) water from an APEC filtration system we installed under our sink. I'll add a link to the system in the description.
Great call on the hot DI water! Hot (in our case, R.O.) water is always in one of my bottles and I think it's underutilized in our industry.
My third bottle is Isopropyl Alcohol (71%) and water, diluted down to 10% Alcohol to 90% water.
@Encore Window Tinting and Paint Protection Film thanks for your reply, I'm using J&J baby shampoo, are guys also use gel? how's your mesuarements for gel?, I went to the Autofilmmastery PPF training it was a good , I'm currently using Core software, any other software that you have tried?
I used J&J for a long time. At some point, I felt like they changed something in it, so I moved on. All of these years and I've never tried Gel. My concern was it getting on the floor and not drying up completely. I'm not sure if that's even an issue. As far as software goes, I've used quite a few over the years. The only reason I started using CORE was that they purchased PremiumShield. Their patterns aren't as good as PremiumShield, but now they own the patterns and how to create them. That's a huge upgrade for CORE. CORE needs some work when it comes to window tinting patterns. We're going to test DigiCut starting this spring. I met some of the DigiCut team at S.E.M.A. last year.
Can you ceramic coat over the ppf?
Yes, you can apply ceramic coating over PPF. 👍🏻

What is the "pre-spray" and what are you using for a squeegee
The pre-spray is called "slip solution". The soap in our slip solution is "seventh generation" dish soap (found at most stores). We add 5-8 ml of that soap to each gallon of water. The squeegee is a bit wide for me, so I cut about an inch off one side of it. 👍

I heard that PPF isnt good on Porsche headlights because it will damage the coating when the film is removed. I also read thst PPF can cause micro cracks on the headlights. I have a 2024 Lexus RX 350, do you see any issues with PPF? I might put either Xpel or 3M
That is true, but I think it's worth the risk. The problem with Porsche headlights is that the PPF might pull the clear coat off when you remove the PPF. If this happens you can sand and buff the headlights back out and then reinstall PPF over them. Never having PPF on them is an option but the road debris and bugs are going to damage the head light anyway. And in a way that there is no fixing them. I always inform Porsche customers and let them choose. This also happened on my Buick Enclave, 12 years after the initial PPF installation. I just reinstalled PPF and the headlights still look new. With all of this being said, it's rare that the clear coat pulls off.
I would protect your Lexus head lights, no questions asked. Other than the Porsche and my older Buick, I have not pulled clear of other headlights.

What's the point of putting ppf on headlights? There is paint to protect, and the scuffs on the plastic can be polished if it happens.
We protected the paint as well. Just like the paint, headlights take a ton of damage from rocks and the sun (turns them yellow and frosted). It's best if you never have to refinish headlights. With PPF, you won't need to. Polishing removes the clear coat from the headlight that is protecting the plastic. At that point, the headlights will frost and turn yellow within a month or two. We refinish headlight all the time. The final step is putting PPF over them so they don't go bad again. 👍🏻😁 One of my cars is a 2008, and I've replaced the PPF on my headlights once. To this day, they look brand new!
@@EncorePPFtint Thanks for the explanation. Makes total sense. It just I've never seen any issues on my cars. I currently have a 2015 golf with 80k and the headlights still look like new w/o any ppf. However the hood and the bumper took a quite a beating from the road debris and small rocks. So I definitely very interested in installing PPF on my new car to protect the front.
My guess, it depends where the car spends most of the time - on a scorching sun or in the garage. I'm a bit concerned about ppf or the layer of glue could bond with headlight plastic and make it less clear over time. Or it would not be possible to remove/replace PPF w/o damaging headlight protective layer.
The PPF is removable. It's very rare that the clear coat on the headlight gets damaged during removal. Next time you're done washing your car, rub your hand over the plastic headlight. There will definitely be plenty of pits from the rocks. They take the hit better than paint. Plus, because you are looking through the plastic into the headlight, they aren't as visible. PPF will definitely stop those chips on your new car. It definitely does it's job. 👍🏻 Another thing is that your headlights are very vertical. Tesla headlights are much more horizontal and thus will get a ton more sun exposure. 🌞
Unless the PPF goes bad, clarity won't be an issue. 👍🏻😁
@@ivanobulo you’re lucky, I’ve seen cars with hazy yellowing @ 50,000 miles. Yes you can sand and polish them to make it look brand new, but PPF keeps them looking new without having to put in that work
