The whole point of the Happily Ever After Potion was to provide a "happy ending" to its consumer so that he could be with his true love. Naturally, a more critical requirement of the potion would be to make both parties as physically compatible with each other as possible. Donkey and Dragon were two completely different species and are very physically (and should be biologically) incompatible. By making them both equine, they would be much more physically compatible.
Thing is, if Shrek would have kissed Fiona they would stay human but Donkey would still have got back into being a Donkey because he wasn't even close next to his wife to kiss her. Donkey was never affected by Shrek and Fiona's love to begin with (which is a bit against what the movie portraits at the end there) so either way he would have got back into being a Donkey. Like you mentioned, the potion only works for both parties once one of the parties have a sip. And yeah, it kinda makes "sense" for this potion to turn her into a Pegasus while Donkey becomes a stallion because they still kinda "based" on themselves but turned into something they can be compatible with.
Maybe she lay her eggs before transforming into a pegasus? I think she was moody because she was about to lay the eggs, and she was constructing a nest, but Donkey constantly bothering didnt help, so she get even more moody,making Donkey leave. She thinks she leave her so she can finish the nest and love him for that,lay the eggs, transforms because she still love him, wait to the eggs to open and then with the babies, go rescue Donkey

Donkeys are able to stand and run not too long after birth but lizards start off running,hiding and eating on their own the moment theyre hatched. And I think some lizards can lay eggs when theyre close to hatching (could be wrong)? So the dronkeys being able to hatch and fly soon after being laid isnt too far fetched

The dragon babies were able to fly soon after being born, but they didnt fly far because of strong currents of air, so probably took them (The dronkeys and mom) a while to fly that distance. Also they didnt lay the egg, and the egg hatch the next second. The ones fishleg hide took then about 3 days to hatch.
A lot of people are saying, "Oh, Dragon shouldn't have transformed, she's already beautiful!" But this is a potion the Fairy Godmother made. She would have transformed Dragon because she would've seen her as brutish, violent, and terrifying. It's like how Fiona, Shrek, and Donkey transformed, even though they were already the best versions of themselves. None of the people affected by the potion fit the fairytale mold, therefore the potion turned them into things that did.
This. Exactly. People are rambling about their "true beauty" but their true beauty doesn't reflect the classical fairytale version of beauty (we need only look at early Disney movies to show that). Not to mention, the fact that the fairy godmother was completely vain to her core
Maybe it's because he FELT he was ugly, or maybe it's because of Fairy Godmother's prejudice on what is good looking & right, since she made the potion. If you think about it, Shrek was pretty good looking for a male ogre. But he had fallen for Fiona, & so even though they were already married he still felt insecure about how her human family percieved him. Even though he had no wish to change his personality, he did wish he was what humans considered handsome & that they wouldn't automatically call him a monster & assume he was going to eat them. If he was human, then Fiona wouldn't have taken permanent ogre looks to be with him & she wouldn't have to have their love put strain on her relationship with her parents. So, Donkey had also been told by humans that he was ugly & unwanted. He wanted to be bigger, stronger & braver like a "valiant steed". Even though Dragon found him attractive, Donkey's mindset was also affected by human beauty & personality standards. Also, on the other hand, the potion was made by Fairy Godmother, who was obviously prejudiced against certain kinds of people. Remember her disgusted statement to Shrek that ogres don't get happily ever afters? She made Fiona be an ogre because she considered them all horrible & ugly. So I think the magic potion puts you in the form that you or Fairy Godmother thinks is handsome & will guarantee your happily ever after, & then it makes the same change to your true love because of course in order to not be judged by anyone, even those who are prejudiced, then you & your mate would have to be of "the same kind", no "mixed" marriages to offend anyone. So, Donkey became a horse & Dragon became a flying horse because even though to some humans donkeys are cute, humans overall still think a horse is far more beautiful & useful than a stubborn donkey.
The potion took donkey's appearance as ugly because that was what Donkey thought of him self. And since Donkey transformed into a Stallion it is fitting that Dragon turned into a pegasus though I would think a masculine or male one.
Personally I don’t think she should have changed since she’s a DRAGON. Dragons are majestic, powerful, and loyal. Nothing is better than that in my opinion!
I feel like one of 3 things happened: Either A, the Dronkeys were eggs, and as such we’re not changed visibly, or aware of the change, B, they were born like mammals and were not.... out.... yet..... again, not visibly changing or aware of the change, Or C, they’d as been born, but didn’t change at all. The potion specifically mentions the person and their true love. I don’t think it would impact their children. Worst comes to worst, Dragon struggled keeping a bunch of fire breathing baby dragon donkeys content and fed while at the time likely being smaller than usual and not as fireproof.
I just had a mental image of a pink Pegasus chasing down the dronkeys and one lighting her tail on fire. Followed by very angry horse tippy taps and a strong urge to not kick her own babies.
I really like the idea of Dragon turning into a Pegasus! It fits with her being a flying mythical creature, and further hints at Fairy Godmother’s strict adherence to fairytale rules.
Well she was supposed to show up during the movie as a talking Pegasus and that would be nice for once seeing her not mute like always but I don't know how was it gonna work to convince her or donkey changed back to their real selves
Boy imagine how she felt, she’s pregnant or has already given birth, her husband is not home, she’s passing trough all the emotional and physical stress and then out of nowhere she just turns into a Pegasus, without knowing why, and was like that for the whole day ( btw, the directors said that they didn’t want to include her because she would have been too OP, but she was in the Pegasus form, just a horse with wings, not a massive dragon anymore, so I don’t get it )

