    The weather hasn't been great, but decided to head over to the Eden Wharf and try my luck. The Mackeral are everywhere at the moment and for just a couple hours of fishing, it was a busy session. Enjoy!

    Cold, windy, chance of rain and one of the BETTER days in the forecast? Ugh…
    That little mackerel was like “Nooooooooooooo!” Those gulls sure swept in quick to get that dropped bait. That pelican wanted his too.
    Those mackerel are hilarious the way they vibrate their way free lol
    That hydrophobic lens must not work with the fish blood. Good catches and convo Larry - nice!👌👏

      It usually is mild here on the coast for winter, but its been a cold month and looks to continue and I hate the cold LOL Damn birds and Pelicans, but at least they're a bit slower and yeah, the lens didn't like that blood drop, didn't notice until I got home. Thanks Joe!

      Looking at the average, its about 3-4 degrees below the norm, but its the wind from the south and west, just goes right through you when out there. Shorter sessions on the cards for a little while. Thanks as always for watching!

    Making me want to pack up and head down for a few days, looks like nothing but rain here for the next 10 days....
    One of the best baits you can the slimeys, I would definitely be throwing them straight back out live.
    Good to see some fish making it back, without the pesky birds getting them.
    All in all what a great session, plenty of fish biting and plenty of bait caught for next time 👍
    There has to be kingfish there somewhere smashing them slimeys...

      Hard time getting anything else with them everywhere, but fun to catch and saved some for bait. Looks like its going to get wet down here too, though the weather outlook keeps changing so who knows. I'm told there are Tuna out at the Naval Wharf right now, but its closed with a ship docked over there grrrrrrr LOL

    Mate, I operate on a policy of not throwing macks back when I can get a few. Frozen or salted they make excellent baits for times of the year they are not around. Crying watching you throwing back some perfectly great bait. Good fun to catch though :D
    Had a session free baiting mack fillets the other night and got a few really solid Tailor and trevs.

    • @LarrysFishing
      @LarrysFishing  Місяць тому

      @@matjames4743 2 options. Just a hook with bait, no sinker. I also use a pre-made rig with a weight on the bottom and 2 hooks above. Called a river rig or a high/low rig.

      @@LarrysFishing awesome thanks Larry, will give it a go

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman Місяць тому

      @@matjames4743 The rule of thumb I always go by is as little weight as you need to get to where the fish are. The Paternoster rig described by Larry with a weight at the bottom and a couple of droppers is very efficient, effective and popular. Other rigs include just a running sinker on a mainline above a swivel/ring to an unweighted leader, a small running sinker to the hook and float rigs. These are all useful in their own situations. What type of fish you target will also affect the rig used.
      Bream, whiting, flatties, snapper and luderick/drummer will be hanging out near bottom, so use the Paternoster or sinkered rigs to get down to this zone.
      Tailor, salmon, trevally and macks etc will be free roaming and much less weight/freebaiting is the go for them. Get the bait down just a little in the water column and allow it to drift with the flow.
      Wait for the line to tighten properly before striking. There is an amazing number of pickers and you have to allow them to pick before a bigger fish comes along. Don't just strike at every little pick though, you will never have a bait in the zone if you do. When you get a good hit, you will know. The line will tighten and run suddenly. However, there are many fish that just pick up and mouth the bait. If you get some good solid action on the line, but it is not running, lift the rod solidly, but controlled, to see if you can pin the fish. The idea is to put as much force as required to pin the fish without moving the bait too far. So you don't want to whip the strike like you see many people doing. Just lift the rod along its length and if weight is felt add a bit more force as you lift the tip into the strike. It can often work well to slow roll the bait a couple of winds every few minutes or if you have a non-commiter. Just slowly moving the bait along with the rod tip can also get an interested fish to commit.
      Best thing to do is find a fishy area with clear water allowing a good view, get some polaroid sunnies and watch how fish approach and react to baits. So much learned from doing this.
      Have a great time and I hope you catch a whale to introduce you to the salties!
