Overall, I believe that The Witch Queen is my favourite expansion.
It’s the first time that the campaign has felt that it was meaty in terms of difficulty with the Legendary version giving Savathûn’s boss fight the necessary weight. There’s also the fact that Vow is a fantastic raid with a self contained story that actually builds up a lot for future stories.
Forsaken was brilliant and did a lot for D2, like TTK did before it for D1, but had a better narrative that felt like an actual follow up to TTK, with the consequences of Mara Sov’s grand plan and the secrecy she placed on it playing out before our eyes. It also marks the first time by the end of the story that we lost, completely, having played right into Savathûn’s hands.
However, with that being said, TTK has something that no DLC has managed to capture since. Narrative funnelling. Because every single piece of content, the campaign, the post-campaign quests, the exotic quests, Court of Oryx, the raid, everything is funnelling down to one cohesive end. Killing Oryx. It is laser focused and I have to give it props for that.

Is a bit hard to judge each expension since the state the game was in before them is quite different. I'd say that both Forsaken and Witch Queen are above TTK in terms of story telling, world building and integration of both into the gameplay, however The Taken King in terms of sheer content amount is way way above anything we will see and as an old player, I remember that content even if "less good" more fondly than anything D2 has introduced.
Personally havent played D2 in years, I follow the game because of its story but I played it for PVP and competitive and Bungie has criminally ignored and actively killed that side of the community and that is something that neither Forsaken nor Witch Queen have improved. Forsaken was the necessary upgrade D2 had to undergo to get out of the hole Bungie had left the franchise after failing to deliver an upgrade over the final form of D1 and the content it introduced was amazing and finally a reason to be optimistic about D2.
However I think it was this expansion what killed my interest for the game, the big change towards a more RPG formula that for me turned the game from a hobby into a chore and the removal of Trials of the 9 and overall neglect of the PVP side of the game just couldnt keep my friends around and I dropped soon after...
Witch Queen (even tho I havent played it I still follow the game closely) is what feels like the best Destiny 2 has ever been, the climax of years of improvement by bungie... but again, Bungie has kept ignoring pvp and is just sad that we have barely received any content (outside if stasis that was more damaging than anything else) thus I have no reason to come back.
Sorry if you disagree, but as a pvp player Destiny has never been better than during TTK to Rise of Iron.

forsaken hands down is the best because each seasonal content is feels unique with own separate play area, instead of reusing the same public area and boring mechanics over and over again, (motes, dunking) and ship it as new package, its feels old and cheap to be called as 'seasonal content'.
You can see it ever since bungie split from Activision, they have to pump out new season with currently whatever asset they have without putting too much strain on the resources, the result? recycled content/map area and mechanics.
Every weeks you are told to the repeated quest, mechanics of seasonal activities in drip feeding fashion with NPC dialogue as the engine to move the 'season progression'. ("you done for this week, come back next week for the story progression", or the most blantant was in Season of the Lost, in order to stretch 6 months, they put the narrative, "oh, we need to wait for correct time to exorcise the worm" BS
Left the lore and NPC dialogue do the heavy weight lifting because from development standpoint that is by far the cheapest to make.

But in 2015 playing through that campaign, exploring the dreadnaught, with the gritty/serious/d1 color scheme, is unmatched to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the other dlcs (forsaken and witch queen) but ttk did so much for the game, so many new strikes, crucible additions, the raid, swords, sidearms. It’s just the best relative to it’s time. Ttk in 2015 did more than what forsaken did in 2018 and witch queen this year.

The Taken King is the best by far. It launched Destiny into it's golden age, revived the game, and made it more popular than ever before. It introduced 3 brand new subclasses, added some of the most iconic weapons of all time, gave us a great campaign, and gave us the definitive best Destiny villain with Oryx, along with the raid that all other raids are measured against.
There is no argument to be made other than The Witch Queen having a better campaign. That's the only thing it has going for it against The Taken King.

To me it's Forsaken, as it came out like a nuke drop, it ALTERED the game, had huge amounts of content, exotics and missions I hunted through the entire year, insane exotics and new supers. But it was made at a different time, WQ was created with a smaller team, that didn't need to salvage the game but bring it to the new age, and I think WQ will have a better overall year. WQ is an expansion that is part of the whole package IMO, and the seasons will be 100x superior to Forsaken's.