Perhaps that’s also where the “they couldn’t hide her pregnancy” reason comes in; if she appeared in the movie as a pegasus, she would have looked very bloated around the middle, immediately tipping off the audience to why Donkey said she’s been moody, instead of leaving it a surprise with the dronkies at the end.
Actually I did wonder that when I first saw it if it turns Shrek and Fiona human and Donkey into a stallion it's only natural to wonder what it would turn into Dragon into.

Katia Romero that is because the line ‘I’m coming Elizabeth!’ was the character being dramatic, talking to his dead wife, he would do this after hearing something particularly distressing/alarming , so much so you think you’re having a heart attack and could die, so they have pretty much the same meaning, both things shouted when someone feels they could die :)
It is a reference to the TV show Sanford and son. Fred Sanford was always faking a heart attack, and calling out to his wife who passed away years before.

That... makes perfect sense. Shrek went from “beast” turned into a human form because Fiona had a human form. So if Donkey became a horse then it makes sense his “beast” counterpart would be the same form as him but still magical. Cool.
Well, if the potion had made Shrek and Fiona humans and Donkey a stallion, then Dragon being turned into a Pegasus would have made sense. Too bad we didn’t get to see that in the film. Although I think at the time of the trio escaping jail and the final confrontation at the castle, Dragon might have had her children at the time since they had arrived after the party.
I always thought the potion turns you into what you think is beautiful, and therefore turned Dragon into a donkey. A flying pink horse is awesome but imagine the feels if she had shown up as a demure, pretty little donkey. And when asked why a donkey she said "cause the most beautiful person I know is one." It's a little sad to have that headcannon broken now :( Oh well

I feel like she should've stayed the same given she's comfortable with herself and donkey loves her as a dragon. Donkey always had issues with wanting to be a stallion, but we never see dragon wanting to be different
I don’t think the potion changes you and your love into a form you desire, but a more acceptable form by fairytale standards. Fiona didn’t want to change back into a human in Shrek 2, but she still changed back to her old self. If you go by traditional fairytale logic, dragons are hideous beasts meant to guard beautiful princesses and be slain by handsome princes. Dragons don’t live happily ever after, so a happily ever after potion would have had to change her into something else.

