WWF War Zone was released in 1998 for Playstation, N64 and Gameboy. With a roster including superstars such as Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Mankind and Kane; War Zone brought the WWF up to date with a full 3D wrestling game, the first in WWF video game history.
War Zone was developed during the dawn of the Attitude Era in 1997 but it was released when the Attitude Era was in full swing. Players could take on the challenge mode to try and become WWF champion, they could set up cage matches and hardcore matches, and for the first time ever fans could create a wrestler and play matches as their creation. Thanks to the data storage capabilities of compact disc, the PS1 version of War Zone featured superstars cutting promos during the challenge mode. Nintendo 64 players got a few bonuses of their own however, an exclusive Royal Rumble mode along with Gauntlet matches.

It’s crazy no wrestling game has ever recorded in-game grunts and voices from the actual wrestlers themselves which made this game special. Idk why but that detail is still mind blowing to me

I remember when I first bought this game, I was EXTREMLY surprised to hear character audio like that. The only other game I owned at the time where characters "had voices" was Star Fox, and that barely counts, and Donkey Kong Country 2, where everyone is a crocodile.
I did Steve Austin's Lou Thez Press so many times I have the line "Don't take this ass whoopin personally son" still stuck in my head.

My favorite bit was using a create a wrestler - when you got momentum, the crowd would chant “Play-Er One Play-Er One”.
It’s stuck in my head to this day.
The no selling of moves was annoying you could hit a piledriver and the opponent would pop straight back to their feet like nothing happened

Ahmed Johnson’s misheard cutscenes in War Zone are what I remember. “There ain’t nothing between us but air and a toothy boy!”
I still remember Toys R Us calling and telling me they had my pre order ready. So my grandfather drove me to pick it up and he pulled over speeding along the way and I kept telling the officer we had to get the WWF game before they closed. Ah, nostalgia.

I wish I had such fond memories - I remember playing this game on my PS1 after my parents had gotten back together following a nasty separation. But at the age of 15, in 1998, I'd found a new fascination: pro wrestling. And this game was the combination of my two new greatest pastimes into one: a Playstation WWF game. I think I must have wasted at least 4 months of my life plaything that Goddamn game.

This game may have aged badly, but I still absolutely love it. It still has better commentary than most of the modern wrestling games. Countless hours spent on this one.

Glad Acclaim dropped the button bashing grapples from the previous gen WWF games, but changing it to Mortal Kombat type moves was a pain in the arse, having to constantly pause the game to recall how to do even the most basic of stuff.
Also, if you hack into the game, you can play as Turok Dinosaur Hunter (though he's really just a reskin of The Rock). he was originally meant to be a unlockable character, but the WWF rejected him. Can't have someone that battles dinosaurs in a wrestling game, that would be far too silly with this roster :D
The motion capture always felt like the wrestlers had no weight to them either, like they were just balloon versions of them, you can't un-notice it now >:D

As always, you have a way with words on my indifference with these Acclaim WWF games. (And War Zone would be the first video game I bought with my first job!) I had my blush with Mortal Kombat, but once I played the hell out of part 2, the constant memorization of EVERYBODY'S different movesets grew old. Actually, that's not changed in all these years!

This was the first wrestling game I played as a kid back in the late 90s. Despite it not being a masterpiece, I have very fond memories of playing War Zone.
So many hours poured into this game as a kid.

Did your game used to glitch during tornado tag matches? My nephew would always get stuck in the ropes and it turned into a handicapped match for a long time, every damn time.

I remember I had this on the n64 and I thought it was so rad having their intro themes to listen to. I'd just sit and listen to them nonstop and I thought the quality was amazing haha

I still got the strategy guide for WarZone. It has a brief sentence in the back saying "We fought hard to keep Bret Hart, British Bulldog, and Ahmed Johnson in this game." I remember it kept getting delayed on release too.
Wow that's pretty cool, I never knew about that. The game is basically a representation of the WWF in 1997 though so it would have been strange to not have them in it. They were lucky to still be included since Wrestlemania the Arcade Game excluded Diesel and Adam Bomb, and In Your House left out Mankind, Sunny and Jeff Jarrett.

