My son lives in Lake Charles....he and his family did evacuate.....by the Grace Of God they're ok. The rest of my family lives in different parts of the state. I remember right after Hurricane Michael, people were having to sleep in campers & tents because their homes were destroyed. Took FEMA forever to get mobile housing units here. We were without power & water for a couple of weeks, had to drive out of town for gas because it was quicker than sitting in lines of traffic on the highways, then again at the gas station (the ones that were open). Ice and water were hot commodities. No TV, cell phones, internet, etc. for a couple of months. Chainsaws and generators were sounds of music. The trash stopped running because their yards got wiped out. Smell of stench lingered in the air for about a month. Couldn't tell rotting trash from dead animals. Truly a horrific experience. Almost 2 years later & there's still crumbled buildings lying on the ground. I feel for those people in LA & TX. May God bring them the basic necessities, along with peace and comfort.

Yup. The aftermath is terrible.
Looks exactly like what we went through 2 years with Michael and unfortunately it has not improved much in this area (Callaway/Mexico Beach). These people are in for a long haul and sad to say scammers and crooks follow this type of weather trolling for people to take advantage of. Praying for all. Advising folk to be careful.
Interesting how fast prayers go out to God when there's a disaster.
Especially praying for basic needs to be met.

He looks hurt. Something in his neck? Another person mentioned something in one of the comments on here about animals. I know journalists arent supposed to intervene on the story they’re covering (can be seen as influencing the story rather than just reporting it, even if it’s heartbreaking to watch) but I hope they can help lost or hurt animals somehow. Contacting aspca or shelters or organizations? making reports to the right people? Never been through a natural disaster like this to know if there’s even “the right people” to call for lost pets in natural disasters ;( my heart goes out to everyone.
@@amandayoungs8987 He does not have something sticking out of his neck, that's an identification collar - the bay horse in the scene directly after him has the same collar. MANY animal owners that cannot evacuate their animals will do this before a hurricane/tornado/flood to help get the animal returned to them after the storm - or so the body of the animal can be identified. It's MUCH safer for the animal than leaving a halter on, as halters can very easily get snagged on the debris and branches around their fields. Another safe method of ID is to weave identification tags into their tails - but a huge number of animal people opt for the collars.

Udder destruction and 18 wheeler overturned yet the building opened up and ice chest just sitting on shelves. Bless the livestock ....... I cried for them yesterday and look at them today.......Oh Father I thank you for sparring the life of so many and answered prayers. May the Lord bless each and everyone.

I feel sorry for all the people who have no warmth of their home their bed to be in tonight. How can't imagine looking at this and wondering how do we rebuild. My prayers are with everyone.
We lost everything in hurricane Rita in 2005. We lived in Cameron Louisiana and it was completely destroyed and leveled. There was nothing left behind but twisted metal frame stuck in the mud. It was so devastating. I was only 14 and I never really understood until I got older how hard it was for my parents. We had family in Texas so we just stayed in Texas. But it wasn't easy and there was a lot of trauma from it and it was hard letting go. It's been 15 years and it's still affects me because I've never really truly accepted the fact that I lost my home in such a disastrous way. Hurricane Laura brought back all those emotions of such loss. We had family who decided to rebuild after hurricane Rita and now they've lost everything again. It really really messes with you and it leaves a hole in you. There's like the sadness that you always have after You go through a loss like this.

Be careful; there will be gators in the wrong places for a while. We had gators here and there on the coast in Harvey. Y'all have a higher population of gators, or watch where you walk. I know folks will be going back at some point to save what they can or rebuild if they can. I am so sorry; I lost everything in Harvey; not much you can do about a hurricane but sandbag and board up the house and then flee. Be strong.

@@Alejandro-mv1lh They generally don't- but there are deaths by alligators. Not as many as crocs, but under certain conditions they happen. Either way, nobody knows what's in that water since it isn't clear and shouldn't be getting in it. May be debris that can harm you, sewage - plenty of unknowns.
Gators have to eat too and there is a big ape overpopulation in the area.

I personally don't recommend swimming with them. They see your head above water and think you're a duck. With a brain half the size of a human thumbnail, they base choices on instinct.

No. The damaged buildings weren’t “century old relics with aged dried rot timber roofs”. Actually quite the opposite.
I’ve seen multiple buildings that were relatively new and had metal roofs with hurricane straps sustain damage, with some being destroyed.
I don’t know what’s so surprising about this considering this was a high end cat4.