I always assumed Dragon turned into a unicorn/pegasus/combination of the two, so I guess this just confirms it. I also assume that the Dronkies were born from eggs, and the reason Dragon was so moody and upset was because she was fill of awkward eggs and close to laying them. She may have just not told Donkey about the eggs in case something went wrong and they weren't fertilized or something, so he wouldn't get excited about being a father only to have nothing come from the eggs. So theoretically, the Dronkies would have remained just that: Dronkies. Because they're not the ones in love with Donkey. Now imagine if Dragon HAD made her way to Donkey and they kissed (or whatever the horse equivalent would be) and remained a horse and pink pegasus. Not only do you now have the confusion of their names being Donkey and Dragon when they are clearly not those things, but now every time Dragon tells anyone that the Dronkies are their biological children, people are going to be giving her the side eye wondering 1.) Who the baby daddy really is and 2.) How Donkey can be so dense that Dragon told him those are his kids and he believed her.
Well the potion is supposed to give you and your love a happy ever after, so it wouldn't make sense to turn her into another species. As the creators confirmed, it turned Dragon into a Pegasus, an equine, because Donkey also was turned into an equine. A noble steed is what Donkey, and Fairy God Mother, would consider to be the more attentive transformation for him as he drank it.
The pegasus was probably chosen because of her wings and still wanting her to fly. But a unicorn pegasus would be pretty amazing too now that I think about it.
i would love a short of dragon making her nest (preferrably with her eggs already laid cuz censorship) then she changes to pegasus, has a tiny freak out, and shows her comically trying to keep her eggs warm while a pegasus. (since the eggs are probably 2/3rds her size) maybe even the eggs hatch while shes still a pegasus and the babies dont obey her because they dont recognize her as their mother. mayhem of child rearing ensues and when the babies are about to cross the final line with pegasus-dragon, she changes back and they realize shes mama. just a thought
Hmm yeh i mean princess fiona was cursed by a witch so she turns into an ogre every night, so they put her in a tower until someone saved her, but where did they get the dragon from, i have not seen any other dragons anywhere in the skrek movies besides her, im curious where she came from and how they actually caught her and locked her up in chains so she wont fly away, ALSO why would they put fiona in a tower over lava, what if it erupted? In Pinocchio, there’s a part where the boys are turned into donkeys, most of them turn into normal donkeys BUT some of them only changed in appearance. I think Donkey was one of those boys. In Shrek the 3rd, Donkey recalls being bullied as a child & getting wedgies, meaning at some point he used to wear clothes, which a donkey wouldn’t.
As with most people responding, my family and I asked ourselves this very question. We had finally decided that because dragons were inherently magical that she wouldn't have been affected by the potion. This would explain why the babies were not affected either. Donkey on the other hand, had to change per the potion. His being called a noble steed in the first movie, was his idea of an improvement. I prefer the idea that there was something more powerful than the fairy godmother. Her whole persona was she had the ultimate power over everyone else. I find it reassuring that there was something more powerful than her.
Honestly, the worst thing about Shrek 2 is how it handles Dragon. She’s just not there in the whole movie and it’s like it completely forgot about her until the end credit scene
It seems more likely to me the Dragon was moody and stand off-ish because she had laid eggs and was brooding them. If she did indeed transform for that one day-----and the idea of her being a pink pegasus was pretty good----the babies would most likely not have been affected, since they would already have been hatched from their eggs. After all, they could already fly when Donkey saw them for the first time, so they had to be at least a couple days old. But it would have been hilarious to see Dragon as a pink pegasus brooding over her newly hatched "chicks".
After considering this question for literal years, there’s several angles to consider. First the no transform theory. Simply put, Fiona didn’t really transform into a new form, as much as she reverted into what she originally looked like before the curse. Whereas Shrek turned into a new form unseen before the potion. This theory follows the idea that the females already exist in their perfect form, with Fiona simply going back to that original form. Since Donkey transforms we can assume that Dragon(Elizabeth) would either stay in her original form (dragon) or go back to her original form (The idea she was cured to be a dragon from some other creature) This would fit, because both the men, Donkey and Shrek become new forms of themselves, whereas their true loves did not take new forms. So if that’s the case, dragon either stays a dragon, or perhaps becomes what she was before. Then there’s the everyone transforms theory. This idea is that both Shrek and Fiona change to a “prettier” form, and thus since donkey changed, Dragon changed. That’s the area of debate most talked out in comments. Pegasus doesn’t seem right. Donkey is clearly still an equine, same as how Shrek and Fiona are both still humanoids. So why would dragon change so dramatically? Sure a Pegasus flies and makes a good match for a stallion, but she wouldn’t resemble her former self, something we see with Shrek and Fiona. That’s why I like a Phoenix, it keeps the fire aspect, and flying, and we know birds are descendants of dinosaurs, which dragon resembles. Another creature I thought of is perhaps a pterodactyl. It would keep her a flying creature, and maintain the reptilian look, while also slimming her down, and bringing her closer to donkey’s size. However I find it hard to think a pterodactyl could be animated to look “prettier” than dragon. That’s why I think Phoenix is the obvious answer. Her face could stay relatively the same, keeping the spikes and frills of a dragon, while making her body a fiery ribbon. Does anyone have any alternative flying reptilian creature they can think of?

