    I am so glad I ran across your video! My dappled willow is several years old and not near as tall and busy as yours were; however, it was just growing in a wonky "tree like" fashion and did not resemble a bush. I think I will do like you did in March and basically cut it down pretty much to the ground and start over! I'm glad I was able to see what you did and give it a second chance at new life! I was beginning to think I would just dig it up and plant another one. Here's hoping it will look different next year! Thank you for making this video and sharing the information!

    • @GardenSanity

      You're welcome Candy! Cutting ours down and starting over was the best decision! The difficult thing about digging up Dappled Willow after several years, is that the roots will be quite a job to remove -- it's amazing how fast they are growing underground! I think you'll also enjoy a wonderful result if you coppice them. The hard part is just being patient until next year! But you can prune them a bit here and there in the meantime to help you not feel like they are so wonky -- which is a great term for how they can end up looking over time! 😁 Please keep me posted, ok?

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  Рік тому

      Hi Chalae -- Yes, you're exactly right: If you prune them every year, then they won't get out of control like mine did.👍 I thought letting them grow huge was great -- and it can be -- but I also didn't do anything to control them either. That's how I ended up with large "trunks" that were growing sideways and no growth on the inside of the shrubs, etc. As long as you prune them once a season, you'll be fine. And I've got videos for proper pruning as well in my Dappled Willow Playlist! I hope they help, and please keep me posted as I like to hear updates! 😀

    I love your videos - subscribing to your channel! Came across one of your Dappled Willow videos just while searching what they look like in the first place. (I had a guy from the nursery come to look at some places that need new plantings and I jotted down all of his suggestions to look up later.) If you don't have a big space for a wall of dappled willows, would planting one (in the middle of 2 other shrubs but there is space for it to grow) fill in the space? I have 8 ft between other plants in one spot or if I put them in another place, I could plant 2 within the 15 ft space. I don't want them to get too crazy and tall though. Can they be kept to about the height of your fence? Also, I get full sun? Would they hold up? Thanks!

    I am concerned the dappled willow roots will grow into my house foundation. I am thinking to dig them up and relocate them. Have you ever experienced their roots causing an issue on your property? I originally bought these at a plant to line against my home. Pretty, large, and affordable.

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  3 місяці тому

      I have not personally had that happen because ours are purposely planted far away from our house foundation. I have heard of willows - in general - causing problems with house foundation and sidewalks, underground pipes. And I've heard a few cases of Dappled Willow roots causing issues. So, to be on the safe side, I'd suggest relocating them. I know it's a pain to do so. Years ago we had our original Dappled Willow shrub planted in our front yard too close to the house. When we moved it after just two years, it already had large roots underground. I hope this helps, but I'm sorry you'll have to relocate them because it is some hard work digging. 💚🌿

    I have a few stems turning brown. Should I trim them off and put need oil on them. The leaves on these stems turned brown and the stems don’t look or feel,dead. I am worried about fungus we have had so much rain.

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  Рік тому

      Hi Brenda -- I would definitely spray the shrub with Neem Oil -- always a safe idea! As for the brown stems, I would gently trim them off. And what I mean by that is don't do any severe pruning at this time. (See my Dying Dappled Willow video for my own mistake in doing this last Summer.) Try pruning just the "ends" of those brown stems...without taking out the entire stem. Wait a few days and see how the shrub is responding. Then take off more, and so on. Not sure what zone you're in, but if you're experiencing the horrible heat waves, you want to trim only the dead stuff off. 👍As for too much rain -- Dappled Willow love water, so there's probably not going to be fungus from too much rain -- just happier plants! So I'm hoping that you have some leaves that turned brown but it won't affect the entire shrub. 🤞Please keep me posted!

    I planted some dappled willow along with some ivory halo dogwoods along the sides of my yard for privacy. all have done really well and grew a good amount, But I noticed as they grew a lot of the new growth was less variegated, what would have caused this? or is this normal?

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Andrew, the combo of the ivory halo dogwoods and dappled willow sounds really nice! Dappled Willow can begin pushing out green leaves sometimes, especially on older shrubs. The best thing to do is - if just a few stems - remove them. However, as you may have seen in my video above, most of my stems appear with green leaves right now. I’m hoping next Spring when I prune that the new growth will become the wonderful variegated color. Have you pruned yours recently? Before when we let ours grow and grow, without a good pruning, ours began reverting to the green color. My suggestion for you - if you don’t normally do so - is to give them a good pruning next Spring. Does this help? 🌱

    Strange about the brown one. I had a rhododendron like that which went from perfectly healthy to near death seemingly overnight. Who knows? I’m not sure if I like my DW. I constantly prune it as I can’t stand to have scraggly plants next to the house. I’m not ready to take the chainsaw to it for fear of a huge hole in the landscaping.

      Totally agree with you about scraggly plants! This Summer was a study in restraint for me, as I wanted to let the Dappled Willow rebound. I’m looking forward - as in can’t wait - to prune and shape them next Spring. For yours, you could take them down with a chainsaw but leave about 2 feet or even 3 feet. They rapidly sprout new buds so it wouldn’t leave a landscape hole. How tall are yours?

Probably just above the 6 foot white fence. (Totally agree about needing a ladder which isn’t fun…or safe.) For the bunny land area (🤣) how about planting some DW cuttings? • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  3 роки тому +2

      To learn about their growing requirements, check our the free guide I linked to in the Description area above. 🌱 Dappled Willow grows fairly large, so the first consideration is what size you will want them to be. For example, if you plan to keep them trimmed and pruned, then having them about 4 or 5 feet from a sidewalk or road would be fine. However, the key is you would be trimming them back a lot to prevent them from growing into the sidewalk space or the road - especially if cars are driving on the road and people are using the sidewalk.
      The better option is to site them well away from the road and sidewalk, so you avoid the worry of them growing into those areas. Without seeing the location, I think planting them on the hill approximately 6 or 8 feet away from the road and sidewalk would be better. And space them 6 feet apart. They will grow into each other nicely at that distance. You could put decorative rocks along the road or sidewalk to help delineate the space, and mulch underneath the shrubs. Or like me, add rock around the shrubs too. Remember, these love water. Make sure especially while they are young that they get enough water. I hope this helps? 🌱
