Lots of great memories playing this one with my good friend, the first Smackdown game was enjoyable but Know Your Role was much more fun and the best thing about it was, we were just getting started...
FUN FACT: In 2002, Smackdown: KYR was given a greatest hits release in some territories for PS1. Due to the fact the WWF had just lost their lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund, they immediately had to rebrand all new merchandise released. This affected WWF Raw (Xbox), WMX8 ( GameCube) but also led to copies of "WWE" Smackdown! KYR complete with an alternate logo shipping out nearly two years after the original release and years after Sony had already moved on to the PS2!
That must have confused some players who played the Black Label and those who never played the game who know about the WWF Wrestling brand from the past
Might just be nostalgia talking, but this is still one of my favorite wrestling games. Back in the day, I had no memory card, so I could never save my story mode progress, but I would always start over with a new wrestler. Had hours and hours of fun with SD 2

SmackDown! 2 has been getting so much love on UA-cam lately and it's brilliant. This was the game that got me into wrestling before I'd even watched wrestling. So many fond memories of playing it with my cousins as an 8 year old kid. Then I got a PS2 and SYM a few years later for Christmas 2002 and it blew my childhood mind. Probably the biggest generational leap in the history of the series. Both of these games still hold up, though I do wish SD2 played a little slower. Considering you're not primarily a gaming channel, absolutely loving these videos! You do the best retrospective wrestling game reviews on UA-cam. You should collab with DF Retro. 😂👍
This was one of my all time top FAVORITE video games of my child hood. So much nostalgia watching this video. I spent so many hours on this game just amazed and immersed in all its features. What a time to be a wrestling and gaming enthusiast. I'm still looking for a modern wrestling game with these accelerated, fast paced, casual arcade style physics and gameplay. Something about SM2's vibe is still satisfying.
This should be another top class video. The SS97 video was brilliant on Sunday, keep it up Ryan! Hopefully we can have a new Chinlock Heavyweight Champion soon enough!

It's interesting that they basically used a Chris Benoit photo negative as the photo for created wrestlers. Anyway, this game was the absolute pinnacle of my enjoyment as an owner of an original PlayStation. SmackDown! 2 was a brilliant game - I didn't realise they were released so close to each other but as a 13 year old, I guess time moved slower back then. The roster was huge and made SmackDown 3 on PS2 feel disappointing.

I played 4 years of Season Mode in SD2 about a year and a half ago now and I had an absolute blast with it again. Yeah we're spoiled by some Quality of Life stuff nowadays, but there's something about the old wrestling games that modern ones just don't have. I don't know how to describe it...it's a this synergy, this intangible thing that makes them so awesome to play...and it's that thing that kept me playing these games the entire year until the next one came out...whereas nowadays, 2K22 might be the most enjoyable game in the 2K franchise, but it still doesn't hook me in the same way the old game did because it's missing that THING the old game had. Really looking forward to your SYM review as that was my favourite as well, I went mental for not only the return of Hogan but I could play as him complete with Voodoo child. So good.
For my money, this was the game. The career mode and inserting my created wrestlers into a seamless, never ending career was the best. I loved this one a lot.
This is THE GOAT wrestling game. I still play it on emulator to speed up the loaf times. The most rich and entertaining season mode and on hard difficulty the matches are thrilling unlike lumbering modern titles
The game that started it all for me. What got me to play all the classic video games and fall in love with the wwe and their stars. I credit this game for making me the wrestling fan I am today.
So many great memories with this game, from Rock Botteming your opponent through the commentary table, to doing tag team finishers (whip the opponent into your corner, I think O and tag and it'll initiate a tag finish sequence... The Dudley's do the Wazzzaaaa finish)
This was and still is my favorite wrestling game. Love the fast paced action, the roster, the music, games modes etc. the only flaw I can think of, is in the 4way elimination matches. The CPU’s will break up a pin fall even though they won’t lose the match due to that particular pin. Made those matches last forever, and have a huge advantage to submission finishers as those couldn’t be broken up.