A great mythical beast that I love that she could have become is a Qilin/Kirin, coming from Eastern folklore/mythology. In China its usually dipicted as a wingless dragon with hooves and a mane. In Japan it's shown as 'a dragon in the shape of a deer'. It is ranked as one of the most powerful mythological creatures in eastern mythology! (I'm getting most of this from Wikipedia, so take it with a pinch of salt!) Dragon becoming a kirin would harmonize her with Donkey becoming a stallion, while keeping her mythological and draconian identity. While a giant pink pegasus is fun, I feel like its a little too... soft for Dragon. She could also keep mostly to her colour palette or maybe even darker in contrast to Donkey's white coat as a stallion, referring to the fact that normally the two couldn't be any more different.
There is a theory that Dragon is the blond princess in the storybook that is cursed like Fiona but she becomes a dragon at night. The dragon shown in the storybook even looks like Dragon.
my question is, where does dragon and donkey live ? They’d need a big place for dragon to fit. I doubt it would be the castle from the first movie because she’s not chained up now and has no reason to stay there and it’s run down.
Andrew Payne Dragon was not chained up at first, she only became chained up after Shrek made the chandelier fall on her and around her neck and made her get tangled up, so before that she was just chilling there, she had the ability to come and go as she pleased, she must have decided to stay there for some reason, or maybe she was asked to reside there just to guard Fiona.

IMDB Trivia: A couple of kids during a test screening asked Writer and Director Andrew Adamson what Dragon turned into. Adamson said that Dragon turned into a Pegasus (a horse with wings).
Dragon’s a reptile so hiding her pregnancy wouldn’t be an issue she would’ve laid eggs, could’ve even explained it as dragons guard the eggs from their mates out of a need to protect their young at all costs
I think Dragon's most desired, beautiful self would be a Pegasus because Donkey is a different species to hers and during her moody time before laying her eggs of her babies started to have the depression doubt-our-love mood and maybe wished that she would become a Pegasus and Donkey might love her more.

The potion turned a mushroom into a flower and an ogre into a human so it is evidently powerful enough to make its user change species. They probably wanted a more feminine looking animal is my guess.
Pretty sure Dragon laid a clutch of eggs instead of being pregnant, and her moodiness was more the fact she had eggs in development and on the way out. Speaking in terms of animals, I suspect Dragon was trying to nest properly to lay the eggs, but Donkey kept her distracted... Because she is a carnivore, she likely was fighting the urge to eat him on top of nesting. Laying the clutch of eggs, and then having hatched eggs, I can see Dragon being shocked that her babies were suddenly MASSIVE compared to her, and realized she was turned into something, but prioritized her babies before investigating. THEN when the transformation wore off, she took the kids, looked for Donkey, and showed him what made her so moody.
When I was a kid I was always under the impression that Donkey was just sort of tied into the effects the Happily Ever After potion was having on Shrek and Fiona, and thus nothing would happen to Dragon, since she wasn't part of the equation.

1:45-2:00 I think there's a theory out there that states that Dragon has some asinine genes in her and, similar to actual donkey biology, wanted to give birth away from her husband. So even though Donkey didn't know Dragon was pregnant at the time, he did give her the space she needed to conceive as biology would dictate.

