According to my parents, as a child, I’ve watched Shrek SO many times. I’ve basically memorized every line. I apparently even had a CD with the Shrek soundtrack on it, and memorized EVERY song... I don’t know if I was a strange child, or a cultured child
There's a fourth? I thought that after going from Fairy Godmother to Rumpelstiltskin and with what Shrek had to go through I thought that was a great way to end the franchise
It's so validating when you realize that the classic films you grew up with turn out to be well-crafted and thought-out masterpieces that stand the test of time.
I just rewatched Shrek 2 and was surprised by how well-paced it was. No one’s dwelling on a misunderstanding or is spending too much time sad. Instead, Shrek and his friends act intelligently and move the plot along when they're supposed to. I could believe the movie was almost over when the Fairy Godmother gave King Harold the love potion.
Very unfortunately, The Blockbuster Buster, Cartoon Palooza would and et cetera et cetera would be all like “You’re giving Shrek 2 way too much credit, it’s not at all THAT deep!” if he saw it. Even if they didn’t dislike Shrek 2, they reviewed it unfairly to make people look like it has more flaws than people see, as if they were any more insightful when it makes them look like the people that look for things to complain about in many DreamWorks Animation movies that they are. Hell, Cartoon Palooza even went as far as to say that without Shrek 2, Shark Tale wouldn’t have been the way it is! Shrek 2 could’ve been a positive influence on Shark Tale to make it an amazing movie, but how Shark Tale turned out executed to be the disaster (no pun intended) it is will always be a mystery since it has all the potential to be as great as people make it out to be in retrospect, potential and nostalgia.

And what’s great is that through the whole movie Shrek and Fiona still loved each other. They just had trouble getting onto the same page because they were fighting different battles at the same time (Fiona dealing with abandonment issues from her parents leaving her in a tower, and Shrek’s self worth worsening again by being discriminated against constantly), the only thing stopping them from working out these issues together were the other characters keeping them apart. Once they were reunited in the end they were as strong as ever. It’s so easy for writers to just completely break down the relationship in the first movie so they can rebuild again it in the sequel. But it just cheapens the love when they do that. I’m so glad they didn’t go that far for this movie and it just about Shrek realizing he DOES deserve happiness.
Fun fact the people at Dreamworks were originally going to make an original song for the first scene in Shrek 1 and the All Star version was an animation test but then the they decided that All Star fit so well with the scene that they decided to get the rights from Smashmouth
I’m not saying that the ending got me crying, but damn did that ending really hit way too close to home. Everything you said about being good enough shook me to my core where the only thing I would tell myself is how I’m not good enough for my friends or my family but to be told that I deserve joy sparked something in me. Thank you. I feel like things are going to be better now.
Shrek 2 was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. I was also obsessed with the Shrek movies as a kid. My dad said I had the most bearable movie obsession because he liked the movies too
I only just realized that Gingy screams “NOT THE GUMDROP BUTTON!” In the scene where mongo loses a button. Which is a homage to shrek 1 where he says the same line
16:14 Fun fact: The Shrek movies and The Metal Gear Solid franchise share the same composer. So now I know why the Holding Out for a Hero cover in this slaps so hard.
This is a good video and I agree with most of your arguments, but there is one big reason why Shrek 2 is a needed sequel to the first Shrek that was not touched on. In the first Shrek, Shrek and Fiona kissed while Fiona was an ogre...and she remained an ogre. For all of the talk about accepting yourself, Fiona never really did choose to be an ogre. Even she thought the kiss would make her human. In the sequel, Fiona finds herself human again, not at her own choosing, and while she had accepted being an ogre to be with Shrek, she didn't mind being human, either; her real issue was how "Shrek" had changed so drastically. In the end, Fiona decides to consciously choose to become an ogre again, not just because locking her in a human form would also deny Shrek of who he is, but because despite Shrek's lingering doubts (which admittedly is growth from the first movie as he now actively considers what he's done to her through his actions), she doesn't mind being an ogre herself. She actively chooses the form she stays in for all time. In the first movie, for all of the subversions, the princess is still just a prize to be won. In Shrek 2, Fiona is a partner who gets to choose her own fate.
I feel as though this is kind of false? I don't believe Fiona thought kissing Shrek would turn her human. As she herself states, the curse says that she will turn into the FORM of her true love, not back into a human. She understood that, if an ogre was her true love, then she would then turn into an ogre as well.
@@kiwi5442 It's clear from the first movie Fiona accepted that thinking after the fact, but not before. While at the end of the first movie she and Shrek kissed due to true love and clearly not with the intention of turning human, when the curse was broken she still definitely *expected* that to happen. "But I don't understand," she says once the curse has broken, referring to the post-curse form. "I'm supposed to be beautiful." She clearly doesn't think herself of being an ogre as beautiful; that's consistent through the entire first movie. It's reasonable to assume from her comment that she thought she would be human. It's Shrek who tells her that she is beautiful. She doesn't come to this realization herself. In fact that what makes Shrek's insecurities so well founded in Shrek 2; yes, Fiona did unconditionally accept him, but even at the end of the first movie it wasn't clear if she had accepted herself, and that made Shrek in turn doubt himself in the next movie.
I don't think there's ever been a more influential movie in my life. Grew up with these movies... Loved them as a kid even if they were so deep we didn't fully understand them as kids... But as you grow up (I'm now a college student), they still hit. They're relatable. I am an autistic person and have struggled a lot with identity, these movies that were with me most of my life, have always been there to relate to and they've actually helped me through things. Through self-doubt, through being unable to accept myself for who I am, to struggling socially, or with relationships, or being alone... Or always feeling like I'm not good enough They're phenomenal, truly.
Fun fact, John Cleese's real name is technically Cheese. His dad enrolled in WW1 and changed it to Cleese because I think he didn't find Cheese fitting for the army
Didn't think I would ugly cry from the raw emotion and realism that they put into Shrek but just shows how compelling the story really is with great characters and message. It can be funny but also hit hard with emotion since a lot of the obstacles they experience we as people in a society have faced in some form or other which makes it all the more impactful.
Dreamworks is amazing at sequels in general. How to Train your Dragon 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Sherk 2, all amazing as sequels. Which as you know, is reallly hard to pull off. One of my favorite Dreamworks movies, i feel didn't get all the love it deserved. Megamind.

I did NOT expect Shrek 2 would become THAT deep oof

Thanks for that inspirational message at the ending, my man. I needed that.
Damn this is also exactly what I needed. Ive had so much stupidity happen and this.. this helps
I am actually crying right now that message was so powerful
Damn.
*slow clap*
Seems a tad reachy
"I'm supposed to be beautiful."
She clearly doesn't think herself of being an ogre as beautiful; that's consistent through the entire first movie.
Is “ I need a hero” a villain song because it is probably one of the greatest animated villain songs.
It’s a villain song because it’s a good villain song?
It's iconic
joshscorcher put it as his number 2 best non-disney movie villain song, only being beaten by Biggering, an unused song for the lorax 2012
Why are villain songs always the best one?
Yes, yes it is.
Or always feeling like I'm not good enough

The fairy godmother scene is just... epic, the best one i have seen in any movie i watched so far. She's happy singing and trying to complete her plan, but during this time Shrek also tries to get into the castle while nobody suspects it, fights the guards and then during the culmination takes Fairy Godmother's "Happily Ever After", ironic that she wanted to take Shrek's but her own got taken.
