If they have a digital version on the store then the disk version will also have trophies as the disk itself will be more like a key to unlock the game like PC disks are as opposed to the place the game is stored and run from.
Basically sony says sony is giving players the finger ps4 can run all ps2 games perfectly on ps4 but sony dosent want to let you play disc or give you full compatibilty because they dont care theyd rather sell it back to us again. Full ps2 backwards compatibility died with ps3 and people wont accept that its why they hack every playstation console that comes out can it run ps2 no (secretly yes sony dosent give a shit) man though sony needs to bring back ps2 people love it that much theyd hack ps2 to get it again mainly what people want though is the next playstation console to have multi backwards compatibility ps1 ps2 ps3 etc i wish it would happen to dont get me wrong but im slowly giving up because sony is giving on backwards compatibility
Crazy to know that Sony's big boss said they didn't care about bringing PS3 games to PS4. Look at them now. Looks like Xbox is catching up on that bad start, and the great features presented are scaring Sony.
They would eventully need to do that, or else there would have dead products in store. PS4 simply had more importent problems then that and still have.
Robin Rutten This is exactly what i read. Such a bad move from Sony, as they insist on re-launching old games with a 1080p makeup. Microsoft not only allows you to play the games you already have, but also gives you each month 4 games for free. And from now on, the Games With Gold for 360 are going to be compatible with XOne straight away. Not to mention that, when Microsoft does a remaster, they REALLY do a remaster. Building the game from the scratch, as you can see in The Master Chief Collection and Gears of War Ultimate Edition.
Sony is asking nostalgic and loyal customers to pay in order to play their old already owned games. I think that it is nice that they revive ps2 games with better resolutions and an improved frame rate, but I don't think that honorable gamers should pay for this. Sony already makes a ton of money with the ps4. I should be implemented that a gamer gets access to a ps2 game if he inserts the original disc in his console. I use PCSX 2. Some games aren't compatible, some have minor graphical glitches but it works fine and runs fine: 1440p 60fps.
Look up the playstation 2's Emotion Engine chip. Until Sony figures out how to implement that architecture to their conformed architecture, that's the only true key to authentic backwards compatibility.
+This guy a 2nd disc drive!? Lol. The PS4 disc drive already reads CD-ROM, DVD, and Blu-Ray. PS3 and PS4 use the same exact Blu-Ray discs. PS4 is completely capable of reading every disc already.
wait, Battlefront 1 or 2 aren't included with this bundle? EA must be desperate to make sure that less people understand how much better the older Battlefronts are compared to their $110 turd of game that has one-fourth the content and features of the older games
+nickxcore74 It really is. You can pick up Battlefront 2 for $10 on steam right now. If someone never got a chance to play it then I recommend waiting for the steam sale and getting it for $3. Game looks great when all settings are on high.
+5persondude If you just yed Battlefront 2 for a few hours you would know that the game hasn't aged very well, its still fun but flawed as well. Nostalgia is a right bitch hu?
+Brecondo "Paragon of the Internet" I'm assuming it's SMAA or at least MLAA for the emulation. Most Ps2 games don't even use AA. If they do, then it's FXAA.
+∠∃иич Do you own a computer in your house? If so how much did you spend on it? If it was anywhere near 400 to 500 dollars that plus you own a game console which at launch cost around 400 to 500 dollars. So grand total is 800ish dollars give or take not included any games or controllers. Which makes the difference that much smaller so a 1000 dollars doesn't seem like that big of a deal if one where to make a gaming pc
+Johannes Gagnaas Pretty much. Not only that, but they're also upscaled with a higher resolution, a FAR better method of AA (anti-aliasing) assuming ps2 games even use AA, trophy support, higher frame rate, cleaner visuals, etc. It's quite impressive to say the least considering it's emulation.
For future PS2 videos, I wouldn't recommend using a back-compatible PS3. A lot of games have severe slowdown and frame rate issues, so it might not give an accurate representation of the original hardware.
***** I still play it on PS2, it's just PS4 would be more convenient now. I could do it now on PC, but it's not as convenient as turning on my PS2, or if this comes to PS4....
