James Hetfield has said before that they get a lot back from fans saying how this song helped them in dark times and made them feel like they weren't alone. It did the same for me when I first heard it at a young age. "I wrote the song at a friend's house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, we had been thrown out of our manager’s house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It's a suicide song and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song, but we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better."
James's moms death is an integral part of this song. She (Cynthia; also once an opera singer) passed away from cancer when he was just 16. His parents were strict Christian Scientists and didn't believe in medication, just faith healing, so had his mom gone to the hospital, she may have survived (and certainly longer than she did). She also helped James pay for the amp that was among the gear that was stolen). Very important pieces to the story of the song "Fade to Black".

The anthem of a generation of metal heads with issues and no help out there! It helped so much to know we weren’t alone and it was ok to not be ok. I don’t know how I would have survived my youth without metal music to release my anger and anxiety! Metallica family for life!
Honestly, I like Metallica but they wouldn't even be probably in my top 10 bands, but this particular concert might be the greatest live performance I've ever seen captured on film. Start to finish it's just epic.

Have you heard the Woodstock 1994 version? That's my favorite version of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by a mile! There are many, but Jame's crowd work, Jason's bass intro... it really feels honorable to Cliff without it actually being cliff. It's a masterful homage and so energetic.
Forr those who don't know, It is based on the Ernest Hemingway novel of the same title. Amazing book, the audio version narrated by Campbell Scott is my favorite book ever ! It is like a movie but with the visuals in your head (and that is coming from a guy with little imagination, lol)

It's like an engine slowly getting started, overcoming the inertia and then kicks into the next gear... and into a higher gear producing more mower...more energy...the vocals, the music, the lights, their body language .... such energy. it is brilliant.
Have to hear Metallica's "no leaf clover" live with San Francisco Symphonic Orchestra is a master piece. Metallica song even they are long are not boring because the changes of rithms and don't have the classical verse/bridge/chorus structure.
It's so easy to box musical styles based on the cliches of their genre, but throughout heavy guitar-based music there is complexity, amazing musicianship, humbleness and bare emotion. @The Vocalyst I enjoy your videos for the dissection of the music from someone who clearly hears each part in isolation as well as the output as a whole. TY.
Oh the memories! I lived out on the coast of Washington barely a year into my marriage and the wife was around 6 months pregnant with our 1st born when we went to this show. I always told him that this show counted as his first because I was sure he heard it. You can say he was a fan right out of the womb because he and I saw Metallica together close to a dozen times as he was on his journey to becoming the best metal head partner a father could ask for.
The chord choices and minor key are SO PERFECT for the theme of this song. It sounds sad and is when the band had their gear stolen very early in their career (not easily replaced at the time and it caused a gig to be canceled if I recall correctly) so if felt like their world just fell apart.
I love her and her comments and reactions. She feels so genuine. Being a vocal coach and listening on this song for the first time. Now I would love to see James Hetfield comment on this video. Hearing his comments on her comments. Very meta but I would love that. 😊
I remember an eighth grade my first concert was Too Fast for Love and then a few other sprinkled in there and then I was blessed with having my girlfriend take me to see this band called Metallica that I knew very little about with the exception of kill’em all and it was the Master of Puppets tour for me Cliff was still around then And right up until the early 90s never missed a tour, the 80s were a blast
The Vocalyst: Do yourself and favor and listen to the studio version. You will LOVE the intro and outro solos so much better. This is an epic composition. You could even hear a piano version note for note by Gamazda on UA-cam. Love your reaction!
Very good reaction, one of Metallica's best concerts without a doubt. You should check out these songs too like Bleeding me, The outlaw thorn, Low man's lyric. from the albums Load (1996) in these two cases of the concert with the San Francisco Symphony (1999) and Reload (1997) Greetings from Argentina
I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting, so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 54 now and have had battled depression all my life, this song has been my life line...
You are very talented at what you do, I love watching your reactions of music I love because you hear things that i don't. Thank you for doing Metallica
you should react to their recent performance of elton johns "funeral for a friend /love lies bleeding"... incredible, they are great at covering other artists.
I have seen Metallica 16 times since 1988. This tour was by far their best sounding tour of them all. The band sound was so tight and James Hetfield's vocals were at their peak. His singing went downhill a little bit from here on out, and ironically, it was right after this that he started taking vocal lessons. Make sure to check out the song And Justice For All from this show, too. The ending is epic.
Years ago I fell in love with a woman who taught me what it is to feel what this song attempts to convey. She was my princess for four years, and I've been her victim ever since the day she ended us out of the blue, without warning or cause, to pursue a married co-worker and then sought to cost me my job, filed false charges against me (fully acquitted months later), and for two years continued filing false police report after false police report. Those who feel I must have done something know where my mind was at the time. I was a convenient victim. She didn't want friends and co-workers to see her for the calculating, cold-hearted robot she was capable of being. So she used me... made it look like I was the bad person so she could play the victim. And I still have the nightmares decades later. This song encapsulates the emotions she gave me to endure for a lifetime.
I feel you brother. The pain haunted me for years and it was a long process to let go. It helps to understand how messed up in the head those people are that can do those sort of things. I have learned to forgive them (yep I've suffered two of them) and even feel sorry for them. I wouldn't go back and change anything, it was definitely a hard and painful way of learning but it helped me to where I am today. My mind still reminds me of it now and then, but I don't feel attached to it anymore. I've learned to just let those thoughts dissipate without clinging to them. I truly hope that you are, or have been able to, find peace. Calm seas don't make a skilled sailor, I am thankful for the storms.
No, no, no. This song should be studio only. Live has completely the wrong vibe. The studio version has saved countless lives, it's appallingly beautiful.
James sounds like a cat struggling live. I don't understand why so many people this is great, Metallica was never a great sounding band live compared to studio. Ever.
I completely respect your point. And probably the best place to start given I heard studio version many times, learned the guitar riffs, etc before seeing live the first time in 1989. On the recent tour M72 - James has been taking a couple minutes right before the end to discuss suicide openly. Most fans know of the struggles he has faced with addiction, his upbringing .. and for people, especially teenagers, to see a man like James Hetfield really open up and make himself vulnerable is an extremely moving event. But fully agree to check out the studio version and acknowledge how powerful that is as well .. especially for one of the up and coming heavy metal bands in the early and mid 1980s. (and being in middle school at that time and being the first Metallica fan in my class I knew the truth but had to deal with the opinions / judgements of other students, parents, pastors, etc on Metallica . Although I was lucky to have parents that lived a very moral existence, practiced what they preached, but never judged my musical interests .. that always left a very strong impression on me)
I very much enjoy your Metallica videos. I heard my first Metallica when I was 12. I'm in my 40s now and they're still my favorite band. Every time you say "I like this" I just think to myself, oh she's in for a treat!

