Restored my headlights a couple weeks ago (3M Kit) looking for a long term solution to rock chips this is it! You can also ceramic coat the ppf for best results 👍🏽
I still think you should not trim the film with that much excess because even though you think you tucked them below nicely that still isn't the proper adhesion. So it is better to cut where you know the film is gonna be stretched and held firmly so it doesn't peel of with time and introduce the filth below it over time ...
Thursday, March 6, 2023 It seems it would be easier to cut the film with the headlights removed. I have a Toyota Corolla, and it is easy to remove the headlights. 🚙 Thank you much for making the video! 😀 I know a project takes way longer when you are filming each step. And you have one sharp looking BMW!
Never done anything like this, but from watching tinted window video, maybe you could have rougly position the film on head light, and trim rougly around to cut the excess. you'd have less ''wrinkle'' as you squeejee out the soapy solution
Few extra steps? Jack up car, remove fender liner, remove bumper, struggle with corroded bolts, etc. I'm just saying this because that's what it took on my 335. But I was replacing the lens. Just figured I'd protect them while I'm at it.
I tried to do this with my Nissan Stagea, but the headlights wrap around the side of the car and made it difficult to stretch the film. I think something that may help to do this better is to use painters tape and mask up the headlight, then trace an outline for the shape of the headlight onto the tape with a sharpie pen. Then remove it from the headlight and trace that shape onto the 3M headlight film and then you can cut an exact profile of the headlight onto the film. This should make it easier to stick on and you don't have to try cut it once it's on the headlight, which is tricky to get a nice clean line with. Just a thought?
Thank God I have a car whose headlights are easily removed! I couldn't imagine the aggravation it would cause me to attempt this with them on the car. Unfortunately I have to do this since one of the replacement lenses I bought started flaking it's clear coat less than a year after installing them and now I have to protect them before they start yellowing and them I become a slave to polishing them every 6-8 weeks. Thanks for sharing!
The film comes with 2 peelable flims, one that expose the adhesive side and one thin layer you can remove after applying the product, as i know because i applied these film twice on headlights
1. Can you link me to where you got your ppf? 2. I am worried if bought from Amazon they are not genuine. 3. How to remove it when they start to peel/bubble/fade? I heard using a steamer? 4. Thanks Edit If I am applying ppf to headlights, I will use paper to make a template and then place it on top of the ppf to cut it.
Quick tip: start on the flat surfaces with your tac points. Once your flat surfaces are secure you can then go to your curved glass and get that applied. Also use a lot less wrap in the future as a good controlled stretch of the fabric can go a long way…
Nice. Car looks devilish lol color is 🔥 I got the same 3m vivid kit for my e90, also new H/L’s. My first attempt was a fail. Probably would’ve been fine but I spotted a small bubble and used my heat gun to lift it and got too close! No worries tho I’ll order some more and go at it again.
Man tack the film in one corner stretch across and squege the water this headlight is so easy with the right technique it will be done in 10 min with the drying time without heat. I am almost 100% sure you have a lot glue lines in the film with this headdryier
In some videos they dont use water . I used water first time but in those curved sides it was horrible job so I removed that foil and ordered new . So is it better to use water or not ? When I use it its very important to blow all those drops out of the film so its harder .
Thanks for sharing! I don't have a pre-cut template for my headlights so this is the method I was planning to use to apply my paint protection film. Any ideas on how to get a cleaner edge when you trim?
One way to protect the car and also get a clean cut, is to use a squeegee just for cutting. It will take more time, but it will be worth it. Never use a razor on a car. If you cut the paint, it will cause peeling and then rust (if it's metal underneath) and definitely damage the car.
I didn't even know this was a thing. My headlights were turning black. I thought moisture was getting inside the lens or something. I bought new headlights just to suddenly realize there was film over them! The headlights themselves were good as new
Love your video man, I just installed ppf to my car about 2 months ago and I really like the result and the effect on my car, but I just wonder, can I do it also to my helmets? Is it possible? I need to minimize any scracthes on my helmets
Does this kind of film fade the headlight after a while? It means that my car has a white headlight, but when I turn it on, it looks a little yellow instead of the previous white. But when you look at it from the outside, it doesn't even look yellow. Are there any side effects by sticking these kinds of films? My vehicle is a brand new car
I never had that issue with this film on my headlights so far. I had this one for about year and then I got new lenses and redid the PPF film and it’s been another year since. So I can’t say for sure if it will yellow.
I just wrapped my headlights same as you using 3m clear film. But one of my older brother who works at a repair shop told me that my headlights' housings are gonna burned (overheaded) because of that 3m clear film since he had replaced some headlights' housings for his customers as the same problem 😱. Have you heard or experienced about that? I am wondering keep them there or take them off.
What bulbs were those? Led and HID bulbs don't produce as much heat as halogens. I have a 12 year old film on factory HIDs and halogen DRLs. Looks good as new.
the headlight after polishing has a damaged protective layer after polishing, so it is necessary to restore this protection by painting, sticking foil or at least applying a ceramic coating with resistance to UV radiation so that the protection does not degrade and the Plexiglas does not oxidize
I ended up redoing it because I got new lenses for the headlights but its been almost a year since then and they've held up just fine. Still looks exactly the same and has not peeled off or anything
People on here doing this always use flat rounded headlights try doing this stuff on a vehicle with a lot of accents on it. Dips n valleys bumps n hills
You would have been so much better of doing this before you put the headlights in ? This what I did with my e39 ,you get to wrap all the way round it ,reducing the risk of lift
It's nice to see somebody doing stuff for the first time, so you see how you would act , watching a pro isn't the same.
Ikr
Thank you for showing us how to do this without the pre-cut patterns. Much appreciated!
Yeah glad you found it helpful! Definitely didn't turn out the best since it was my first time but its really the protection that I cared about.

great video, thank you! I wish UA-cam had a "remove music" options, you'd think with AI, they could strip it out on demand

Thank you for sharing, about two years ago I renovated my lenses, wish I had added protectant.
Really the best way is to disconnect the headlight to wrap it around easier. Just a few extra steps but way easier putting back in fully intact.

Was my First time doing this bro. No way it was gonna be perfect lol
Hello there. What you use between ppf and headlight, soapy water or just water?
In some videos they dont use water . I used water first time but in those curved sides it was horrible job so I removed that foil and ordered new .
So is it better to use water or not ?
When I use it its very important to blow all those drops out of the film so its harder .
What kind of soap do you used for this work?
The stuff is a lot harder to cut than you think . And the contours suck. It’s probably pros insist on using templates 😆. Yours look great
Nah it was pretty difficult to cut cleanly lol
Thanks for sharing! I don't have a pre-cut template for my headlights so this is the method I was planning to use to apply my paint protection film. Any ideas on how to get a cleaner edge when you trim?
I think someone said to not have so much excess when you start cutting out the shape. You could check the other peoples comments for feedback

I’m pretty sure this could work for your helmets too. As long as it has a similar surface material that the PPF could stick too.

Nice car and nice video. What’s the song that comes on at 7:13?? 🔥
Hate when the headlights turn yellow from all the oxidation every 6 months after buffing the hell out of them, this is a good idea

I think they’ll help prevent it.
They do but you eventually have to re do it but it's better than buying new ones everytime they go Yellow

Yes its legal. Tinted film is not legal

How are they holding up? Still clear?
I ended getting new lenses and rewrapping them about a year ago but I never had any issues still.

Which type spray is that normal water or anything else
I used bottle of soap + water and another bottle of isopropyl alcohol 78% mixed with water
