That is because of our society. Most of our people are too lazy to actually read up on a subject to get the actual facts. We base everything on feelings.
I'm grateful to have met DrJ and what a class act he still is today. A great role model to anyone looking for guidance. His personalized autograph on his rookie card is one of my prized collectables that I have in my collection.
He is the only player that I'd get excited the day of the game, imagining what the Dr. was going to do, we all knew we were gonna see something we never seen before, all these moves you see now, we first seen in the 70's.
It's hard to describe that first season after the merger - first of all, the ABA teams weren't allowed to draft in that first season, so they were effectively frozen with their ABA rosters while the rest of the league got better, the Nuggets and Spurs had (for most of the season) the two best records in the NBA, more than half the All-Stars that year had ABA roots, the Nuggets used their red, white, and blue balls in their pre-game warm-ups, delighting the NBA home crowds (til the NBA put a stop to it), the Sixers had several ABA players on that first roster (defensive genius Bobby Jones, seven-footer Caldwell Jones, and all-star George McGinnis - and later Moses Malone), but were beaten by the Trailblazers who really were led by ex-ABA'ers Maurice Lucas and point-guard Dave Twardzik, who changed the dynamics of the team.
I was born in 1970, honestly this man was God when I was kid, he is the reason I started watching basketball and my 1st game ever watching was May 16,1980.
Other than Bird, who is better at the position in their prime? only player I heard a new story every day the court, new who he was and had never seen a game. Cable was new and not every one had it💸
Easily a top 10 player of all time. I got to watch him play live in college. They had a no-dunking rule back then in the NCAA and the game I saw him play he had 14 FG's on 14 shots for 28 points against the U of Maine. I think almost every shot was him skying over all the defenders and dropping it in softly from a foot above the rim.
speaking of nicknames Dr J gave George Gervin the nickname "Ice Man" when they played on the Virginia Squires in the ABA. DrJ said Gervin could drop 40 on you without breaking a sweat!
Bc they have zero respect for the past. 99% of them are young guys who think anything before 2000 was below the rim players shooting granny shots at a peach basket. And they value athleticism & flashy highlights over skill, IQ & teamwork. Truth is, basketball peaked in the 80s & 90s & has been on a downward slide ever since. The modern game isn’t even a shadow of what it used to be.
Those that chose to not study history are doomed to repeat it, it's ok, but know this, there are no new ideas in this world only variations of old ideas!!!! Better start paying attention.
When I was a little kid my friends dad took us to see a umass basketball game. It was amazing he just looked like a super hero ( I was 7) ill never forget that afternoon watching that man sail through the air✌️
He was the first highlight film back in the 70's along with Pistol Pete. The Doctor is my favorite player of all-time. I got to see the Doc when he was at his best in the ABA. When he came to the NBA when the ABA folded he had 2 bad knees.
Need more videos like this. As an aside i'd love to see Wilt in today's game. From what I've seen he was a volleyball player masquerading as a basketball player. He could get up so fast.
Great reaction video, I'm a 62 yr old man that grew up playing basketball. All I gonna say is when your really into something, no matter what it is, that community has an ear to the ground & notice all the new up & coming talent. When Jordan was in college the buzz in our community was "hey they got this kid in college & they working his ass on the leg machine trying to duplicate what Dr J was doing in the70's". I later realized they were referring to MJ. So basically along the way ppl in MJ's camp long before you ever heard of him looked at MJ's abilities & started working on giving MJ the necessary training for him to thrive in there opinion, & Mj being MJ had the mental fortitued to reach new hieghts. Remember Jordon had a working blueprint laid out by the Doctor. No one was doing what Dr. J was doing & to show you how good a human he is, Doc told MJ to do his free throw line dunk at that contest. Oh & the ABA was not on tv so the masses never saw him until the NBA merged with the ABA & he was way older. Keep up the good content bro!
Coach Wiz, 61 yr old here, 12 in 1976- Dr. J was like a superhero to us, and totally cool, great guy who could fly! and that ABA style, the red white and blue ball- everyone that loved basketball wanted to be Dr. J, just an awesome player, and much more all around than people think...his and the 76'ers battles vs. Larry Legend and the C's were legendary, one of the All Timer's and like Bird and Magic, and later MJ, he carried the torch for the NBA and helped make it the great world game it is now...check out David Thompson, the Sky Walker, another ABA great...ok thanks, peace
@@CoachWizReacts Rick Barry is the only player to lead the league in scoring in the NCAA, the ABA, and the NBA. He was a scoring machine. If he played in the 3 point line in he NBA.... he would average 36-40 . He was also a great passer.
Rick Barry could have played with the Virginia Squires but he wouldn't sign. He wanted a team in a bigger market. Sports Illustrated had Barry on the cover of one issue with the caption "The Reluctant Virginian." He and Dr. J probably wouldn't have meshed anyway.
"Any time Dr. J showed up, it was like an Alien had just stepped off of a Spaceship" (Pat Riley) ...Doc did those numbers shooting few if any threes, he caught a lot of flak for his subpar mid-range game which he tightened up around 27.. 28 years old. Doc was TAKING FOOLS BAD TO THE 🏀HOLE🏀!!! I can't stand that 💩💩💩!!! He's not a F'ing horse. They paid for the rights to sign him. Dude thinks he's slick, I bet he won't say it around me.
Walton was the quickest center I ever saw play. He'd come down with a board, turn in midair, and heave it downcourt to a guard before his feet hit the floor.
Darryl Dawkins? That's chocolate thunder. But yes David thompson was the 1st Jordan since that's who Jordan says he copied. His nickname was Skywalker.
@@GeorgeThomas-bw4fs what made Baylor the first Jordan? Because he was an athletic SF? I'm not necessarily disagreeing I just don't associate the two. I could see Baylor being the first Dr J or any athletic SF LeBron hell even Bird probably due to his rebounding. But when I think of Jordan I see guards.
I do think he is easily top 5 small forwards. When he played he was wildly popular while still being a bit of a mythic legend. We all heard about him but the majority hadn't seen him. Great player in the court, classy individual off the court. His cultural impact was off the charts.
About time Dr. J got some credit. People say I am crazy but I recall one game where he dunked from the top of the key. Maybe I was just seeing things or not. But I remember that from a regular game and not the slam dunk competition. Either way, he was always putting on the moves in each and every game.
Dr. J was a scorer in the ABA. But the Sixers were full of scorers so he had to sacrifice scoring. Now that the NBA is not allowing ABA stats, his legacy is in jeopardy. Doc could palm the ball off the dribble while other players had bring the ball up with both hands to palm it.
I think doc’s prime is up there with Bird’s. Doc was a true SF and Bird won two of his titles as a PF, but he was super dominant at SF as he was 6’10 and could shoot over most anyone. Anyway doc is my favorite
Something to consider about Doc is that he was not a good outside shooter. Not terrible, just mediocre. But this meant that defenders would back off him to prevent the drive. But he still got in there. Over and over...
One of my all time favorites, my idol growing up (well, one of them! I had several idols in basketball lol). Speaking of the ABA you should definitely check out Roger Brown! He was similar to Elgin & Doc in style and came a few years before Doc. Same goes for The Hawk, Connie Hawkins, who was like a cross between Wilt and Doc.. I'm not even kidding :) All 3 ABA legends. I always found it ridiculous that Doc and honestly several others (West and Baylor for instance) aren't in the GOAT conversations. They regularly used to be back in the day. That '83 Sixers team is easily a top 5 team all time imo.
Dr. J was awesome but this video is not the best highlight film. You need to find a better video that really shows him in action. There are better videos of him to see.
Before Jordan came to Chicago and gave pme something to cheer about, Dr J was my favorite player!!! That's going back to the 70's. The 76'ers were my team (which use why I hated Bird).
I only cried 3 times in my life because of sports, 1. The 1982 NBA finals, 2. My skins losing to the raiders in the Super Bowl and 3. My Hoyas losing in 1985.
Sell him? Ahh…. yeah, talking about his contract. Cmon man. In the NBA YOU SELL CONTRACTS NOT INDIVIDUALS. They could have said that, it would have sounded better. The Nets were cash strapped. A guy making 3 million a year in ‘77 sure as fuck is no slave. Want to grab a beer? Let me know the next time you’re in NY.
Cringe when you acknowledge Walton as a beast and say The Dr was overrated!? Congratulations, you're doing research. You learned something on this day, watch the slander on Dr. J!!!!!!!

