I think it’s interesting how many of these videos I’m starting to see in the planner community. I think everyone has collectively realized that planning has become more of a trend, than something that is actually beneficial to each one of us. I won’t lie, I have found myself getting caught up in the trends, countless times, but as I am currently reinventing aspects of my life, I realize I don’t need the expensive planners, the colorful pages, the million and one stickers, and extensive layouts. I actually found that I was getting more stressed out trying to figure out a layout, and figure out what colors to use, and stickers to use that it wasn’t even worth picking up my planner anymore. Time to go back to basics.
I agree with you. I’m actually sitting here this morning overwhelmed by the number of planners and sizes I have trying to find what works. I see so many in the planner community post either various sizes, which I’m not convinced they use…or everyone jumps ship and changes planner size as soon as some of the bigger ‘influencers’ do. It feels like we’ve lost what planning is about. Earlier this year I packed up all my stickers and just used pen, paper and highlighter because I was so burnt out with stickers and vellum. I just took my stickers out of storage, but paired down my stash dramatically.
You just worded my feelings perfectly. I've been seeing the Hobonichi planner everywhere this year and feel very conflicted to get it after using solely the dotted leuchtturm a5 notebook for 6 years now. I've experienced all the trends, from the OG BohoBerry to the now Hobonichi planner. I feel like I need a change in my life as I would like to daily journal as well as keep up with my collection spreads, my weekly and daily tasks, my monthly goals etc. I just want it to work for me and not be a stressful time having to make beautiful spreads, which I end up not using. It's so frustrating
I love this video. It's a very "back-to-Basics" kind of video that sometimes is definitely needed. Also, let me just say that the way this is filmed and edited, it immediately reminds me of Studio Ghibli with how "Slice-of-Life" or "Slow Lifestyle" it is. I appreciate the time it took for you to make this and remind us that it's okay to take a step back and reevaluate when something isn't working like it once was.
Just landed here after using Passion Planner for years but feeling overwhelmed by the full week view. My daily Moleskin is on order and I was feeling frustrated about spending money on two planners for 2024, but then saw your vid. Really appreciate the reframe around when something isn’t working anymore, it’s part of a natural change or growth in your life. This is so true and opens up lots of space to remind myself of this.
I also made the switch from google calendar back to a daily paper planner. Time blocking worked for me until i felt pressured to fill out every white spot. The additional screen time taking care of ny calendar at the end of a screen rich work day was also a point. I literally craved to write something down pen and paper. Things change :)
Thank you for this video. I recently faced the same challenge recently and went back to planning my personal life on a paper planner. This is by far the best way for me to avoid overwhelming myself. I believe that paying attention to, caring and loving oneself are probably the most important goals to achieve in life. Everything else is a bonus ❤️
I stumbled upon your channel while searching for stuff about daily planner. I'm in awe of the aestheticism of your channel. Everything is very pleasing. Kudos.
This video’s timing is so synchronistic. This year has been hectic for me, my trusted planner of 3 or 4 years now is less helpful and more stressful. I was just thinking about this last night. I’m thinking simple to-do list as well! I also feel a pull to a habit tracker that is separate from my planner- if one isn’t working, it’s less likely to throw off the other. I have ADHD, this is something that happens with me naturally. My brain gets bored of the same old thing but that’s okay! As long as I’m flexible, it can be an asset in helping me change perspectives 😊
I can only use bullet journal because of it. I was never able to use a normal schedule, now I know I just can't avoid to be bored with the strict method.
Haha same here! 🤓 I get easily bored so I "plan" more freely and change my planner as I need to, I cannot really force myself on this matter, as long as I don't lose track of what I want to do, I'm good! Carroll's bullet journal method also worked for me, I still do it, I'm in my 11th notebook now in fact, but I mostly keep my immediate to-do list/deadlines somewhere else, like post its, wall monthly calendar, simple daily planner. Something like that :)
Its not because of your channel is productivity and i am a productivity freak, every scenes is stimulating that i took a screenshot because its tooo beautiful... this is how you inspire. Over the top of inspiring calm voice. Thanks. Much needed for my hectic life right now.
And i remember, bullet journal. Be it todo or ramblings, it always works. Write your mind out in a book. It will bring more clarity than checklists and softwares. Thats what I learned. Feels to be back at home.
Thank you for this video. This was one of the most comforting productivity videos I watched so far. It also reminds me to forgive myself if I am not able to sustain a productivity system that I’m trying. Thank you 😢❤
The only planning method that has ever worked for me is with a simple planner from Muji. I use the monthly section to write things that I’ve gotten done daily, the daily section for simple thoughts and reflection, while the weekly grid blank pages for any ideas, projects, sketches, etc. Very simple and effective for my needs. Every other planner system just overwhelms me and feels like such a chore to keep up..😫
Yep - I’ve gone back to keeping my schedule on my iPhone calendar, especially because I can set reminders and include URL links and notes if needed, and just a composition notebook for daily lists and journaling. It was after I experienced health challenges this year that I realized how critical a simple system is. I only had enough energy for the essentials - no stickers, layouts, punching & cutting, etc. I’m feeling better now, but still appreciate minimalism and simplicity. I can always add stickers and such to my composition notebook if I want to, but I can also just keep it simple.
