  • I’ve been using the Fuji X-S10 for about a week now and here's a look at how I feel about Fuji's latest camera. This isn’t an in-depth review of all the cameras details and features or a technical break down image quality or a comparison with other cameras. Instead, it’s an overview of how the X-S10 compares with the X-T4 and X-T30 for shooting landscapes and video.
    Thanks to the team at www.shopmoment.com for getting me the camera for review. If you're looking for photography and film-making gear, check them out.
    If you’d like to join me for a landscape photography workshop in Italy, Norway or Iceland next year I’ll be co-leading groups there in 2021. Check my website for more information www.andymumford.com/workshops/

    I've been watching hours upon hours of videos in preparation of buying my first camera. The information in this video was concise, informative, and well layed out. Also, your photo examples frankly blew me away and clearly illustrated your skills in both photography and post production with lightroom. That being said, you're one of two photography/camera channels that I've subscribed to and I look forward to more of your content. Thanks

    Thanks for this! I really appreciate the practical examples for sharpness , DR, and IS. I'm definitely sold on this sensor but am desperately torn and wish they made a camera with the T30's dial system but the IS, grip, and flip screen on the S10...

    Superb review and comparison Andy. Coming from a Sony A6000, I really won't miss the retro dials, although having them would be nice going by how popular they are. BTW, I wanted something that can be used for videos and the occasional stills. Have booked the S10 and expect it to be delivered before the end of the year. However, I was mighty impressed with reviews of the E3 and the minimalistic design it is based on. Hoping that the rumoured E4 will have vlogging friendly features and that we have some confirmation before my S10 arrives.

      Glad you enjoyed the review. Indeed the X-E cameras feels a little like Fuji's forgotten line, as the X-E3 was essentially the second generation of Fuji cameras (same sensor and processor as the X-T2, X-T20 and X Pro 2, and the whole 3rd generation of Fuji cameras seems to have passed it by. I've not heard anything beyond the rumours, but I suspect we'll see it before the X-T40

    This is my third video I viewed from Andy and I can see I will be watching many more. Great job Andy.
    After much exploration into mirrorless and then APS-C vs Full Frame I found the image quality of the XS10 excellent. I am retired Designer and the Fuji was impressive for my needs which is an everyday camera and a travel camera. I enjoy hiking and taking stills and wanted a lightweight and smaller system. The Fuji checked the boxes and has a nice portfolio of lenses. Not having owned a Fuji before (my only reference was shooting color film with Fuji in the 70’s ) so the button functions are not an issue. Plus the XS10 allows you to change the function of buttons should you wish. The ergonomics are excellent. With a Peak Design wrist strap
    and 6 stop IBIS, shooting hand held is very possible even when your body is in an awkward position. With two zoom lenses and a smaller bag hiking will be much more enjoyable. Looking forward to my next trip to Alps and getting more proficient with the XS10.
    I would say the Fuji is the MINI Cooper of cameras, and if you ever drove one you know what I mean.

    As always, your detailed description of the new camera coupled with great examples as well as great b-roll to make the video more cohesive amounts to one of the best, if not the best, examination of the camera that I have seen to date. Also, the landscape images are of course stunning. I have and have had several X-variants as well as the GFX bodies and lenses and, although this is a bit off topic, I would like to add my pitch for Fujifilm to apply their evolved IBIS technology to a reimagined GFX body. I’m thinking of something along the lines of the 50 megapixel bodies, with traditional ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation dials (think streamlined GFX 50S) with IBIS. Also-and this includes the GFX100 which I also use- I wish Fujifilm would revisit button, dial and joystick design, making the buttons and joystick larger and more prominent and making the dial movement more positive. Finally, I would like to see the back dial moved to the left, allowing more room between that and the thumb rest, in addition to keeping the Q button out of the way of accidental presses. I love the appearance and design logic of the Fujifilm bodies and I think Fujifilm would realize increased market share of the physical layout and the tactile nature of the controls were revamped, in keeping with some of the mirrorless and DSLR competition.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment Ben, glad you enjoy the reviews. It's a while since I've used a GFX camera, but I do remember the button layout was sometimes a little odd. There are rumours of Fuji putting the 100mp sensor into a body more like the GFX 50S, which might be interesting, and I'd guess with the advances they've made in scaling down IBIS that we would expect to see that. For sure though, there are going to be more cameras in the GFX line up, and everything I hear indicates that Fuji are intent on scaling down the MF line.