The post campaign in witch queen is pretty lacking in my opinion and raidweapons should not be craftable for me. And the adept raid weapons shpuld drop with the upgraded perks as a default.
And the strike playlist needs a rework.
Those are the problems that came with witch queen imo.

the throne world patrol feels lacking and more empty than it should be. Like they had the opportunity to add so many secrets beyond deep sight chests and the inquisitors that could’ve been made towards more endgame or close to it like content. More world bosses with specific loot, named hive guardians and more of them in general. Lots of portals to shortcut locations with nothing really in them and the few puzzles they have may drop some general world loot at best a bunch of blues or just throne world rank at worst .
Definitely more exotics not counting seasonal weapons and counting the exotic glaives as one we had a total of four new exotics that includes the raid weapon. Then two amour pieces per class.
The playlists issues remain as you mentioned.

I played vanilla destiny so my opinion is 100% biased. The taken king brought me back into destiny and held me though the wrath of the machine. WotM will always be my favorite DLC because of the memories playing with so many friends and randos. Walking them through the raid and the crazy fun elaborate puzzle. Forsaken brought me back to D2 after first buying it but it didn’t have the same hold at TTK.

I love what all three expansions did for the games. For me, I love this Marvel format, while also understanding it is a mixed bag. Personally, Witch Queen is my favorite, and it was a much more compelling story than Taken King or Forsaken. At the same time, I also recognize that I am more active in the game now than I ever was in the Forsaken or Taken King eras.

Destiny in its self has gone through a roller coaster of forms. First it seemed linear, light vs dark, then it expanded and felt like more than just light v dark, it felt like light vs dark vs the vex vs calus, but then it goes linear again. Light vs dark, but, we now have a beter understanding of how deep this light v Darkstar goes. After Wtch Queen we can see how deep the manipulations of Savathun Actrally were. And now with lightfall and final shape we will get to see what shape this battle of light v dark will take inthe end

It is really unfortunate that I cannot ~fully~ participate in this conversation as I wasn't around for The Taken King. There's a ton of discussion out there around this subject and I really like your approach/thought process...and I actually think I agree with you.
I was on the fence, leaning towards Which Queen just because of the strong story and the RE-playable (normal and legendary) campaign missions. Honestly, what kept me from casting a final vote was only two things:
1.) Cade's arrogant line: "How's your sister?". To me, the writer or writers who came up with that, should have gotten one huge bonus.
2.) Savathun is 1,000,000s of years old, outsmarted the traveller, and has been built up for as long as Destiny is around, yet we ~win~ her just like that...I know she's not dead, but it didn't feel right. Don't know what would have been a ~better~ ending, personally I just didn't like this one too much.
Thanks for all the great content.

Deviousness can only bring you so far. In my mind, this thing with the Traveler was an all or nothing basically. She needed to help weaving and she couldn’t leave, so she had no other choice. Also the fact that we pretty much broke her by showing her she was tricked all along.

I do largely agree with you on a lot of it, however I dont feel like WItch Queen was given enough credit, and the only passiong mentions of the Raids throughout was a miss chance in my opinion as thet offer a lot of insight into design principles of their eras. Fosaken was still the best (in my opinion), and I am super excited to see what the remainder of this year brings to the franchise!

In my personal opinion, I feel like Taken King is by far the best expansion, not just because I’m biased because that’s when I started, but the raid, the big switch in the game, the iconic 3 new supers, the cinematic, and the continuing story from Crota’s death. And people may not agree that it’s the best, which is fine, buts it my opinion , but I think for people who played the expansion can agree that it was so the most memorable, and a great expansion overall.

I like to think that witch queen offered a great experience up front, and leaves older aspects of the game to pick up the slack in leftover places. GM nightfalls, soon to be raid rotations, etc etc.
VoD is a great raid, and is a good challenge for anyone who wants to try raiding. Anyone who can complete VoD can do the other raids.
But, let’s be honest, not much as happened since the Day 1 raid race. We’ve had some repeatable missions tell us some story, the weekly story ended fairly close to the release of witch queen (if you’d ask me, I’d actually delay the season’s start until the day 1 raid was over. Just a thought.)
However, this downtime has given me the opportunity to start getting back into PvP, playing side content, crafting weapons… so for slightly less casual players, we see this as a great opportunity to get some side grind done.
Also, guardian games started today! So that’s a neat way to keep the game fresh right before a new season begins. Unfortunately it’s only like a week or two, so don’t get your hopes up.
Witch queen is a good update. All three of these DLC’s talked about in the video are. But I can’t let witch queen be number one. Especially since crucible & gambit are especially dry.