Were these game only available in the special edition of the ps4? I didn't see them on the psn store tuesday. I only saw the remaster of Super Star Wars. :(
Now if they could not the make the mistake of region locking them (as at this point it's full emulation so there is no reason too) then that'd be awesome
i honestly think it would be GREAT to have PS2 emulation! Even if we have countless remasters, there are some games that haven't been remastered. I only hope it will be like it was with the PS2, which allowed to play every game by simply inserting the disk. I'm afraid it'll be like xbox one, with only 100 selected titles to play.
+JippaLippa Hopefully for PS4 it'll grow into a larger list. i know that for the Xbox One that they're going to be constantly adding more games all of the time.
+Anigamer1983 As others have pointed out it's streaming and not emulation. Here we're talking about emulation and hopefully native backwards compatibility. With PS Now it does have a larger library at the moment, but you have to pay for the service to play old games, which is a downside. For PS4 I want to be able to put in the disk and play like you can with Xbox One.
+Anigamer1983 I have a lot of games on PS3 that won't get remasters, so you can throw that argument out of the window. Such games include the original Little Big Planet, haze, Farcry 3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Lair, and many others.
With these running standard x86 cores, most emulation shouldn't be an issue. Surprised they are not running at a higher resolution than what you all stated, to be honest.
This isn't all that impressive. The PS2 had 32MB of ram, 10 million transitors, a CPU that was clocked at 300 Mhz, 4MB of vram. The PS4 is roughly 50 times more powerful. While I think its great sony is doing this, people shouldn't be all that hyped up till Sony officially announces B/C for the PS4.
***** The ps3 (launch model) basically had a beefed up ps2 inside. The games were running on hardware instead of emulation. They eventually stripped it out and did emulation for a while but it wasn't nearly as good until they just completely removed backwards compatibility all together.
Yes! The only thing you will not be able to do (in the future) are the PS3 games. Sony confirmed that a while ago that backwards comparability will be available with PS1 and PS2 games; Not PS3 games due to the Cell modern board CPU used for the PS3. That's why we have PS Now. Which is PS3 games online.
+Pedro Granja It hasn't been confirmed yet, but since they keep saying "emulation" instead of streaming/or psnow...I would assume they mean pop-and play.
no. it's not going to be like the Xbox one backwards compatibility. Guarantee it's going to be a service where you have to pay to download the PlayStation 2 game to your Playstation 4.
Fascinating! If this really is emulation, then the frame rate jump and trophy support is incredibly exciting. Hopefully this is used in full forced by next year to support PS1/PS2 discs, I still have a huge collection that can do with some replaying and new trophies :D
Meanwhile I've been playing my PS2 games above 4k resolution with 16xAF, reshaders and MSAA etc for years now. "But you need a beast PC to emulate games and most of them don't work" Strange. My mid-range PC from 2008 had no trouble emulating PS2 games at 1080p/60fps and every game I have runs perfectly. Doesn't PCSX2 support something like 95% of the games library?
+steven langenheim Ps1/ps2 where the golden age of video games.(also n64). Besides the technical excuse is that ps3 cell architecture is leagues different then the ps4's.....
I laugh a lot with these double standards, Xbox one announces backwards compatibility and everyone say: "If i iwant to play old games, i have my x360", Sony announces Backwards emulation from a console of two generations ago and everyone is saying that Sony is GOD.
Well most people hear haven't got a PS2 anymore but it makes them strongly nostalgic when they hear they'll be able to play their old favourites again while xbox360s were as cheap as bricks and 99% of the people who bought an Xbox one still had the 360 but not the classic one, you don't usually find people keeping more than 2 generations at once max.
I realized that the architecture on the old playstation 1&2 are strategically made for it's own authenticity. Xbox's cpu instruction set was based off computer gaming from the jump, and that's why it is so difficult for Sony to have backwards compatiblity: the Emotion Engine chip in itself is extremely unique, so unique, that it would cost Sony much more to place in their consoles than to even sell them. That's why there is no backwards compatibility. Our old options are to play on PCSX2, subscribe to PS Now(lol), or just crank up that old playstation 2.
