WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role was Yukes' follow-up to the very succesful WWF Smackdown PS1 game released in 2000. Featuring an expanded roster, more match types, an updated creation suite and a brand new Season mode experience, Smackdown 2: Know Your Role was a vastly superior game when compared to it's predecessor. With a roster featuring guys like Steve Austin, The Undertaker, The Rock, Steve Austin, Kane, D-Generation X, The Brood, The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz, there were more than enough superstars for fans to choose from. Casket matches, Hell in a Cell matches and Ladder Matches also appeared in Smackdown 2, making it the most complete WWF game to get released on Sony's Playstastion console.

Still remember the day I unlocked HBK without knowing he was even in the game. So many fun memories playing this one with my cousins, dad and uncles!
Same here man! I was so pumped he was In the game. He was my favourite.
Amen to that.
С какой ты страны друг ??
Same here, I didn' t know many fans didn't know about HBK
I remember I played a royal rumble match, and he was 3rd entrant I marked out
I remember this..
The career mode was great where you unlock characters like Austin and HBK
And tag table matches
You can even unlock Gerald brisco and pat patterson, as well as Michael cole.
And the Mean Street Posse, too.
Cactus Jack and TLC match
This game is still great in 2022, epic roster, easy controls and decent graphics.
That's true. I still play it to this day.
Yes.
2k should take notes.
@@officespace7777 2K should shut their business and pass the torch to THQ

Been waiting for this for a long time. Oddly enough, my favourite parts of this game are the menu screens, and the menu music. Just filled with vibe and ambience that sticks in my mind still.
a lot of PS1 era games conveyed a cool atmosphere well despite the technical limitations. the Tony Hawk menus felt the same way
@@MPHswayze It was a good era, in many things, music too. Things were more experimental, games were no more than a decade and a half in the mainstream, lots of music was new and inventive, and now... It's like, everything's been kind of done, so instead of trying to do new things, stuff is just compartmentalized better, but lacks the flow of being truly natural and new.
I will never forget the menu sounds..
The copy going round wasn't a finished copy, I got my hands on it in October in the UK and it wasn't quite right. Story mode locked up at a certain week and someone's intro didn't work. I ended up getting a retail copy too. Some of the most fun I've ever had in a wrestling game.
Just after unlocking Shawn Michaels in the iron man match at Judgement Day.
It was the same copy in Greece. So annoying lol
I think the issue was with the Pal versión. NTSC copy was complete
Я сходил с ума, думая, что помимо Остина и Х.Б.К там ещё кто-то крутой есть, пошёл в игровой клуб со своим 2в1 smackdown и подменил незаметно на smackdown2, унёс домой и прошёл весь сезон)
Might just be nostalgia talking, but this is still one of my favorite wrestling games. Back in the day, I had no memory card, so I could never save my story mode progress, but I would always start over with a new wrestler. Had hours and hours of fun with SD 2
reminds me of having a Pizza Hut demo disc with Tekken 3 on it. I think it only had 2 playable characters on it . by the time I got the full game I was a Howang expert even though I thought he was boring lol
@@MPHswayze Hwoarang* my favourite Tekken character too lol
@@EruditeMMA on Tekken 3 my favorite characters were Gon the dinosaur and Lei Wulong (?) the cop character. Of course Eddie Gordo the master of cheese has a soft spot lol
@@bogie4226 Eddie was definitely my favourite as a kid, he was just too cool Lei was awesome too, I was sad to see he might be getting taken off the roster for Tekken 8 due to him having one of lowest pick rates online 😭
@@EruditeMMA well thats a load of bull. I've kind of fallen out of touch with the tekken games but Lei has been a staple for a long time. Even just in mentioning I'd hate to see him go
Teenage me when the Trish Stratus loading screen comes up: 🥵🔥
@@2drunktotastethischicken don’t forget the Stephanie one. 😂
Best game back in the day. Memorable music in CAW and intro. Backstage brawls and Chris Benoit
🤣🤣 Why would they bring back Benoit after he did what he did, u can also create him if u want o
i mean he was in the games up til 06, so idk what the big deal with benoit being in here is.....
Scratch that last part out. That murderer deserves no honor
Watch reliving the war, his work was legendary.

Lots of great memories playing this one with my good friend, the first Smackdown game was enjoyable but Know Your Role was much more fun and the best thing about it was, we were just getting started...
Absolutely
FACTS
Tho sym was the TRUE successor from both the smackdown games , THEN HCTP BLEW ALL 3 OF THOSE GAMES OUTTA THE PARK 🐐🔥
God. This was my childhood. I could play Smackdown 2 for hours, days, weeks on end. Because of how fun it was. From the season mode, to the pure gameplay. Just endless memories.