Just one guardian's humble opinion: Best DLC Narratively > The Witch Queen. Best DLC for QoL Improvements: The Taken King (plus.. King's Fall was excellent) Forsaken did for D2 what TTK did for D1 as far as fixing major issues and while I loved Forsaken, TTK just edges it a little bit for me. Beyond Light was fun the first time but feels a little disjointed from the overall narrative but there's room for Bungie to plug it back in in the future. Like you said.. whichever one you loved the most is the best one and to add to that, it's ok to like them all for different reasons.

  • @austin5801
    @austin5801 2 роки тому +1

I don’t think you can compare either of them. They each had QoL changes that were just improved versions of what we had had before (ie infusion and gear score leveling system for taken king, primary/special/heavy ammo where special weapons can drop in the kinetic slot in Forsaken, and massively improved customizable subclasses in witch queen which was just a better version of D1’s system). I feel like if you took the taken king and stretched it across 4 seasons it probably wouldn’t be as impressive. They all arrived at a time when the game and the players needed them the most. I think it’s safe to say that these DLC’s are all the best.

I started play destiny when the beat came out and bought the game. Me being in middle school at the time, I couldn’t really buy any DLCs plus I lost interest. Fast forward into foresaken. I feel in love with the world and story. Foresaken is the reason why I even played the game. Witch queen on the other hand I just love the story telling and that made me really satisfied. Destiny have a hard time telling a story like they do in the books, witch queen did it perfect for me.

This may be nostalgia talking, but I 100% think The Taken King was the best content Destiny ever got. The key difference between TTK and the Destiny 2 DLCs, is that D2 is still receiving content; there were periods after Forsaken where the game felt nearly as "meh" as it did at launch. In contrast, The Taken King paved a path forward for Destiny 1 that was continuously well made; I never felt my enjoyment of the game fluctuate after TTK the way I have these past couple years in Destiny 2. From a contextual/historical standpoint, The Taken King honestly saved Destiny as a franchise. It re-invented the game, and is the primary reason I wish Destiny 1 would receive a PC port.

I will say all are the best, heck, I think they are perfected in their own way, but one thing rings true to them all, they change how we play, TK, extra subclasses, and new exotics.
Forsaken, New perks and supers as well as the new weapons system.
And witch queen, Void 3.0, weapon crafting, the glave, ect.
That's what I see in all of them, they change how we play.
But if you have to make me pick.......forsaken, for the story, and the new weapons system.

We got a great story with Lord salad man, the plaguelands, archons forge, updated raids with great armor, amazing soundtrack, reworked artifacts, 3 new crucible maps and a new gamemode supremacy as well as private game modes was added, a new raid, a new strike and Rise of Iron Record Book that allows players to track their progress through the expansion's content. And we got all that for $30

I definitely appreciate the breakdown here.
Imo, Taken King felt like a much heftier expansion on the universe than Forsaken, even though by the numbers Forsaken was likely more content than Taken King. The reason for this though is the narrative stakes that those expansions toy with. In Forsaken we're dragged along every week to learn that the stakes are higher than we realize, but we're never met with the impact of those stakes until after the DLC is finished. Who can honestly say that they understood Uldren's motives and goals during Forsaken *before* the Raid dropped and *before* all the recent Savathun lore which explains so much more of Forsaken. There's a lot of Forsaken's story that only gains teeth and meaning after the fact.
    Comparatively...
Taken King's stakes are immediately evident as the entire premise is "Oryx of coming to avenge his son...who you specifically murdered". The weight of the consequences of your actions is instantly made known and that weight follows you all throughout the story and supplimental activities (barring Crucible) because the things that happen are because of you! This fundamental difference in the context of the narrative is why I'll always lean towards Taken King as best DLC. It did the narrative portion right and established so many new ideas that, even this video points out, are being used in modern Destiny constantly.
That all being said, I'll never knock Forsaken and Witch Queen too hard, they also introduced so much cool and new stuff and have really good stories in their own right.
