He said in a book I read once he practised so much he used to wake up sometimes in the early hours with his guitar , where instead of going to bed he fell asleep playing guitar . A bit like Hendrix , hus guitar hardly left his side .Joe Brown used to go to work on a scooter in his early days with guitar over his shoulder .Dedication ( as Mark says ) is the key.And not many of us have it .
I remember, towards the end of the 90's, me, a young Moroccan at the time, living in the little-known town of "Taza" in eastern Morocco. I often took the old train towards an other city "Oujda", where I continued my studies. The journey, lasting nearly 3 hours, traversed almost desert-like landscapes, familiar to my eyes. To stave off boredom, I would slip a Dire Straits cassette into my walkman and let their songs play: "Where do you think you're going", "you and your Friend", "Telegraph Road", "Sultans of swing"... But when "Brothers in Arms" started, I don't know how or why, time seemed to stand still. And now, after 25 years, when I listen to this song, all those images come flooding back, and I feel that same sensation. For me, nothing compares to this Masterpiece.
I am 52 and have listened to this song since I was 15 and to this day I reckon this has to be the best written song ever and the guitar play by Mark Knopfler is absolutely brilliant.
Goosebumps. All over. My grandma recently passed away, and had written down that she wanted this song played at her funeral. She didn't get it, because my family is cheap, so I went to her grave after the ceremony and played it for her.
This has to be one of the most touching songs ever written. And no, Knopfler isn't one of the best guitarists ever--he's one of the best musicians ever! Writer, guitarist, Lyricist, and "emotional singer". Brothers in arms, telegraph road, romeo and juliet, last laugh, etc, etc. He is amazing.
This old Soldier first heard this profound song over 35 years ago, and it still brings tears to my eyes. To all of my Brothers and Sisters in arms around the World, hear the words and feel the pain that we have suffered and inflicted. We are fools to make war on our Brothers in Arms. Peace must prevail!
You do what your trained to do. Not what you have to deal with when you come home. That is the injustice of all veterans of war. I lost a friend recently and have only just understand his own suitation. My heartfelt condolences to all veterans and their own families.
It has been said, "Old Soldiers never die, they simply fade away." We've moved to "our valleys and our farms" but the memories are still real. Some days more than others. We who have survived witness as our brothers are called to higher service as we wait our turn. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. No matter who or where you fought you are my brother. So many different wars then and now. Let us keep in our thoughts and prayers our brothers and sisters who have to fight these wars, often against their will, for the benefit of, or against evil leaders who use war as a way the achieve their political power and material wealth.
From Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia & Bosnia ❤️. I know when the sun goes to hell, it can be hard to remember how warm & bright it used to be😢?. Brother's in arms. Bracha zauvek!!.
My wife and I were there that night, as guests of my brother who was the sound engineer for the tour. Fantastic night, fantastic music, so many memories. Were part of the end of tour party, spending quality time with the band. My framed and signed tour poster and group photo still hang proudly in my mancave.
65 years. I've been listening to this song over and over since it was released in may 1985. Sometimes it brings to my memory beautiful moments, others cold, fears, uncertainty. It's not just a song, it is a part of my life. Thank you Mark, thank you.
Count those years again you absolute buffoon. UA-cam can do without that type of stupidity! In fact, what age are you? Ask your next door neighbour to count the years.
My Dad was a huge Dire Straits fan, he would play the albums over and over. We would go out for a pint and he would put Sultans on the jukebox about 10 times lol. I played Brothers in Arms at his funeral. It was a long time before I could listen to this song again, hits me hard. As a guitar player myself I always appreciated the genius of Knopfler, I grew to appreciate the music more later in life though. Dad never got to see them live, he would certainly have loved it.
Definitely got your money's worth on a jukebox w that song. Sorry for your loss. Glad you've moved on bc there are likely people that need the best version of you bc they depend on you. Good luck.
I know exactly how you feel Rob. My father was a regular serviceman in the Royal Marine Band during WW2. He played tenor sax and violin. When not on musical duties he aimed the ships big guns (a good mathematician) and was also ship's tailor. He saw HMS Hood sunk by the Bismarck and lost many friends that day. But he got his revenge. He was a big gun aimer on HMS Norfolk and sunk the Bismarck with a little help from his Brother's in Arms. He also escorted many convoys to Murmansk, that was dangerous work but he survived WW2 unscathed and was present when the Japanese surrendered. He claimed to have visited every country in the world with a coastline except the american continent as being a regular he had a long career and took part in many goodwill visits around the world playing on shore at functions and receptions - his band was very good at Glenn Miller numbers. In later life he stil loved all kinds of music, his only stipulation was that modern bands should be able to play their instruments in his judgement. His favourites were Mark Knopfler and Van Morrison, he even appreciated the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. We remember our fathers fondly.
Mark Knopfler - Living Legend. One of my favorite guitar player of all time. I have a high-end sound system and his recordings are so well done. It's so enjoyable to listen to his music. Never gets old...
Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitars to ever walk this Earth in my opinion. He is a master at his craft of writing music and playing his guitar. He's a class act. I'm 55 years old and has been listening to him since he started with the Dire Straits in 1970s. There are a lot of versions of this song out on video. To me this is the best version he ever put out. Again just my opinion. Thank you Mark Knopfler
@@sergeantmasson3669 I love every version of this masterpiece but the version that gets to me is at Mandela's birthday. Mark is really into it and showing strong emotion to the very end.