FUN FACT: In 2002, Smackdown: KYR was given a greatest hits release in some territories for PS1. Due to the fact the WWF had just lost their lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund, they immediately had to rebrand all new merchandise released. This affected WWF Raw (Xbox), WMX8 ( GameCube) but also led to copies of "WWE" Smackdown! KYR complete with an alternate logo shipping out nearly two years after the original release and years after Sony had already moved on to the PS2!
That must have confused some players who played the Black Label and those who never played the game who know about the WWF Wrestling brand from the past
yeah this is where the smackdown games started to get really polished for me, i played smackdown 2 non stopped when it got released, creating wrestlers, playing through the career mode with my caw self hahah, unlocking wrestlers like stone cold, cactus ect. and hidden movesets, and just playing match after matches. i play this from time to time now together with great and memorable games i like.
Not having Austin right away made me play even more.
I got this for my 14th birthday. I woke my mom up at 5am and played the game for 13 hours straight. I got a hunger headache and had to nourish myself. I used to have all of the GameShark codes from GameFAQs. I LOVE showing my age 😂😂😂
Funny story, when I was a young boy growing up in Norway. We used to get TNT on satellite. So I would watch WCW. I didn't know that WWF was a thing. Then one day on Holliday in Thailand when I was 14 or 15, I found a pirated copy of this game. I bought it and played it when I got home. And boy oh boy. This game is the reason why I like wrestling. This game is how I became a WWF fan. I remember beating season mode or something and unlocking stone cold. Who became my favorite wrestler of all time that thanks to that game. Then later when I was 16. I would get kazaa/limewire. And dowoad a bunch of Steve Austin clips and matches. And go through fuedes and stuff retroactively. So sick.
It's interesting that they basically used a Chris Benoit photo negative as the photo for created wrestlers. Anyway, this game was the absolute pinnacle of my enjoyment as an owner of an original PlayStation. Using tables and ladders, casket matches (as silly as it was to swing the casket around like it was a wiffle ball bat), re-living all the great moments of 2000...I was enamored.
I remember the season mode went on forever I’d love a deep storyline that spanned 10 years .
Mick Foley Vs. Mankind would of been a fantastic match. I don't know why they never did that storyline?
Or a tag team match against Dude Love and Cactus Jack.
Maybe because they're the same people?
@@cawcreatorcan’t be. Mick Foley was the GM in 2000, Mankind was a wrestler. Both different people! Next thing you’d be saying Cactus Jack and Dude Love are the same! 😅
This game was so ahead of its time when it came out I remember how cool it was to go backstage and toss someone thru the cage. At the time it was the craziest thing I had ever seen in a game
This brings back so many memories.. Like me and friends taking a trip to Burger King just to wrestle inside there bubble tint.. 2001 days
I remember being extremely excited when I opened up my copy I got for Christmas 2000! Spent countless hours playing over and over!
The only think I remember bothering me was that the weapons did next to no damage, so you would hit an opponnet with a chair and they would barley react. I guess they were going for an arcade feel more than a realistic one
absolutely supposed to be an arcade style game. i've been able to kick out of finishers before a one count (and vice versa.)
@@TheLarryburns84 i think thats more of a consequence of being made by japanese devs
i had this game back then, thq popped out wwe games every year since 2000
SmackDown! 2 was a brilliant game - I didn't realise they were released so close to each other but as a 13 year old, I guess time moved slower back then.
The roster was huge and made SmackDown 3 on PS2 feel disappointing.
Gotta love Mick Foley literally fighting himself there.
I played 4 years of Season Mode in SD2 about a year and a half ago now and I had an absolute blast with it again. Yeah we're spoiled by some Quality of Life stuff nowadays, but there's something about the old wrestling games that modern ones just don't have. I don't know how to describe it...it's a this synergy, this intangible thing that makes them so awesome to play...and it's that thing that kept me playing these games the entire year until the next one came out...whereas nowadays, 2K22 might be the most enjoyable game in the 2K franchise, but it still doesn't hook me in the same way the old game did because it's missing that THING the old game had. SvR 08 is when I felt that the series lost that IT factor and never got it back.
I had both this and No Mercy, and I played them both to death. It was great that Smackdown didn't try to out-Aki Aki, you could enjoy either game or both depending on your mood.
What do you think the better game was overall?
You didn’t mention my favorite mode on this game which was Hardcore Time Limit Title matches. You could play for the belt just like at Wrestlemania 2000 where the title could change hands over and over within the time limit. Last 1 with the belt wins. This was especially fun with friends.
