  • My review of the Fujifilm X-S10 camera. Mostly my thoughts after using for three weeks. Features, ergonomics, what I loved, what I didn't like, sample images, and a review of the camera. Fujifilm X-S10 is here: geni.us/Vw15h4X. ALSO: When talking about XT3 being about the same price, I am assuming a used copy. Newer XT3s are still more expensive.

Very good and balanced review. I got my X-S10 back in January, after spending a lot of time evaluating options, including the X-T3 and X-T4. I would also have preferred the “traditional” (non-PASM) dials, but I quickly adapted. When comparing with the X-T3, important to recognize the big value-adds of both IBIS and the flippy screen, as well as the smaller profile and weight. When comparing with the X-T4, for me the smaller profile and much lower price for 90% of the features outweighed the battery and twin SD card question. As usual, trade-offs are involved, taking into account use cases and as well as subjective preferences. On one detail you raised as a concern for you: the focus point can be re-centered by simply pressing the “Back” button next to the screen - no need to go into menus or manually move the point via the toggle.

What I really like about Fuji, and what they completed by introducing this camera, is that they offer about four different shooting experiences with almost the exact same technology. And you just get to choose what you like best. DSLR-style: go for the xs10. Retro-SLR style: xt4. Rangefinder ILC: xe4. Rangefinder fixed: x100v. And there's just tiny compromises with each model because they use the same image processing technology. It's a great approach.

I LOVE the X-S10. It is quickly becoming my favorite camera. The only three things I don't like 1. battery size 2. The exposure compensation dial won't lock and I constantly bump it 3. Weird exposure fluctuations while on auto ISO. Honestly though I bought it because of the deeper grip, size and lack of dials, it had a similar layout that I'm accustom too with other camera systems. I gravitate towards this camera more than my MUCH more expensive full frame setups.

It was a great review...but of course you could do this. It’s a software thing and ever since the first X camera Fuji has allowed people incredible customization options to make their camera and their menu exactly as they’d like it. The reviewer should do an overlay to correct this area of the review.

Being used to my dust and weather sealed Pentax kit I pondered for a long time over the choice between the weather sealed X-T4 and the unsealed X-S10 before deciding the X-S10 fitted my hand so much better. I was pleased to see Chris mentioning using the camera so much on sandy beaches without any worries; he obviously has confidence that it can stand up to it.

This is why I respect Chris. This is a balanced review without getting too emotional and bashing the XS10 and calling Fuji selling its soul. I share the same sentiment with Chris that the retro dial is what I love about my XT4 which the most important reason that I choose Fuji.

At last! Really great, honest and no BS review!
After 20+ yrs in photography, I stopped few years ago. I have sold all my Fuji gear (xt3+lenses) and found that I am free of all the customers related problems. 😂😂
And now, I have decided to go back (wife sad that I'm grumpy without camera) and called my fujifilm supplier. X-T4 is too much for me, but this little nifty Xs10 was giving me some thoughts and after your review I have take a decision! Thank you for that! Cheers from Slovenia!

Informative and honest as usual! Thanks Chris. As you say, it's horses for courses. I'm not a pro. As an enthusiast, my weapon of choice is the XT4. However, I got this as my second camera so that I don't have to change lenses all the time. It is so light, I don't even notice it on my black rapid street. For the times I reach for it, the battery life is not an issue. Bonus, there is no difference in image quality.

Thanks again for another great, informative, and candid review. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more of your future reviews. I have been a very long time (from 1976 to 2018) Nikon slr and dslr shooter and remains to be an advance amateur at best. Never feel comfortable with Nikon dslr and eventually switched to Canon mirrorless. While I am quite happy with the Canon mirrorless, but I always missed the old Nikon film camera retro control feel. I am always aware of the Fujifilm brand and I decided to get it as a second camera all because I watched a lot of your Fujifilm UA-cam video as I honestly believe you have done all the heavy lifting for me.
I was considering the X-T3/X-T4 vs the X-S10 and they all have one thing in common: NOT MADE IN JAPAN. This is a deal breaker for me; I will buy one made in Japan if I buy a Japanese camera or car like the Canon R6 which is made in Japan. For this reason, I ended up having the least expansive one out of the three, X-S10. Unfortunately, after placing the order 3 weeks ago, it has yet to come because of big demand or short supply?
If I end up liking it, I will wait for the X-H2 which should be made in Japan, I hope!
    Above is all personal thoughts.

Great review, definitely convinced me that this is a camera I need to look at.
I've never been attracted to the the Fuji retro aesthetic and I like cameras to have a good grip. But as you say, other manufacturers are neglecting APS-C and trying to force us all to FF and I'm not sure I want to go there. This product is a smart move by Fuji.

