@@ExpeditionHomesteadlove your videos very informative. Through trial and era I was finally able to get my willow cuttings to transfer over to bonsai soil out of water. At what point should I add fertilizer and what brand should I utilize?
I usually just pop 5 inch thick, 10 ft tall willow poles(freshly cut branches) in the ground and use them and use them as perimeter fencing poles, they always root so far, i’ve done over 300. I pollard the willows afterwards, i get very durable living fencing poles that way 😁
When I was a kid we used to cut willow trees and use them as fence posts (3” in diameter). It was no uncommon for the fence posts to root and start to grow!
I took an almost two inch thick, 2.5 ft long cutting, and it is flourishing right now. Took the cuttings March 10th.i can email you pics if you want. I just put the branch in water 4 gallon bucket ,to root it.
Hey, I rooted a lot of big 12 foot willows stumps and planted them last summer. It’s to make a willow walled in hut. They all rooted very well so I’ll let you know how they got on.

I also planted them in an area where they were surrounded by trees, which I’m guessing isn’t good since they’re competing for water. Also I would make sure they get enough sun. This might have been another reason why some died. Also don’t bunch then together in one spot as in right next to each other. Give them a little space between each other.

Last summer I pollarded a willow and used the branches to make a runner bean stick frame. The sticks were up to 2 inches thick and about 9ft long. After a few weeks some of them started producing buds. I knocked them off as I didn't want the sticks to take root and grow - just provide a frame for my beans. I have some that about 2.5 feet long hardwood, qll the way down to 1-foot wisps., from January.. I did lose 3 from freezing About a month ago. but I have 6 pots, 1 is a 3 tree and 1 is a 5 tree. The other 3 are single. Actually, 1 is from a cutting I cut from cuttings back in January. lol they are all going to be bonsai'd. 2 of them have a plastic butter lid in the dirt to help with radial roots. left a like
You can root willow cuttings/logs 6-8 inches in diameter if not bigger. Iv taken logs in large diameter and started a new in ground tree. Willow is a natural rooting hormone.
I dropped an almost 12” chunk of a willow that had to be cut down into a small hole and it rooted and started to grow. Not sure how it will do long term but it wants to survive.
Hello, I have a fabulous weeping willow tree that I would love to take cuttings from. I live in upstate NY zone 5b. I have 3 questions-Can I take my cuttings in the fall and bring them indoors so they can be planted in the spring? If yes, once rooted in the water when should I put them into pots or should I leave them rooting in water and put them directly in the ground this spring? Thank you for your response
I’ve grown cuttings that are 4 feet long. In 2 years my cuttings from 4’ have grown to over 14’ in height. Also regarding roots damaging foundations or pipes, that is a myth. The only reason roots end up inside foundations or pipes, the damage/cracks were already there. Roots tend to find these weak points and end up taking advantage of easy access to water thru these cracks.
WAAA, WAAA, WAAA. A bunch of babies. 3 days of "nothing but rain." Here in ARIZONA, we haven't even had 3 inches of rain this year...and it is OCTOBER 18TH! Normally we get 10 - 12 inches a year. So much for that. lol Love the vids, thank you.
At least they can see the ground...I live in Alaska and have 13 inches off snow sitting on top of three inches of ice. And there's 10 inches forecast for tonight-tomorrow.

I plant this willow next to my house 10 feets away and the root is not so invasive.they way is.. water them right on the root daily..so the root not grow everywhere looking for water...no surface appear roots till date after 8 years
What about really thin cuttings? I collected up some windfalls yesterday, (Salix Alba, white willow), only about the size of the lead in a pencil, I've put them in water and hope they will take, I want to grow a hedge with them
@@melindafree7170 leaving them in water, and changing it regularly worked. Lots of roots grew in the water, but when I planted them in some tubs and pots, some took and some didn't.
If you keep it small enough and it is permitted by your city. Some cities require the tree to be registered and planted strategically in order to minimize and risk of damage from the tree roots when it matures
if i buy willow cuttings from a nursery end of november am i best planting them straight away or pre soaking them ? will be planting through a membrane ?
Funny how different it is where you come from Here they say take willow branch of 3 Meters and put in 1 meter in the ground😂 And not many info over taking small branched and put them in the water to make them shoot roots and then put it in the ground
Have you tried taking cuttings from Bebb's willow (S. bebbiana)? (It is the willow used for diamond willow walking sticks.) I'm told that S. caprea (commonly used for pussy willow- not a native of the US) and S humulis (prairie willow) are also very difficult to root from cuttings. Any experience with these willows?

I rooted a limb lost in a storm from a corkscrew that was as big as my arm, no joke. We just stuck it in the dirt and kept it watered.

I had a poplar stake I had sharpened and pounded into the ground and had grew leaves.

I love Weeping Willow Trees. I am growing 7 from a small branch. 2 of them appear to be turning brown on the branch on the top. Is that a good thing??

How big will these clippings be in the end? Will they turn into a full sized tree if you let them?
Do you ever just stick them in the ground after cutting? I have seen people do that and it works for them.
Yes, that normally works out fine if you have a spot you can keep watered

Typically I like to take cuttings off of growth that is over 1 year old.

I took a huge 5 foot branch and shoved it in the ground. The next year it turned into a tree.
I did the same, right next to a litte brook. 25 yrs later, the new owner of that house cut down a 40 - 50 ft tall willow tree.
