It’s hard for me personally because it’s a constant battle between uncharted 2 and 3 for which is the best, but man did the multiplayer go crazy back in the day for these games.

Uncharted 3's my favorite game in the series! It was actually the first Uncharted I ever played (probably because my older brother had only bought the newest release of a frachise he otherwise had never played before), and for that reason I've got a large softspot for it the clouds my overall judgement, but even given that, I prefer it over all the others.
Among Thieves is amazing in its sense of scope and evolution from its predessor, but more or less JUST feels like a 3rd person shooter. An incredibly polished and quality 3 person shooter, but nontheless more one note in gameplay. Like you mentioned, Uncharted 3 fails to run out of ideas with its combat scenarios while also pacing them incredibly while in between its set peices and puzzle sections. Whereas 3 feels like a nicely stacked blend of eveything great the game has to offer, among theives is SO combat focused it could get a little tiresome without some better placed breathing room.
The other important thing you brought up was how character focused Drake's Deception is compared to past entries, and I think this ties into my preference for it as well: I can't remember all of Uncharted 2's levels due to how many of them are just combat scenarios, but Uncharted 3 makes a point to take a break from the action to focus on atmospheric, introspective moments that have NEVER left my memory. The terror filled anxiety of escaping the sinking ship is such a bellowing contrast to literally just being DROPPED into the Rub' al Khali for a chapter to wander along the dunes alone with no indicaton on how you'll survive. Nathan's characteration was also strong enough for me that it sorta ruined my enjoyment of Uncharted 4: His desperation to match Francis Drake's legacy only to let it go and choose Elena over more thieving crusades felt like a satisfying conclusion to his character, and it felt odd for them to erase all that as a cheap excuse to throw him back into another adventure :/
Overall I love Uncharted 3 and I'm surprised anyone would classify it as a disappointment. Its not as much as a leap forward as Among Thieves of course and I'm biased in its favor, but its still a quality 3 person shooter with a lot of fun new mechanics, amazing setpieces and solid foundational gameplay.
Plus I just like its aesthetic. Nate's desert outfit is his best look ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really enjoyed reading through your insights, Zach. Thank you so much for sharing!
It's funny how the first game we experience in a franchise can often be our favorite. I'm that way with The Legend of Zelda, for example (Ocarina of Time was my introduction to the series).
I completely agree with you regarding pacing. You could even argue that 3's pacing is superior to 4. I think one of the biggest issues this series has is an occasional over reliance on combat, as you mentioned, but Drake's Deception nailed the balance. And yes, I really loved the narrative territory part 3 entered, and agree that it would have made a satisfying conclusion to the franchise.
I'm hoping someone will end up commenting on this video that *didn't* like 3; I'd love to hear their perspective.
Thanks again for sharing yours, Zach! I hope you'll join us for more videos in the future!

    Wow! Seriously, wow.
I have no idea why so many agreed in advance on U3 being a so-so sequel back then. The criticism developed its own dynamics in 2011, and maybe some magazines jumped on the bandwagon that, without having heard the criticisms of their competitors, perhaps would've praised the game. Since then I've watched so many unfairly over-critical reviews of U3 (that criticized the game for aspects the predecessor got lauded for) and a few fair ones, but this one takes the cake. Everything I would've had to say about the merits of the overlooked red-haired stepchild of the franchise you put into words, concisely, yet comprehensively, and you really pointed out the strengths of what I, too, think is the greatest achievement of the trilogy. I may be biased, but this is the best U3 review I know of.
I'm still really curious as to your thoughts about U4. Will you integrate Lost Legacy or do you consider giving it its own video? (Both approaches would make sense from a certain point of view.) Knowing your track record, I'm confident I will respect the hell out of your opinion about it, whatever it may be. Can't wait to rip U4 a new one in the comments, though! 😁
Oh, and kudos for giving a much deserved shout-out to Greg Edmondson! How the heck did someone like Lorne Balfe migrate from video game to film scoring, and Edmondson is still pretty much unknown?
Again, hats off to you, this is how it's done!

    • @Wilson-108
      @Wilson-108  10 місяців тому +2

Wow, thank you so much, Don!
Regarding the criticism of the game, I think the "viral" effect of opinions may play a role, as you suggest. I try to make sure I avoid all opinions of a game before I review it on the channel to avoid that exact scenario. I cannot tell you how much your positive feedback helps to motivate me to keep on making videos. I know I've said that to you before, but it bears repeating. I'm curious, what are the most common complaints that you see about the game in other reviews? I truly don't know what there is to criticize, particularly if you're already a fan of the series.
I am *very* excited to cover U4. I'm gonna begin my replay tomorrow evening after work. That's a good question, would you be interested in seeing Lost Legacy get its own video? I guess I'll see how this video and the U4 video do to gauge the interest. But I'd love to cover LL. And I'm really interested to hear your full thoughts on A Thief's End!
Honestly, it's thanks to your last comment that I made sure to name drop Greg. I think this game has had my favorite Uncharted OST so far.
Thanks again my friend, part 4 coming up soon!