+MoviesForLife You said: "No, we really don't need any more remasters, just add PS3 emulation." I was simply trying to very briefly explain why PS4 can't play/emulate PS3 games. Without a CELL PROCESSOR, PS3 games can NEVER be played on any machine....Not this decade, anyways. Not on a PS4, not on a PS5........Not even if you built a $20,000 PC. That's all I was saying. That was my point.
only problem. is 99% wouldn't even touch a ps2 game cuz of the graphics as they bitch every day if the game isn't 1080p. so all that work will benefit maybe10% of gamers. big waste for Sony.
Wow this is incredible news. I still have my ps2 in nearly new condition, but if i could play ps2 games upscaled this way, i'd actually buy the system in a heartbeat.
This PS2 emulator for the PS4 looks sick so far! Since it's only in BETA at the moment, I can understand the lack of aspects that we all expect this emulator to have. It would certainly be nice for the emulator to provide a widescreen hack, in order to play literally every single PS2 game in true widescreen, which would be a major enhancement! Backwards compatibility has been a really important aspect to games consoles for such a long time now.
There are so many PlayStation and PlayStation 2 I'd love to play again via emulation on PlayStation 4. Dino Crisis, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Spyro The Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, God of War, Silent Hill 2 etc. I wonder if they could get added into the PlayStation Plus lineup? Would stop people complaining about constantly getting indies.
FisherMCboB 7 *Jak and Daxter, The Original Tomb Raider Games, MGS Games, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, DBZ Budokai 3, LOL The PS1 and PS2 Games are the BEST!!*
One word: ease. With PC you have to set up everything and it's not easy to play it on sofa when interface needs mouse and keyboard. On PS4, boot it up, everything works and everythings in right place out of the box and even controller buttons match up (even though you can use Dualshock 4 on PC directly, but still)
I see a lot of people commenting "who cares? PC has been doing PS2 emulation for years" but here's the thing, those emulators don't run 100% perfectly, especially PCSX2 in particular. I have an Intel core i5 4670K overclocked @ 4.0ghz and a GTX 760. While they may not be the most impressive processors around, they're still competent and are suitable for emulation. Even with that hardware, I still run into crashes, audio glitches, texture flickering, and various other problems. Try playing any of the Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter games on the most recent build of PCSX2. I can guarantee that you're going to have horrible framerates and have bizarre graphical glitches pop on screen. I mean sure, it may be playable on PC from beginning to end, but the PS4's emulator looks like it's doing a hell of a lot better...
BRING BACK YAKUZA Yakuza 2 is easily one of the best games on the system but no one played it because it came out in 2008. Damn game costs $80 nowadays, and PC emulation is playable but visually buggy.
Trophy support for games would be wild. Start on the games already available on the PS Store Classics, then move on to smaller gems of the PS2 era like Silent Hill 4, Rogue Legacy, Dark Cloud, Wild Arms 3, and Black!
Good start in the right direction. Let's hope more games everyone likes are made available. I've played emulators on PC and results can vary from game to game, so I'm not expecting miracles here. But really cool to see emulators being used well.
how is this any different from the PS2 emulation on PS3 games though? does it still require the original source code of the PS2 game, or does it run ISOs like this?
Wait, so if this happens, could you just put your ps2 disc in or does it have to be downloaded like ps now? cos I've still got loads of ps2 games, and i don't want to pay for them again
Is the sound any different, I experienced using emulators on my PC and later getting the game for the original hardware, the sound wasn't quite right when emulated it was just a little bit off?
So if there's a PS2 emulator can it also run PS1 digital titles? Is there a way to transfer your PSN titles to PS4? It's too bad Sony doesn't see the value in physical media and allow disc play.
Would've been nice if they could've at least fixed the audio glitches in Star Wars Racer Revenge (music & announcer voice randomly stop working during a race). these glitches were present on the original PS2 disc too.
It would be great if you could use this feature for original games straight from a disc, but I suspect it'll just be for titles bought from the PSN Store.
If i already have GTA san andreas for ps2, does it work on ps4? I mean am i forced to buy it on playstation store or can i use my ps2 disc of san andreas on the ps4?
