This presentation was a gift for everyone who knows the original song. You can see that at all times the whole audience is just waiting for the song to "start". There is tension, and there is awe. Usually singers will start a song like that, and then after a verse or two, will fall into the original song. Dave had the insight of teasing everyone during the whole song, and just "release it" at the end, for the finishing chorus. It does not have the same impact for a first time listener of the song, the hook is different (it can still be a strong hook, but different nonetheless). One thing you can say about Dave; his main goal on the stage is to have fun. He knows that if he's having fun, everybody is having fun. Great rendition of his own song.

The best thing about Dave: He is truly just a normal dude, super famous, pretty much universally liked, a family man first, rocks on vocals, guitar, drums (good god), just a normal dude. Was at the OC Fair back in 05 or 06, I'm old so I can't remember exactly. In line to buy a corn on the cob, and I turn around to look at how long the line is. Well hello Mr. Dave f'ing Grohl is right behind me. I did the whole "Big fan" "blah blah blah" thing and he asked me if I had ever been to a show. I told him of course I had. I've seen the Foo in small joints, medium joints, stadiums. He asked me what was my favorite, I told him the medium joints/arenas. He asked why and I told him that the medium joints/arena are big enough to create a shared joy in the music, but not drown it out. He said "Interesting". Then he asked if I wanted a selfie with him. I told him I left my phone in the car (which I do often) and said it's okay, I don't need a selfie, I have in my possession the greatest camera ever made, my brain, my eyes, my ears.

Such a great performer. Their Shadow Dancing as the Dee Gees is epic. Taylor Hawkins on lead vocal and drums is legendary. Love Foo Fighters but the Dee Gees are just epic
4:08 That's Dave's thing. Just straight good rock and roll, no special effects, no messing with anything, he's not concerned about perfection as he believes rock should be imperfect, he even records/makes everything on an old analog music board from the 70's. He's just all about pure rock and roll. As a side note the first Foo Fighters album there was no band, Dave recorded the vocals and played all the instruments himself and recorded them separately and mixed them together. Not many have done this and it was a huge album he put together the band afterwards, I know Prince did this as well and Prince loved the Foo Fighters and one of Dave's life highlights he said was when Prince called him and asked if he could play a Foo Fighters song during Princes Super Bowl half time show. Prince also allowed Foo Fighters to cover his song Darling Nikki which is rare for Prince to allow anyone to cover his songs.
I love their Darling Nikki cover. Part of the reason Dave isn't the greatest live singer is all the energy he uses while playing. All that jumping while singing makes it kinda hard.
@@garrettyates647I thought the 1st album was all recorded by Dave. The next album he re did the drums which pissed off the original drummer before Taylor? I could be completely wrong 🤷🏻♂️
Great reaction! Your expression and smile are the same as mine the countless times I've watched this. There are so many more Foo Fighters songs to listen to. The Pretender is great...Etc etc etc. Plus, Dave is just a terrific human being.
I never want it to end either! Fortunate enough to see Foo Fighters twice, and I really had a blast! I knew every song they sang, and they also did a lot of covers, which were also great. At the end the audience kept cheering, trying to get the band to return for aother encore, for well over 30 minutes. I listened to all my Foo Fighters music for weeks before coming off that high, that rush, the feeling of emotion they carried the entire audience through. I've been going to concerts since I was 13, and I am now 60. I used to work as a local stagehand for major tours, also concert security, as well as just working for local bands early on in life. Easily top 3 of any concert I have ever seen. Dave Grohl is so great, talented, gets involved with so many other artists and bands, too many to list. Never a dull moment. Its like they set out to make each show the best show you will ever see, and make it so much better than the last. Dave Grohl once accidently fell off stage, broke his leg, and got the crew to get him setup to finish playing a concert in Gottenburg, Sweden. Sheer will power to overcome the pain he must have been going through. He went back after he recovered and did another show for them.
What a fantastic analysis, this is so different from the studio version but still showcases his vocal skills so well. Hope you listen to more from the Foo Fighters! Dave's vocals are standout in every era of the band
I've seen the Foo Fighters several times...including just last weekend! They truly are just one of the hardest working and best live bands around. They play for 3 solid hours, are great musicians, Dave is a fantastic front man...and I don't know how his voice holds up belting out songs at the top of his lungs that long night after night.