    After watching some of your videos I thought to myself that with the quality of your work and your love for Fuji cameras you deserved to be in their photographer's family. I went to the Fuji site and much to my surprise (or not really), you are! You deserve it. You're a hell of a photographer! I'm Portuguese and it's good to know you live in Portugal. I've moved from Madeira Island to Porto, 15 years ago, and returned to the island last year to focus more on hiking and reignite my love for photography, after so many years stopped. You're inspiring!

    • @AndyMumford

      Thanks so much for the comment Pedro. Yeah, I've been a Fuji Ambassador since near the beginning (well, X-T1 days), they are lovely people at Fuji, and of course great cameras. I've never been to Madeira, but it's been on the list since I visited the Açores a few years ago, and I notice that Madeira is becoming more and more popular for photographers, so I'll have to check it out soon.
      I've lived in Portugal for well over 20 years now...I've been officially Portuguese for more than 5 years, but obviously I was born in the UK and because I do my videos in English people assume I live there, but I actually lived less than half of my life in Britain and left when I was 23.
      Anyway, I'm really glad you find the videos and images inspiring. All the best with your photography

    I loved the retro styling of the X-T1. After many years shooting film on the Nikon F3, I loved the manual controls. Now i really want a second camera to complement the X-T1, mainly for shooting video. I'm torn between doing a full upgrade to the X-T4 versus just opting for the X-S10. Thank you for your video.

      @AndyMumford  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment. I really like the retro styling of the XT1 as well, but in some of their bodies like the X-S10 and X-H2S Fuji are using a different design language, which is a shame. For sure, you’re probably better off with the XT4 is you like the retro styling,and it is a better camera all round

      Completely agree, that’s one of the big pulls for moving to Fuji. If anything, I’d really like my X-T30 to have a dedicated ISO dial rather than go the other way and loose all the dials. I also miss the d-pad that I had on my X100F.

I did a lot of research on the three or four different models around this budget price range and I bought this camera for just walk about stuff instead of carrying my two big NikonD8 50s around which are my landscape cameras, but I just needed something to walk around with and this is the beast that I've invested i. when xs10 was first launched I dismissed it because of all the fun I've had with the top dials and aperture ring after years of shooting Pentax (also I like to have WR). Shooting with screen I still prefer the tilt over flip-out screen but then again, the camera and screen are small enough to cradle them in two hands quite comfortably. I don't really see why Fuji (or anyone) doesn't make the dials fully re-programmable, all of them unlabeled (possibly with sticker/clip-on labels to put on top of them included in the box or sold separately) - there are 4 dials on the body + aperture ring on the lens, that's more than enough to have them programmed to exposure triangle controls (even with xc lenses) and still have at least one for something else.

    I like reviews like this that focus on usability, image quality etc and don't focus so much on the 'specs'. So another really good vid. from Andy. It was his earlier reviews that gave me the confidence to go Fuji.
    I had an X-T30 briefly as a second body to my X-T4. (I moved to Fuji during the Summer). I didn't get on with the way the X-T30 felt or worked in the hand. The X-S10 on the other hand feels really good. I almost exclusively shoot stills and pretty much always hand held so IBIS is a big thing for me and I shoot using the EVF, not the screen.
    What I also like is the weight. It fits in a small bag with a pouch of filters, 16-80 and 50-200 lenses plus a couple of spare batteries and it is no bother to carry and use all day. The 4 is just a bit more cumbersome. So although maybe designed to attract video shooters I regard it as my 'Goldilocks' camera. It does everything just right. Heck of a lot of camera for the cash.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks so much for the comment Kane, and really glad you found the videos useful. It's also great that you get on so well with the X-S10. I'm leaning more towards keeping it as my second body alongside the X-T4 as well. At the moment i have an X-T3, which I really like, but I've always liked having a second smaller camera like the X-T30 or X-T20 to keep the weight down, and this having IBIS really makes a difference.

      I have both also and the x-s10 is a great companion camera. People seem to think it's the light alternative to the x-t4 for video, but it's really the smaller PHOTOGRAPHY camera. The video specs are much lower on the X-s10, but the photography are the same. I can't think of a difference off the top of my head, except the x-s10 has a flash.