I´m also 55 and I agree with you, this version is the best I know. There are not so many music pieces that give me cold shivers over my back, every time I hear them. This is one of those.
I am an ex-soldier served in the infantry for 27 years with many missions this song is a baulm on our hearts. God this song will always be powerful. Thank you Mark Knopfler 👊
I don't know if you could ever understand, the great music you made, and what for a 11 years old kid was in 1990 going to sleep with his walkman listening to this, in the darkness, with his eyes closed and the only company of the melody and feelings of this guitar... every night. That cassette was most of his universe. And now, at his 41 listening to it and still loving it. Only thank you.
Dani, I don't know where you live, where you are from, but I feel the same. I'm just 1 year older and Brother in arms was one of the two albums that I used to listen all the time when I was a child (the other was The Wall, Pink Floyd...) I always found this song so...calm, even I didn't understand the lyrics (I'm french) when I was 11 years old as you were. Probably, not understanding the lyrics made more simple to let my mind floating in the universe with the music... Greetings from France Brother in arms!
Same here. I got in bed and starten this cassette. My bedroom was next to my moms. Now she is sick with cancer. And wants this singel to be played at her funeral.
I’m not a veteran, well not a war vet, just life. This has always been my ‘reaching for something’ music. This one in particular makes a mark on my soul. Every single time. I’m an 84: year old woman.
Am I the only one who found himself crying silently full of peace and joy? Tha acoustic guitar touched me as deep as never before. This version is absolutely special and delicious.
Peace and joy? This song is purely about lives needlessly wasted in war. This song is unadulterated pain and sadness and suffering. That guitar is weeping.
I’ve been listening to this album for decades. This poignant, empathetic song on the album is a true masterpiece. Never tire of listening to Mark Knopfler play and sing.
I am a retired firefighter from USA. When I hear this song about the Brothers in Arms, I am reminded of my own Brothers in Arms in the Fire Service. I was from a department that had an exposure to some terrible cancer causing chemicals and most of my mentors and brothers in arms I served those years with are now deceased. In some cases I was on a shift of people that faced all the dangers and death and destruction and now I alone am left alive. He captures the feelings I have about my brothers and sisters, both those who are left behind and those who are gone. But I know the bonds that are forged in such circumstances, and that even though the brothers come from different worlds and many times they are very different kind of people, you know you share that bond of shared experience and trust that is created in time of danger and facing tragedy together.
Australian fire rescue and hazmat member here. What you say is very true. Our station call each other brother for the bonds made in facing danger and adversity are strong and enduring. I know every one of them has my back and I have theirs. All who have served have our respect and are remembered. Thank you for your service to your community brother and thanks to those who you have lost along the way.
I relate to this song the same as you, my brothers were lost not in the World Trade trenches but rather Iraq and Afghanistan. Same war- different battle. Thank you and all of our brothers and sisters in arms for your service to humankind.
I'll be 60 years old in two days time, I first saw Dire Straits live in 1979, last time I saw Mark in Concert was 2019 pre-covid. Hope to keep on seeing him for many years to come. Absolute musical genius.
I’m a Vietnam Vet. When I heard this the first time I cried the tears of a baby. Only a combat vet can understand how much this song is true in every word. Don’t think for one second that I believe any of you don’t feel the words, I know you do. I’m talking of a visceral, deep in the bones, feeling. One that goes far beyond just feeling the song. Now it’s so many years since this was released and still I cry when I hear it. Thank you Mark for writing this and for giving such a heartfelt performance each and every time. I love your work.
Missouri Male I just walked through the Remnants Museum in Saigon today. One room was full of drawings made by children who have tried to tell us through their art how they cope without limbs and with their horribly deformed bodies, just some of the 170,000 victims of agent orange, now into its 4th generation of defects. In another room I read there have been 104,000 victims of land mines and uxo since 1975. 18% of the country is so contaminated it will take another 100 years before people can walk around without worrying it will be their last step. Add to this the 2 million Vietnamese civilians killed by the bombings and torture and massacres, the 1 million killed revolutionary fighters, plus all the horrors inflicted on villages in neighbouring Laos and Cambodia. Adds up to a LOT of wasted lives.
The wonderful, incomparable Eagles. The soundtrack to my teenage years in Wales. My best friend and I knew every word of every song. She sadly died young. Many years later Glenn Frey wrote this wonderful song. His goodbye, his last message to his family, his fans and the world. It will be my goodbye too when the day comes. RIP Mr Frey. Possibly the greatest song writer the world has ever known. Thank you for the music. 🎶 😢
Being a veteran paratrooper, at 67 years old now...i am losing so many brothers in arms. I ride my motorcycle all over Canada and the states....for my mental health and memories of my brothers in arms. We were Soldiers.
When I was born, Mr. Mark was already singing and it was already a hit. Today I am an adult, I already have children, I continue to listen to him and he is getting better and better. May God continue to protect you so that you can continue to offer us these beautiful melodies.
He is not underrated !……’Described by Classic Rock as a virtuoso, Knopfler is a fingerstyle guitarist and was ranked 27th on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". With Dire Straits, Knopfler sold between 100 million and 120 million records.
@@ravingmavis5801 Well pardon me. I'm guessing Rolling Stone's ratings are based on solid science and proven algorithms. How about if I say I think he's underrated. Better?

