  • Dragon Ball Dissection enters the final battle against Majin Boo! Punches are thrown, blasts are blasted, but what's really important is the heart and soul. After a long stretch of forgettable and pointless bits of action, does this arc finally stick the landing?

    As you may or may not know, the powers that be have taken issue with my using Dragon Ball music in the opening. I suppose that's certainly their right. As a result, I have made the difficult choice to replace the opening music in most of The Boo Arc videos with a new, UA-cam-friendly piece. I hope you like it. As a compromise, I have retained the original music in a few select Boo Arc videos scattered across the arc. For those who miss the original, follow this link to the opening as I uploaded it in 2020. Thanks so much for your support!

      And to play into his following point about things in Dragon Ball being allowed to be jokes and serious at the same time, that interpretation doesn't invalidate what ACTUALLY happened which was Vegeta realizing he did care about his son right after watching Cell kill Trunks right before his eyes, humbling himself by apologizing to Gohan after having a pointless tantrum about it, and then helping to defeat Cell by blasting him with the distraction beam and taking the second chance afforded to actually take the Being A Dad thing seriously afterwards. They can both be true.

    So I think you’ve generally nailed what I was going for. The thing that exacerbates the idea that the speech is treated as a gag (not discrediting the truth of what Vegeta said as true) is the ending it leads to. If the punchline isn’t hit at the end of the joke and Vegeta thinks his work is done then he doesn’t come up with the plan that would actually save the universe. Alongside the Kanzenban ending which still has Vegeta seeking to surpass Goku - I think the speech is something the character learns from BUT he realizes that Goku isn’t as unbeatable as he was making him out to be. This is also why I think the lesson that ends the Boo Arc is team work. The only way Toriyama could tie up the constant protagonist whiplash is to have “everyone works together” as the actual way to beat Boo. Great video!

      A lot of my favourite gags are in service of and play off true statements. Vegeta's speech being handed a gag does not discredit what he said, it just utilises the situation to make a joke. Goku still wins, the universe is still saved and Goku still asserts himself as the hero once and for all. But also it's funny how in that moment Goku is like "I dunnoooooooo"

      One of my reasons it works as a joke is it's a realization that would have helped a lot in almost any of the other story arcs. It would have helped a lot if Vegeta realized Goku was a lot stronger than him in the Frieza arc. It REALLY would have helped things if he accepted that in the android or cell arc.
      Now he recognizes, and it's still true, it's just not pertinent in this one case.

      @Kate Grant I always loved Kid Buu because the thing people seem to forget is Toriyama is just kind of a goofy guy in general. Comedy and fun come first for him and action comes second, but everyone always seems to take Dragonball super seriously like it's this super grim dark type of epic. So for a final villain, Kid Buu is perfect. He's goofy, dances, beats his chest, and while everyone desperately tries to put him down, he laughs the entire time. So it makes perfect sense for every thing, even the serious moments to be a little silly.

    I'm a little sad that you sorta just skimmed over the wish to give Goku his strength back. It's pretty short, but I've always really liked it, especially in regards to this being the finale of the series. These titular objects, the things that the series is named after, have kinda fallen by the wayside for a lot of the story as it went on. But now here, at a point in time where the balance of power constantly fluxes back and forth between the heroes and villain (like a Tennis Match), what is the *final* thing that pushes the heroes to ultimately overcome the villain and secure a victory? It was the Dragon Balls. The namesake of the series. The objects where everything began.
    I mean, I know it's technically the Namekian Dragon Balls and not the Earth ones', so maybe it's not quite as poignant. But I always thought it was kinda cool.

Vegeta’s monologue, fat buu’s reemergence, to mr. satan asking everyone for their energy, the cameos from characters long forgotten and the first time in canon that the GenkiDama actually worked. I think I’ll say my favorite part of this arc is the face goku makes once the genki Dama is complete. Like even he’s surprised by how big it is. That feeling is the weight of his whole planet on his shoulders. Everyone he’s saved whether they know it or not are now saving him. It’s such a fantastic way to end the story. The discussion of Dragon Ball's humor and how it doesn't undermind the drama was a very good point. Toriyama does tend to do it pretty well since Dragon Ball was always a comedy. I was never a Mr. Satan person before viewing these videos, but you’ve put it into perspective that he does have a great journey that was foreshadowed even during the Cell Games when he swallows his pride and carries #16's head to Gohan so he can say his piece, which also proves key in saving the day. Nice moment.