Maybe it's because he FELT he was ugly, or maybe it's because of Fairy Godmother's prejudice on what is good looking & right, since she made the potion. If you think about it, Shrek was pretty good looking for a male ogre. But he had fallen for Fiona, & so even though they were already married he still felt insecure about how her human family percieved him. Even though he had no wish to change his personality, he did wish he was what humans considered handsome & that they wouldn't automatically call him a monster & assume he was going to eat them. If he was human, then Fiona wouldn't have taken permanent ogre looks to be with him & she wouldn't have to have their love put strain on her relationship with her parents.
So, Donkey had also been told by humans that he was ugly & unwanted. He wanted to be bigger, stronger & braver like a "valiant steed". Even though Dragon found him attractive, Donkey's mindset was also affected by human beauty & personality standards.
Also, on the other hand, the potion was made by Fairy Godmother, who was obviously prejudiced against certain kinds of people. Remember her disgusted statement to Shrek that ogres don't get happily ever afters? She made Fiona be an ogre because she considered them all horrible & ugly. So I think the magic potion puts you in the form that you or Fairy Godmother thinks is handsome & will guarantee your happily ever after, & then it makes the same change to your true love because of course in order to not be judged by anyone, even those who are prejudiced, then you & your mate would have to be of "the same kind", no "mixed" marriages to offend anyone.
So, Donkey became a horse & Dragon became a flying horse because even though to some humans donkeys are cute, humans overall still think a horse is far more beautiful & useful than a stubborn donkey.

I feel like one of 3 things happened:
Either A, the Dronkeys were eggs, and as such we’re not changed visibly, or aware of the change,
B, they were born like mammals and were not.... out.... yet..... again, not visibly changing or aware of the change,
Or C, they’d as been born, but didn’t change at all. The potion specifically mentions the person and their true love. I don’t think it would impact their children. Worst comes to worst, Dragon struggled keeping a bunch of fire breathing baby dragon donkeys content and fed while at the time likely being smaller than usual and not as fireproof.

I really like the idea of Dragon turning into a Pegasus! It fits with her being a flying mythical creature, and further hints at Fairy Godmother’s strict adherence to fairytale rules.

Perhaps that’s also where the “they couldn’t hide her pregnancy” reason comes in; if she appeared in the movie as a pegasus, she would have looked very bloated around the middle, immediately tipping off the audience to why Donkey said she’s been moody, instead of leaving it a surprise with the dronkies at the end.

I don’t think the potion changes you and your love into a form you desire, but a more acceptable form by fairytale standards. Fiona didn’t want to change back into a human in Shrek 2, but she still changed back to her old self.
If you go by traditional fairytale logic, dragons are hideous beasts meant to guard beautiful princesses and be slain by handsome princes. Dragons don’t live happily ever after, so a happily ever after potion would have had to change her into something else.

I always assumed Dragon turned into a unicorn/pegasus/combination of the two, so I guess this just confirms it.
I also assume that the Dronkies were born from eggs, and the reason Dragon was so moody and upset was because she was fill of awkward eggs and close to laying them. She may have just not told Donkey about the eggs in case something went wrong and they weren't fertilized or something, so he wouldn't get excited about being a father only to have nothing come from the eggs. So theoretically, the Dronkies would have remained just that: Dronkies. Because they're not the ones in love with Donkey.
Now imagine if Dragon HAD made her way to Donkey and they kissed (or whatever the horse equivalent would be) and remained a horse and pink pegasus. Not only do you now have the confusion of their names being Donkey and Dragon when they are clearly not those things, but now every time Dragon tells anyone that the Dronkies are their biological children, people are going to be giving her the side eye wondering 1.) Who the baby daddy really is and 2.) How Donkey can be so dense that Dragon told him those are his kids and he believed her.

As the creators confirmed, it turned Dragon into a Pegasus, an equine, because Donkey also was turned into an equine. A noble steed is what Donkey, and Fairy God Mother, would consider to be the more attentive transformation for him as he drank it.

(since the eggs are probably 2/3rds her size) maybe even the eggs hatch while shes still a pegasus and the babies dont obey her because they dont recognize her as their mother. mayhem of child rearing ensues and when the babies are about to cross the final line with pegasus-dragon, she changes back and they realize shes mama.

As with most people responding, my family and I asked ourselves this very question. We had finally decided that because dragons were inherently magical that she wouldn't have been affected by the potion. This would explain why the babies were not affected either.
Donkey on the other hand, had to change per the potion. His being called a noble steed in the first movie, was his idea of an improvement.
I prefer the idea that there was something more powerful than the fairy godmother. Her whole persona was she had the ultimate power over everyone else. I find it reassuring that there was something more powerful than her.
Honestly, the worst thing about Shrek 2 is how it handles Dragon. She’s just not there in the whole movie and it’s like it completely forgot about her until the end credit scene
It seems more likely to me the Dragon was moody and stand off-ish because she had laid eggs and was brooding them. If she did indeed transform for that one day-----and the idea of her being a pink pegasus was pretty good----the babies would most likely not have been affected, since they would already have been hatched from their eggs. After all, they could already fly when Donkey saw them for the first time, so they had to be at least a couple days old. But it would have been hilarious to see Dragon as a pink pegasus brooding over her newly hatched "chicks".