@@markvanderstelt8999 It's post-grunge, but also probably the main influence that transitioned grunge into post-grunge in the mainstream so pretty fair to just say "they're grunge" and leave it at that. Both genres have been dormant for decades now, why are we still gatekeeping terms?
You must see my hero playing with Shawn Hawkings on the drums, Shawn is son of Taylor, Drummer of Foo Fighter who passed away a couple years ago, here you will get goosebumps. Shawn was almost a child in that performance.
You'll get more than goosebumps watching that performance, it'll make you flat out cry, ESPECIALLY seeing as Shane played this song as a TRIBUTE to his recently passed away father, and this young teenager ABSOLUTELY ROCKED IT OUT. FRICKING PHENOMENAL
Nice. For giggles, check out the video of Foo Fighters doing this song at the LA forum with an 11yo Nandi Bushell guesting on drums...and absolutely crushing it. It's a hoot - and it rocks.
The best thing about seeing the Foo's live is each show is different. Each song is different from the studio. Dave wants everyone involved and feeling like they are part of the band. Always a crazy experience to see them live. You'll laugh almost as much as you sing along. However, it doesn't always make the best reaction because you really don't know what the original sounds like. But this was great. I love the way you understood what the Foo's are all about. Playing live and giving their fans a good show.
You mentioned listening to the studio version afterwards. It would have been so perfect if you just made it like a 'double feature'. It would have been awesome to see you realize how differently it was recorded. But everybody loves Dave because he's so great and if you keep watching their live performances, you'll keep smiling. Especially if you watch some of the ones where he brings audience members up to play with them. He does that ALOT.
Dave is a masterful musician and even better human being. He gives 100% every time he steps up to the microphone. This performance was from one of the greatest live shows ever recorded, it's worth a watch. However, I recommend the music video for "The Pretender" next. Brilliant songwriting, performance, and video.
One of the few songs that makes me so so happy but also somehow gets me in tears every time. It’s like being nostalgic for all the good memories but grieving the bad ones at the same time. And live…like that…I saw them last month and during this song, I just stood there and let it wash over me. Maybe I am overly emotional about this, but to me… this song is perfect. The whole damn album is perfect. February Stars. Hey, Johnny Park! Just 🖤🖤
Great reaction Bethany. Such a great song and an influential song. When you were saying I heard the name David Grohl (those of us that have known his music know he goes by Dave) before, maybe from a movie..... I was like nooooo.... Nirvana! That was fun to watch.
I enjoy this live version as much as the recording, because you get an extended song that shows the musicianship of Dave and the band, which is great to see!
They performed it 1000+ times, closing pretty much every show with this song. But it still sounds great, I actually liked it better than the studio version. Dave really knows how to engage a massive, massive crowd. Thanks for the reaction video ! 'Run', 'Pretender', 'MIA' my other favs.
You smile and giggle at the same exact places i do, and I'm sure so many people out there do. Crazy how a song can make us all react so similarly without knowing each other is reacting. I skipped work and got fired to see Foo Fighters, 100% worth it lol
Dave is a cherished relic of that era. He is master of playing in any era though. Love the enthusiasm you have for him!!! He rocks...…check out more from him.
David Grohl is one of the best entertainers, musicians, and singers. Foo Fighters is one of the most wholesome bands too. All of his concerts are a surprise and a treat.
This show meant everything to him, he wrote about it in his book saying it was all he could think about for the six months leading up to it. Dave does have impressive vocals to offer, you'd probably find interest in songs like Best of You, Breakout, or Monkey Wrench. Later on I would try something on the acoustic side of In Your Honor, like On The Mend (specifically live in Hollywood 2006).
Absolute must is the official video for “Learn To Fly” with a couple of special guest cameos 😁 Other great Foo’s songs to check out include: Times Like These, The Pretender, Come Back & Walk
Bethany... your insight is so wonderful. Such a joy to experience your smile while watching this....what a beautiful woman to make us all enjoy this beautiful song through your eyes.
I have been lucky enough to see them three times in concert. 2013, 2021, and last year at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in LA. Every single show has been incredible. I also have tickets for them next month and am incredibly excited.
This song has a LEGENDARY BUILD UP! All really great songs take their own path, not a path predetermined. The Foo Fighters themselves are LEGENDARY! Your joy at the final rousing climax was so very infectious!