I still remember getting this and No Mercy on Christmas morning. You were living high off the hog if you woke up and both games were under the tree lol
Spare a thought for me, I woke up with dog sh!t wcw thunder under my tree 😂 my dad bought me the original smack down, and I loved it being a huge wrestling fan, and I had a blast playing with and against my friends. One friend had smack down 2, and I played it for a while, and knew I wanted it asap. My parents asked what I wanted for Christmas that year, and I said I only wanted smack down 2, not a single other thing. My mum thought I was just saying nothing else because we weren’t exactly rich in the early 00s, so she got thunder instead, and some other gifts I wasn’t interested in. I put it back under the tree 😂 and can’t even remember what the other presents were, but I didn’t touch them lol. I explained to her my frustrations, but she said thunder was like quarter the price, and she would get other things to make up the difference, I explained to her why thunder was so much cheaper and the whole wcw brand was an abomination at this point, and she single handily killed Christmas and my childhood (okay I didn’t exactly say that last part lol) she redeemed herself when gta San Andreas came out, and she didn’t hesitate buying me a copy lol.
@@donkiddick966 damn, dude. I’m sorry to hear that. Lol. I understand the frustration and disappointment and would have reacted similarly. I actually remember having SOME fun with Thunder. I never owned it and only rented it from Blockbuster back when you could rent a game for like 5 nights for $5.25 or something like that. I remember at one point I got bored and added everyone to Raven’s Flock lol and it was always funny that the developers put themselves in the game as unlock-able characters 😂 those were some fun memories. Would’ve hated it if it wound up under the Christmas tree, but fun memories otherwise.
@Thefckumean looking back my attitude was probably a little sh!tty lol. I wouldn’t say I was spoiled as a kid, but I was never refused much i asked for growing up. My parents got pay tv so I could watch raw and smack down, and nitro til it went to sh!t. I just found it funny that my mums justification was money’s tight, but there was always a box of beer in the fridge like 5-6 days a week them days 😂 one thing great about thunder was if ya changed factions, the wrestlers attires changed to suit which was an awesome feature, and the rants were cool. Ironically I liked playing nitro which was extremely similar, because I use to play against my brother, but he moved out by the time smack down 2 came out, and I was over the limited style of game play those titles had, and it just wasn’t as fun playing solo like smack down games were.
The only think I remember bothering me was that the weapons did next to no damage, so you would hit an opponnet with a chair and they would barley react. I guess they were going for an arcade feel more than a realistic one
Great video! I think the table matches were a new feature for this game too, as well as the annocunce tables and ring steps being interactive for the 1st time
Oh, the memories. I used Steve Blackman the most but kept dealing A-Train/Tensai in 1 player mode. Vince's finishing move name, Mac Stunner always make me laugh. 😂
Back in the day my friends and I would challenge each other for championships with created players. It made time fly in the summer. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think I'm getting the Playstation out later and playing a few matches.
I (in Canada) remember season mode just continuing on forever and there were 26 unlockable move sets (Unknown A-Z). Many were for other wrestlers in other companies like WCW. One was Hulk Hogan's which let you unlock a Leg Drop finisher, another was Sting which gave you a unique reverse ddt (both moves were 5 damage). After 6 years in season mode, all 26 move sets were unlocked as a reward for making it so far. And thus, all moves were unlocked.
The first wrestling game I ever played even though it was 4 years old at the time. Now days that means nothing, but the jump from the PS1 era to the PS2/Xbox/GameCube era was massive and my friends playing Here Comes the Pain or SvR felt like they were 20 years in the future. That being said this game hits deep nostalgia for me and I have so many happy memories playing this game. To me this and Day of Reckoning are the greatest wrestling video games of all time
I still love this game. This is the best wrestling game ever to me. They changed the season mode after this game....but the season mode is what made this game so great. I still played the season after the 6th year mark and everything was unlocked.
Glad u covered this classic i got Smackdown 2 Christmas of 2000 i had a ps1 and me my siblings and friends played the hell outta this ..was one my favorite wrestling games as a kid long with HCTP.
So many memories of playing this game during the summer I invested Soo many hours into exhibition and career mode when my mom bought this game for me and I wasn't disappointed at all had Soo much fun with this game.
Playing this with my friends was a blast back in the day. It was always funny when we'd do a full 5 stock max finishers to begin a match and try to smash each other repeatedly. This lead to us discovering the "no sell" trick. I don't think I ever found it published (I didn't have internet at the time) but if you hit L1+L2+R1+R2 when you get hit with a finisher, you can spend a finisher stock and it will effectively do no damage. You get up immediately.