Truly brilliant piece of compassionate music every time I hear it I cry for the pain and destruction in the world, I love it so much it opens my heart on so many levels.
I grew up on this music. . In a small town in Botswana; I was raised on a healthy hint of Dire Straits and Queen... in very little places that both MK and Freddy have never been to and probably never knew exist. But we did. Over here in the poor backdrop of the ghetto. I listened to 'so far away from you".... I loved 'Why Worry'. And today, at 50, this.... "Brothers in arms'; takes the biscuit. My absolute favourite. ❤
I don’t know if this matters to you, but I think of all the people in all the places I will never be and I do care. We are none of us so far apart or so different as we are made to believe.
Yeah they're the best...I'm 53, grew up in Perth, Western Australia. 70's kids rock !!! I'm well aware of your beautiful country of Botswana. Australian's can be a bit ignorant sometimes, like thinking Africa is a country...lol. 🤣🤣
Seen Alchemy being played live on on an Autumn's night in Punchestown Eire . Had all my best mates & brothers a good smoke and my girl at the time . Sheet Magic jaw dropping beautiful & a day nobody there will ever forget . Thanks to one of the Greatest bands to ever exist .
"It's written in the stars, and every line in your palm. We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms." As beautiful, heartfelt and powerful today as it ever was.
This is the most respectful song I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing. I’ve been listening to it for over 35 years now. Sadly, it becomes more meaningful as the world moves on.
Mark is one of those musicians, though great when he hit the scene in my high school years, has improved. Aging has added a soulful sound to his voice. And, he always surrounds himself with equally talented musicians.
Me and my brother served; (navy and air force). This song always brings me to tears. Lost my brother in 2023. Now I listen to it alone! Rest in heaven, brother. We will meet again.
Veteran Brother, Hang in there and know they are near... for our loved ones are in all things in the realm of we all being Spiritual beings. I served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era... lost a dear friend 9-16-1970 who was a Marine tank assault rifleman. Our birthdays were the same day just 2 years different. Lance Corporal William Franklin. As long as we continue on in life, as they would want us to... just give kindness somewhere to someone. They are closer to you than you think! Thank you for serving this Country we once had. Semper Fi! Namaste.

Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists there have ever been
💖💖🙏
He said in a book I read once he practised so much he used to wake up sometimes in the early hours with his guitar , where instead of going to bed he fell asleep playing guitar .
A bit like Hendrix , hus guitar hardly left his side .Joe Brown used to go to work on a scooter in his early days with guitar over his shoulder .Dedication ( as Mark says ) is the key.And not many of us have it .
no question; and he plays without a pick....incredible!!
@@sean8470 Yes, no pick .I have been playing for years, and I have tried but simply cannot use a pick.
@@John-ob7dh I love finger picking on guitar. Classical gas in one of my favorite songs to play.
I'm so grateful for an audience that's not hooting and hollering and whistling through the whole thing. This audience understood the respect.
They are Germans.
That would be like hollering while Ennio morricone was conducting Gabriel's Oboe.
This song commands respect, by nature of it’s meaning.
Yeee haaaa. Woooooo.
There are moments that ya just need to sit back and rest in the greatness of another...This was a masterclass.
Cassette and walkman, we are both showing our age LOL... but yep great music never fades

Pure genius right in front of your eyes. Such a privilege to be alive at this time.
Parabéns irmão pelas palavras
Thank you for your service. But, I truly agree with all that you said. Peace is the only way.

100% He is Fabulous
Who's to say that he doesn't see them play now. I'd love to believe that we can see things like this when we've left this world

Mark Knopfler - Living Legend. One of my favorite guitar player of all time. I have a high-end sound system and his recordings are so well done. It's so enjoyable to listen to his music. Never gets old...

Me emocionei com seu depoimento guerreiro!! SENSACIONAL!!!

Similar, but I grew up in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and I’m 49. Was introduced to Dire Straits at around age 13. Been a loyal disciple since.
Take care ❤
I don’t know if this matters to you, but I think of all the people in all the places I will never be and I do care. We are none of us so far apart or so different as we are made to believe.
Yeah they're the best...I'm 53, grew up in Perth, Western Australia. 70's kids rock !!! I'm well aware of your beautiful country of Botswana. Australian's can be a bit ignorant sometimes, like thinking Africa is a country...lol. 🤣🤣
❤❤🫡🇿🇦😊
The jacket the hairstyle. Iconic. followed by millions. That’s the legend. Some artists will never be repeated. ❤❤❤❤
One of the best artists and songs ever! I truely appreciate this man and his talent! 💗👍
We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms."
As beautiful, heartfelt and powerful today as it ever was.
It started by killing all the Indians and buffalos and it never stopped but the devils are in the light now, we know them
Paz e amor sempre❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is the most respectful song I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing. I’ve been listening to it for over 35 years now. Sadly, it becomes more meaningful as the world moves on.
It's so powerful and beautiful ✌🏻
yes Dee

Definitely a music genius, the most powerful notes I ever heard. And I've been listening since 1960......
One of THE greatest musical humans to ever grace this Earth. A true legend.
...
I'm Happy to love & have her close to me...
Heaven sent! Amen Bro!
A true legend what a beautiful talent thank you
Yes
Mark is one of those musicians, though great when he hit the scene in my high school years, has improved. Aging has added a soulful sound to his voice. And, he always surrounds himself with equally talented musicians.
Well said
The most beautiful song there is. MK has always been my hero since i was a little kid. ❤️
By this brilliant piece of musical poetry, Mark Knopfler speaks to my soul.
Tears are running.
I’m with you
100% Every time.
Such tears are special and neverending...
Thanks that you are here...

Semper Fi! Namaste.
thank you for your service, Sorry for your loss 🙏
Ur bro in you bro
Sorry for your loss dude 🙏

I swear they could comb the internet, up and down, left and right, back and forth... and they wouldn't find a single bad comment about this guy. That is an astonishing deed in itself. We all love you, Mark.
