WWF Smackdown! was released for the PlayStation back in 2000. Following the likes of WWF War Zone and WWF Attitude, the game gave wrestling fans a brand new way to play WWF matches on console and thanks to new developer Yukes working on the game, WWF Smackdown on PS1 was very different to past PS1 WWF games.
While not exactly similar, WWF Smackdown took inspiration from the previous AKI games by greatly simplifying the controls. War Zone and Atittude forced players to use button combinations in order to pull off basic moves. In Smackdown, everything was made way more accessible and easy with a much more approachable control scheme; anyone could pick up Smackdown and master the game. Feedback was very positive, and so began a long lasting relationship between Yukes and the WWF that brought us the Smackdown series of games (including Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth and Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain). The succesful run of Smackdown games can all be traced back to Smackdown 1 on PS1.

omg I asked for this after vendetta ty ty
i hated GM mode
Power Move kind of reminds me of Legends Of Wrestling
No
Man this game was groundbreaking at the time
This and Smackdown 2 were the bars set for me with wrestling games
Yall must've nvr played wrestlemania 2000 or no mercy the only thing those smackdown games had was dope intros
@@jordanflores5687 i played all of that but there's no debating that the 1st smackdown game was definitely a game changer. You knew that it was something special.
@@solidussnake2987 I mean maybe at the time but even then no mercy was far better like I said before the intros were the only thing better it was fun I owned it dont get me wrong but game changer and groundbreaking???? Ehhh l
No mercy is one of the greatest video games ever created. By far. People still play that to this day
As a person that only played the PlayStation wrestling games smackdown blew my mind when I first saw it and I begged my mom for a month straight to buy it for me. One day I came home from school went to play OG GTA and lo and behold smackdown starts up! My mom bought it for me and hid it in my PlayStation One of the better memories for my childhood
Nice. Cool story and definitely cool mom 😎.
I love this story! That's what I call an awesome parent. 👍
Here comes the pain was and still my favorite one
Moms rock.
That's awesome
Smackdown 2 was my obsession when it first released, spent so many hours in it. Can’t wait to see your video on it.
It was my fav too, even compared to the ones that came after
I miss the sea of camera flashes in modern wrestling. There is something about all those flashing bulbs in the audience that made moves feel more special and impactful. That is one of the things I remember most about this game!
I always wonder why you don't see people taking pictures anymore. Haven't been to a live event in well over a decade
Reminds me of Hogan vs. Rock at WM 18.
Yeah camera flashes were awesome, in any sport to be honest. When something exciting was happening, they just popped up all at the same time like fireworks. It was as if the athletes could generate them with the epic stuff they were doing, like anime characters during fights. :P
@@IlkvomitThe people who go to wrestling are smarks not mainstream
Get mainsteam back you'll see the flash
I miss it so much.
One thing I loved about Smackdown 1's season mode is that there's some super rare cutscenes that I only ever saw once despite playing many seasons with different characters.
My sister and me did a season mode with each having our own character and she was already getting things before I was. Stable confrontations, ring interferences and title shots to before I even had 1 feud.
I remember a blood bath scene that I only saw once.
@@dantalksscentsuk woww i never saw that even tough going through a long season 😭
I played the season for years and only saw the cut scene of undertaker and his symbol in the ring once .. it was amazing lol
@@dantalksscentsuk yes I remember that that was crazy!
Played the demo to absolute death. Hour upon hour. Loved this when it came out. Such a big improvement on the Acclaim games.
I vaguely remember doing the same. I got the demo on a disk from a video game magazine that came with a membership at funcoland
@@brophymusprime593 SAME!!!! 😭🤣
@@brophymusprime593 bro said funcoland !! I remember going online at the library & searching up games on their website. I wonder if they’re still around
@@MR.__G I believe gamestop nbought them
What could you do in the demo?
I remember buying this game after winning a gift voucher for a school computer competition, WWF Smackdown game was such a breath of fresh air and me and my friend (RIP) would play this every week. It was a great time to not only be a wrestling fan but a hardcore gamer as well. The THQ series is still to this day the best collection of wrestling games ever made.
Thanks for covering this and taking me on this amazing trip down memory lane.
Best wrestling game for weapons and overall randomness even if not as good as THQ games.
I bought this game with my first paycheck from working at Best Buy in high school. Got fired a month later for letting my friends use my employee discount
That and the aki series on 64
Thank you for sharing your story man! I think Smackdown 1 is pretty underrated as far as how revolutionary it was. To think it started a series that went on for *20 Years* is just mind-blowing
Ahh, the memories of this game. I played it so much, that my grandmother took it away from me for a while. And only in this game could you see something like Debra suplexing Mark Henry! LOL
She did the right thing, hopefully she took it away and replaced it with a nice book
Are you saying Debra couldn’t suplex Mark Henry in real life!! That is so sexist!! 😂😂😂😂
@@MJPamuru20 IKR.. just because she's a woman she can't suplex a 350lb gorilla.. sexism at its finest.