Anyone could feel like they could walk into a Karoake bar and sing his songs.. his range doesn't seem crazy... but it's the strength of his personality behind it that is just insane.. he is ridiculously magnetic and he does it effortlessly.. with a self depracating sense of humour that is so relatable.. he is so humble in his personal life as well. Just an amazing person.. and one of the most influential musicians ever.... (have seen foo fighters live.. just amazing.. bucketlist highlight)
For those who haven't experienced a Foo Fighters show in person, please do! You will never regret it! Dave is a fan of music first and going to gigs growing up was meant to be enjoyed for the band and audiences as one. He still brings the same youthful energy to everything he does. There is a reason he is known among his peers as one of the nicest people in the industry.
No joke, I logged on today to watch this very performance as it always perks me up and here's you reacting to it! Dave is just such a sincere dude who really appreciates the way music connects people. It's how he's able to captivate this massive audience so easily. You can tell he's having a blast and it's exactly how he was both times I saw them live. Highly recommend the official video for The Pretender as your first studio song from these guys. Great song with high quality production and a fantastic video. You can't go wrong though with the Foo's. Finally, anyone who recommends you react to Alter Bridge is smart and attractive and you should listen to them :D
Foos are absolutely a great preformance. You will leave being haapy and exhausted.... he gives you your monies worth every show. Taylor was a great part of the show.... id like to see Josh and how he brings his touch into the Foos.
I was born the same day, month, and year as Dave... and just like the M. Night Shyamalan movie, "Unbreakable," I'm Dave's (Bruce's) opposite. But I do love this song. P.S. Foo Fighters is to "Grunge" like Vegans is to In-N-Out Burger. P.S.S. Yeah, the end... when he waits... it's like us teasing our dogs with a Scooby Snack just before giving it to them. 😝
I’ve never been a fan of Nirvana nor Foo Fighters, but I am a big fan of Dave Grohl. He seems like the coolest dude in the world and would be a great friend.
Oh my gosh it's so fun and fascinating watching you analyze Dave's voice, especially just this one unique performance. So glad you smiled so much - welcome to Foo world, my friend! Believe me, we also never want it to end. I guarantee if Dave watched you do this, he would be amazed and likely laugh, not AT you, but just at the idea of him using the kinds of intentional techniques that you are describing. The man just sings from his heart, and typically sings his guts out. I do know he has put a lot of work into being able to scream so much of his live performances without blowing his throat out and still last 3 hours. Please be sure to check out a variety of his performances to get a better take on his voice, live and studio. Others here have mentioned The Pretender (one of my faves) is a great choice. Note that in the original studio version he sang the high part in the chorus, but quite a few years ago he switched and sang the low part, with Taylor singing the high. But sadly, now I think Chris sings the high part during live perfomances. To me his most beauItiful-melodic voice was when he sang with Nora Jones at the Paul McCartney Kennedy Center Honors show. They sang Maybe I'm Amazed, and you could tell he really worked on that to perfect his voice for all the ups and downs in that song. Just gorgeous! For slower stuff, also check out Walking After You (the studio version). Careful - once you sink into Dave and the Foo Fighters, you won't ever want to leave! :)
I love how when one time they didn't perform this in a show on their tour people complained afterwards so much that the next show was all only this song.
Always love seeing and hearing Dave and the Foo Fighters perform “Times Like These” live. Most recently I heard this song live in London June 2024. They did a great performance of the song.
Check "Times like these - acoustic version" (very different from the studio version). Here Dave also plays all the instruments and do the chorus too. In my opinion one of the deepest, most intimate songs of him.
One of my favourite songs of all time and I got to see it live last year. Dave and the Foofighters YOU ROCK! Not sure if you take requests Bethany but Devilskin from New Zealand have who I think is one of the greatest female voices in rock, Jenny Skulander. Would love to hear your thoughts - keep up the great work.
@the vocalyst - Worth noting that this is Dave giving an opportunity for the fans to be heard and be part of the video - the original song is very different and you hear a very different voice from Dave. Love the original but love that he gives these opportunities to the fans. Big fan of the man and the Foos for the past 30 years.
I'm going to say I love the original. I also love this and other live versions. Just a counter point to those who were less than enthusiastic about this performance. Holy crap time flies!