I love this classic of my childhood! As for the season mode, it's rough. But I think it's head was in the right place. Imagine if, instead of clicking through all the non-matches, there was a montage of the other matches, that would have been immersive while streamlining everything.
Man I remember playing this game so much.. As usual in Attitude Era games, I played with Kane.. I also remember playing with Big Boss Man because his Boss Man Slam was fast to the point that it was broken in matches where we started with 2-3 finishers
That "Everybody on the Ground" Smackdown theme was my favorite! Really enjoyed this game when it was release on the original PS when I was in Grade 6. Definitely an upgrade over the Attitude and War Zone games. Created several WCW wrestlers in this game.
Opened the video as soon as I saw it because this was my first wrestling game and the thing that started the life long obsession with weird wrestling stuff

Definitely an improvement over the first SmackDown game.
Hands down my favorite along with WWF No Mercy so many great memories it's hard to believe time flew by so quickly
I guess they were going for an arcade feel more than a realistic one
absolutely supposed to be an arcade style game. i've been able to kick out of finishers before a one count (and vice versa.)
@@TheLarryburns84 i think thats more of a consequence of being made by japanese devs
One word - Legend.
I was absolutely addicted to this game back in the day. Me and my friend used to play it all day long. Best wrestling game ever.
Back in the day my friends and I would challenge each other for championships with created players. It made time fly in the summer. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think I'm getting the Playstation out later and playing a few matches.
Oh the memories just warms my heart man! I miss being a kid!
Maaaan played the hell out of this back in the day! Always played my boy Test!
That menu music oh the nostalgia, what a great game fond memories 👏 ❤
I loved the energy bar simulation! This takes me back! Beautiful game.
I still play this game from time to time. 😁
My favourite wrestling game
At work right now, been waiting for this one! I know what I'm doing over a cold beer tonight
Another awesome upload from the greatest wrestling channel on the planet!
To me this and Day of Reckoning are the greatest wrestling video games of all time
I love this game! I re-purchased it a few years ago and still enjoy turning it on. The roster is so good!
Spent so many hours playing this classic game. Even loved the main menu music
So many memories of playing this game during the summer I invested Soo many hours into exhibition and career mode when my mom bought this game for me and I wasn't disappointed at all had Soo much fun with this game.
this is and forever will be my favorite
I remember getting this for Christmas n my childhood friend came over n we grinded 2 player career mode like crazy n played for years haha good times
One of the greatest wrestling video games of all time!!!
Going back and forth between this and No Mercy are the best video game memories of my life.
It’s unbelievable how good this game looks for a PS1 game. Probably the best looking PS1 game of all time in my opinion.
Ps2 game
@@DanzigDevilockno its ps1
Really been enjoying the classic game reviews
I don’t know how many hours I’ve put into this game when I was in school but I have so many good memories of this game.
Great memories with this game. I still play it from time to time, the load times reeeally don't age well but its still fun
Opened the video as soon as I saw it because this was my first wrestling game and the thing that started the life long obsession with weird wrestling stuff
One new year's day a friend and I played this game for the whole day. We must have been on it for about 13-14 hours. That multiplayer season mode was brilliant. SVR2006 is probably my favourite and the one I sank the most time into.
Me and my buddies would play create a ppv mode for hours, absolutely loved that mode!
Smackdown 2, Here Comes the Pain, & Smackdown vs Raw 2007 were my all time favorite WWF games!!
Loved this game!!!
The ps1 was awesome!!
I remember seeing this game for the first at a friend's house. I had just discovered wrestling and couldn't believe there was an ACTUAL GAME for it. I remember being blown away 🤯
I grew up in the Ruthless Aggression era but this was my very first wrestling videogame. So many memories
the best of SD!2 was that you can play season mode with your friends!
i think you can enter up to 4 players if you had a multitap ❤ getting booked together on the show was one of the best feelings back in the days
This was easily the best wrestling game. The only thing it lacked was blood. But it had all the good wrestlers and was the most fun to play. The other one I loved was smack down vs raw with Ecw.
Career mode was amazing. My brother and I had the best careers.
Know your role was such a great game, played the hell out of this game
Love it! Great video