@@stevelowe2647what about your racism at it’s finest? “Gorilla”? C’mon bro. Smh.
This game brings back many good memories. I'd go through years on the season mode and I usually always picked Undertaker. Fun times...
One of the coolest things about the early SD games were the camera flashes going off during big moments.
This game was so huge at the time since wwf didn’t have a great game outside of WM 2000 & no mercy (Nintendo exclusive) still remember the first time playing this game & it was instantly amazing. It blew attitude & warzone out the waters
Yea man I miss those times in gaming and life lol a lot more simple
@@tavius88 I love the convenience of online gaming today, but that will never come close to actually meeting up with your friends & all being there while playing. The trash talking, the secret alliances, the mind games, the backstabs, the laughs, the arguments lol.. Glad I experienced that.
I thought Warzone had the most realistic physics but in terms of game features it was nowhere near Smackdown 2
It really did. I was so bummed I didn't have N64 for the sole purpose of WM2000. But I actually liked Smackdown for PS1 even better!
Nah I like WWF Attitude way better than this. Attitude has a way, way better create a wrestler, was much more realistic, had commentary and was just much more fun. WWF Smackdown 1 just isn't that great. The gameplay is way too fast, arcadey, no one sells anything, and the create a wrestler is downright terrible with only 4 create slots.
Still have my copy and it runs fine.
I actually liked the entrances with the tron in the background.
I thought they did a great job at copying the actual entrances
Hell yes. The way they did the entrances was perfect
Remember this game looking like GOLD in Toys R’ Us and not being able to get it
This game was revolutionary. The season mode had flaws but it was a million times better than previous games where you'd win the title and the game was over.
I'm playing Here Comes the Pain on my smartphone right now.

The WWE has had some Great Video Games over the Years and glad to see them being Covered here … 🔥
Yes! 👍🏻
WWF Smackdown! 2 has basically brought me into wrestling - I've never watched it before. Early Yuke's WWF Smackdown games were awesome, Here comes the pain was arguably the best.
No mercy and here comes the pain are the all time GOATs of wrestling games. I'm like you except WWF no mercy brought me to wrestling fan status. I always liked wrestling but I didn't really follow it until no mercy blew my 13 year old mind.
Same dude
*thq games
I loved this game, I still do, I always wished it had a bigger selection of moves to choose from
Growing up with a Playstation WWF Smackdown was the game that made me enjoy WWE games cause I hated the controls and clunkiness of the Acclaim games. The sequel SmackDown 2 is one of my favorite games ever because it expanded so much on the first. The first sparked a foundation that spawned classic sequels and made the PlayStation WWE games top tier for years to come.
I know you remember how long it took to navigate through know your role 😂😂 those loading screens were hell in that game
Don't get why people keep complaining about Attitude and Warzone. Back then, the controls weren't an issue. Only untll this era where people complain.
I recently bought a PlayStation and a copy of WWF smack down, I’m currently playing as the undertaker and I’ve gone through three seasons so far. Wild gameplay is great for the most part it’s certainly not a perfect game with nonsensical cut scenes that seem to repeat throughout each season with with the occasional cut scene being differentmaybe.
This one should be great as always. I hope we get to see an in depth look at No Mercy, I know it's been covered a lot but it's still an excellent game!

I rented this game from a local rental spot so much that they ended up just giving me the game. I cannot tell you how much i played this and the second one! Thanks for bringing those memories back!
I remember putting hours into this game when I was 17/18. Though I will say I always found the soundtrack more fitting to a survival horror game than a wrestling game, but that's just me.
Stone Cold Triple H and The Rock were always my favorite couldn't beat the game without anyone of them
Love this series and your channel! Thank you for the nostalgic trip. Can’t wait until you cover the Raw games! I remember being stoked for that seeing screenshots and then Raw 1 was rouggghh
WWF Smackdown (2000) =
,,A Breath of fresh air"
Perfect Summary for the feeling i had during playing this game back then as a young gamer, WB!
"There's a reason why the Smackdown games where King Of The Mountain"
Right.... future TNA video games retrospective coming soon lol
The DEMO blew my F***ing socks off! "The Rocks Eyebrow moves, he takes off his elbow pad" It was the best looking wrestling game by far. Something that maybe not so important now, but back then was how fast the game loaded, especially compared to attitude! No smackdown game ever came close when it came to load times.
Also I personally prefer season mode in Smackdown 1 over 2. SD2 season mode had loads more loading screens and the annoying bars that would fight each other.