I own an XT3 and I took the XS-10 as a second lighter end cheaper body sharing the same batteries and optics while bringing XT4 like video features in a light and compact body. I indeed assigned the focus mode to the button next to the viewfinder. It is not weather sealed but I rarely shoot in the rain. I realy enjoy this combo.

  • @KarolLubiejewski

To center the focus point you just press DISP button once :)
I like your review Chris (and I like all your videos, I learned most about my X-S10 from your channel , even if you rarely/never referred to this camera model) and I like my X-S10 a lot.
I believe the reason for most of the complaints (not yours particularly but in general in other reviews) is because reviewers compare it directly to the X-T4,/T3 and I mean software and ergonomics here because when speaking about hardware differences, there is no doubts that X-T4 is more advanced and X-T3 is just different. Most of the settings/actions you set in X-T4/T3 you can also have in X-S10 but sometimes you just trigger them with different buttons combination and center the focus point is one of the examples. Moreover I can even see some button/dials advantages X-S10 has over his bigger predecessors once you understand what you expect and how to use them.
Anyway, thank you very much for all your hard work and looking for more ;)

I really love your reviews and am a big fan of your channel - and a X-S10-user! I love that camera because it is small and full of advanced technology - and I also struggel with the missing feature of recentring the focus. So I turned to the great people of the Fuji Support in Germany and they also confirmed that the feature is missing on the X-S10. However, when you move the joy stick and then press Disp/Back the focus is recentrallized back again. Not the feature we all love from the other Fuji Xs but you can get use to it. Keep on your great job!

I upgraded from an X-T3 to this and I *love* this camera. The PASM dial is just quicker to use without fiddling with the top dials on the X-T3. I wish other fuji cameras had it! - and the IBIS is game changing for video. I agree about the focus dial though, I set it up to be swipe up for focus mode and swipe left for changing the focus options for the selected more, it's not as good as a dial but it's good enough. I prefer this to the X-T4 except for the battery life.

Always shot Aperture priority before, started that way with the PASM dial here. Soon moved to manual exposure with front-dial aperture, rear-dial shutter, joystick ISO, viewfinder histogram & peaking-big improvement! I see the point of an ISO dial, but I like having all the exposure controls in my right fingers.

I own and really like both an X-S10 and an X-T4. I use the X-S10 more when I’m shooting casually for fun, and the X-T4 more (with an added grip) when I need weather resistance or I’m working on a tripod.
Since I don’t change the film sim that often, I put the autofocus mode on the left unmarked dial. It really is just as quick and easy as the front mode switch on the X-T4. (The film sim control is now a swipe left on the screen.)

Thanks for a very informative and honest video. I'm considering an X-T4 vs the X-S10 as an upgrade from my X-T1. What I love about the X-T1 is that it is light and so easy to carry around as well as the traditional style dials on top. With the X-S10 it seems very portable and light but it doesn't have all of the traditional dials on top. However for me portability is really important (I usually take photos when cycling on long 100km+ with the camera slung over my shoulder) so I think I will go with the X-S10 and possilby the XC 50--230 just because that lens is so light. While I really love the looks and all the features of the X-T4 my impression when holding it was just too much of a step up in size and I probably wouldn't be throwing it on my shoulder as easily.

  • @Sukesh22
    @Sukesh22 3 роки тому +9

For anyone confused on which kit lens to choose,If portability and lightweight is the important factor choose 18-55.The extra reach of 16-80mm is not worth the extra weight and slower autofocus. After using 16-80mm for 2 months,I can definitely say it doesn't balance well with xs10 for daily carry,it is front heavy.
As Chris said about the focus mode switch,I too feel the same way, despite not using xt3 or xt4.

Revisiting this video for the billionth time and I think I'm gonna get one this summer as a secondary camera! I absolutely love my X-T3 but the lack of a flip screen and IBIS makes it really hard to shoot vlogs or film myself outside! I also wanted a b-cam for secondary angles or top-downs and this would be great for it as I wouldn't need 4k60! I really want the X-T4 but it's just way too expensive especially in Canada! So I think the X-S10 would be the perfect secondary camera to pair along with my X-T3! Gonna take some time getting used to the dials and the lack of the focus mode dial is gonna drive me nuts but I'm excited for it! Thanks Chris for another awesome video! 😁

I swaped my XH-1 for XS-10. IBIS+The Best Sensor+Price+Grip = ideal combination to me. I'm not a Fuji-guy so I'm absolutely OK with loosing the dials. Although I get what you mean - those dials really provide some unique shooting experience, I'm glad I had and tryed it on my XH-1, but I can't say I really miss it :-) My biggest concern with the XS-10 in comparison to XH-1 would probably be a smaller viewfinder. The one on the XH-1 felt premium indeed, it was a joy to use it.

