To be slightly pedantic, the “trend of Anime switching out its theme song” isn’t something that started in the 90’ really, it’s _always_ been there. Obviously not without exceptions and around the 90’ it did become more common (And by the 2000’ it was almost a standard), but even as early as Urusei Yatsura in the 80’ the opening got swapped out every so often and the ending theme even more so. Toei was basically the last big holdout for rarely doing that, and even then Sailor Moon did at least swap out the ED at least once per season.

    • @richborn6700

    • @iug5672
      @iug5672 6 місяців тому +8

I think the point is that it switched more often, too often.
Urusei Yatsura changed its theme song for the first time on episode 77, DBZ changed it on episode 195.
While GT has less than 70 eps, 2 intros and 4 ending songs.
I don't think it's a bad thing per say, I like having a lot of openings to choose from. But there is def a trend where animes get new openings way more often nowadays.

The premise for Super 17 is bonkers
Not even gonna try and cap about that
One of the things I have slowly come around to though is the statement about a complete 17 being stronger than Cell.
Seems to me that Gero went, “oh shit, I can’t control this kid, let me stop making him stronger and make something else entirely instead” and only then started working on a brand new idea that eventually came to be Cell. After all, as you mentioned, Gero had years to work on the Artificial Humans so I expect some trial and error.
But then the issue I can’t wrap my head around is… what was 18 there for then? Was she also supposed to be stronger?
GT gives a kinda sorta maybe but maybe not answer to this because the mind-controlled 17 tries to take 18 too which implies maybe Gero and Mu did have long term plans for her but nothing ever comes from this.
Glad you mentioned the DB’s causing this whole hell debacle though. Personally in my interpretation, I figured that Gero and Mu were taking advantage of a situation they didn’t themselves fully understand outside of “huh, the barrier is pretty weak this time of year, maybe we can use that” and that it was all serendipitous. Again, that’s me doing the work for the series as I also struggle to believe they had this all planned out at the time.

How nice of Dr. Gero and Dr. Myu to manufacture a semi-automatic handgun for the new Nr. 17 even though he doesn't use or need it. The gun seems to be was Nr. 17 had on him when he was being turned into a cyborg. Nice of Dr Gero and Myu to also knit Hell-17 an exact copy of the clothes of Earth-17. From memory no less (and luckily enough Earth-17 was absolutely dedicated to this particular getup so he kept it for over a decade). Who knew that those two brilliant scientists were also expert tailors? And not only that, they somehow figured out how the afterlife works despite having no foreknowledge of the place or any instruments with them to do any research. So Dr Gero is a veritable renaissance man, world-class robotics engineer, genetics expert including xeno-biology, one-of-a-kind AI programmer (with some hiccups) and can also intuitively understand dimensional physics, a field that seems to elude even the very gods as they didn't know about this way to create portals.
Why exactly was this guy playing third banana in some two-bit terrorist organisation led by a small-minded idiot? Inventing and patenting that infinite energy source, that's tiny, light-weight, has the energy output of several suns, requires zero maintenance and creates no exhaust alone would set him up for life. I mean, not even the far more advanced aliens of the Frieza Force have anything comparable.

I think it would make it a little more plausible that a Madoshi would know how to escape hell using some sort of arcane magic, at leat it would be better than two random scientists knowing how to do it.
Also, with all the nonsense in this episode it makes sense that you didn't have time to mention the other inconsistencies.

Even at 10 years old, an age where every spoiler for Boo and GT I read sounded like the coolest thing ever, learning about the Super #17 Arc just confused me and had me wondering if multiple websites were lying to me. Maybe it's because #17 is one of those characters who, from my introduction to him to now, I've always felt complete apathy towards. But reading all this crazy stuff about fusions and absorptions, that long-haired Super Saiyan Goku figure the shops were selling while the Cell Game was still airing was a real thing that will actually happen, the Earth being destroyed twice, everyone becoming possessed slaves and the Dragon Balls turning evil. And being told that sometime between all that, "and that guy you don't care about and forgot about the second Cell absorbed him gets to headline an entire story arc and be the next big bad in line" would have me thinking "but why though?" It seemed like such a step back compared to all the other post-Cell stuff I was learning about.