Great analisys of the performace of both PS2 and PS2 emulation on PS4. One question. DOES (for example) the game Racer Revenge NOT buyed in the bundle has the same trophies achivements? Or any update in order to them to be available, or this is exclusive to this 3 versions that came with the Battlefront Bundle? Thxs. Great video.
I'd like to use the PS2 discs I already own to play classic games, not buy them again digitally.
+Jatworks_Swirl 🔺 the problem is how will the Trophy support work with the old disk versions?
If they have a digital version on the store then the disk version will also have trophies as the disk itself will be more like a key to unlock the game like PC disks are as opposed to the place the game is stored and run from.
Anime Games Online oh shit it's really you. Big fan

Same way Xbox does it, put the disc in and it recognizes it as a key for a digital copy of the game they put in the store
If sony could make this happen with every PS1 and PS2 game, I'd buy a PS4
Same here

+Typhonua If they release it later, then alright, but holy shit, that's idiotic. Way to punish people for buying their system at launch.

That's awesome! This is such an awesome Channel!
only problem. is 99% wouldn't even touch a ps2 game cuz of the graphics as they bitch every day if the game isn't 1080p. so all that work will benefit maybe10% of gamers. big waste for Sony.
Fuck star wars game, I want GTA 5 on PS2 :D

1080p60fps on ps2 games been doing that on my laptop for years now XD
+TheLenny655 Good on you kid.
***** dafuq you on about homeboy
Wow this is incredible news. I still have my ps2 in nearly new condition, but if i could play ps2 games upscaled this way, i'd actually buy the system in a heartbeat.
nice really nice
This PS2 emulator for the PS4 looks sick so far! Since it's only in BETA at the moment, I can understand the lack of aspects that we all expect this emulator to have. It would certainly be nice for the emulator to provide a widescreen hack, in order to play literally every single PS2 game in true widescreen, which would be a major enhancement! Backwards compatibility has been a really important aspect to games consoles for such a long time now.
I would love to get 007 Nightfire, 007 Everything or Nothing, Tony Hawk Underground 1-2, and Splinter Cell 1-3 on PS4.
That would be sweet.
The JOY of finally finishing Persona 3 FES on my PS4! Please I hope this happens.
Interesting....
Wow, ps4 still can't get a solid 60fps on a decade old game? Wait, that's not a surprise. Nevermind.
Food can't talk.
"Emulation"
Its an emulator, Not a remake jesus fucking christ.
+A Doughnut Um...Do you know what emulation is?
Or are you one of those that go with a crowd cause you have no place in this world?
Who cares?!
Soooo... If they added achievements, sorry... It's not emulation... it's a port...
so ps4 cant even run ps2 games at native 1080p? see you console fanboys down below
+EZOVERDOSE Nice b8 m8.
+EZOVERDOSE problem is most ps2 games where interlaced i dont know how to get clean 1080p out of 480i has to be scaled at some point
emko333
probably need a bigger flux capacitor
I don't care. Do you?
What about Gran Turismo 3!? Damn i miss that game
first dislike
*Ahahahaha, Salty!*
+Yeshua Ha Mashiach why would he be salty. who the fuck wants to play ps2 games. the only good ps2 is battlefront 2.
+FisherMCboB 7 game^*
FisherMCboB 7
*Jak and Daxter, The Original Tomb Raider Games, MGS Games, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, DBZ Budokai 3, LOL The PS1 and PS2 Games are the BEST!!*
+Yeshua Ha Mashiach those games we're pretty good back in the day. I still have my ps2 tried playing some games it was tough. lol
Why would anyone care about this when you can just get a PS1 / PS2 emulator on PC?
+1
*Get a Life Gimp.*
Yeshua Ha Mashiach that's a nibble
+Solaire It's called consoles catching up years later.
How long has Ps2 emulation been around for on PC, 10 years now?
One word: ease.
With PC you have to set up everything and it's not easy to play it on sofa when interface needs mouse and keyboard. On PS4, boot it up, everything works and everythings in right place out of the box and even controller buttons match up (even though you can use Dualshock 4 on PC directly, but still)
How the hell did you manage to record quite a sharp quality of the PS2 gameplay?
oooh, that would be so awesome! would love to play the onimusha games! totoally missed them during the ps2 times
DF... do u plan on doing speed test comparisons between Xbox One's new UI, and PS4's UI?