Also the great commercial for the game with Kurt angle checking into the Smackdown hotel
SmackDown! 2 has been getting so much love on UA-cam lately and it's brilliant. This was the game that got me into wrestling before I'd even watched wrestling. So many fond memories of playing it with my cousins as an 8 year old kid. Then I got a PS2 and SYM a few years later for Christmas 2002 and it blew my childhood mind. Probably the biggest generational leap in the history of the series. Both of these games still hold up, though I do wish SD2 played a little slower.
Considering you're not primarily a gaming channel, absolutely loving these videos! You do the best retrospective wrestling game reviews on UA-cam. You should collab with DF Retro. 😂👍
I still remember getting this and No Mercy on Christmas morning. You were living high off the hog if you woke up and both games were under the tree lol
Spare a thought for me, I woke up with dog sh!t wcw thunder under my tree 😂 my dad bought me the original smack down, and I loved it being a huge wrestling fan, and I had a blast playing with and against my friends. One friend had smack down 2, and I played it for a while, and knew I wanted it asap. My parents asked what I wanted for Christmas that year, and I said I only wanted smack down 2, not a single other thing. My mum thought I was just saying nothing else because we weren’t exactly rich in the early 00s, so she got thunder instead, and some other gifts I wasn’t interested in. I put it back under the tree 😂 and can’t even remember what the other presents were, but I didn’t touch them lol. I explained to her my frustrations, but she said thunder was like quarter the price, and she would get other things to make up the difference, I explained to her why thunder was so much cheaper and the whole wcw brand was an abomination at this point, and she single handily killed Christmas and my childhood (okay I didn’t exactly say that last part lol) she redeemed herself when gta San Andreas came out, and she didn’t hesitate buying me a copy lol.
@@donkiddick966 damn, dude. I’m sorry to hear that. Lol. I understand the frustration and disappointment and would have reacted similarly. I actually remember having SOME fun with Thunder. I never owned it and only rented it from Blockbuster back when you could rent a game for like 5 nights for $5.25 or something like that. I remember at one point I got bored and added everyone to Raven’s Flock lol and it was always funny that the developers put themselves in the game as unlock-able characters 😂 those were some fun memories. Would’ve hated it if it wound up under the Christmas tree, but fun memories otherwise.
@Thefckumean looking back my attitude was probably a little sh!tty lol. I wouldn’t say I was spoiled as a kid, but I was never refused much i asked for growing up. My parents got pay tv so I could watch raw and smack down, and nitro til it went to sh!t. I just found it funny that my mums justification was money’s tight, but there was always a box of beer in the fridge like 5-6 days a week them days 😂 one thing great about thunder was if ya changed factions, the wrestlers attires changed to suit which was an awesome feature, and the rants were cool. Ironically I liked playing nitro which was extremely similar, because I use to play against my brother, but he moved out by the time smack down 2 came out, and I was over the limited style of game play those titles had, and it just wasn’t as fun playing solo like smack down games were.
Remember always going to my friends house for this game and playing it on the weekends, until I got my own copy. Fun times and memories.
This was one of my all time top FAVORITE video games of my child hood. So much nostalgia watching this video. I spent so many hours on this game just amazed and immersed in all its features. What a time to be a wrestling and gaming enthusiast. I'm still looking for a modern wrestling game with these accelerated, fast paced, casual arcade style physics and gameplay. Something about SM2's vibe is still satisfying.
I bought Smackdown 2 as a dare thinking it was going to be naff - my god I was hooked!! Couldn't stop playing it and creating characters and when unlocking Shawn Michaels was well happy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was just playing this today im on a quest to unlock all the unknowns in season mode but the skip match process is so long takes forever
This game was my childhood - allowed me to experience wrestling even whilst I could no longer watch it TV (cable company problems)
I was 22 in early 2001 and broke my ankle during my first job post university. While I was off for 4 weeks, I rinsed this game every day. Great nostalgia here (apart from the ankle pain)
This should be another top class video. The SS97 video was brilliant on Sunday, keep it up Ryan! Hopefully we can have a new Chinlock Heavyweight Champion soon enough!
looks like it plays similar to royal rumble arcade w/added features. (I've played both, the art style just reminded me of that title.)
I remember as a kid season mode killing the game for me, the gamplay itself was fantastic but the loading was killer, even back then.
I use to sneak and play this game past my bedtime until my mom caught me in the middle of the night😏
I'm picturing your mom coming in and saying "Know your role and go to bed!"