I am 54 years old...55 next month... I think I've seen Metallica 8 times live. From the 80's to the early 2000's. Amazing live band. I dunno if anyone is better.
Watching you watching it for the first time gives me a glimmer of what it was like on my first listen of the song. What's remarkable is that this was composed in the early 80's, and was incredibly sophisticated by comparison with their demos and first album a couple of years earlier. For me the best song they ever did though was Master of Puppets. The combination of metal guitar and classical guitar influence gives it such depth and variety.
Old metallica were literally gods back in the day-I miss those days in early 90s late 80s I loved being a headbanger in my youth! I still love being one now+ I get to see the kid's I had hear this stuff for the first time and love it!: THIS was definitely the generation too have been part of honestly
Very grateful I got to see them on this tour, Feb 10, 1989 when I lived in Lakeland Florida. Also saw them in 1988 at Monster's of Rock in Tampa. They changed as a band after this album. Their next album was the last one that was truly one that I could enjoy. But I'm so glad I saw them while they were epic and amazing.
I was 13 yrs old and waited for the local record store to open to be one of the first to get the tape Ride The Lightning. Nothing will ever beat the 80s music, no matter what type of music you prefer.
9:31 that’s part of the fun of genres like Metal & Punk, learning that particular vocalists style and pronunciation. Obviously some Metal singers can be nearly impossible to understand at a first listen, but once you really pour into that band’s catalog, you start to understand him. Unique band singers that I love in those genres: Bad Brains suicidal tendencies Megadeth Cryptic slaughter The Accused Nuclear Assault Sepultura DRI
Something fun to do would be to compare an older performance to a recent one. You mentioned their long career and what that can do to a voice, I think it would be very interesting to watch. You could do it in sections like you do now, but flipping back and forth.
If you watch their documentaries you'll be surprised to find out that James never intended nor wanted to be a lead singer. It just happened that was after they booted mustaine. Imo I think if you watch their newer stuff, you might feel like I do, even at his current age, his voice is the best it's ever been. He didn't get coaching until like 00's or 10's or something. It could also be the quality of the recording products available now compared to then but it's still very noticable and I never appreciated them as much as I do now, now that I'm learning to play guitar and listening to them every day. Thank you for doing this, turn a new audience on to Metallica.
I love hearing your vocal analyses of musicians, singers, artists, especially when intently tuning into the songs for the first time with your "expert" ears , even if you may have heard the songs before in the car, or in movies, or on TV series. Bethany, would love to hear your expert vocal analyses and visceral impression of any of the following songs: "Maps" sung by Karen Oh of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Heroes" sung by David Bowie "Teardrop" by Massive Attack Thank you for teaching me more about the wonders and variations and the magic of these vocal artists who create our living soundtracks.