After considering this question for literal years, there’s several angles to consider. First the no transform theory. Simply put, Fiona didn’t really transform into a new form, as much as she reverted into what she originally looked like before the curse. Whereas Shrek turned into a new form unseen before the potion. This theory follows the idea that the females already exist in their perfect form, with Fiona simply going back to that original form. Since Donkey transforms we can assume that Dragon(Elizabeth) would either stay in her original form (dragon) or go back to her original form (The idea she was cured to be a dragon from some other creature) This would fit, because both the men, Donkey and Shrek become new forms of themselves, whereas their true loves did not take new forms. So if that’s the case, dragon either stays a dragon, or perhaps becomes what she was before. Then there’s the everyone transforms theory. This idea is that both Shrek and Fiona change to a “prettier” form, and thus since donkey changed, Dragon changed. That’s the area of debate most talked out in comments. Pegasus doesn’t seem right. Donkey is clearly still an equine, same as how Shrek and Fiona are both still humanoids. So why would dragon change so dramatically? Sure a Pegasus flies and makes a good match for a stallion, but she wouldn’t resemble her former self, something we see with Shrek and Fiona. That’s why I like a Phoenix, it keeps the fire aspect, and flying, and we know birds are descendants of dinosaurs, which dragon resembles. Another creature I thought of is perhaps a pterodactyl. It would keep her a flying creature, and maintain the reptilian look, while also slimming her down, and bringing her closer to donkey’s size. However I find it hard to think a pterodactyl could be animated to look “prettier” than dragon. That’s why I think Phoenix is the obvious answer. Her face could stay relatively the same, keeping the spikes and frills of a dragon, while making her body a fiery ribbon. Does anyone have any alternative flying reptilian creature they can think of?

A great mythical beast that I love that she could have become is a Qilin/Kirin, coming from Eastern folklore/mythology. In China its usually dipicted as a wingless dragon with hooves and a mane. In Japan it's shown as 'a dragon in the shape of a deer'. It is ranked as one of the most powerful mythological creatures in eastern mythology! (I'm getting most of this from Wikipedia, so take it with a pinch of salt!)
Dragon becoming a kirin would harmonize her with Donkey becoming a stallion, while keeping her mythological and draconian identity. While a giant pink pegasus is fun, I feel like its a little too... soft for Dragon. She could also keep mostly to her colour palette or maybe even darker in contrast to Donkey's white coat as a stallion, referring to the fact that normally the two couldn't be any more different.

Andrew Payne Dragon was not chained up at first, she only became chained up after Shrek made the chandelier fall on her and around her neck and made her get tangled up, so before that she was just chilling there, she had the ability to come and go as she pleased, she must have decided to stay there for some reason, or maybe she was asked to reside there just to guard Fiona.

Pretty sure Dragon laid a clutch of eggs instead of being pregnant, and her moodiness was more the fact she had eggs in development and on the way out.
Speaking in terms of animals, I suspect Dragon was trying to nest properly to lay the eggs, but Donkey kept her distracted... Because she is a carnivore, she likely was fighting the urge to eat him on top of nesting. Laying the clutch of eggs, and then having hatched eggs, I can see Dragon being shocked that her babies were suddenly MASSIVE compared to her, and realized she was turned into something, but prioritized her babies before investigating.
THEN when the transformation wore off, she took the kids, looked for Donkey, and showed him what made her so moody.

When I was a kid I was always under the impression that Donkey was just sort of tied into the effects the Happily Ever After potion was having on Shrek and Fiona, and thus nothing would happen to Dragon, since she wasn't part of the equation.

1:45-2:00 I think there's a theory out there that states that Dragon has some asinine genes in her and, similar to actual donkey biology, wanted to give birth away from her husband. So even though Donkey didn't know Dragon was pregnant at the time, he did give her the space she needed to conceive as biology would dictate.