I never saw the opening parts of the Super 17 arc, just the later parts of it, so I never knew the other 17 was built by Gero and Gero at Home in Hell. When the first Budokai Tenkaichi game covered the Super 17 story (more like breezed through it), it implied that the 17 from Hell was the one from Future Trunks' timeline. At least, that's the take away I got since the game said that the other 17 was sent to Hell when he was defeated, which I assumed to mean that he was the one Future Trunks beat when he went back to his timeline.

I came to assume that the portal between Hell and Earth is established by the two 17s because they both have identical ki. It's like a weird glitch in reality with one person being in two different locations, so the process of them syncing their ki mucks up the natural order.
No such logic is inferred or implied in the show itself, obviously. It's all nonsense. I just remember trying to rationalise the nonsense by connecting dots that the writers themselves never cared about. And even my suggestion buckles once you recall that the numbered Artificial Humans don't have ki.

I've always wondered if maybe at some point when this story was first being developed, the #17 in hell was originally supposed to be the same one Future Trunks killed in his timeline, but then while production had already started, someone decided it wouldn't make sense for the #17 from the future to be in present day hell, and so hastily came up with clone idea instead.

They honestly should've just included Babidi in the villain alliance, would make way more sense for his character to know all this hell portal magic stuff instead of the scientists.
They could also just have build a more magic-looking robot to fuse with 17, no reason why it needs to looks like 17 at all. I mean, sure technically Dende and Picollo are very genetically similar but I'd assume it's some other kind of similarity that makes them able to connect through hell and back. Oh well.
Also, does it even make sense for Dr.Mu to be there? I always got the impression you'd get to Earth's hell if you died on Earth. I know that is the case in Super's canon but is it really exclusive to that? Like, Mu died in the other side of the galaxy why the hell is he there? Sure some people who died on namek are also there but... well, why are they there??
I'm also confused to why Mu and no.19 even have souls to begin, they are both complete robots, aren't they? Does that mean Major Metallitron is also in hell? that sucks... (edit: just watched further into the video and saw him, I had forgotten he is in there, poor dude. But wait, black's freaking mecha accompanies him into hell too??)

Yeah, this arc definitely was the most lackluster writing wise out of GT's run. I definitely think it's lower than the two arcs that bookend it.
A couple other observations i noticed when re watching the show not so long ago:
    - I don't understand why Dr. Myuu is in Hell. He's not an organic living being. Dr. Gero makes sense because he was formerly a full blooded human at one point but was reconstructed as a cyborg later on.
    - I just have to say that of all the encounters with the resurrected villains Vegeta coming across Nappa again was kind of amusing, because the way the latter lunges at him angrily (He clearly still hasn't forgotten about how Vegeta effectively stabbed him in the back by blasting him into oblivion after Goku had disabled him with the Kaio-ken back then) though still i wish that he'd actually gotten a line or two of dialogue. Even something like "Vegeta, you bastard!!!!" or even "Raaaaaaaaagh...traitor!!!!!!" rather than just angry grunting. I also wish that he didn't get immediately vaporized but them actually trading blows a little though that said it was to show how much stronger Vegeta is compared to even back then.

Another great example of where one COULD nitpick but its okay because of the sake of the story is Gohan during the Android/Cell arc.
We know from Trunks that Gohan in the next 13 years will only get as strong as he does (i.e. not strong enough to kill the androids), despite constantly fighting the Androids (and presumably getting zenkai boosts along the way).
And yet in this arc we see a much younger Gohan not only surpass the androids, but Perfect Cell.
You can argue that in the main timeline Gohan trained an additional 4 years (3 before the arc and one in the RoSaT) before the androids showed up and his anger caused the final push to SSJ2, but wouldn't Future Gohan have had at least similar gains over the additional 9 years, including anger from losing everyone?
But because Cell go powerscaled way beyond the androids, and Toriyama wanted the arc to end with Gohan saving the day, he had to power up Gohan to match what was needed, future version be damned.
Without Gohan getting his place to shine, it could have ended with Goku dealing the final blow, yes. But that would have been boring. Goku trained, Goku won, the end. Great.
Trunks could have dealt the final blow, but that would leave the present feeling like they lost their MVP once Trunks heads home. And Vegeta winning, well, he did not need that ego boost at this stage of his journey.
So it had to be Gohan. And the story was better for it.