@@inter_1097 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I loved Smackdown 2. Plus it was the period I considered the best part of Wrestling. Even to this day I still watch WWF Attitude era and still think it's the best the WWE had ever been. That is why this game shall forever be in my heart.
The music to the menus were so awesome! Very memorable.
I'm replaying this right now! Playing through season mode as one of my favorites from the era; Mark Henry!
I found myself in a feud with Perry Saturn that, I think, restarted again, as it lasted four months. Things have moved on now and Shane has teamed up with Gangrel to rob Mark Henry of his European title! If you don't mind the load screens, it still holds up well enough. Especially if you're a fan of the era.
Thanks for all the great content!
Opened the video as soon as I saw it because this was my first wrestling game and the thing that started the life long obsession with weird wrestling stuff
This was easily the best wrestling game. The only thing it lacked was blood. But it had all the good wrestlers and was the most fun to play. The other one I loved was smack down vs raw with Ecw.
Career mode was amazing. My brother and I had the best careers.
Maaaan played the hell out of this back in the day! Always played my boy Test!
It’s unbelievable how good this game looks for a PS1 game. Probably the best looking PS1 game of all time in my opinion.
Recently got a copy of this myself! Was delighted to see it work on my PS3, and have been putting in quite a few hours into the season mode.
I know people moreso like No Mercy, but Smackdown 2 is my favorite retro wrestling game.
works on ps3?
@@ramzy-1096 certain models of PS3 are backwards compatible, so yeah.
I remember getting this for Christmas n my childhood friend came over n we grinded 2 player career mode like crazy n played for years haha good times
Oh, the memories. I used Steve Blackman the most but kept dealing A-Train/Tensai in 1 player mode.
Vince's finishing move name, Mac Stunner always make me laugh. 😂
I remember getting this for christmas. Me and my brothers had so much fun with this game! Great memories.
I remember when I got smackdown 2 I came home from school and seen the game sitting on top of the dining room table my dad went and got it for me while I was in school on release day I was so excited good memories man
This my favorite wwe video game…of all time!!!!!! I love when people make videos of it..thank you 🔥🔥
One of my Christmas presents from 2001. How can I forget?
I love this classic of my childhood!
As for the season mode, it's rough. But I think it's head was in the right place. Imagine if, instead of clicking through all the non-matches, there was a montage of the other matches, that would have been immersive while streamlining everything.
This was my first wrestling game I’ve played so many memories coming back man!!
This is THE GOAT wrestling game. I still play it on emulator to speed up the loaf times. The most rich and entertaining season mode and on hard difficulty the matches are thrilling unlike lumbering modern titles
funny how nostalgia works, can't even remember the loading and jankiness , great video, thanks for the memories
I still play this game from time to time. 😁
When it comes to wrestling games Smackdown 2 is the best for me. The create-a-wrestler mode is so in-depth that provides for alot of fun. The added bonus is being able to create your own entrance. My friends and I used to take people we knew and create wrestlers out of them. Did anybody else do that?
This game was bloody epic.
Ive still got this game on the PS1 😊
I played a lot of this game… never finished the season due to loading etc… it was still a ton of fun.
The never ending career mode was so cool and the cutscenes were great. The only real bummer were the loading screen times.
This was and still is my favorite wrestling game. Love the fast paced action, the roster, the music, games modes etc. the only flaw I can think of, is in the 4way elimination matches. The CPU’s will break up a pin fall even though they won’t lose the match due to that particular pin. Made those matches last forever, and have a huge advantage to submission finishers as those couldn’t be broken up.
My first wrestling game... Right in the childhood!
God that season mode. I put so much time into it and I don't regret a single second of it. To this day I wish modern wrestling games would feature a mode as good as it. Simple, week in week out stuff that goes on for as long as you're willing to go on. There's similar stuff sure but nothing quite like it. Really looking forward to your SYM review as that was my favourite as well, I went mental for not only the return of Hogan but I could play as him complete with Voodoo child. So good.
oh my god I was obsessed with this game. kept playing it. the music, the design. unlocking wrestlers, the season mode with 2000 storylines. my favorite was when i made matches that didn't happen until years later
Smackdown 2, Here Comes the Pain, & Smackdown vs Raw 2007 were my all time favorite WWF games!!
The Smackdown video game series was very important to me becoming a wrestling fan way back in the day. As I was getting into WWF as a kid, these games enhanced my enjoyment and appreciation for it and I spent many countless hours creating wrestlers, playing the various season modes and having many hilarious moments playing my friends in multiplayer. Good times I'll treasure forever.
Definitely an improvement over the first SmackDown game.