I love how people call people overrated, without doing the full research.
That is because of our society. Most of our people are too lazy to actually read up on a subject to get the actual facts. We base everything on feelings.
Anyone who legit thinks Dr. J was overrated has next to zero knowledge...at least this dude is admitting he was wrong.
Overrated? I think you mean UNDERRATED!
Julius Erving was the Funky-Fly-Freshest man to ever play the game of basketball. WORD
I'm grateful to have met DrJ and what a class act he still is today. A great role model to anyone looking for guidance. His personalized autograph on his rookie card is one of my prized collectables that I have in my collection.
He seemed like such a chill cool guy. Handled his self with grace. What an honor that is for you
It's crazy how LBJ gets so much credit for making the finals 11 times but no one remembers Dr J finals runs.
Those of us who are old enough do remember. What Bron is doing is the current era(and last era 😂) so it makes sense that it’s being talked about more.
It’s disrespectful to not have this man in the top 10 All Time… The NBA as we know it started with Him… AND HE COULD PLAY!!!
He is the only player that I'd get excited the day of the game, imagining what the Dr. was going to do, we all knew we were gonna see something we never seen before, all these moves you see now, we first seen in the 70's.
That’s amazing man. Thanks for sharing! He truly is an icon
Straight up! Everywhere he played they sold out the building.
Don't forget about C. Hawkins
Dr J had the sweetest finger roll lay up ever. He was slick with it.
Yo relax. Iceman is the finga roll goat
It was iceman like lol.
No that will be the Iceman!!!!!
Oh hell yeah.
Here's what Ice says about it in this video "George Gervin about Finger Roll".

Wilt Chamberlain was the first NBA superstar, just to be accurate.
That comic book ad at 6:43 was a classic. The first time I saw a drawing of Rick Barry and Dr. J

Yes, they sold him. The same way Boston sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees.
You weren't listening. They decided to sell him because they didn't have enough money to pay his contract

I grew up watching DR J. He’s always my goat! ⛹🏾♂️👍🏾

To every account Julius Erving was the coolest dude in any room. And could flat out ball.

Dr.J was not the first Michael Jordan. He was Julius Erving the Doctor. Period.

A great player and a great personality.
Future players to look at? How about Robert Horry; more championship rings than MJ, Magic, Kareem, and Bird.
That would be Elgin Baylor then Connie Hawkins then Julius Irving then Michael Thompson then Michael Jordan
Dr. J and Artis Gilmore to me were the fathers of modern basketball. But hey. Just my humble opinion.