    I’m really happy that the arc culminates with a Spirit Bomb being the way to save the day. I’d even argue that Buu should never have been defeated by anything else the moment the gunman shot the puppy and Mr. Satan.
    The arc starts with both the idea that a person can make a difference, and the idea that the lessons of the past can be forgotten by humanity giving in to their vices. Between Spopovich, Babidi’s magic, Majin Vegeta, and the gunman, that latter idea is continuously made and culminates with Buu, the representation of those vices and carefree disregard, and his rampage and eventual destroying the Earth, the ultimate punishment, So it’s only proper that Buu goes down with the representation of the former idea, an attack with energy collected by people for altruistic intentions in order to make a difference. Fusion and Gohan had no choice but to be sidelined in order to get to that point imo but I’m honestly ok with that for the thematic payoff.

If they had let Dende die from Kid Buu blowing up Earth, they could have used a non-upgraded Porunga’s first wish to restore Earth and then resurrect Dende…which would have instantly restored Earth’s Dragon Balls and available to summon Shenron, as shown back during the Frieza Arc when Kami got resurrected and Earth’s Dragon Balls were useable again even though a full year hadn’t passed since Roshi made the wish to resurrect Goku.

    Vegeta's speech being a joke is something that seems more likely as time goes on. With his portrayal in modern works like Super and the final page of the Kanzenban release, it seems like the only work that actually took it seriously besides the rest of the Buu Saga was GT ironically. He pretty much starts where he ends off there and not regress back into "I will surpass you, Kakarot!".

    • @Xeno574

      Vegeta is definitely one of the better things about GT, he actually feels like a completed character(even feels different). He even says he's the protector of Earth, he has never said that anywhere else, not even in Super. And he knew exactly where Goku was going at the end. Shows just how well he knows him.
      Heck, he sent everyone away and was completely willing to die to stop Omega Shenron. "You must live on" he said.

    • @Fuchsfeuer
      @Fuchsfeuer 2 роки тому +19

      I am of the opinion that this joke thing is an attempt at explanation by the Dragonball fanboys to explain DB Super and the character Vegeta there.
      I'm hearing it for the first time too. It's clearly an attempt at a Redcon.
      Vegeta clearly states that Goku is number one because he is better than himself in the first place and not because he is stronger than Boo or the strongest in the universe at the time.
      Goku was almost always weaker than his opponents. See Muten Roshi, Tau Bai Bai, Piccolo, Vegeta Himself, Freeza, Cell. Despite this, he almost always won and has become even stronger as a result.
      That makes him number one. Vegeta recognized that and even explains it.
      It was also about Vegeta having a rivalry and finally realizing that Goku is better even when he was weaker than himself. See the first fight between the two.
      Why Vegeta makes such a joke face has nothing to do with this realization. It's about Goku being weaker than he actually is. Neither Vegeta nor Goku himself knew that Goku couldn't show his full strength as ssj3, because both didn't know that this level, being alive, consumes far too much energy.
      PS: That even records super just by the way.
      Hence Vegeta making that 'joke' face. The joke is that Goku, being not alive, could have defeated Kid Boo and thus the situation looks very bad for them again and they destroyed the portaras shortly before as an alternative solution

    • @JackOfen
      @JackOfen 2 роки тому +14

      This is kinda funny to me. Because back when Super didn't exist a lot of people complained that GT regressed his character, because of episode 55 where Vegeta again grumbles about the fact that Goku got Super Saiyan 4 and he doesn't and wants to surpass him again. But as things always are, once a new thing comes out, the thing before becomes "nostalgic" and is viewed on more fondly.

Then again this wording probably saved a bunch of people who died in the rioting and stuff like at the hands of people like the duo who shot Mr Satan’s the dog, Bea. I have always wondered what happens to people who get killed by multiple villains. Say you were killed by Piccolo Daimao before and Cell later, Shen Long can’t help you. Porunga probably can. It is thus the acceptance that both of them need, for some foes, to just accept their weaknesses and work together.

    Goku telling Mr Satan that he’s a true champion is my favorite moment in Dragonball. It justifies Goku’s tendency to see good in others and his decision to save Satan earlier, and it is the payoff for Satan’s genuine efforts to stop the Buu crisis. From this point forward in all of the expanded media, Goku and Satan recognize and respect each other, always offering their strengths to help the other, and never criticizing the other’s shortcomings.
    Thematically it is also Goku’s ultimate triumph - the moment where his adoptive planet and it’s people support him when his strength isn’t enough. Everything about his mixed heritage as a sayan on earth throughout the entire story comes together in this moment.