For my entire life, I have struggled with picking favorites, and that includes music. But when I heard Everlong, I quickly realized that I had found my favorite, and I have now been listening to it on repeat for months. I don't have any nostalgia or anything for it, as I only heard it for the first time recently, but it still manages to give me some of those same emotions. It's such a great song.
This moment at Wembley might be "peak Foo". They were at the height of the band and it's so well captured in this video. Dave is definitely a restless and creative intellect -- it seems like he starts a new project in wildly different areas every couple of weeks.
Dave Grohl is an incredible human being. Besides Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, he has been in a couple of other bands, and played drums on a ton of other peoples music. I see lots of good recommendations here already, but I will second The Pretender, as well as My Hero at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute. Taylor was the drummer for Foo Fighters until he passed away in 2022. This show was a tribute to him, and his son Shane played drums on My Hero. It's a must see.
One of the top 5 concerts I've ever been to. The energy level was off the charts! Almost a 3 hour show. Grohl is a top level songwriter and entertainer. Bar none.
I feel like I have grown up with and know Dave even though we've never met. I was on tour the only time that Foos played my little punk club in Portland OR and he joined Nirvana after they had gotten big enough that I wasn't seeing them anymore. But his songwriting comes from the same scene and the same place and the same world that I was in and it just hits home every time. I'm so happy for their success and their longevity. RIP Taylor. I saw Alanis Morrissette in a tiny club the week she hit number one and Taylor Hawkins was a show stealer on a stage of 'em. The concert was WILD energy but all I could talk about after was the drummer. He was the perfect foil for Dave and I can't even begin to imagine the loss. The band handled it so well, so respectfully, and the process of bringing Josh in was done the only way it could be. Class. The video of Shane drumming in place of his dad makes me cry just thinking about it.
ohh wow... having just newly discovered you, and having grown up with and forever loving these songs, I've watched a few of your analyses of 90s grunge performances, and I have to say that your descriptions are spot on perfect and intriguing. just love your reactions to some of the vocalizations you're hearing, how obviously thrilled and chilled to experience certain segments of a song and their vocals. in particular, in the beginning of this clip, Dave's slow tempo is mesmerizingly dark and deep-meaning, and beautifully conversational. his build-up to the song finish is killer, enticing the crowd into anticipation and closure. this is showmanship, this is art. this is music. well done Dave, and well done Bethany 💯🎶
The girl he's singing about is Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt, they were together at that time... and she sang background on the album version. I met her around a year ago on her first solo tour, she confirmed these points... cheers! 🤘🎶
I would HIGHLY recommend you watch Foo Fighters performing "My Hero" at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute concert. Its an absolutely awesome and incredibly emotional performance

Not trying to be pedantic, just historically correct. The band recorded the first album. Dave didn't like the product so he re-did it all himself.
I really like this lady , she's such a beautiful genuine soul 😍 ❤
i second that :)
What a fantastic analysis, this is so different from the studio version but still showcases his vocal skills so well. Hope you listen to more from the Foo Fighters! Dave's vocals are standout in every era of the band
🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🔥🔥 I love this version of the Foo Fighters Everlong,, great, great choice, wonderful reaction,,, gave me goosebumps as well🤘🏼🔥🤘🏼
Times Like These is my favorite Foo Fighters' song. The acoustic version is spectacular.
+1
I've seen the Foo Fighters several times...including just last weekend! They truly are just one of the hardest working and best live bands around. They play for 3 solid hours, are great musicians, Dave is a fantastic front man...and I don't know how his voice holds up belting out songs at the top of his lungs that long night after night.
He IS the 90s grunge sound. Literally. RIP Taylor. ❤
RIP Taylor.
they are not grunge
@@markvanderstelt8999 It's post-grunge, but also probably the main influence that transitioned grunge into post-grunge in the mainstream so pretty fair to just say "they're grunge" and leave it at that. Both genres have been dormant for decades now, why are we still gatekeeping terms?
@@TheSquareOnes they are a good Rock Band just Because you think you are a Expert and want Everyone to Agree With You Sorry I Beg To Differ .
@@markvanderstelt8999 What?
Welcome ❤ To know them is to love them.
You must see my hero playing with Shawn Hawkings on the drums, Shawn is son of Taylor, Drummer of Foo Fighter who passed away a couple years ago, here you will get goosebumps. Shawn was almost a child in that performance.
Shane
Hawkins.