That gust was well removed from the coast and well away from the highest maximum winds.
Let me let you in on a little secret, (the highest winds of a hurricane are located in a extremely small area). Those 150mph winds occurred in tiny radius located over a very low populate area near the coast.
The fact that we’ll built structures like I stated above were damaged is a tribute to the shear power of this storm.
Peter Torbay No, highest *recorded gust*. You really think 130mph gusts could have caused as much damage as this? Same thing with Michael, Charley...etc The highest winds are almost always never recorded because there are not enough weather stations to clock them or the eyewall knocks them out.
As a young child I lived in what I call the Hurricane belt. 😱. Hurricane Hazel ...???? Does any one remember that one? I shall never forget it. It flattened the place on the My part of coast. Now I live an area of Tornadoes 😰. God rescue us ALL.
THIS LAST PRESENT HURRICANE LAURA AFTERMATH IS NO JOKE EITHER. ANY THING WE CAN AS INDIVIDUALS TO “pitch in” will ever be appreciated I’m sure.

well like a "mild" to moderate f3 tornado, , nothing on earth is as strong wind-wise and storm generated (winds and shock waves from blasts like volcanos and meteors are an entirely different story) as an F5, which have thrown thrown 18 wheelers up to 3/4 of a mile through the air and so thoroughly shredded homes and cars, well disintegrated them really, that they were never found. Literally (in some cases they are found, they just can't find any pieces bigger than your thumb). . We are talking about storms that tear asphalt out of the ground and twist rebar like pretzels. 150 is pretty bad, don't get me wrong, but a hurricane strength tornado would be more one of the eyewalls that hit Dade county in Andrew, or hurricane Maria that hit Puerto Rico.
This was a major hurricane no doubt about it and double trouble for anyone who was unfortunate enough to ride it out with Covid 19 cases sure to rise again in the next few weeks. From a personal, human perspective it would be pretty bad to devastating and completely unlike any hurricane experienced before in recent history (I can just imagine what it would be like for settlers in the 17th century to get a cat 4 during the middle of a yellow fever or smallpox epidemic). Literally, apocalyptic. Which may be what this one seems like before the future covid outbreak finishes taking its toll. I hope not. I hope the worst is over for all of ya'll who suffered through this last night and that you can start putting your lives back together.

@Vash TheStampede Yes, I agree. If you add up the costs from each time they have to repair them after a storm, buried power lines would definitely be more feasible, even if the initial cost was higher in the beginning.

No one builds with cement?
The problem with that is cost. The cost of housing would skyrocket. There are one's that build hurricane proof houses, but you are talking 2-3 times the price of a traditional home.
Even if you build with cement it still won't survive a storm surge from a hurricane or the hurricane itself. Never underestimate the power of water.
Franchel Rod in Fort Polk the building are made out of cement & we didn’t hear that much and nothing moved.
With 20 ft storm surges cement and cincrete won't help. There is zero chance of survival in that.

True. When a hurricane hits a small island like Antigua, there's no where to evacuate to. We build our houses strong....but we know that God is in control, so we know to put our lives into His hands.
these places hit are all low income states. Brick and block exteriors add lots of cost. I lived in TX below Houston and the cost was much lower than farther north in TX and definitely cheaper than Cali. The fact that mobile homes are destroyed should tell you how much income is involved.

In the cyclone regions of Australia, they have anchor points where you chain your Rv/ caravan/ trailer to in the event of a cyclone to stop it becoming a weapon. Is this not done in USA?

This wasn't shot in Grand Lake. This was outside of Lake Charles/Iowa off of 397 & parts of HWY 14. The first clip was the weather ball at the weather station near the airport off of Gulf HWY.

It's a definite cat 4. I was in Cutler Ridge, Miami after Andrew. There were trees stripped of everything, even bark, and uprooted. We didn't have big trees anymore afterwards, and it was so flat, nobody could recognize their own neighborhoods. It was all just gone.
@@Callalily666 I lived in homestead during Andrew, I was only 2, but the stories and pictures i've heard and seen from my family are terrifying, the storm was 28 years ago and you can still see the destruction it caused in certain areas.. I still live in Florida, so I've been through 1-4 numerous times and they really don't scare me, but if there is ever a cat 5 i'm gone, no thank you. While Laura seem's to have been bad, you cannot compare this to an actual cat 5 on the destruction scale, its immeasurable.

This area took years to build and everything is wiped out in one night. How and where do you begin to fix it back? Such a tragedy.
In 2005 hurricane Rita destroyed and leveled Cameron parish. There was nothing left. We lost everything. our families and friends lost everything. Most of the people left Cameron but some stayed behind and they rebuilt. I don't know how they had the strength to do that because I would never. The heartache was too much and we all knew eventually someday another terrible hurricane would happen. Took 15 years but another cat three came. And now Cameron's leveled again. But I'm sure they'll still be some people who want to rebuild. It's just crazy I think it's time to move on...

Looking at all these videos, everyone who had a roof built to withstand hurricanes had their house survive. Everyone who had an assembly line doublewide lost their roof. I think a good place to start is to pass an ordinance disallowing prefab homes south of I-10; FEMA recovery funds can be used to construct homes able to withstand hurricanes even if they are modest or simple homes. This also could be paid for by taxing the oil and LNG companies in the area who enjoy a virtually tax-free existence that robs the area of billions of dollars in lost revenue through property and corporate taxes.

