My springs broke and were completely warped on my 2009 Impreza. Thomas helped me out with this video and his part. I now have working A/C again! And I no longer have to blow (hot) air into my car just to avoid a horrendous screeching noise coming from under the hood! Thanks, Thomas!
I have this exact same problem currently- terrible sound indeed. I hope I can find this spring online. Tom's spring is the only place I found to get this part so far. Fingers crossed the site is still up and running.
Thank You, this is exactly what's wrong with my Impreza. Happened today and will be using this video as a guide Update 7/6, Part arrived, installed. AC works again. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thank you for this, the dealer told my girlfriend it would be some stupid amount to fix and has been suffering through the 100F+ index in the US south for the last month without telling me. Just ordered 2 from your ebay. One for her car and one for mine when it eventually fails. You should add an ebay link on your website.
Great video, but grinding off the rivets and replacing just the spring seems a bit much. You can get a replacement clutch and spring, already assembled, for about 15 bucks on ebay. Saves a lot of hassle, and then all you need is a 10mm socket wrench. Easy peasy.
I know! But when I came up with this in 2013, tit was the only solution available on the market. So back then, it was really great. The 15$ solution on ebay is just a cheap copy of the OEM part. You can probably expect the same early life failure...
In 99% of the case you don't have to replace the bearing. I replaced my own spring and it lasted for years. There is a design flaw in the spring. This is probably why they modified the design in 2011.
I noticed when you were finally put it back together with the one part of the pressure plate wasn't even resurfaced you gotta always resurfaces what do you have a damaged clutch I found out the hard way so I figured I'd just let you know the next time you have to tear apart your clutch again it's always wise to resurface a pressure plate
I ordered a new clutch hub assembly, but don't know where the spacer and two washers go. My bolt, washers, and spacer are missing on my car so I have no reference. Can anyone help me please?
Just bought a 08 WRX in great condition except for the AC compressor. It’s only got 52k miles on it so do you think this is possibly the reason it doesn’t work?
I just got my 08 impreza 3 weeks ago the ac made a rattle noise when it was running but worked cine today it just stopped wont turn on at all tried swapping a relay but still nothing what do u think it is
what is the cause of the spring going out?? or is there a noise what happens when this is bad??? not much info here beside a good video of how to fix it.
Hello I have a 2011 sti sedan basic. I've been having problems with my ac compressor. When I turn on my ac the recirculation button starts flashing and my ac compressor turns off and turn on any tips or help I'd appreciate that.
These must be the thin shim washers. They must be installed between the compressor and the triangular flange. They are used to adjust the gap between the drive plate and the compressor. Re-intall them when you will install the new spring. My procedure states to re-move the drive plate but to re-install the flange to avoid loosing these thin washers. Sometimes they stay on the compresor and could fall while driving wihtout the flange installed.
Where did you buy those pieces from please let me know I have same exact problem but dealer telling me they only sell the compressor together it's like $1000 and my mechanic said he can do this if he has the replacement parts
John Faulkner Yes it should work on a 09 impreza. Just double check the compressor model number. This is not the clutch that shifts the gears. It is the clutch on the AC compressor.
Is this the same for the 03 WRX? I check the fuse, relay for continuity and even swapped relaya and I'm thinking mine is bad too. How can you tell your compressor clutch was bad? I tried to move mine and it feels like it's partially grabbing. Is there a clutch that you can buy fully built? I don't have a vice..... :(
I recommend to put the flange back on without the spring to avoid loosing the washers that are on the shaft. pages.videotron.com/atcaron/Instructions.html
I fixed it i just left the car off and turned a/c on and blower on then used a a/c recharge kit on it for maybe a minute then started the car the a/c kicked on and i finished recharging
In the meantime, you can remove the drive plate to prevent any further damage: •Remove the screw in the center of the compressor. •Remove the flange (triangle part) and drive plate. •Remove the 6 rivets securing the spring to the flange and drive plate. (see installation instructions for details) •Save the drive plate for later and re-install the flange and screw without the drive plate. This is to avoid losing the shim washers that are between the compressor shaft flange and the compressor. At this step, you can also verify that the compressor is not seized. You should be able to rotate the flange by hand. You will have to remove the flange again to install the spring and drive plate when you get the spring replacement kit.
mine just went out.. can i buy a reman. compressor take off the clutch and install it on my existing compressor? .. also can i drive on a broken ac clutch? seem that if i dont use the ac the rattle is louder, and when i do use the ac it much quieter
hey, is there any other way to get the clutch out if using a channel lock doesnt work? I think mines is rusted in. Pretty hard to pull out without damaging my clutch
This part doesn't fit on a 2013, because the clutch is slightly bigger in diameter and is supposed to be more robust. Do you have a broken spring on a 2013? Can you share a picture? I already made a version for the 2013 model but I don't have any left in stock.

great video, fix this issue ASAP! it makes quite the spark show under driving speeds
Many thanks for the video and the page link to the spring... AC back up and working!!!!
Exactly what happened to mine yesterday. Thank you for the instructions!
Great video, Exactly my problem today and an easy fix. Thanks for posting
Do MY08+ model years not use shims on the shaft? I was hoping to just remove the clutch and take one or two shims off.
How would you know if the spring would have to be changed? I have a 2002 Legacy and I have to smack my clutch in order for it to run lol....
You can visually see that the spring is broken. Here are some examples: pages.videotron.com/atcaron/cemetery.html

@@atcaron Thanks for your great video anyway. Good job.
Do you also need to replace the bearing inside the A/C compressor? This part breaks typically for a reason...
In 99% of the case you don't have to replace the bearing. I replaced my own spring and it lasted for years. There is a design flaw in the spring. This is probably why they modified the design in 2011.

I was told my ac pump is on the way out it making a sqealling noise and it sounds worse when i put my foot down more.
I ordered a new clutch hub assembly, but don't know where the spacer and two washers go. My bolt, washers, and spacer are missing on my car so I have no reference. Can anyone help me please?
Thanks for the post! Do you recall where you bought the toms spring & rivet kit?

Most likely yes, but just open the hood and have a look. It's easy to tell...
What are the signs that it is the clutch and not something else? Appreciate the help very much.
@@tannerslomko The springs will be broken...
Thomas Caron thank you
I just got my 08 impreza 3 weeks ago the ac made a rattle noise when it was running but worked cine today it just stopped wont turn on at all tried swapping a relay but still nothing what do u think it is
Eric Bostick Sorry, I can't help
Thomas Caron make sure you have enough refrigerant. if your refrigerant level is too low a switch turns off the compressor to protect it.
what is the cause of the spring going out?? or is there a noise what happens when this is bad??? not much info here beside a good video of how to fix it.
When the spring is broken, it is obvious. Huge rattle noise, loose drive plate and missing part of the srping. If it was borken, you would know...
rust or corrosion
where did you bu the clutch?

Already took it off as I was taking it off three thin rings fell of about an inch long do you know what dose are

hey i have this exact same problem, but the design of the spring has changed on the website..will this new design still work with a 2009 sti?
Hisham Shaideen yes it will work on a 2009. It is just an improved version but still for the same model and years.
Thank you! Going to order one later on..
Can this work on a 09 impreza sport and not to be mistaken is this the actual clutch that shift the gears or is it something else????

Daniel Johnson You can't buy a replacement clutch. This is why this part was made. Have a look at the website.pages.videotron.com/atcaron
@@atcaron in 2023 you can buy replacement clutch
where is the low pressure line on 2007 impreza 2.5I? I need to recharge ac.
It's around the back on the left side near the wall.
