PRIMITIVE KITCHEN: Making a Mortar and Pestle with Juncus Hopper
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 бер 2021
- The stone mortar and pestle is one of the most ancient innovations of the primitive kitchen and it is still used today. In this video I explore me creative bushcraft skills to make a stone food processor using materials I find in my immediate area. With stones, stems, some physical effort, and a lot of patience I manage to create a functional Stone Age food processor with some resemblance to what the local natives could have made.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
I do. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share exactly where I go.
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently do collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.

It's getting real!
@@ChadZuberAdventures The next time you go to Jordan, you can visit the Black Desert. The most interesting part is located in the Governorate of Mafraq. There are very interesting ruins and geoglyphs there, dated 8,500 years old. They can only be seen from satellites from the outer space and high altitudes (planes, drones and helicopters) and they are awesome as the lines of Nazca in Peru. Archaeologists don't exactly know nowadays what they represent. These ruins really represent embryos of several species in different stages of development and will be able to shed light on the origin of the human being and our planet. When it will be officially confirmed by biologists, this discovery will change the way we see ourselves and the world, they will constitute a destination number one and be a delight for the eyes. Activate the subtitles in English: ua-cam.com/video/rikVfTbX2Mo/v-deo.html It contains the documentation with the Jordanian authorities about this scientific and archaeological discovery.

This is one of the channels where I let all the ads play to support this content. Love love love the comfort of watching all these skills that anyone can do to survive. Helps me deal with the stress of living right now. I would love at least part of my year to be committed to learning and honing skills like this, and stepping away from commerce for 2 months a year. @@ChadZuberAdventures hahahaha brilliant 👍
there is an ancient village near my house that has a set of stones, about 60' x 20' and hundreds of mortar holes in it. Each hole about 4" to 8" deep. They must have lived in this village for many generations. I believe they were processing acorns in them among other things
In Israel it is not uncommon to stumble upon this on a hike or in the Forrest behind your house!
@@esthergerlitz2359 I was in Israel a few years back, everywhere you look, there are signs of ancient civilizations and time periods
Wow! I'm sure those mortar holes were used for centuries. So amazing to imagine what life may have been like then.

A real Tarzan. Very impressed. If I was in California I would be living in the outdoors because I could not aford California's high cost.
I hear you! Many years ago I lived in a car. There are so many people living in tents or cars now.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Fellow Californian, Chad. I can’t tell you how your videos give me relief. My girl couldn’t figure out the appeal and often wondered why her boyfriend wanted to watch nearly silent videos of a fit, shirtless guy willingly trying to escape the rat-race. I’d look at her and say, “It’s hard to explain.” Lol.
Love that you took the time to show us how to do the weaving! Thanks Chad!
My pleasure

Hi Chad, hope you're well!! Wow, you certainly have some patience to make that mortar and pestle!! It's fascinating to watch you at work with different things! The one thing I would love to learn is basket weaving!!
Absolutely love the long hair, it suits you too!! 😍
Basket weaving is very satisfying. Most of all these projects require a lot of patience. It often takes me several days to complete a project.

Yo tarzan moved to the USA 🇺🇸 we are blessed 🙌

Push and twist works better than pounding often, cool video
Not in the beginning. First you need to crush the whole acorns.
You just explained some archaeological finds, including one I found. Mortars of that size are fairly commonly found but they seem too small for use. Your demonstration of how they might have been extended and the reasons for it was fantastic.
If you spread the pitch over the entire basket it would resemble a plastic bowl, and would make it easier to deal with fine meal without it falling through the basketry.
One folly of a grinding wheel made of stone and I am sure this applies to stone mortars.
Is the fact that, little micro stone parts enter into the product. Making it harder on the teeth.
It can actually wear holes in the teeth from the stone in the meal that is made from the grinding.
However, if you have a smooth glass like mortar and which is important, the pestle. It is much harder
to get little stones in your meal.
I have heard this from some people and after researching it more I'm really not convinced that this is true. There are other factors that affect dental health, particularly the nutrients in the food. Most native peoples had very healthy teeth and when they adopted the "modern diet" their teeth rotted and wore down. I think there needs to be more research on this. I'm just not sure.
How do you deal with getting sick out in he wilderness? Btw, I love your vids.
You dont
there are many plants that cure many things. In so ca. we have plants for spider bites, headaches, diarrhea, rashes, cure/stop poison oak, sore throat. many things grow wild in the local mountains
I don't get sick. Nothing serious anyway. I've had mild diarrea but that just seems to go away on it's own after a few days or a week. It slows me down a bit.
Medicinal plants
You rarely get sick out there. It’s human civilization and lifestyle that exposes you to pathogens. In wilderness, unless you stupidly ingest water from a poor water source or something that is potentially poisonous, you most likely wouldn’t get sick. And if you have a hard time locating good water sources or differentiating between edible and poisonous plants then you shouldn’t be out there. I travel the backcountry for months at a time. The only time I ever got sick is when I went into a town and picked up a bug that was going around that town at the time.
Increíble el esfuerzo tan grande para hacer ese mortero amigo👏👏👏💥

I don't know if Chad Likes to do textiles but making clothing from a standing loom with weighted stones for the weave and warp is
interesting. That might be something Chad could do if it interest him. If it were me instead of trying to make holes in stones I'd make
each stone a water drop shaped clay shell and then put the stone inside it and bake it hard with a hole in the top to tie the rope in for
the weave and warp.
I would love to make textiles. I could use them. I like your idea for the weights.
Eita, como eu adoraria estar neste lugar, com essa abundância de pedras. Eu deixaria uma gruta feita de pedras ao Deus Vivo!🔥