    The ergonomics of the X-S10 are so much better that I rarely use the X-T4 any more, will probably sell it.

    One of the reason that made me upgrade my beloved X-T30 to X-S10 was the autofocus which was not updated in the latest firmware for X-T30. The X-S10's autofocus is the fastest Fuji has to offer and is on par with the X-T4. Also I shoot mostly on aperture priority with auto iso so I don't mind the lack of traditional exposure controls on the X-S10. Lastly the new classic negative film simulation is absolutely beautiful.

I am an amateur photographer (not really interested in the video side), I come from a Nikon D3200 and always sho in full manual and I wanted to step up to a nice mirrorless camera. I wasn't sure on brand and models and I didn't want to spend more tha 850 between body and lens (maybe starting with a kit lens). Would it be more reasonable to try out the X-T200 or the X-T30 (but I'd like the articulating screen) and maybe, if I want to have more quality, sell it to get a better camera or should I go for the X-S10, investing these 150 euros now? Let?s say I'm into basic photographies but often I like trying more complex stuff like astrophotography and high exposures. Thank you so much in advance!

      I wouldn't get the Xt200, it's a little basic, but the XT30 is a great camera. The image quality is the same as the XS10, but of course it doesn't have stabilisation. Really the choice is between which one feels the most intuitive in your hands.

    Hi Andy, thanks for the great review. I am currently looking at both cameras, and trying to decide. How important, and effective is weather sealing in the X T4 (or indeed any camera which claims to be weather sealed)? This is the only issue for me. Not that I take a lot of photos when weather is poor, but taking photos on a beach (salt spray etc..), or any other time you might get caught out in the elements. I am not sure whether spending an extra AUD700 for weather sealing is a good option. Of course the X T4 has other benefits, just not sure I need them. Cheers and thanks for your view.

    Hi Andy, great review. I just watched your review on the 10-24 lens, also excellent. I have used an X100T for a couple of years and want to jump into more advanced stills photography. The X-T3 is my current preference but this is an interesting option. Do the image stabilised lenses give the same level of stabilisation as those in body? Would you say the stills are as good as those you get from the X-T3 as it's the same sensor? Would it make more sense to bite the bullet and dive straight into the X-T4? Thanks Mike

    • @r3vo811
      @r3vo811 3 роки тому

      It all depends on you prefered camera size and if you wear glasses. With glasses, there is no other option than a T3 oder T4. The T30 viewfinder is horrible in direct/harsh sunlight. If you don't need IBIS in camera, get yourself a T3 and enjoy the probably best Fuji camera you can get for your money at the moment. Cheers and have fun!

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  3 роки тому +1

      It's really hard to say, as personal preference plays a huge role but what I can say is that there is absolutely no difference in image quality between this, the XT4 and XT3. They are identical. Stabilised lenses don't come close to in body stabilisation, so if this is an issue, then go with the X-T4. The X-T4 also has the best battery life of any Fuji camera, but the screen is very much a love it or hate it, and for people doing stills, particularly on a tripod with an L bracket, then the X-T3 is a more practical camera.

I predominantly do stills but also want a good video option to venture into videos in the future. Would you suggest the XT-4 or the XS-10? Also are there restrictions in the sense that Fuji cameras do not have a full frame sensor?

