  • I made 8.5 yards of double fold bias tape from a 20.5” square of satin and am sharing step by step how to do this precisely using a little gadget that is easy to obtain. I frequently make self-bias tape for different uses like: finishing armholes, necklines, hems, edges of facings, hong kong finish on seams and the type of fabric plays a huge role in its use and appearance. I am showing practical examples in my own sewing to inspire you 😊

    I love how you show your mistakes that we should watch for while making our items. Showing how to make so much bias out of a small square is very helpful. I like bias tape for many things--but you have shown how you successfully use bias tape for many applications. Mostly, sewing patterns use a lot of facings, which are a pain and not always better. I also. Really like how you use self bias on a shirttail hem. I make a lot of shirts and this will look much nicer.

    Hi Karina, Sorry I haven't been commenting as much. I am not well. This tutorial was brilliant!!! Just wonderful thank you! I'm a quilter and this is a great way to get a lot of bias binding if I need it. I also wanted to mention for assistance with ironing see if you can't find a Tailor's Clapper. It is wood that helps your fabric to become extremely flat. After you iron, you put the Clapper on the fabric it absorbs the heat leaving it really flat. Helps a great deal when making bias tape for e.g.

    I realize this is an old tutorial.. however this is a suggestion for those of us who don't want to mark lines and use scissors. I use my serger with needles and thread removed to cut a premeasured amount. Right before you seam and press the last bit.. Forget the lines because you won't need them. Fix your seam edge at the point of measurement you want: ie: 36mm or 24mm etcetera away from the beginning edge. sew the last seam just as you would have done, press it open. You should now have the tube complete without lines and placed away from edge the needed binding width. Place the material in your serger where your mark/material is attached. Mark on your serger bed the width of binding you want and cut away. this takes moments and is another great way to use a serger.
    Also: do you have a way for us to order the bias binding you get from Peru? Thanks for all your videos.. it's just the best.

    But it doesn’t make actual BIAS. Bias is not on straight grain; it’s on the bias of the material.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  Рік тому

      What I make is cut on the bias of the material (45degree). I never cut the strips on the straight of grain in this tutorial. I don’t understand what you are trying to correct me on.

    Absolutely wonderful. I remember my mother showing us how to cut the continuous bias strips, but she didn't have the tool. I remember her just sewing one edge onto the garment, folding it with her fingers, and sewing the other edge onto the garment. Your garments are beautiful. I'm trying to get back to sewing after a long time not sewing, so I'm in awe of your talent. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Lynn

    Another fantastic and vey helpful video from you Karina. I have a quick question... I watched your older video about using bias binding on armholes, and its a beautiful finish, however, I couldn't see how you join the ends where they meet in the "ring" to close off the binding. do you overlap the ends or do you stitch them together firstly to make a loop?.....
    It would be interesting and very helpful to know this procedure :)
    thank you so much for your wonderful videos.
    Jacqueline :) x

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  4 роки тому +1

      99% of the time I sew the edges of the binding at the underarm seam area to form a loop first and then sew it all on the round to the armscye. I prefer this because it’s so neat. I have bound on the flat and then sewn the side seam in 1% of the cases.... very ugly, I don’t recommend that :)

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  2 роки тому

      I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you are asking me. If it’s for knit fabric, the binding is NOT cut on the bias. It has to be cut on the grainline so you’d just have to make a long piece.

    The smaller bias tape sizes, 6 mm or 12 mm, are good for making fabric ties, instead of fiddling with rouleau loops. Nancy Zieman, a USA sewist on public television, suggested using a straight pin to guide the fabric through the tape maker, but whatever works for you! THANK YOU for such an informative video.

    I am trying to make bias binding on mostly rayon fabric😵‍💫 I should have heavily starched entire piece(maybe even used light stabilizer???) before beginning the entire process. I think it would have stopped the stretching that occurred even when drawing the lines in addition to the stretching when trying to pin the “wonky” edges together…. Live and learn😂 Excellent video. Thanks so much for this tutorial. I have those tape makers, but rarely use them as there is a plethora of different tapes and fold over elastics to purchase here in the states. They are super handy to have, though.

      I can imagine all the variety you have there. I unfortunately don’t and need to adapt and making it from the same fabric is pretty. By now it takes no time and I actually enjoy it he he. Thanks for watching 😊.

    Very nice and thank you for sharing! I don't make my own because it is a slow process but I plan on bookmarking this video for those special occasions! I do have those bias tape making tools too! Thanks again!

      You can mAke a little for a neckline and it’s a start. I’ve gotten used to the feel and look of the one I make and it’s hard to not make some now 😄

    That’s a great technique to reduce the bulk. I’m going to try it on my next project.

    Ooooo! I made my first bias tape today, I'm so proud. It was a lot easier than I thought and kinda relaxing. Thanks for the tutorial

    This is a wonderful video for learning from! I will have to try making my own and finishing garments in bias tape. Have you ever done your bias bound seams on the outside as a detail?

      Thank you so much 😊. I’ve never used bias tape on the outside other than visible armscye and necklines.

    I had my memory jogged in this video. I had completely forgotten how to do this. I like your “thriftiness” of making bias tape out of leftovers and used clothing. Thanks so much!

      I can see this being something that is easy to forget if not done for a while. I think this is fun :)

    Thanks for this video. I usually cut strips and sew each one together because I can never remember the continuous way. I'm going to give this a try. I also love your idea for making binding from an old shirt. I never thought of making binding out of fabrics other than cotton.

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  4 роки тому

      I sometimes make three strips and sew 2 little seams. If I need a small amount only. That’s ok too. I do make a lot when I have a nice square left over. It’s fun. Thanks for watching 😊.

    Karina, thanks for sharing this very useful tutorial! My local stores don't really carry a wide selection of bias tape and only carry cotton. I have several slippery fabrics in my stash and it seems like every pattern I plan on using for them has curved hems.🤣

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  4 роки тому +2

      Here they all have 25mm satin one. I prefer narrower and the ones from the same fabric look so much nicer. It’s all fun too :)
      Thanks for watching 😄

    I have a question; would a biased bound neckline sit better if the bias strip was stretched a little as you sew? I know you need to make the length shorter for knit fabrics but what about woven fabrics?

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  Рік тому

      Controversial. When you flip binding to the inside, the edge sewn to the fabric will be a distance away from the actual edge of the neckline and the further away, the bigger the circumference becomes, so if you stretch the binding, the smaller it will be. End result: puckers. So, no, I would not stretch the binding as I sew.