This game was a huge part of my childhood gaming. It's also real coincidental you upload this because I recently purchased it and it's supposed to arrive tomorrow.
Can honestly say this game got me into the WWF - it fuelled me to want to know more and see all of these colourful characters in action. Stayed into wrestling to this day (aside from about a year and a half or so not watching around 2002-2003)
I honestly think what makes these games stand out and remembered was because they were simple, easy for people who hadn’t played a wrestling game to get into, simple controls, fast paced arcade like fun and an epic pumping soundtrack that fits in perfectly with the pace of the game. Of course other smack down games were fantastic but to me the fun will always lie in the first 2 smack down games but that’s just my opinion
This 20plus year old game had more backstage options and more match types than the newest wwe 2k game. Let that sink in..
Yeeeeah! I'm pretty sure you spend 99% of your time making these excellent videos, something tells me that in the 1% of time you have left you're not settling down to crank out some fuckin' raid shadow legends!
Smackdown 2 was my jam. I made RVD in that one and he was so close to the real guy.
Me too 👏🏻
I was a little bummed that I couldn't get wwf wrestlemania 2000 for Christmas because n64 games were a lot more expensive. I got the first smackdown instead and ended up LOVING it. It's so fun. Not as good as the n64 games imo but it does different things, giving a very arcade experience. To the point where I was hype as hell to get smackdown 2 when it came out!
I have such nostalgia for that dino head. I paired with the spacesuit look and he actually won the title. When he returned in Smackdown 2, he had a normal head and rode his own motorcycle.
You should cover a game called Wrestling Empire, it's very funny and the career mode is surprisingly good
I remember getting this game right when it came out, man was I blown away…. Went from playing WWF war zone, to Attitude, then to this game. Next to wrestlemania 2000, smackdown was definitely the best.
I see Wrestling Bios vid, I like :D
As an N64 owner, I was so blown away when I played this game at my cousins house and saw the FMV entrance videos and the high quality theme songs. Wrestlemania 2000 had better game play IMO, but this game was a much better experience overall.
You make a lot of great points! I def remember the feeling of Playstation finally getting a wrestling game that was actually great at that time! I remember seeing the Rock actually do the people's elbow in game! No mercy had it but it wasnt like in SD! All the new backstage areas were just great too! It was the 1st wrestling game that PS fans could be proud of during that time period lol! It was so far ahead of WarZone & Raw! There finally was a PS1 game that made some N64 fans really want to play it!
I adore this game. there wasn't anything like it at the time and I couldn't get enough of it.I enjoyed the create a wrestler and the entrances so much, plus the season mode was a first and exciting
Its crazy to me that the modern 2K games, including the revamped 22/23/24 titles, still uses Yukes code that began with this game.
The Smackdown game on PS1 was one of my favorite video games ever ....the Royal Rumble mode was so fun
I went to a local gaming store in my community and tried it out. After five minutes of playing it, I immediately bought Smackdown! I remember when many WWF fans thought it was a big mistake for the WWF to leave Acclaim to have THQ & Yukes develop WWF wrestling games, as the WCW games were a disaster on PS1. But Yukes was a new gaming developer. After that, Yukes had great WWF/WWE games for many years. Smackdown 1 & 2 are the best wrestling games on PS1 in my opinion.
I remember playing smack down shut your mouth before I played this classic I got it a couple days ago and man its amazing how fun it is when it comes to the controls and gameplay I’m in year 12 of season mode with ministry undertaker and I see this as the best ps1 wrestling game because of how good the season mode and 1999 wwf roster which I prefer to smackdown 2 roster and this video is what got me interested in the game and is was worth the 20 bucks I spent to get it
Seeing this game uploaded on this video reminds me why I miss playing this game. Played the demo so much and I need this game back. Always loved choosing Jeff Hardy lol
I'd love to see these games re-released. The first two Smackdown games have aged very well.
I think you're right about it being so positively compared to the previous games - I was 13 when I got this and my brother was 8. He really struggled to play Attitude whereas this was so accessible. We had a multi tap too which meant Royal Rumbles when my friends were over were a lot of fun.
First time a segway into an advert has made me laugh out loud 😂 fair play! 👏
I remember playing this with my uncle on his PS1 when I was a kid. This one was one of my favorites because the controls were so much easier for 6-7 year old me. So many hours spent beating up Vince and Shane to my delight.
I enjoy all your content, but I like these video game reviews. I hope you keep at these. We are all still waiting for Day of Reckoning 2 review. ;)
This was a fun game at the time. But I thought the create a wrestler was extremely limited. Sad that 2k20 was such a dumpster fire after Yuke's left. Now they are making the AEW game. Can't wait to see the results of that.