Over the years I found myself wishing that certain songs did not end but would keep on going because all of it takes you on a journey. Thank you for doing what you do because it has added another layer of depth and appreciation to my fav band and their music!
Creeping death live moscow 91. Awesome performance!!!
I stumbled onto your One reaction video, then this one.. As a life long Metallica fan, its SO fun to see your appreciation of the talent. You wear it on your face and and its refreshing. Might have to spend a nice Sunday tomorrow dusting off some old vinyl..
Creeping death, Moscow 91. I used to crank the stereo turntable everyday after school to Creeping Death...almost had those words forever written on me under my first skull tattoo...one of my all time favorites. They ruled the world at that time...the memories..... Thank you
The anthem of a generation of metal heads with issues and no help out there! It helped so much to know we weren’t alone and it was ok to not be ok. I don’t know how I would have survived my youth without metal music to release my anger and anxiety! Metallica family for life!
For me... Listening to Metallica is like listening to a musical story plus the bonus lyrics.
I love seeing someone experiencing the stuff that occupied the majority of my youth for the first time and loving it.
🤘😎
Exactly! Loving Metallica all my life, it's great to see a first time listener loving it as well.
Seattle 89 concert. Love it.
Honestly, I like Metallica but they wouldn't even be probably in my top 10 bands, but this particular concert might be the greatest live performance I've ever seen captured on film. Start to finish it's just epic.
Yep 100%...I hope she covers "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" from this concert as well.
All vocal coaches should only react to this show as the first time.
Seattle is really good but I think the one from Mexico City is the best.
@@chrisselfridge9841 both of these are peak Metallica. I stopped listening to them a long time ago, but when I occasionally need a "fix" I go to these two recordings. Pure energy.
I really enjoy seeing this beautiful lady reacting to the greatest metal of all time. God I miss experiencing this first hand. We’re all old now boys n girls.
Please do more Metallica! I love your reaction videos! I loved listening to them growing up and still do to this day (well at least the first 4-5 albums anyway), but watching reaction videos provides me with a much deeper appreciation from a different prospective. Thank you.
Check out Death Magnetic album its old school METALLICA not the modern crap they did in Load thru St Anger. I hated all those albums. First song i heard from Death Magnetic (on radio) really confused me how there was an old Metallica song i didn't know.
i see that you like metallica's ballads a lot :), that's not a surprise because metallica produced one of the most beautiful and melodic acoustic/clean guitars ballads ever
This and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" from this Ride the Lightning album are my all time favorite Metallica tracks! Thanks for the review!
Good choices
Have you heard the Woodstock 1994 version? That's my favorite version of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by a mile! There are many, but Jame's crowd work, Jason's bass intro... it really feels honorable to Cliff without it actually being cliff. It's a masterful homage and so energetic.
Forr those who don't know, It is based on the Ernest Hemingway novel of the same title.
Amazing book, the audio version narrated by Campbell Scott is my favorite book ever ! It is like a movie but with the visuals in your head (and that is coming from a guy with little imagination, lol)
@@kennethalbert4653really? No I didn’t know that. I’ll have to search out the audio book. Thanks
@acidheadzzz Enjoy ! Make sure it is Campbell Scott, I think his reading of it can't be beat. (I listened on Audible but I'm sure it is available elsewhere)
I grew up to them.... This is a very Powerful song and let's just say
Now Thank's for your reaction
🎉✌️🎸❤️🔥
For Whom The Bell Tolls ALSO is so good.....
I just suggested that!!! It’s a masterpiece of heavy metal music!!
You can say he was a fan right out of the womb because he and I saw Metallica together close to a dozen times as he was on his journey to becoming the best metal head partner a father could ask for.
your videos make me cry all the f times... i cant stop... idk why... i just love the music so much and your reactions makes me crack.... wth
One of the best Guitar Riffs ever
If this song doesn’t bring a tear to your eyes, then you have never been there……to the edge
Once you are into that, there is no coming back
Ya have been Metallicized 🥲
Mesmerized by their instruments, vocals and powerful lyrics... plus add their energy... that's how one becomes a FAN4LIFE🤘🏽😎
Seeing Metallica live was one of the greatest musical moments of my life. They're absolutely phenomenal.
Your description is accurate their music does transport you
Yes! Finally! Thank you for doing FTB.
Metallica can mesmerize a person with just their instruments... then add James vocals and powerful lyrics... that's how one becomes a FAN4LIFE🤘🏽😎
I adore you. I just adore your delivery. Thank you for your brilliance, I am not sure how I have learned so much through your view.
The Vocalyst: Do yourself and favor and listen to the studio version. You will LOVE the intro and outro solos so much better. This is an epic composition. You could even hear a piano version note for note by Gamazda on UA-cam. Love your reaction!
I love your facial expressions with your ensuing thoughts. You articulate your emotion with your training.
"Melodic Writing..." RIP Cliff
Very good reaction, one of Metallica's best concerts without a doubt. You should check out these songs too like Bleeding me, The outlaw thorn, Low man's lyric. from the albums Load (1996) in these two cases of the concert with the San Francisco Symphony (1999) and Reload (1997) Greetings from Argentina

