- I begin the day with the intention of beginning to build the new hut. Then nature presents me with an opportunity that I was not expecting and instead I end up preparing a cottontail rabbit for a very primitive lunch. I also make good use of the skin and save the bones for future survival bushcraft projects. There are some graphic images in this video that some people may find offensive so viewer discretion is advised.

Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?

Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 48.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including UA-cam. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.
7:52...notice the large hematoma along the right ribcage, indicative of a high impact, such as sustained by a fall. I disagree with the rabbit hemorrhagic fever diagnosis. The rabbit isn't jaundiced(it is pink, not yellow), and it is showing no signs of bleeding from the nose, mouth, or rectum. Further as the skin is removed, the carcass is well filled out, showing no signs of muscle wasting, which indicates that the animal was not lethargic or suffered from loss of appetite.

You haven’t been outside a lot
there are several primitive techniques for tanning leather. Basically all work with the same principles, regardless of whether the leather to be worked is from mammals, reptiles, fish. This technique in enjoying with the animal's brain oils is ancient, it's not the one that preserves it for the longest time but it works well. This technique consists of boiling the brain with water, transforming it into a homogeneous soup, this mixture must be rubbed evenly over the entire leather, then the leather must be rolled up and left at low temperature for at least 24H, where it should be ready to be kneaded and taken to be smoked. In the region where you are there are oaks and their bark has a lot of tannin, which is ideal for leather tanning.
Oaks and hemlocks have high concentrations of tannins, perfect for tanning when you boil the bark in water.

@@rickmortyson4861 hunters are necessary (where I live at least and I do not include game hunters in this). There is wild horses in a nearby county but they are protected due to being on a large reservation. Well, their grasslands are fucked and they’re all skinny af. I’m contrast, the state has a deer license program to keep nature balanced

Not that he needs me to tell him, but it was wise of him to use it for soup (boil it) as that is the best way of any cooking method to kill off most potential bacterial or viral threats and still keep the meat edible. Simply cooking the meat over a fire would either result in insufficient cooking time to kill most threats, or result in burned meat while trying to cook it long enough to kill threats. Stews and soups are always the safest way to eat any wild game thanks to the extensive cooking (though even then, it is still not a guarantee of safety.. but it is by far your safest option in cooking methods).
Not only that, but cooking in water, making soup, retains most of the nutrients compared to other cooking methods.
I can't remember where I read it, or when exactly it was, but during war time, soldiers were given a pot and told to cook their meat and not to burn it on a fire, to preserve the nutrition. I suppose there is a reason why the water used to cook tastes to yummy afterwards 😅
@@serenity963 No burned meat which is wasted protein. No fat dripping off into the fire which is wasted calories. Fat and minerals from the marrow are extracted by the boiling water, although it would help to break the bones up a bit. Everything is sterilized as well as possible. Consuming the hot liquid also helps keep you warm in cold weather. Plus it's delicious.
@@serenity963 iirc the water tasted good coz the nutrient including the fat are preserved to the water. Which is just like boiling the chicken, the water simply become broth. Broth itself can be used for other stew, or just consume it right away. Cmiiw

Thank you! Yes, I plan to use the bones probably for fish hooks. They are really small so I don't think they will be useful for much else.

I’ve read that a dead animal is generally edible if it is fresh and well cooked. The modern human these days has such a weak system that it can’t handle a few bacteria.

When braintanning, it will make the hide much nicer if you "flesh" it by scraping the fat and membrane off the actual leather grain before braining it.

Oh, it wasn’t Mark Twain. “Necessity is the mother of all invention” goes back to at least Plato. Your variant, though, is first attested in Roger Ascham’s book on archery, Toxophilius, from 1545, which says:
"Necessitie, the inuentour of all goodnesse."
I've read also the quote you wrote but I found the Mark Twain quote also in several places. I can't say for sure because I wasn't with him when he supposedly said or wrote it.
If you don't want the hide to dry out, try using some oil. It would be pretty cool if you can make some out of the plants in your area

Fantasies of starting a tribe with a couple good friends. The old days must have been amazing. Out in the wild, living life how it’s supposed to be lived. Hearing stories about animals that you can only see with your two eyes because tv and the internet doesn’t exist. All the spontaneity and mystery and awe is dead in this modern day.
There are pros and cons, personally I’d prefer back then, but at least nowadays we’re more educated in certain aspects.

Hey Chad, you need to scrape the inner layer of flesh off really well from the inside of the rabbit (look at stone age scrapers). It will raise the grain and allow the brain to penetrate, otherwise it'll just sit on top. Where buckskin has the benefit of being able to be scraped and worked from both sides, obviously with a skin you only have one. It's much harder to get it pliable, getting the leather part thin will help, a well mixed saturating brain tan which you'll work skin side until dry, followed by a light smoke. Not sure I would have used the rabbit but with such limited resources I get it.
You are right, you must clean the leather well, leaving no grease, to soften the leather it must knead the leather and then smoke it. At the end of the whole process, he can use that plant that serves as a soap to wash the leather well, which will prevent it from having a strange smell, to be very soft, just apply a vegetable oil or animal fat.
@@massacinzenta1042 Yes, some yucca with its saponins to degrease is a good idea, maybe after scraping as well as afterwards. If fat is all over the collagen strands and fur, the process won't work, when it's clean the brain and smoke can get in there. I thought of animal fat too, but I don't know where he'd get that considering most of the animals he'd have easier access to would be fairly lean. He may be able to purify some fish oil (if he can catch them!) enough so the skin wouldn't stink but it's not essential....

Podrias intentar quitando todas las membranas internas de la piel, mezclar el cerebro con agua tibia y untarlo solo en la parte interior de la piel (la que va pegada a la carne y previamente limpiaste de membranas) dejas que la piel absorba los aceites del cerebro, (yo creo que con uno o dos dias esta bien para el tamaño diminuto del conejo) revisándola en busca de signos de putrefacción (esto puede ocurrir si quedaron restos de carne o grasa en la piel) si hay signos de putrefacción algo fallo en el proceso, si no continuas estirando la piel para romper las fibras de esta y se suavice (es un proceso algo tedioso) por ultimo le puedes untar algún tipo de grasa o aceite para mantener la piel humectada y no se vaya a resecar y romper. Aclaro que solo e curtido pieles con alumbre, el proceso es muy similar solo cambia el ingrediente activo de preservación, suerte Chad y cuidate c:,

Yeah from other videos I have seen of tanning hide, people first scrape the hide and then apply the brain. It's then softened and such, and finally smoked to remain waterproof.

The fat will only make it harder for the brain to tan the skin unfortunately, getting all the fat out of the skin (degreasing) is one of the most important steps in tanning to this day. The fat would be best left for eating, since it's very nutrient rich and also tastes super good

I breed rabbits for this purpose and found it more efficient to start with the legs by hanging the rabbit by the legs separately, small cut around the "wrist" and working your way down to the belly. When you get to the belly-region, the skin can be pulled down like sweater. With this method you'll need a more stable/non-mowable equipment. Also, the method I mentioned is probably for a bit bigger rabbits. Anyway, you succeded with your goal and credit to you for that, sir. Now that you found rabbits in the area, have you considered making traps/snares to catch more? Rabbits have a tendency to be very productive and in those conditions a she-rabbit will breed two-three times a year.