Great video and love your enthusiasm. I own both the X-S10 and X-T3 and love them both however if I was only allowed to keep one I would keep the X-T3. I only shoot stills so I don't need the vlogging aspects of the X-S10 so purely on that basis I'd keep the X-T3.
That being said, they have slightly different use cases for me and as a travel or 'leaving the house quickly' camera I will grab the X-S10 every time.
I also customised as many buttons as I could do replicate my X-T3 layout as much as possible - the main one being changing the top left dial to change ISO which has been great for me.

This is my first interchangeable lens camera. When deciding which fujifilm to get I chose the xs10 because I had no experience with the other cameras in the line up and realized that it being different would not bother me. My main interest being macro photography, I wanted the option of ibis available to me for those days when I drink too much coffee. Being on a tight budget, I can only afford manual focus lenses right now so the lack of the focus switch is a non issue for me. The only issue I have is that in mf I can't assign the front dial to iso. I see no reason I shouldn't be able to do that. The dial in question changes function in other modes, so I don't understand why it's a problem. Hopefully Fujifilm addresses it in the next update. I love this camera. Fujifilm has convinced me of their dedication to photography and photographers of all levels.

  • @dougmapper3306

I set up back-button focus (on the "AF ON" button) so that a press is "single," holding it down is "continuous" and if you don't press it at all you can manual focus with the lens ring. I set the ISO button to select the AF area/tracking and it might actually be faster to operate that way than the Fuji focus mode lever. My blank dial on the left is now ISO instead of film sim which is more in line with Fuji tradition as well, though you have to look at the screen because the dial is unlabeled.
I think it also saves some battery life to not have it toggled to "continuous" all the time and instead have it active only when you're about to shoot. Turning OIS off on big lenses also helps with battery life on this model; with the IBIS you really don't need lens OIS unless you're over maybe 120mm or shooting exposures longer than the "reciprocal rule." It does look hilarious attached to the 100-400.

Great stuff as always! A video idea I’d LOVE for you to do someday would be a breakdown of Fuji’s camera lineup explaining the major differences between them and what they’re intended audience is supposed to be. Nothing super detailed just something like, “This is the XT-4: this is Fuji’s flagship APS-C body meant for pros, this is is the X100v, this is more of a street shooter, it’s mean to be a pocketable, carry around, daily camera. This is the XPro-3, etc, etc”. I sometimes get confused what all the different models are and why they exist, etc.
Anyway, just a suggestion. Love the channel!

This right here is a good suggestion.
I'm considering jumping ship from Sony because I'm tired of spending so much time in Lightroom and Fuji's jpegs are fantastic. But holy hell do they have a lot of models with desirable specs/traits scattered throughout. So hard to choose which one.

I bought a used XT-2 a few months ago, and have no intention of buying a newer model. But I thought I'd watch this video anyway. I'm glad I did, because I did not know about the double-tap of focus joy stick to re-center the focus point! Thanks!!

I love the X-S10! And prefer it to my X-T4 (shocking!) I like the small size and weight, custom settings on the Or-pasm dial, and IBIS. My favorite walk around camera. (note: since I don’t do video, those concerns don’t apply) IMO, you are 100% correct about the click-to-center the focus point! However, the focus touch pad feature offsets that drawback. Thanks for your continuing fun and informative videos.

I have the XS10 and I'm sure I would prefer the XT4 a little bit more but for the money the XS10 is great. Also a little tip - you can assign ISO function to the knob that gives you the film simulations in essence giving you an ISO dial instead just like the XT4 but without markings. So I use the front and rear dials on the right to control aperture and shutter speed and I use the top dial on the left for ISO and everything's nice and manually controlled with the physical dials

Spot on review,. I got this after owning an XT3 but sold it and bought an XT4 after a month. The lack of focus switch, tiny battery and evf, poor shutter sound, and hissing IBIS, not to mention the pasm dial didn’t work for me as a long time Fuji user.

I got an xt3 last holiday cause the price was much better, with all the glowing reviews of the xs10 at the time I always wondered if I made a mistake. Thanks for this honest review because I love my xt3 and while I wish it had IBIS, it’s clearly a superior hybrid device to the xs10 for my taste

I've been waiting for your review before deciding whether to pull the trigger on this one. I have the X-T3 for (mostly) stills and was thinking of the X-S10 for (mostly) video, primarily based on the fact that I would not have to get a new battery form factor. Based on your comments though it seems that getting the X-T4 might be the better choice for me and just dealing with having to carry two different batteries formats. I'm also partial to the weather sealing on the X-T4 anyway.

coming from a nikon user, i find x-s10 super easy to use and i didn't have to run around figuring things out. I think x-s10's goal is for photographers like me who got used to other systems such as nikon. And because of it i got curious how does it feel like to use a "classic" fujifilm camera where you have to manualy set the dials. If i could, i would buy myself an x-t4 next just so i can experience that "manual dial" thing. as always, great review, thank you!