@@Wilson-108 Very good to hear, Wilson, I'm looking forward to it!
Gameplay-wise, I think LL doesn't warrant its own video, after all it's only an addendum to A Thief's End that was just intended to be a DLC at first and only became its own thing late in the production. Atmosphere-wise, though, I think it has more in common with the trilogy than with U4, so maybe you can get enough out of it for a video.
It wasn't so much a lot of criticism U3 was met with, rather a lack of enthusiasm, a lukewarm reception. "Meh, it doesn't reinvent the wheel!" Oh yeah? You don't have any problem with that with Call of Duty, Gears of War and a plethora of other franchises, but that U3 doesn't turn the franchise on its head is an issue? I was speechless back then because I think there's enough to relatively objectively demonstrate that U3 is even stronger than its stellar and incredibly popular predecessor. It gives you more variety, more set-pieces - and yet it doesn't do that at the cost of what makes Uncharted Uncharted, but with an even stronger focus on the characters and their relationships while keeping the exact tone the franchise is loved for. Of course, the lackluster reviews affected the sales (I guess Naughty Dog didn't pay IGN & co. enough?), although there wasn't much to criticize, apart from the storytelling which, I grant, shows some deficits. In this genre you expect set-piece after set-piece (and U3 bombards you with really good ones) and don't care TOO much how well they're connected, but U3 takes the easy way at some points and strains the audience's suspension of disbelief - which is generous to begin with because of the genre and the tone. But other than that? Can't find much to fault the game for, but a lot to shower it with praise for. As you did.
So yeah, I don't understand why U3 isn't as popular. (Although it seems to be getting reappraised and appreciated by UA-camrs who weren't around when it was released.) But I also don't understand for the life of me why everybody loves U4 to bits, so what do I know? 😉

Ahhh, I gotcha. It's funny cause as you can hear in my review, I started to consider the lack of "innovation" present in 3, but when a game executes its ambitions to effectively, it's hard to care in my opinion. But I suppose I can understand some other perspectives, it's always good to hear another take.

The thing is while the evolution from drake's fortune to among thieves is abysmal the evolution from among thieves to drakes deception is almost none, because it feels like the same game but with different set pieces, it's a good game though!

i just played through the drake collection for the first time and out of the trilogy, deception is my favorite! fortune felt like a good introduction of what to expect, among thieves was a bit too combat heavy for my taste. deception just gripped me from the beginning and held me with its nice balance of everything. combat was a lot more fun this time and being able to throw grenades back was nice. the puzzles were more advanced and challenging here than in the previous titles which was appreciated. i just wish these games had more traps ala tomb raider, or just consequences for screwing up. like the "complete the mural" puzzle absolutely made me think that getting it wrong meant death by spikes, yet nothing happened. or the room where you have to stick your arm into those pillars, the worst that happened is something bit me when i lowkey expected loss of limb lol i've yet to play thief's end and lost legacy, but i'm excited to keep the adventure going!

Hey, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I love hearing other perspectives. It looks like we agree on pretty much everything! Among Thieves definitely leaned too heavily on combat at times; I think Deception is much better paced, with some great puzzle design as well. Having played through the first three games last year to get the platinum trophy I really didn’t like uncharted 3 compared to the rest. The biggest reason for was that the story is just too similar to uncharted 2 and I absolutely hated how the enemies barely reacted to being shot which made the gunfights feel way worse compared to the other games. The most baffling part about that is that enemy reaction to being shot was something that even worked in the first game so it feels really weird that it wasn’t in the third instalment

In short answer - hell no.
As someone who was introduced to the series through Nathan Drake collection and playing Uncharted 4 right after that(I still haven't got time to grab Lost Legacy) and liked all the games Uncharted 3 just captivated me the most. I like to return to it much more than Among Thieves and learned every scene and move to this point.
I'm ready for disagreements, but this game's plot showed who Nate is(yes, I know U4 did the backstory with dead mom, but it felt more about Sam and his redemption arc). The bond between him and Sully is the strongest and the most fleshed out here, the final scene with wedding ring just shows Sully as kindest soul despite him being a crook. And on top of that Marlow is the best and the scarriest Uncharted villian ever. You can argue Lazarevic was more dangerous to the whole world, but it was only Kathrene whom Nate feared and almost never tried to make jokes. Talbot is not as memorable though, I can agree Flynn is the best secondary villian in the franchise.
Charlie Cutter is just a gem, straight to business guy who makes sharp British jokes pulling friendly buttheading with Drake and proves to be useful ally. I wish Chloe was given a bit more screentime, but it's to see her development and acting as voice of reason who cares about everyone being safe(I kinda thought her and Charlie could become a thing but it's pretty unclear now with Nadine in the picture)
The mechanics improved so much since the second game. The fighting is awesome and engaging, the grenade throwing and shield holding is also pretty unique and I could argue riding on horse is more fun than riding a car even if it's literally the same in general.
Another thing to point out, this game probably has the most memorable scenes: plane crash, chasing down a caravan, chasing down Talbot, running through a sinking ship and escaping the crumbling burning castle. To me, it blows away the train scene from U2 and escaping from armored car in U4. This is what fans should show other people when answering why Uncharted is awesome.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and it's alright if people dislike Drake's Deception, but I believe it deserves much more love and I'm glad people give it a second chance. After all, even if it has more flaws than usual it's still one of the best 2010's games and deserves to treated as essential example of good game development, at the very least it gave me a good time and it's all that matters.

Wow, thank you for sharing all of your thoughts! I love hearing all of these different perspectives.
I think we agree on just about everything! In terms of narrative, gameplay, or presentation, I'd argue that Drake's Deception tops Among Thieves in every regard. I also agree that Uncharted 3 has some of the most impressive action set pieces of the entire series. That plane level is just incredible.
I'll be publishing my video on Uncharted 4 tomorrow, I've love to hear your thoughts on that game when it goes live! Thanks again for watching :)

@Wilson-108 Honestly, I was very surprised to hear people's opinions on Drake's Deception(well, it's Internet, what should I expect?). I don't have PS Vita so I didn't experience Golden Abyss, but I think there are no bad games in mainline series, the only thing that can confuse is drastic difference of U4 from the previous three and Drakman storytelling style, but it's still a good game and fine end to the story(but details, of course must wait until the video)
P.S It's just always somehow painful when you enjoy the hell out of something and when you look for other people thoughts all they do is pointing out the flaws making you ashamed for keeping the game in high regard.