Shawn Hawkings 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nice. For giggles, check out the video of Foo Fighters doing this song at the LA forum with an 11yo Nandi Bushell guesting on drums...and absolutely crushing it. It's a hoot - and it rocks.
Love your reactions and insight.
I love him! List to acoustic version of Times Like These. His voice is INCREDIBLE!
Saw them live last month and they were amazing. Your next foo song should be The Pretender or Monkey Wrench.
Honestly she could pick anything off the first few albums. Their more recent music is slept on but it’s all great.
I was at this show what an awesome night that was and I was watching them a few weeks ago again London best band live I have ever seen.
I love that whole concert from Wembley. Sames on the goosebumps. Every single time.
I cried when I heard/saw this the first time. It's such a warm hug to the fans.
They performed it 1000+ times, closing pretty much every show with this song. But it still sounds great, I actually liked it better than the studio version. Dave really knows how to engage a massive, massive crowd. Thanks for the reaction video ! 'Run', 'Pretender', 'MIA' my other favs.
Dave's videos are great. Everlong, The Pretender, Learn To Fly, My Hero. Watch those for sure.
The power of performance & stage presence regardless of the individual voice & singing abilities. Quite powerful. He's/they got it.
You smile and giggle at the same exact places i do, and I'm sure so many people out there do. Crazy how a song can make us all react so similarly without knowing each other is reacting. I skipped work and got fired to see Foo Fighters, 100% worth it lol
My favourite rock band!
I was at that gig. Such a great band live.
Saw them twice, and both were phenomenal shows! “Aurora” and “Walking After You” are particularly awesome
Absolute must is the official video for “Learn To Fly” with a couple of special guest cameos 😁
Other great Foo’s songs to check out include: Times Like These, The Pretender, Come Back & Walk
Times Like These is my favorite song hands down. Check out Glastonbury 2017. 🎶🤗🎵
Bethany... your insight is so wonderful.
I was at that show. It was awesome. I saw them 2 weeks ago at Villa park also, both shows were excellent!
(have seen foo fighters live.. just amazing.. bucketlist highlight)
i know a lot of woman who have fallen in love with dave grohl, but its a treat watching it in real time
Great choice for a first song by them. Also, his control of the crowd is amazing.
I’ve been to a few shows and took my 8 year old this year. What an experience. 😊
Yes you'll love the studio version, and please check out The Pretender. I love The Foo Fighters
In love with your hair :)
I get full body goosebumps everytime I see this performance..
She MUST review more of that epic Wembley show. Every song is unreal.
Great reaction. You are lovely btw! As a musician myself this band is my hidden joy from all the jazz and gospel music I play.
1st i must say u look awesome u would have made Stunning Dr wow and yr reactions are super awesome ...Thanks Bethany
He recorded every part for this album. A remarkale feat, considering its quality and popularity
He just wasn't in foo fighters, he is FOO FIGHTERS, he basically did played all the instruments and did the vocals when foo fighters was created
2008 tour was my favorite by far
Bar none.
I think we need a reaction to the studio version also ❤❤❤
I feel like I have grown up with and know Dave even though we've never met.
The Pretender (official video) is a great one to check out.
Dave is the man ! Rock stars still live ! Do more Foos ! Seeing them at Fenway Park next week !
There goes my hero watch him as he goes. That's when you should watch It's and listen to at least at the very least listen to it It's amazing
I saw them last month for the first time! In my bucket list for years. Best concert I have acer seen! So worth the wait!!
DG is just unstoppable. Such a great showman.
Quickly rose to my top three Vocal reactors. Ty for your enthusiasm and thoroughness!
Same concert, "Best Of You", hell of a performance
The girl he's singing about is Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt, they were together at that time... and she sang background on the album version. I met her around a year ago on her first solo tour, she confirmed these points... cheers! 🤘🎶
The Foo Fighters performing “Times Like These” on SNL was epic.
I would HIGHLY recommend you watch Foo Fighters performing "My Hero" at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute concert. Its an absolutely awesome and incredibly emotional performance
one of my favourite Turkish artists is Sezen Aksu. you must listen her voice. it's gorgeous!!
Great performance by Dave making a stadium show seem intimate but the studio version of this will always be the best.
I would love to see you react to something else from Foo Fighters, maybe The Pretender? That shows his range pretty well.
