willow is so full of natural rooting hormone it will grow anywhere. I have made cuttings from branches of up to 10 cm in diameter, if you cut a piece off and plant it will grow, if you chop it up into small pieces and make a willow tea, put it in the water of your other cuttings it will increase the rooting hormone to encourage your other plants to root. amazing trees! I use my willows around the garden for fences, trellis, supports for climbers, and basketry.
I was watching a video on UA-cam of people using a ' chipper shredder ' to mulch up an existing Willow Tree , they did a follow up video on the mulch which had sprouted . Willow is basically harder to kill than cactus . So long as it stays wet it will regrow .

I love trees and plants!! Just want you to beware of Willow trees so close to your house or pipelines have to be very careful to not plant it near any sewer pipes running through your yard or neighbors yard they have very invasive, shallow roots 100 feet long. The roots look for water and will grow till they find water so they can keep a constant sipping action.
Is this less of a problem on riverbanks because the water is there? we have some erosion problems but want to keep the riverbank using native plants and not the invasive ways our neighbours have. No houses close regardless and no pipes down on the bank either. Thanks and hope you are well!

A willow tree blew down in a storm, my neibor just propped it back up and it rooted it self back into the ground. Its still their today. It like died back a ton at the beginning but the next year half the tree had growth and the next year it was back to normal.

Fyi this works on large stump cuts also. Rooted 8 weeping willow trunks all over 5 inches in diameter last summer. From 2.5 to 6 feet long.

@@Leyenda1 Well, they all propagated perfectly. I had hundreds of them. Then we had a record breaking heat wave that took every single one out. My entire collection was fried. The last one standing was one that I popped into a water vase of bamboo to hold it up and it rooted like crazy. (Very cool process to watch) it'd probably still be alive if I hadn't re-potted it and took it out to be with the rest of them. I'm moving this week. It's my last chance to try, even though it's winter. I need to take at least one with me.

I just put them in water till they got a great big ball of roots on the bottom then took them out to the field planet them and never touch them again and they’re doing fine. They went through a Canadian winter.

Nice, I got mine from CZ too. When i potted mine up I put 4 to a pot, just transplanted into their new home and they weren't any worse for the wear. They are at the edge of a wetland and they have exploded!

i love willow. made my first basket and hurdle this year, basket is very handy to have! you could put a plastic bottle over the cutting to help keep humidity up while they root..

I moved into my house four years ago and the previous owner had the brilliant idea to plant a weeping willow within a foot of the house foundation in the front yard. The tree was at least 30 years old. Had it removed this year to avoid roots destroying everything, including my water lines

I grew a Golden Weeping Willow from a cutting 2 years ago it is now 8' tall in a huge 30 gallon nursery pot. I will likely plant it by my local creek later this Spring. You are right the Salix purpurea is famous for basket weaving. I have a variety called Dwarf Blue Arctic Willow that is a purpurea and it only matures to 4' tall and wide and has silvery blue foliage. Just propagated about a dozen of them from a bush. Lots of fun growing Willows! Thanks for the informative video! 🌿

You should double-check that they are not invasive in your area - invasive plants can cause huge issues with other native flora and fauna which is why they are sometimes destroyed. So check it out before you save them :)!

I just bought cuttings from cz grain. They are my first attempt at growing trees. Pleased to say they have only been in water for about 2 days and have multiple roots. So yes, cz grain is a good source!

Hi. I have a 1.5 inch diameter by 18 inch long cork screw willow branch that I have propagated in a pot in soil this summer. It has has a great root system. It's about to be winter here in Georgia. Should I put them in the ground now? They are currently in pots. They have many long branches that have grow over the summer.

This is my third time on the little willows. Last ones I got in winter. These I'm trying in spring. I put them in water and outside just now but I will take them back inside of the listening to you I'll keep them here for a couple of weeks. In the past one of them I put in my aquarium and it did quite well and the fish like to rest on it but when I took it out it did not do well. You speaking with a lot of love for the trees so I'm taking them back inside in water. Also. I have a small bonsai that was spelling on me and I brought it to the grower he said they needed some air space underneath the pot and since I did that it's doing quite well. I wondered if this would be true for these little trees as well?

Please let me share a correction I have for you about watering willow cuttings. I recently had 18 Willow cuttings from CZ grain all turn black on certain parts and then slowly wither to death. I could not figure out what went wrong but after using Open AI’s Chat GPT I got this answer which explains that I could have overwatered them:

Now, I used a mycorrhiza inoculant as well and I have to wonder if this particular product does not work with Willow Cuttings, even though the package says it is good for cuttings.
Last possibility, the enemy of God killed them. Yes, as a Christian I believe that our creator has enemies, they are hidden from man, God called them, “the slanderer,” or, “the adversary” in The Bible and they hate righteous people like us who love the things that God made, such as trees.
I want to grow hundreds of thousand of Willow trees, they are so glorious. Satan is against me for this, and God says He is proving believers with adversity the way gold is proven with fire, so I think it’s possible my cuttings all died because of this. Only 2 survived and they aren’t looking so good. It is interesting to me though how just those 2 survived.