In Europe, almost all utilities are underground. I am at a loss to understand why that is not the case throughout the US. I am watching from Middelburg, the Netherlands.
Installing wired utilities underground costs much much more, particularly over long distances. Also storm surge, no matter it’s height, is salt water. Any wire underground would have to be replaced.
@Mara L They don't bother even building solid houses,you can't cry over something made of wood when it fall under an hurricane(I don't wanna be disrespectful but is the truth),less expensive less safe.
It's not possible or feasible to have underground utilities in this part of Louisiana. The water table is too close to the ground surface here. Not to mention the high risk of saltwater intrusion.
Other parts of Louisiana have underground utilities, but it's not feasible here.

Reminiscent to Hurricane Charley damage.
Laura was about the same strength when it came ashore.
i was in tampa bay when charlie hit, 2004 i believe, 4 major hurricanes hit florida that year. every county in the state had damage. but charlie was supposed to come right up tampa bay, they told everyone to get out, i went to orlando and the damn thing went right over us. it only had 70 mph gusts at that point, but yeah, it made a sudden turn up port charlotte.. punta gorda, ft myers, pt. charlotte, wauchula all hit hard, i remember seeing metal in tops of trees, ones that weren't snapped in half...
came back to the bay area and no damage at all, we'd find out thousands stayed, the death toll would have been shocking if that thing came up the bay.
Storm chasing is aftermath, unlike Tornado chasing is real time footage!..Two thumbs up from me...NB ..i derive no pleasures in the miseries of others..Be safe!
Time to bury the power lines. No excuse for having them on poles.
yes there is. Air is a very good insulator and buried lines are dangerous if you hit them with a shovel,. etc. Also, the wires will shrink and expand several feet in each length between poles so the air is the perfect place for them to hang. Also, very hard to work on buried power lines when something goes wrong, and something does often. There is required maintenance on lines, in the air or buried. The voltage in those lines is 10K to 20K to reduce the amps needed. Underground from the pole to your house is fine,( 240 volts ) not transmitting from the plant to your home. ( 10,000 to 20,000 volts )

I had asked an employee of the Salt River Project, one of two local power distributors why the lines could not be buried along the major roads, He claimed the same repair issues. However once you drive around Arizona State University from Sweetwater Drive to Thunderbird Road, the lines are buried, these are high power lines, not the lines typical of serving residential homes. Money and Politics are the issues. Let me suggest something, Start with digging a trench 12 feet wide and 12 to 16 feet underground at it's floor. Build the tunnel in two sections, first section handles power lines, fiber optic and communication lines, second section would handle water and natural gas. The tunnel would be 20 feet wide, 8 feet tall, 2 foot concrete walls on the exterior, and between the two compartments. Non conductive heavy doors. Up top an entry and ventilation room with two foot thick concrete walls, 1 foot thick concrete roof, and a door made of 1/2 inch solid steel the standard 36" x 80" door. Have these buildings about one mile apart near each major road with revetment walls around to prevent vehicle impacts on the buildings. Because they are buried at least 4 feet underground the air in the tunnels would be stabilized by the earth over it only requiring a pusher and puller fans to provide constant ventilation. These fan would be operating on standard 120V current. No heating or cooling required unless workers are present, then a portable air conditioner on trucks can pump cooled air into the tunnel. Hot air rises, so at the buildings above ground the fan would evacuate this hot air through vents near the buildings roof line and keep things dry in severe storms. These up top buildings would survive the worst of weather no matter where they are located. The Interstate Highway system uses this type of building to protect sump pumps for under grade lanes and generators needed to power the 100 foot tall lights. These tunnels would Not be built under the road, but the city would provide a 20 foot wide easement for these tunnels, that is about the width of two traffic lanes! Not much for a driveway to a business to navigate. Then bury all utilities underground in these tunnels. Initially the cost would be high, but maintenance to any of the utilities would be much simpler to manage. I do not know any criminals that can defeat 1/2 inch steel doors without serious cutting devices, the weather could not hurt these tunnels. Even a four foot flood would not reach the vents in the up top buildings. Another type of protection for up top buildings would be earth berm on three of the walls. I would think these up top buildings would survive a category 5 Tornado when built correctly. I am a vet, I was able to see federal buildings owned by the military built to be bomb proof and such. The excuse is money or politics period!!
@@GM8101PHX I went to college for electronics, also worked as an electrician. Nothing you wrote is legit. Nothing. Also, many areas don't have underground to put these lines in. Large Cities for example. Lines get replaced from time to time, poles are the easiest ways to do that. Cost is the biggest factor and why Lines run in the air when the whole system started. Cost and safety are why it has stayed that way. Transformers are what reduce the line voltage from 10-20K down to 240 or 480 volts. They are dangerous so they are put way above ground. Underground wires means underground transformers ( they have oil in them to keep them cooled ) or dangerous wires every block or less coming up from the ground to attach them. Do you want a block building every block to house these transformers ? What about areas that are prone to flooding or have a higher water table ? Do you know what 10K volts does to the human body ? This is life. You want a better system, get solar and batteries and have your own service. Then you can pay to protect it.