First saw them on the Justice Tour. Killer show and they are still killing it.
I love you for existing and I wish you the absolute best!
Welcome Home Sanitarium live Seattle 1989
I have been a fan of Metallica since 1994. I feel so Happy about you get how it is listning to Metallica. It Never gets old - Never.
The greatest show ever filmed bar none!!! Creeping Death from the same show would be awesome.
Thank you for your Reactions 🙏
They are great musicians that produced some iconic metal songs...some are quite melodic...
You are very talented at what you do, I love watching your reactions of music I love because you hear things that i don't. Thank you for doing Metallica
you should react to their recent performance of elton johns "funeral for a friend /love lies bleeding"... incredible, they are great at covering other artists.
I've seen the boys of Metallica 5 times. Never gets old. Metal gods. So glad you enjoy them.
glad i got to see this today. thanks for checking it out. i'd recommend something from their first s&m concert with the san francisco orchestra
This song meant so much to me in '84. I love this channel.
Love this song - it was the first real song I learned to sing on my guitar.
any song from Nimes 2009 is worth listening to...incredible performances
Check out S&M live album - Metallica w/ San Francisco Symphony
The only band that has been remaining for over 40 years with success as far as I know!
This only is AMAZING.
i was born in 69. how lucky were we to have the 80's and 90's music! i would sacrifice almost anything to relive those decades.
Yeeeeeeees finally
Although I was lucky to have parents that lived a very moral existence, practiced what they preached, but never judged my musical interests .. that always left a very strong impression on me)
Including mine and yes. The studio version is epic!
I very much enjoy your Metallica videos. I heard my first Metallica when I was 12. I'm in my 40s now and they're still my favorite band. Every time you say "I like this" I just think to myself, oh she's in for a treat!
Finaly fade to black👍👍
PLEASE REACT...santana soul sacrifice woodstock 1969 👍👍

Metallica are absolutely awesome live.
Think I've seen them around 20 times now.
This whole Seattle show is iconic, metallica at its peak
Not their peak... Lololol
first time on your channel.. i liked it.. you didn't pause 300 times like the others and your smile while watching the Legends was awesome!!
This was Metallica at their creative and live peak. They got a lot more popular after this, but they never reached this level of creativity again.
I am 54 years old...55 next month...
I think I've seen Metallica 8 times live. From the 80's to the early 2000's.
Amazing live band. I dunno if anyone is better.
Oh no! Such a shame 🙁 why live version?? This song is just too special to be ruining your first time experience like this.
Nah this live version is 🔥
Followed metallica since mid 80s here in Ireland. This song will always be on of my favorites of theirs.
Ability of musical analysis, immensity of knowledge, total passion for music, is a gift for all of us to listen to you and see you!
Nothing Else Matters is a beautiful song of Metallica's. Saw them live in 2023 and it was a 2 night concert and it was fantastic!
i love love Metallica and am enjoying watching your reactions.
Always love your reactions. Please listen (in private) to the studio version, in a dark room with headphones. Now that is a great experience!
Love these reactions and commentary!!!
Unique band singers that I love in those genres:
Bad Brains
suicidal tendencies
Megadeth
Cryptic slaughter
The Accused
Nuclear Assault
Sepultura
DRI
I love watching you listen to music. You distract me from the music
Something fun to do would be to compare an older performance to a recent one. You mentioned their long career and what that can do to a voice, I think it would be very interesting to watch. You could do it in sections like you do now, but flipping back and forth.
Always great to see a "conversion" happen in near real time.... welcome to the club
Bethany, would love to hear your expert vocal analyses and visceral impression of any of the following songs:
"Maps" sung by Karen Oh of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Heroes" sung by David Bowie
"Teardrop" by Massive Attack
Thank you for teaching me more about the wonders and variations and the magic of these vocal artists who create our living soundtracks.