I took some cutting and they did good (had branches and leaves )until I potted it it began to wilt and is dying …. Any thought on what I can do different I used bonsai soil btw
I have two questions. So one of the cuttings developed roots (2-3 pinky finger sized ones) and transplanted them though its not producing the leaves is it normal? Secondly, the temperature is around 16-20 C should I keep them outside? As a final question, I have LED lights for plants, would it help it to place it next to it so that it enhances growth? Thanks

so thrilled to have found this! thank you so much! I feel I may have screwed up. I have 6 tri-dappled willow bushes that I just trimmed way down and wanted to propagate them for another site by my house. I didn't realize i had to do this in spring or fall, as of course it is august here in North Carolina. Do you think they will still root in the water buckets I put them in? I now know from watching your video on how to clip them off around the nodes!
I think they will root just fine but just need to establish in soil before they are exposed to any extreme cold

A point about overwatering. They get blighted, but the blight will almost never kill the plant. They can literally grow in a dirty bucket. Eventually they will need nutrients. You can keep these in a bucket from fall to spring.
I looked for that link to the Etsy store where you got your basket weaving slips but couldn’t see it in the write up on this video.
Another pot you could use for your willow slips is the self-watering ones, most have a deep reservoir for any water to collect.
my cuttings are doing great after about a month. green shoots of 4 to 8 " already what do I do now? Do I just let them continue to grow? Trim them to start training as bonsai?
I have never had a bonsai tree but, I just won one on Deal Dash Lol. It came from CZ Grain. I’m excited to learn more about them. Question, so if I plant in the ground, it will grow into a large tree but, if I plant in a pot, will it stay small? Do I eventually need to plant in the ground? I ask because, I don’t have my own house and yard so, I would be keeping it inside.
I planted a dozen or so in solo cups, they all have roots etc. Would you suggest putting holes in the bottom of the cups so the water can run out or for 2 weeks or would having standing water just be fine? I started them all in water. Just looking for your opinion on the solo cups. I have a bunch in other pots that have holes, so those I'm not worried about. I know you said you can't OVER water, but just want to make sure the solo cups with no holes
Root on all are from half inch to 1.5 inches with good green buds and tiny leaves.

I have some willows that have been doing great that were rooted right before spring. They grew beautifully after planting into larger pots and started growing new leaves and buds everywhere. However, within the last week or 2, the tops that were initially cut started to get shriveled and dry. Is it whats called "die back"? I am still so new to this and im pretty worried. Some of the leaves on them have started to brown and die as well. I do have some willows in a completely separate set up with no cross contamination as i have made sure to be very careful with no matter if plants seem healthy or not. Anyway, those willows also started to have leaves die but have this weird issue where there are sections of the branches turning completely black and then dying. It was only at the tips and i was told to prune those off, sanitize tools and hands and use antifungal etc. But then the black started popping up in random places of the branches. Is this canker? Every single site, blog, channel ive gone to has no info for my specific issue.
I live in GA. I have 2 willow trees that did fantastic last year and I noticed the bark on the base is starting to split and some branches were dying. How can I prevent these from dying?

I’m in southern Indiana and we still get some below freezing temps over night during spring. I have the cuttings indoor in pots with soil now after a few weeks in water. Will the temps kill the young cuttings if I planted them outside now? Not sure how resistant they’ll be to the temps if they drop below freezing in early spring. Thanks for the video!

I’ve noticed that some of my cuttings in water have leaves that are growing downwards meaning that I put the shoots in the wrong way. Are these no longer good or can I turn the shoot still?

They are still good just turn them right side up!!
deffinitelly gonna make a kabudachi style bonsai out of these. seems like the cheapest and fastest pethod since theyre already gonna have some thickness right from the start

It's worth the try! They need to stay watered very well during the first two months after planting.

With willow, you don't have to worry about the node. I just do the old cut and jam. I cut and jam it into the soil.
I live on a swamp with 4 big willow trees. 2 curly, and 2 idk what kind.
This year, I am planting a fence. I tried last year and they lived all summer, but got blighted late summer. I suspect that it is the same fungus that causes "Diamond willow" which is a disease that rots a sort of diamond pattern into the willow over time, but can't usually kill it. It's good if you want to make willow staves.
You can also use other, very large willow logs and, from my experience, they root even better, which I think is because there is more opporotunity all up and down massive trunk to root properly. Of course, you need a posthole digger.
