    This one is my favorite in the series, with 2 very close behind. Nate wandering through the desert while Marlowe narrates poetry from T.S. Eliot. It felt so different from the rest of the games to that point. No one was trying to kill you. There was no intricate set design where the building or structure you were on was exploding/collapsing/on fire. Just Nate, alone. No quips, no jokes. Just stewing in how he’d failed after everyone warned him this would happen.

      I'm not so sure Uncharted should ever have been adapted to the big or the small screen. It was created as a playable movie-like experience with a bunch of gun fights and puzzles so it's difficult to break that down back into a movie without overdoing unrealistic fight scenes. That's why we got Nate and Chloe solving a puzzle in a Papa John's

    As an actual historian, I love the history of Uncharted 3 the MOST. It reminds me a lot of Raiders of the Lost Ark, T.E. Lawrence being a prevalent plot point for this as well as just seeing this adventure be as grand as possible, man it warms my heart. Uncharted is just the best man.

    The multiplayer in uncharted 3 hooked me to the point of playing it 5 years after everyone left out and went to other games. It wasn’t perfect by a LONGSHOT, but there was so many ways to play the game that it made it up for it. The maps weren’t annoying and compact enough to always find people and keep the action going. I would’ve loved it if they added the multiplayer back in the drake collection.

      Customizing your own villain and hero anyway you wanted was always dope. While then the levels were super interactive. Like the plane on the runway map or the flooded submarine base that would have certain parts of the map get flooded so you had to climb up and shit. So much fun.

    I believe Talbot was supposed to be a Djinn, that would explain how he disappears around that corner and after getting shot, comes back completely fine, some may think i'm reading to much into it, but the characters in the game are confused by both of these, and the game doesn't answer how Talbot does these things, why would the game put emphasise on these if the explanations are something like "oh he's fine after getting shot, he's just wearing a bulletproof vest" because that's really weak, I think they just didn't have enough time in development to reveal the Djinn twist and make a boss fight around that, so they dropped it.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the retcon of Nate's ring. I remember when I first played through this game on PS3, and they went into how he got the ring and what it meant to him, my first thoughts were, "Then no way he would have just wanted to chuck it in Uncharted 1!"

    • @jamesgray3797
      @jamesgray3797 Рік тому

      It wasn’t a retcon. From what I remember, near the end of uncharted 4- when Sam and the group are reunited Sam complains that because Elena and Sully don’t want to go for the treasure they just “don’t get it”. But Nathan replies to that with “they’ve seen this kind of obsession before”, Nate also adds to that with “we have nothing to prove”.
      Uncharted 3, at the end when saving Marlowe, has Nate finally giving up his title as best treasure hunter, he has nothing to prove but he does have people to lose, so when Marlowe begs him to save her, he tries without the want for his ring back too. And what does he say- he has nothing to prove
      That’s why uncharted 4 plays out the way it does- Nate got out of the treasure hunting life because of uncharted 3
      The ring was no retcon

      @@jamesgray3797 Yes it was. What you're describing with his changed attitude happens at the end of Uncharted 3. In Uncharted 1 we're lead to believe it was an inheritance, and just a means to get a treasure that ended up not being there, which is why he left the ring behind. In the flashback we play in Uncharted 3, we are shown he took the ring because he believed it was his birth right, and that the ring had a lot of value to him outside of being a means to a treasure. That's a huge retcon right there. Also with the ring having that much value to him, he wouldn't have just decided to leave it behind in Uncharted 1 like he did.

    This was actually my very first Uncharted game! I borrowed it from a teacher at school and just fell in love with the mechanics and especially the story! I remember feeling the exact same way as Nate did when Sully, supposedly, was shot after Nate drank from the fountain near the end.
    The music is another aspect that stuck with me! To the point that, as I type this, I have some of it playing in my head from memory! There are SO many memorable lines too! Nate, Sully and Cutter all get in some hilarious lines that always get a laugh out of me, despite playing this game so many times!
    I first played it in 2017 and since then, I’ve played and beaten it… I wanna say close to a dozen times now! Most of that was on PS3 and a few more runs on PS4 when I finally got that system in 2021. Maybe I was late to the party, but I don’t care! It became my favourite game of the series…
    Until I played Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End… THAT was an AMAZING experience to the point I double-dipped for the PS5 upgrade as one of my first games on the system when I recently bought a PS5! Looking forward to the Uncharted 4 review!