Hello, I already own an S 10, regarding pressing the joystic twice, it is true, (activates the focus point type) but you can achieve the same effect to place the focus point once in the center when touching the screen in the center and the focus point will follow this command and immediately.
In general, a great video, (as always) which cannot be otherwise, because the camera is great.

I'm completely agree with all of your reviews of the x-s10. I just received mine 2 days ago. My use are mainly photography and not movies. For AF mode, I compensated for the lack of a focus mode setting button like the X-T3 offers by setting the AF button to MF/AF_S/AF_C focus mode. And the shutter is set to half-pressed AF with PRE-AF off.

I was so excited when this camera was announced. I bought it and it was a huge let down. I sent it back due to the dials and focus mode switch. They lock out the dial settings so you can’t configure like a Sony. Also has some bad autofocus in video mode but none of Fuji’s are top notch in this category. I am coming from a xt2 which is way better and cheaper given he used price on eBay (I did buy my xt2 New Years ago when first released). Good to see an honest review.

Decided to get the X-S10 as my first ILC. I had tried an X-T100 before and it was so uncomfortable to hold! I don't care about the dials, but the lack of a proper grip essentially ruled out every other Fujifilm camera.

January 2021 i bought my first Fujifilm system which is X-T200, i really love every feature and capability from Vlogging ability, Great AF, colour science and especially the lcd res but i got lost and i switched to Sony A7II because i wanna feel Fu Frame sensor for my daily usage. And 1 weeks ago i decide to sell my sony system and wanna go back to fuji because every experience from XT200 still haunt me 😂 i really confused back then, what should i pick XT3 or XS10 (cant afford xt4) 😂, according my usage i definitely go to XS10 but just like u said, i think every fuji user love dedicated Ss ,iso and Focus dial. In the end i chose X-S10 because the feature and to be honest in my opinion have a bit advantages from xt3, and love the camera so much 😳 thank you for the review

Great video - and agree with your points......but, as a stills shooter most of those issues just don'tg apply! I don't see any difference in battery life over my X100V or my XT3 and the single card slot wasn't an issue as I never shoot video. So, take away the negatives that mostly show themselves when shooting video, this is a great camera for stills shooting and the IBIS is a real bonus

This seems like an upgraded X-T100 to me (I know X-T200 exist). That also had the top left dial set to film simulations by default. Having used the X-T100 for a while, I definitely prefer the X-T2 and 3 cameras. I agree with the focus mode dial thing, it’s a fantastic feature! Could never get used to the lack of it on the X-T100. That and the single memory card slot are dealbreakers for me.
I’m curious though, what is the shutter button like? Is it “squishy”, without hard stops at half pressed and fully pressed, like the full frame Nikons and Sony’s have? I love that style of button and I wish my X-T2 and X-T3 had that kind of button.

I love my X-S10. It has better Dynamic Range than my Lumix G9.
However, I have one issue with X-S10. When I shoot videos using Shatter Priority AE in the situation when light situation is changing, X-S10 produces videos with annoying jumpy exposure. If I use Aperture Priority AE, no jumpy exposure occurs.
Is it a known issue of Fuji Cameras? How about X-T4?
    Thank you in advance.

I got my XT4 when this was released and I chose the XT4 finally because of a few simple things. First, 4K60, which I just keep on all the time. I’m not a videographer at all, but in 2020 having the option to crop and slow down the videos is great! Secondly, I like the dials better in the XT4, and thirdly, I just like the retro look of the XT4 better.
Plus, I already have 5 lenses for the system, and adding this body isn’t a huge additional investment.
I still wish Fuji releases a 1” sensor camera like the RX100VII. In that case I’ll just use that and the X100F. It’s the perfect combo for the casual shooter with high image quality demands. Until then, the XT4 is great.

Exactly my concerns, as I took it in my hand. Where the hell is the autofocus switch? But I'm also missing the ISO wheel. Hopefully Fuji brings a X-H2 with such a hand grip, a joystick and 4 direction pad. And please no PSAM. I like to work with all the wheels. But would prefer the C modus instead the Q-Menu which I don't use on all my Fuji cams (X-E3, X100F, X-T2, X-H1 and X-T3)

  • @bardofhighrenown

As a new photographer, I went with the X-T3 because I liked that the exposure triangle was always visible to me. the PASM dials always are incredibly opaque to me. I'm not sure what I can/can't alter, what is locked off and what is automatically adjusted by the camera. I think it's actually more work and less helpful to learn a PASM dial than it is to learn the exposure triangle. I really wish the X-T3 had the in body stabilization though. Can't have everything I suppose.

Agreed on choosing the X-T3 over X-S10 if price is almost the same. Losing the 4 directional buttons, no WR and smaller EVF is a no no but the grip on X-S10 is great!
