'We had the back of Maggies hand' Absolute brilliant lyric, brilliant song. Gives me goose pimples every time I hear this. Brilliant link to the best tv programme ever
German beer is chemical free, german is alright with me. Indeed. Great song by even greater artist. Long live Knopfler. Was on his consert couple years back and he was great.
I was on a Knopfler's concert just the other week and they played this, the shouts sounded great live. Not to even mentioned Mark's unbelieveable playing, the band consisted of master musicians alike.
The song is pure excitement - building rhythm, Mark's deep and beautiful voice, his soaring lyric solos, strong men's harmony, tight instrumentation, the great ballad of his upbringing and the hearty Scottish greeting, "Wae aye man!" Fabulous. Thanks.
Shear brilliance. The lyrics just roll along, so much light and shade in this song. The subtleties of the the guitar playing with the backing, beautifully mixed.
The song is a bit of a story, about builders leaving Newcastle to find work in Germany, becuase of unemployment in the 1980s. The references are clearly not of people going to Newcastle, but reluctantly leaving it behind. It's pretty much like the story of the TV series "Auf Weidersehn Pet" and was used as the theme to the third series.
'Why aye, man' is a term we use in the North east of England (Newcastle and Sunderland) and it really just means 'yeah, of course'. Its just a way of saying 'yeah' but with more emphasis. It is usually said with a bit of character and is friendly or jokey. It is used regularly in everyday language. The term isnt used anywhere else in Britain. There are many other terms used in North East English language that are not used anywhere else. Hope this helps marra.
pedro111nufc, Sorry. I did a random google search and stupidly thought I was educated about Georgies. Thank you for correcting me and all the other people who want to speak without enough knowledge ;-)
LIVE LONG TEAM JOYCE BRIDGIANA AND MÌLANTE THEIR ALL OVER 100 PLZ PRAY THEY STAY STRONG AND HEALTHY AND RAISE IT IN A MEGA HALLELUJAH COMING FROM NORTHERN IRELAND AND ANN WHOS ON HER ROAD TO RECOVERY RAISE A MEGA HALLELUJAH 🌍🍀🙏🏿🙏🏻💯♥️
Really great vidéo :) Look like it's this John Isley from the old dire straits times who play bass guitar and the same guy than in the on every streets tour who plays saxophone :)
Beautiful Song... Why aye man, pronounced to sound something like "wye eye mon" is indeed a typical Geordie (Northeastern England) greeting. It means nothing more than hello or how are you doing?
Not Scotland, England. The river Tyne runs through Newcastle, Mark Knopfler's home town. And not Scottish, Geordie. Which is the name of people originating from that area and also of the dialect spoken by the locals.
ay ya still a geordie if yoove lived in canada for 27 years but were born in tha North East marra? By the way our Jimmy still rocks crocadile shoes and all.
Amazing, great lyrics, great guitars, can anyone hear in the verse a pure golden sound of a guitar, those ringing cords, it is not MK. Can anyone identify it? about the 4:00 minute mark
Jimmy Nail is fit as fuck in thos glasses!! he has definately got better looking as he got older. But then again I always had a thing for him as Oz back in the 80's. he always looked as though he would give you a good night!!
I love this song, and it's a shame that some people use these comment boxes to be abusive and rant obscenities. The series that had this song as it's theme tune was one of the greatest ever on TV. I am not a Geordie, and therefore not biased, but even if I was, I wouldn't stoop so knuckle draggingly low as to post such drivel.
Superb song, With a lot of other Brits I worked in Germany in the 1970`s, thrown out of work by the tory bastards we were economic refugees just like the poor buggers from eastern europe now trying to earn a living in the UK
Alright, I admit that was a no-brainer, but do you think they teach us History or Geography here In the US? I just learned England is not a country occupied by France....and I learned that by watching The Holy Grail... Knig-its! Right?
Mark Knopfler's guitar sound has been haunting me for decades. I'll never figure out how he makes the guitar sound so distinct; he's a real artist.

One of the best songs of Mark's solo career..Just beautiful, I love the end...Thanks for posting it....
MK exudes so much passion in every song or piece of music that he plays
Because todays (most famous) musicians are appreciated for their image rather than their talent. Or lack of talent.
Shear brilliance. The lyrics just roll along, so much light and shade in this song. The subtleties of the the guitar playing with the backing, beautifully mixed.
Excelent! Glad to find this live! Two excelent geordie boys singing one amazing somg. NEWCASTLE FOREVER!
It is from one of the charity gigs at the Shepherds Bush Empire in 2002. It was officially recorded by Mecury Records
Thats Jimmy Nail...One of Marks biggest fans...also wrote an excellent song called 'Big River' which featured Mark!
I love this song. Mark does a great job as always. Nadine
I think this is one of my favorite Mark Knopfler songs. Thanks for the great post.

Being half German and half US cowgirl I really like these lyrics..
Best mark for Mr Knopfler !
The chorus ("wye eye, wye eye, wye eye man")was used at the end of episodes for series 3
Jimmy Nail. The origional Why Aye man .
love this ballad. A song for the constructionman. Why can't the U.S. workingman have a song like this?
Really great vidéo :) Look like it's this John Isley from the old dire straits times who play bass guitar and the same guy than in the on every streets tour who plays saxophone :)
Yep, I reckon it is! Also singing backing vocals and looking like he's enjoying himself!
He was born over the border and was brought up here in newcastle,in my eyes he`s a geordie
I agree. I never even knew that he was born in Glasgow until fairly recently and I got quite a shock when I saw it.