    Andy. I'm in the process of moving from Canon to Fuji. I've been researching the Fuji line for about 10 days. My heart says to go with XT4 as the world seems to love it. Logic however wonders if I need to pay that much and if I should consider the XT30 / SX-10 or wait a bit for the XT30II. (I'm in no real hurry) The primary use of the camera is photography... I primarily shoot landscapes often selling prints and canvas up to 40x30 inches. I'm going to assume that the Fuji sensor is capable of producing images that could print that size? As I want the full Fuji experience I'd prefer the dials over the more familiar UI style of the SX-10. As they all use the same sensor, IQ should be equal. I do however prefer to shoot in conditions that most others would prefer to not venture out in. Shooting the beach in wind, rain or snow is a very common occurrence for me. You say you've never had any issues with the non-weather sealed bodies so I'll take that as a good sign. Budget is not an issue, but i'd prefer not to overspend on a body if I don't need to... I could put that extra money into glass. Thoughts?
    Many thanks for your content and reply.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Dave, I've been using the "smaller" Fuji bodies (XT10/20/30 and XS10) as a second body for over 6 years now and I've never had any concerns about their ability to withstand harsh environments. I've used them in waterfall spray, rain, ocean spray, volcanic dust, sand storms, blizzards, down to about -15C and they function fine (although battery life does suffer in extreme cold).
      The XS10 is a great camera, and my current back up to my XT4, but it doesn't really feel like a Fuji camera. The dials and inputs are all different from the XT line, so the XS10 probably isn't for you.
      The XT30 is a lovely camera, and very capable, but if I had one issue with it, it would be with the ergonomics. First off, it just doesn't balance as well with large zoom lenses like the 16-55, 10-24 or 50-140mm as the XT4 does (or the XS10, which has a really deep grip). That makes using it handheld less comfortable. Also, the buttons and dials are smaller, which usually isn't a problem, but if you're shooting in harsher weather and wearing gloves, then it's less easy to change the settings than the XT4.
      With that being said, I would say the bigger body of the XT4 is a better choice, but I would also highly recommend taking a look at the XT3. It's the same body, has the same sensor and processor, actually has a better screen than the XT4 if you don't need the self screen, and only misses the stabilisation..but the XT30 doesn't have that either. It'll also be less expensive than the XT4, so if you can find one, I'd recommend that.

Printing at 100 pixels per centimeter gives native prints of over 60cm along the longest edge, which is bigger than A3 size. The issues that people have with LR and RAF files are only visible at 100% magnification, which is greater than you’ll see A3 prints at, so the prints will be fine. I think you can get good landscape shots with it, but I'd say shooting wide angle, I wouldn't want to shoot above a quarter of a second. I think with care the camera can get decent shots at that shutter time, but it will always be sharper with a tripod. After shooting for a couple of hours, in the IS options, "shooting + motion" and "continuous + motion" were greyed out and no longer available. They were earlier in the day. I can't figure out what setting(s) I changed to cause this to happen. Any ideas? Thanks! Cheers, Steve

      Hi Steven, had a look at this and it's the same with mine. Checked the manual and if you look on p146 it explains that the + Motion adjusts the shutter speed if a moving object is detected in the frame. It also says;
      "+ MOTION has no effect when sensitivity is set to a fixed value, and may also be unavailable at some other combinations of settings. The effect may vary with lighting conditions and the speed at which the object is moving"

    Great review - thank you. I am looking for a smaller easier camera to use to trade from my Nikon D7500 ( which I almost almost only use in Auto, and with an 18-200 lens). I think my biggest concerns are 1. No weather sealing ( more an issue for sand and dust rather than rain) 2. Is there a smallish lens that has good optics similar in range to my 18-200.? Also there are rumours of an XT 5 which may be smaller than the XT 4 - would that be a better choice or overkill given my basic photography skills? ( there is also the new OM 5 - but my feeling that won’t give better results than my iPhone 14!). Thanks again.

      I've been using the X-S10 for well over a year and have used it in some pretty harsh weather (including the desert in Namibia) and the weather sealing isn't a problem. There isn't an equivalent of the 18-200mm for Fuji. There's the 16-80 but thats about it. As for rumours about the X-T5, they're not rumours. It was announced yesterday ua-cam.com/video/zPSqvT37uW0/v-deo.html

Or is the extra image stabilisations, weather proofing, better video, larger sensor etc worth going for as an investment now?

    I am planning to buy my first Fuji camera and switching from Nikon dx format gear. I am more into still photography (landscapes, portraits and street and occasionally videos as well). I am looking at XS 10 or XH 1 for my purpose. Since XS 10 is a newer camera and also have IBIS ( Though different than XH1) but isn't weather sealed and has a smaller body. The prices i am getting locally are almost same for XH1 with a grip with two additional batteries and that of XS 10 ( body only)

      Hmm, it's a tough call. I never loved the XH1 as I found it too big and heavy compared with the XT series, but it is certainly a more sturdy camera than the X-S10. Image quality will be pretty much identical, so really you're looking at which you prefer to use. The XH1 has nicer controls I feel, as I prefer the Fuji dials which the X-S10 doesn't have. So I'd recommend you try and get your hands on both in a shop and see how they feel in your hands. I like the lightness of the X-S10, but the controls aren't intuitive to me after using the XT series

      It really depends on how you prefer to shoot. I don't think either style of dials helps you learn photography as exposure controls are relatively straightforward either way.