In high school I used a monthly and weekly planner and I filled in everything. In my last year I stopped writing my plans in details and switched to post it notes. In university I kept switching between a pocket planner, regular planner and digital planner. But a regular A5 planner worked the best for me. Now I use monthly planner just to jot down keywords, and the weekly section usually left empty unless I need to jot down extra details. So far this method works for me the best. I never felt it was a big deal, planner to me is like a diary, it shows what part my life I was busy, or had most fun. So i always excited when I change or get a new planner!
I used to have an elaborate day planner and used it for years. Now I keep appointments on my cell phone and I have a simple book and each day I list my to do’s for “personal”, “home” and “away”. It works great for me!

I love your video. So relaxing. Thank you so much! I personally get so frustrated and restless sometimes when planning. A constant nagging feeling of "this is just a waste of time". Or me wanting to be more productive when I probably need to take things slow. Thank you so much for this reminder:)
Your video so spoke to me. I tried all kinds of ways to plan but ultimately, I have found that a simple to do list, reviewed daily works for me. I find my most productive list lives in my apple reminders, which can be moved around and added to on a moment’s notice.
I really needed to see this video that comes at a very good time. My system with the best and most automated tools works very well, I do everything I have written down to do, I don't miss a single commitment from my calendar, I don't forget anything. Even so, I did not feel satisfied, I think that time off was missing to reflect. Starting today, my notebook and my black pen return to my routines. There are things that technology cannot do for us: think, reflect, course correct. Thank you Mariana.
Pen and paper-always the best! I have never understood how it might be practical to use apps for planning and a planner at the same time! It’s like making things even more complicated for yourself :)
Same, using a planner and keep it at a few tasks a day. I put a green or red circle based on if I completed it. I watched a lot of time blocking videos and it can be a good system but there’s some seasons in life you can’t schedule everything like that.
This is the reason the only planning method that works for me is the bullet journal. I can come back to it whenever I want and make it whatever I want according to my mental state. Sometimes you just need a todo list but sometimes time-blocking can feel like God-sent!
A couple of days ago, while thinking of my 2023 setup, I searched your page and Patreon for news on your layout for 2023. I feel you’re getting back to bujo (without the collections, just the daily to do lists) but on a blank page everyday. Sometimes the simplest of systems brings the most calmness to our planning routine, while keeping everything organised.
I felt the SAME WAY about my beloved Hobonichi Weeks Mega as my bullet journal. My life has slowed down and I'm a retired case manager now. I don't need a big ass personal planner and let me be honest here: pocket has ALWAYS been my go-to workhorse size for a reason. So, I'm switching permanently back to pocket and making my life fit into my planner vs the other way around. For me, this is working because it's forcing me to deal with the parts that don't work and either modify it to work more efficiently or cut it out completely.
I tried hobonichi and it's a great planner. However I only use the dailies. My life now is busy but doesn't like the heavy structure of calendar blocking and it made me feel like I lost control of my day when I went over my initial calendar time. (And therefore more stressed). Thanks for the relaxing video.
I really needed this video! I tried so hard to use my iPad and planner, I like the idea of it. But it just doesn't work for me, I will forget to open it which makes it completely useless, I am a very visual person so when I have a book constantly open next to me on my agenda, I will look at it more often and actually follow through. It makes me sad because that's one of the main reasons I bought an iPad but I guess I just need to let it go 😅
Gosh this is such a necessary message. It's the systems that have to work for US, not the other way around. I've also been purging my productivity methods, and recently noticed how well that's serving me these days!
I struggle to use just a plain planner. I want to try to get into bujo. But the creativity people show in it makes it intimidating for some reason. Anyways, I love your channel. I also love that teapot, where can I get it??
If you look for the original inventor of the BuJo, it is basically a set of lists, where you put everything you come across in one book. I have been using a bullet journal for 10 years, I have two different pens (headers and text) and some washitape and pagemarkers for the setup. It houses my random notes, ideas, central to-do list and seperate lists for ideas in different areas and the like. I also do some rough time and day blocking and use the calendar on my phone. (I work as a freelancer, author, I volunteer and I am a mom, and I have no time or inclination to do fancy drawings. I think for some people, bullet journalling doubles as their hobby.) I recommend it, especially if your brain is full of random things.
Oof that moleskine paper though. My question.... how do you know what else to add to your day? You only add things once you cross something off, but where are you pulling the new to-dos from?

I wouldn't call it "bujo". Just a notebook for to-do lists.
Planning existed before bujo. The Franklin Covey system had a prioritized daily task list with arrows, check marks, dots and x back in the 90s.