BRING BACK YAKUZA
Yakuza 2 is easily one of the best games on the system but no one played it because it came out in 2008. Damn game costs $80 nowadays, and PC emulation is playable but visually buggy.
Consoles catching up to PC a decade later, as usual.
Nice bait.
Para Soul But true.
William Fenton But why come here just to put people down? That's just sad.
But this is official, not a illegal way ^^ (pirate).
+William Fenton consoles have been doing emulation for years dude, where the heck have you been ?
Trophy support for games would be wild. Start on the games already available on the PS Store Classics, then move on to smaller gems of the PS2 era like Silent Hill 4, Rogue Legacy, Dark Cloud, Wild Arms 3, and Black!
+metalninja7 I realize I meant Rogue Galaxy not Rogue Legacy, both incredible games
Good start in the right direction. Let's hope more games everyone likes are made available. I've played emulators on PC and results can vary from game to game, so I'm not expecting miracles here. But really cool to see emulators being used well.
how is this any different from the PS2 emulation on PS3 games though?
does it still require the original source code of the PS2 game, or does it run ISOs like this?
this is fantastic. It's not last gen emulation, but it could reignite interest in some classics, especially with the younger audience of gamers :)
I am so impressed how good some of these ps2 games can look. Like wow!
Dude I hope they look more into ps2 ports because Jak and D etc would still look great on this emulation I'm seeing here
I love this background soundtrack.
Wait, so if this happens, could you just put your ps2 disc in or does it have to be downloaded like ps now? cos I've still got loads of ps2 games, and i don't want to pay for them again
So is the PS4 now backwards compatible with PS2 titles
nice, i like classic games on ps4, its sometimes nice to play vintage games instead of bf4 and swbf
Is the sound any different, I experienced using emulators on my PC and later getting the game for the original hardware, the sound wasn't quite right when emulated it was just a little bit off?
So how does it exactly work? I simply put PS2 game into my PS4 and it runs? I don't wanna mess up my console. Can someone clarify it for me?
So, are we gonna have all the ps2 games in HD? D:
I'd love to play Bounty Hunter again. Played that game so much back in the day. Would be good to get Battlefront 2 as well.
Are ps2 games going to be all digitally or pop in old ps2 games on ps4?
Wait how did he get this? Are they going to have emulated ps2 games in the ps4?
So if there's a PS2 emulator can it also run PS1 digital titles? Is there a way to transfer your PSN titles to PS4?
It's too bad Sony doesn't see the value in physical media and allow disc play.
Now what I want to know is... Will I be able to stick my old PS2 discs in the PS4?
I would really appreciate it if they would make it backwards compatible with ps2 discs... That would really be a big plus.
Hmm, so if I own a collection of 100-200 ps2 game discs can I play them on my ps4 or will I have to buy them all for 10-20 dolars each?
Would've been nice if they could've at least fixed the audio glitches in Star Wars Racer Revenge (music & announcer voice randomly stop working during a race). these glitches were present on the original PS2 disc too.
Wow this is awesome. I might think about getting one if they start supporting more games.
So does this work witht he actual PS2 disc or you have to purchase the game form PSN?
I want it to be like XBONE backwards compatibility, where I can just pop in the disk and play PS2 games
Does this mean we'll be able to use original PS2 discs?
How does this emulation work I popped in Ratchet & Clank nothing happened?
wait,...they had trophy support ? wow, that nice addition on that
It would be great if you could use this feature for original games straight from a disc, but I suspect it'll just be for titles bought from the PSN Store.
If i already have GTA san andreas for ps2, does it work on ps4? I mean am i forced to buy it on playstation store or can i use my ps2 disc of san andreas on the ps4?
Damn I'm surprised. They actually seem to have been able to match ps2's image quality. I was scared it would be worse.
Thxs. Great video.
maybe one day i'll be able to play my favorite games again, but in full hd
This is my dream, hope to play the discs!!
Sad thing is I get more enjoyment emulating old PS1, PS2, N64, GC games than I have this entire generation.