For my money, this was the game. The career mode and inserting my created wrestlers into a seamless, never ending career was the best. I loved this one a lot.
I was part of the CAW community back then, even had a website for it haha. Thanks for the video!
Anyone else remember that each month you'd get some random frankenwrestler turn up, take out your opponent and replace them for your match that show. If you beat them, you unlocked their move set, which was usually somebody not in the game like Hogan or Flair.
This game was so fun back in the day, I remember my mother getting it for me as a Christmas present back in 2000. The graphics at the time were awesome. Even better than N64 No mercy. Only problem I had with the game is you could not see someone tap out, and the Entrances were to basic, just the characters walking with their titantron in the background. Still the game was a 9/10.
The glitch you had with The Rock holding the Women's belt reminds me of a glitch I had in WWE 2K16's universe mode where Dean Ambrose was the Divas champion
That menu music oh the nostalgia, what a great game fond memories 👏 ❤
I can't imagine getting bored of hearing that Smackdown intro song!
The Best.... This game made me hunt down a multi-tap for my PS1. Also racked up over 5years in season mode.
Still got my copy and memory card 😁
Doesn't it just repeat the same season story over and over lol
@@chazgirl6186 nope. You do get repeats, but it also pulls in CAWs + unlocks. I had my BookerT CAW steal a belt from a custom CAW, who I wasn't playing as. Freaky part was this happened a few days after Booker did that TV lol
@@Methazar aw 😢, after I finished my first season the next cut scene was the same as season one's first, so I quit out of story mode 😅
@@chazgirl6186 I don't blame you. Lol I only made it that far thanks to 2 tvs and a digital hookup on the 2nd 🤣
The strategy guide for this was great too. Had stickers for your memory card haha
I still play this a lot even 20 plus years later. Modded versions and all sorts and I’m still not sick of it. It’s just over the top arcade style wrestling fun set in the attitude era with a vast roster, I’d play this over any of the 2k games any day
So many great memories with this game, from Rock Botteming your opponent through the commentary table, to doing tag team finishers (whip the opponent into your corner, I think O and tag and it'll initiate a tag finish sequence... The Dudley's do the Wazzzaaaa finish)
That remix of the smackdown theme I actually enjoy more than the original, great job!
So much nostalgia watching this video. Although, I think my disc was scratched. It's funny thinking about it now, but anytime Kane was coming to the ring, Jacqueline's video and music would start after three seconds of Kane's intro. I used to get so mad lol.
WWF Smackdown 2 Know Your Role on Sony Playstation 1 is great back in the day. I saw the WWF Smackdown 2 Know Your Role commercial with Kurt Angle in it.
This was my childhood. I played as everyone in Story mode and I loved playing this with my sis. We sometimes played this during raw and smackdown. But I did lose a few controllers to this game lol
I loved this game so much I made my own cards and storylines all using pen and paper! Times before the internet! This and the original smackdown is what made me a gamer! Smackdown 2 is in my top 5 games ever!
Glad u covered this classic i got Smackdown 2 Christmas of 2000 i had a ps1 and me my siblings and friends played the hell outta this ..was one my favorite wrestling games as a kid long with HCTP.
I still love this game. This is the best wrestling game ever to me. They changed the season mode after this game....but the season mode is what made this game so great. I still played the season after the 6th year mark and everything was unlocked.
I was absolutely addicted to this game back in the day. Me and my friend used to play it all day long. Best wrestling game ever.
8:40 looks like your wish came true with 2k24
Got this on Thanksgiving 2000 and played it all the way into 2003/2004 when this era of the wwf was outdated
The game that started it all for me. What got me to play all the classic video games and fall in love with the wwe and their stars. I credit this game for making me the wrestling fan I am today.
I had forgotten how long and frequent the loading in this game was lol... but the nostalgia of my friends and i playing this game for whole days
I (in Canada) remember season mode just continuing on forever and there were 26 unlockable move sets (Unknown A-Z). Many were for other wrestlers in other companies like WCW. One was Hulk Hogan's which let you unlock a Leg Drop finisher, another was Sting which gave you a unique reverse ddt (both moves were 5 damage). After 6 years in season mode, all 26 move sets were unlocked as a reward for making it so far. And thus, all moves were unlocked.
Still have this game. Played it a few weeks ago.
My first ever wrestling game. Man I miss my childhood
The jump in number of features, wrestlers and modes from the first to this was huge! Love it
AEW: Fight Forever needs a Season Mode like this game. Where it has an Allies/Enemies System and Multiplayer in Season Mode. Also no loading times in between everything.
I grew up in the Ruthless Aggression era but this was my very first wrestling videogame. So many memories