Those first couple of games were kinda rough but serviceable
I was more of a Wrestlemania 2000 guy
This is the only video game series that I played every edition of.....til WWE 2K20.
Another awesome upload from the greatest wrestling channel on the net.
Although I was more of an N64 wrestling game fan back in the day. I can remember my friends talking about this one back in the day. It was massive. I don’t think I ever got round to playing it. Still good to have a review of it.
The first time I did the people’s elbow and The Rock took off his elbow pad, my mind was absolutely blown.
I hated the gameplay of attitude you needed to make a combination of buttons only to make a suplex or a powerbomb and in smackdown it's more simple
I liked this game but for me, smack down 2 know your role was the best one. If it had blood it would have been perfect.
Man ppl get here quick lol been 6 minutes and I'm still like the 70th person to arrive lol wrestling bios is fn awesome bro
This was the beginning of a great gaming franchise
I remeber this was one of the first game for px1 that I bought with my money. I played this through out my birthday that summer everyday. This is a classic.
My biggest memories from this game is using the character creator to put The Rocks head on the Undertakers everything else and calling him The Overtaker.... i dont know why but i legitimately think about it too much
I bet he was a champion pro biker.
My first ever wrestling videogame, even when I watched WCW and before know the entire WWE roster. Great memories.
I remember walking past GameStation in the UK and seeing a CRT TV in the window with Smackdown playing in demo mode showing 4 wrestlers in the ring duking it out. My jaw hit the floor when I saw the way the ropes wobbled and moved and how fast paced the action was....... Then I went home and my mom called a friend at work and the next day I had a totally 100% legit copy of the game ;)
As a kid I thought this was the most "realistic looking" video game. Ohh boy
I used to love booking my own ppvs just to see how a rating I could get. I would spend hours doing it. Good times.
I still have that game!!! I remember mom renting it for me from blockbuster back in the late 90s. I got the game for weeks after that for having good grades on my report card from school.
The Slobber Knocker match was really special.
Here comes the pain was the best game. I stopped playing after that 😢
Really enjoyed this video. Hope to see more video game content in the future. Your takes on them are always entertaining.
Playing this at the time was like playing the future!!
WB is up there with the most underrated UA-cam channels, the entertainment value of this channel is off the charts
IT'S RAID AUSTIN!!! IT WAS RAID ALL ALONG!!!!!!
Smack down 2 was sooo classic. Can’t wait to see the review on it. I remember me and my friends had the multitap and we used to play the season mode crazy lol.
thq had the best wwe games i still play this game from time to time
Loved this game reminds me of happy times
Thanks for all the nostalgia man for real
The old smackdown song is fun
I put so many hours into this game when it came out.
I love the Smackdown game. It was original, had your favorite WWE wrestlers and cool matches. Were the graphics great? No but this was the beginning of a really good wrestling game in it's early years
I love the Nitro style logos on the ring mats
What made these great was the pace. It's how games should be, fast paced and OTT. Why they went more realistic as the years went by is beyond me.
Love Smackdown!!!
You nailed it. It might not be the best wrestling game of the bunch but when we were stuck extremely mediocre games like War Zone and and Attitude this was a MUCH welcome change. I played this and almost this exclusively from the release til Smackdown 2 came out. Creating your own PPV i found fascinating and would do that for hours!

They should have added Trish Stratus,Lita etc
both had 0 matches in the company at the time the game came out.
Means they weren't even in the company while they made the game.

For me it was the animations the entrances just the overall presentation of the game was super dope 👌
Still better than anything that’s came out recently
💯
I loved Smackdown 1. I was the GOAT at it. I like Smackdown 2, but I hated season mode on it. Compared to Smackdown 1.
Heres comes the pain is my favourite.
I remember I was bought this when I was 10 I believe
I remember being used to the N64 AKI series and when I finally got a PS1 I was so excited to try smackdown. I hated it by comparison. I can go back and enjoy it now for the novelty at least.
Clicked faster than Me when I was a little guy racing home to play this with friends!!! Thanks WB!!!
Best wwe game
For me, the arcadey gameplay of Smackdown was a huge disadvantage, keeping me playing Warzone, Attitude, Mayhem, and Nitro on my PlayStation, and mostly sticking to N64.
Never did care for the playstyle of ANY of the smackdown games.
No mercy is better
Raid can smd
To this day the only physical PS1 games I still own are WWF Warzone and WWF Smackdown, I should expand my collection but It would only be more wrestling games
I will be honest though, I wasn't totally sold on this game. The main reason was the Create-A-Wrestler feature was lacking. I was almost at the point of refusing to buy WWF Smackdown 2: KYR when it came out 9 months later. I'm glad I changed my mind because the character creation was miles ahead of the first one. I still wish you could book a handicapped match for a title though.