Literally had no idea about half the stuff you mentioned about the HUD, such as momentum. I just pressed different combos and prayed for the best.
I hadn’t watched wwf for over 4 years, Warzone was what got me back into the product and made me aware of Stone Cold.
I remember seeing the commercial and begging my parents for this game. The concept of creating your own wrestler was the huge selling point for me and I put sooooooo many hours into this game. Great video, bro!

The game that got me into wrestling. To this day I can play it on emulator. Such a great game with unique controls and fun difficulty in just controlling. Attitude was the go to for sure but War Zone is the reason I'm a 22 year long wrestling fan

I actually owned this game on PS1 and even though it wasn't perfect, I remember having lots of fun playing it every night with my good friend (RIP) I have lots of great memories seeing these clips from my childhood and it was a very special time in my life. Thank you so much for this great trip down memory lane

@@thekosmokramer Graphics were great for the time, and l thought the gameplay was too....until l played wcw Revenge and it was game over. Revenge was now the game l pulled out when friends came over, not Warzone. I still played it occasionally, but once Wrestlemania 2000 came out, even that stopped.

I remember how excited my older brother was when he rented this game and brought it home to play. I couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous the wrestlers looked. And how my brother struggled with the nuclear launch codes to pull off a move or finisher.
Undertaker Was The Only Wrestler That Looked Remotely Accurate
I remember my cousin Gabriel let me play this. I was madly obsessed with Kane and Undertaker. Smackdown 2 was my favorite ps1 wrestling game. Used to play that all day. I got a wrestling game from grandma and grandpa every year until svr 2006.
I loved this game, it taught me how quickly storylines and a wrestlers persona can change 😂

@Bryan Mack Plus Bret "The Hitman" Hart,British Bulldog,and Ahmed Johnson were already gone from the WWF (now WWE).
I remember in my teens me and a group of friends would spend hours messing around with the create a wrestler feature in both this game and WWF Attitude. We made our own wrestlers and our own wrestling leagues, we even kept note of who was the champion in each league we made up. We put hours into both games just making up wrestlers and leagues, I could probably count on one hand the number of times we played as the actual wrestlers in the game.
I made my own wrestling organisation too back in the day. Which started on Royal Rumble for the SNES. Before progressing too WCW VS NWO World Tour and then WWF Wrestlemania. I called it EWF, European Wrestling Federation.
That's awesome. I use to play it alot my friend use to let me borrow it's a great game ever greater memories.

This game sparked my love for Kane. I wasn’t big on rasslin before my cousin got this…still took a couple years before I started watching SmackDown weekly, Kane being my favorite, but The Rock being the reason I kept watching

I got this game for Christmas in 1998. I played the hell out of it. Going back to it now it's very clunky and slow, but I was a beast with my created wrestler. WWF Attitude was leagues better especially the entrances.
Attitude was literally copy and paste game with updated rosters how was it better ? They both sucked I hated these games as a kid
@@litodat233 Attitude streamlined things a bit compared to Warzone. At least to me Attitude didn’t feel quite a clunky as the original while also expanding upon CAC, especially the move list if I remember right. The roster was increased by a lot going from Warzone to Attitude and the season mode personally was done quite a bit better than what was in Warzone. Also had some unlockable characters, which is something.
I do not remember, but I think this might be from the ECW reskin of Attitude, but custom arenas was pretty fun for what is was and the somewhat improvement to the settings.
Obviously though if you didn’t like Warzone, you wouldn’t like Attitude, which fair enough.