    You really said it at 9:51. I think the "it's a gag" interpretation puts it at odds with Vegeta's character. Within those few pages, I can kind of see why it all plays off as a joke that you shouldn't take seriously. However, in the grand scheme of the battle, Vegeta takes a definite turn character-wise. He's willing to sacrifice himself, once again, and this time without complaint, solely for Goku to emerge victorious for all of them. There's not even a moment here where he believes he *can* win against Kid Buu. Hell, he even says "I'd like to see this Super Saiyan 3 up close" when Goku's prepping to fight-you'd expect him to grumble about *not* wanting to see it. I just see the gag as a plain funny moment rather than an assertion that Vegeta realized "wait, Kakarrot's actually an idiot, I should be surpassing him after all" as I've seen some saying in order to make sense of his characterization in Super (and the revised ending of the DB manga).

That it takes this long to fully come around feels a lot more truth to life than it has any right to be. It's frustrating... for mostly the right reasons if I'm wording this right..
    There's also what you mentioned about DB reforming villains and having them lose what made them appealing to begin with. I think that's why Cell Saga Vegeta onwards has more of a following that he has any right to. I mean, the Dragon Team doesn't really let him join him so much as he comes and goes as he himself pleases.

      The problem is it makes the others look like complete idiots to keep accepting him no matter how heinous or evil his actions have been. Killing those people for the asinine reason he had the way it's written should have been proof he will never change. But no he gets another chance. How many chances does one murderous dick deserve?

    15:01, course Yamcha forgot to also include the people Dr. Gero specifically killed in the wish, since he only brought back the people Cell killed, so all of those people Dr. Gero killed on that island he eye lasered half of are all still dead dead now.

    A lot of people see the final fight as simply Goku stealing the spotlight from Gohan to become the hero again. I disagree because Goku fails too. The new super saiyan form is unable to beat Buu. Instead Goku needs to work together with everyone. This is the best way Toriyama could’ve written the defeat of the final villain.

  • @CptGallant
    @CptGallant 2 роки тому +2

    My only real problem with this fight is that once everybody has been resurrected, the obvious best strategy is to teleport Gohan over to Buu (either with a dragon ball wish or Goku's instantaneous movement) because he's by far the strongest fighter at that point and could easily kick Buu's ass. Instead, they go for a hail mary genki dama that they struggle to charge and which may not even work. Narratively, the genki dama and everybody getting involved is really nice, but it logically makes no sense.

Were so close to the end and i def dont agree with you 100% ( where would the fun be in that anyways) but I'm jonesing for your take on the ending because ice always been torn. I'm not sure when wrath of the dragon came out but I feel like that might be your next installment and either way more content is better. Agreed about movie 12s ending. I've always had that as a head canon of a story which takes place after goku and vegeta have died many years later (yes it's an insane stretch and would have to kind of ignore the whole crazy raid on earth) but it seems right that the last time goku and vegeta meet is to beat an enemy in the after life from their respective death sentences and then they both smile and say goodbye one more time after working together one final time. Again, its insanely illogical head cannon because it ignores half the story but I feel they should of EVENTUALLY ended their story this way. It would of been both bitter sweet and beautiful

    Wonderful video! It’s crazy to think that with all the praise you’ve been giving this arc is still going to only get a score of 1.
    You Know, in spite of how great of an ending this is, I still feel really bad about how hard Gohan gets shafted, especially how this arc opened by saying he was going to be the main character(maybe that was another sly Toriyama joke?)! It really makes me wonder if Gohan could have been the main character all throughout without changing too much. Maybe Gohan could be the one to throw the Genki Dana instead? It really bothers me too how Videl doesn’t seem to have much presence here, especially when Mr Satan starts talking. I know she couldn’t have done that much fighting but still, & poor old Launch never even got a cameo at the end:D
    Still, I think this was an incredibly satisfying conclusion & is one of my favourite end arc battles alongside Goku’s fight with Piccolo at the 23rd Budokai. Anyway, thanks for the excellent video & I can’t wait to see how you tackle the end of the series!

    This probably the best fight of the original Z series, no joke. I honestly too don't remember the fight scenes, besides the non-canon Anime only SSJ2 Goku vs Buu. For me this fight has mostly been about the drama and the pieces moving. Is why this particular fight is so damn popular in the videogames. Because the fight works EVEN if the fight itself is different from the canon, as most of the scene is drama and talking. Good shit.

    I always thought it was logical the Namakian Dragon Balls were 'upgraded' after the Freeza Saga.
    After their entire race was almost completely whiped out, they realised it could be useful to bring back multiple people at once from the death. They also experienced the fact this was a possibility since the Earth Dragon Balls could do this. Just like how Dende could implement some charasteristics from the Namakian Dragon Balls into Earth's ones, like multiple wishes.
    I would have liked the Namakians also did this to bring back the people from the village Vegeta killed, but I don't think this happened. Unless it was mentioned in the Moro arc from Super, but it has been a while since I read it. Possibly the total opposite was stated.
