    My daddy was a shrimper in Rockport, TX and I remember him working so hard as this was his livelihood. He provided well for us growing up in the 50s & 60s & he'd let us sit on his boat just like these children when he came home from the sea. God Bless these folks. Now where's the kleenex?

    Good "hardy" shrimp fishermen. So sorry for their loss, but these folks will not let this storm get them down.

    When a big hurricane is showing up, isn't it a good idea to get your boat and just go out to sea or something and just wait till the storm passes, then come back? I'm asking this question from a state of ignorance.

      It's hard to outrun a storm, because you don't really know what's track is going to be. By the time you do it's often to late to out run it. larger ships almost always will take to the sea as you said, but with smaller craft it becomes quite dangerous to be at sea; with 100 + mph winds the seas will be huge and easily capable of overturning the vessel. The old Marina's rule is the 1-2-3, 24-48-72 hr rule. Basically, do to storm era forecasting, at 72hrs. prior to the storms arrival prediction you want to be a minimum of 300 miles away from the storm center, at 48 hr-200 mi and 24 hr-100 mi. Often for smaller craft hiding up a tributary often works quite well is very common. Of course it's all a crapshoot, sometimes it works and sometimes not.

      I was the one in the blue shirt in this video.
      Our plans at first were to go west for safe harboring. The storm unexpectedly changed it's route. At that time we were already at this dock and had no other options. It was bizarre, one of the craziest experiences I've had.

      @@ibooogeymani9380 I knew a shrimper who lost his boat to Hurricane Hugo near Charleston SC riding it out. Something holed his hull, but the pumps were keeping up- just barely. When the Coasties arrived they said "get aboard now or you're on your own for at least a few days, we ain't coming back" so he had to go. And as you know they don't insure wooden hulls....

    So sorry for all the damage from Laura - heartbreaking ... but those boats move .... so why don't all the boaters just boat away to a safer place until after the storm .... like 50 km either way and everyone is safe ... why risk damage and death when you just take your boat up the coast away until the storm passes ...

  • @stevengaskill6515
    @stevengaskill6515 3 роки тому +1

    Probably a dumb question but why don't they pilot the boats down the coast line or up the Mississippi river? would it cost to much in fuel or take to long?

    • @ibooogeymani9380
      @ibooogeymani9380 3 роки тому +2

      Originally hurricane Laura was heading east. So we planned to go to west for safe harboring. By the time we got here, the storm changed it's route. At that point it's too late to change our plans. That's why we had to ride it through.
      (I'm the guy in the blue shirt and IT hat btw)

      Because south Louisiana is a melting pot of black, white, Native American--that means Cajun and Creole and American Indian and sometimes even Spanish (Canary Islands), all mixed up together and shaken since the early to mid 1700s. People unfamiliar with the range of southern Louisiana accents may think white folks sound black or vice versa when really they all sound like the communities of wherever it is they're from.

    Why not move the boats to someplace where the hurricane won't hit? I've never understood why they don't move boats, cars, RV trailers or anything that can be moved. Seems dumb to me. Just stand there and wait for the storm to destroy your equip.

    Pat Robertson quote on natural disasters: "If enough people were praying, (God) would've intervened. You could pray. Jesus stilled the storm. You can still storms." So it was the fault of people not praying enough. Evacuations, shelters, FEMA not needed if people just pray.