    1-4 they’re all masterpieces. I can’t play one of the games unless I go through them all bc I want that entire taste of adventure. Easily my favorite game franchise.

    Charlie is right though, phone contracts are ripoffs. I'll gladly pay 35 bucks a month for talk instantly and still be able to do everything a contract phone does.

    the 2 is and will always be my favourite. i had bought a ps3 that came with it back in the days and i had no idea what it was. i open the game like 1 years and a half after i bought the ps3 telling myself "lets try that shitty thing that came with the ps3". WOW. i was so blown away by what i was missing out! it became my favourite video game of all time until The Last of Us came out. Uncharted still my second favourite game close behind TLoU. But yeah the second will always have this special place in my heart because it was so out of nowhere for me when i first play this game i was totally expecting nothing and turns out to be Uncharted 2, imagine.

    Maybe because i noticed more details and then i got into history between times

    Uncharted 3 kinda let me down after 2. I’m playing the series through for the first time and everything good about two got used in 3, but either got overused or worse. The set pieces were amazing, but the platforming was clunky and moving in and out of cover felt sticky. The combat was improved with more cqc animations. But the gunplay was less impactful because enemies don’t respond to being shot until the third or fourth shot. Drakes Fortune had better gun play tbh. My favorite part of the game is seeing how NDI evolved as far as storytelling moments are concerned. Everything between Drake and Sully was awesome. But everything else in the story fell flat because the other characters were so uninteresting. There’s tons of storytelling and mechanical issues in 3 for me. I 100%ed it and looking forward to going back to 100% 2.
    I understand waiting until 3 came out when you were in to the series in the beginning changes your perspective. Because I’m late to the party and playing them all back to back. I did get to play 1 a little when I was younger, but I was always an Xbox kid. I never got to play a bunch of PS titles until my cousin came to live with me and introduced me to the PS2 & 3. My opinion doesn’t matter as much as players that were there from the beginning.

    Uncharted 3 is a great game and Ive always thought of it that way even after countless replays. Jak 3 is also picked on for no reason because it tries to be exactly like the second one but improve everything. Uncharted did just the same and in many forms it did it better than 2. Just because U2s story worked better, doesnt mean U3 as a game is crap.

    I feel like Uncharted 3 has the best set-up narrative of the trilogy, with just absolutely no payoff. I remember feeling like if a few things were just a little bit different, it would have been a lot better than it was. When I first played through Uncharted 3, and when I replayed it a few years later, I remember being SINCERELY impressed and excited about that first half of the game, learning a bit more about Nate's backstory, the interesting set-up with Talbot's strange otherworldly powers, it was all so interesting and then it went nowhere.

    Replaying 3 now. The game is the hardest in the series by far. Almost to a fault. It is an amazing game, though. The set pieces are the best in the series and the story is better than most remember. Also, how ND achieved those graphics on PS3 is mindblowing.

    Uncharted 3 has better shooting than Uncharted 2? Now that’s a hot take! I don’t think there’s anything that it does better which is why it is such an easy target as black sheep of the franchise. Upon release the shooting was somewhat broken, to the point where ND invited players from a popular message board to come in and show them what was wrong. A patch was then released but it never felt quite right. The trilogy collection went a longer way to adjust this but IMO there’s still something a little weird about it. Could be the relationship to AI & enemy hit boxes & animation. Story wise, UC2 is also much better paced. The action set pieces in 3, as you point out, felt very tacked on. I loved that clip you showed of the developers confirming that it was indeed the story itself which was tacked on. I think all games are incredibly hard to make, UC3 is no different, it just shows signs of that difficulty in the end more than one would hope. It feels (artfully) scotch taped together.

    • @CalvinCrack
      @CalvinCrack Рік тому

      @@MrCarpediem6 I do think something happened behind the scenes. For Hennig to walk (or be made to walk?) from such a solid position at a solid studio, coming off some of the best games ever doesn't seem like something that just happens organically. Shit got weird. And I've had a sour taste about the ND mgmt and Druckman ever since. Uncharted 4 was a high quality product, but was missing the fun pacing and energy that made the series what it is. And that's what you get from a writer and director.

    • @MrCarpediem6
      @MrCarpediem6 Рік тому

      @@CalvinCrack I think so.. and I think Drukman eventually left UC3, so he could focus on Last of Us. When the same thing happened in UC4, I think Drukman finally pulled the Thanos line and said "let me do it myself".. I think Henning liked a darker story, but Drkman anted to save the darker storytelling for the last of us?