War Zone got me into wrestling and Attitude was so much better. I didn't like Smackdown because of the lame entrances and season mode was basic as hell. And controls were simple and boring. Way too easy. WrestleMania and the WCW games were arcadey and looked fake to me. I didn't like anything better till Smackdown 2 which was the best season mode. And match selection was insane. The create a wrestler was better than ever. Just had to deal with the entrances. Just Bring it was basic again and Shut your mouth is my favorite wrestling game of all time

I saved and saved, mowed lawns all summer to get this on my.ps1 when it came out..I had a magazine article, I read OVER ANS OVER. Might not be n64 quality, but I still LOVED IT

This brings nostalgia flowing through my veins I remember vividly how much I loved this as a kid! Unfortunately though it's dog do do gameplay wise and totally unenjoyable if you was to have a match on the game today. It's not like any of the ps2 smsckdown where anyone one of them you can pick up and play even after years away. This just leaves you frustrated and and fed up. I will NEVER get tired of seeing it though and that's why I'm happy to be watching through your experience. It's all I need :) wwf attitude was just as frustrating to play tbh just as amazing nostalgically

I made my friend in the create a wrestler mode. He was 400 lbs, and had the DX mannerisms. When he did the crotch chop, his arms vanished into his enormous belly.
When my friend came over the next day and saw it, he was not nearly as amused as I was.
Another interesting thing about the combat system is damage depends on the time limit. Set a match to 30 minutes, and the match can easily push the 10 minute mark before the opponent goes red.
In 5 minute matches, the match is over in 3 minutes or less before the opponent is red.
Interesting. Would have been nice if there were more things to do in the game like game modes or backstage area fighting.
my first wrestling game was Smackdown: Know your role 2. Man I played it to shreds with my brother. You could play season mode with multiple superstars and controllers. I picked the Undertaker and my younger brother picked Kane. We won all titles together as the Brothers of Destruction.
Smackdown 2 had the best season mode for years. I made all my caw I created and friends created, friends in storyline. A feature that's missing to this day!!!
i spent wayyy too much time on the first two smackdown games. The season in 2 was the best organized out of any of those games but loading screen hell and you had to watch all the life meters fight each other but i still poured hours and hours into it
Speaking as someone who was born far after the Nintendo 64 era and who's 1st wwe game was WWE 13. I've always liked these retrospectives of games which I've never played.

I love this game! One of my childhood favorites! I remember versing a friend + my older brother in a triple threat match and it was literally the most intense thing, ever! They both know how to play and especially how the mechanics are, it made the match awe inspiring.

The way you remixed the song in the beginning was so sick! Warzone was my childhood but once WcW Revenge and Wrestlemania 2000 came out, I barely played Warzone again.
Hell once WWF Attitude came out I stopped playing 99 was a good year for wrestling games we got Attitude WM2000 Smackdown WCW Mayhem man we were spoiled back then..

Calling my friend for the finishing moves is the first thing I remember when I see this game because they didn't include them in the move list until the next game. Trying to translate the n64 button layouts for the ps1 layouts was pain at first but got a hang of it because he had the n64 strategy guide.
They actually did include the finishers in the PS1 version. They just didn't show up until the opponent was at red health
@@Giantsfanlewis They didn't show up in the move list though. I played the demo where I was Stone Cold facing Shawn Michaels, and I could never figure out how to do the Stunner. Thankfully, I went to Kmart one day and they had the demo playing with the strategy guide right there near it. I remember the joy I felt when I was finally able to do the Stunner! 😁

Warzone was groundbreaking from other past games. The roster could have been bigger like attitude did, I kinda wish it was harder to beat the game though.
Considering that it was the first non 16 bit wrestling game. It was groundbreaking for the time.

@Thanos Streams in regards to what had came before. Such as Raw and Royal Rumble for the 16 bit consoles. It was leaps and bounds ahead. However didn’t hold up for long.

WWF wants new guys to the roster yet the developers fought to keep guys like Bret Hart, British Bulldog and Ahmed Johnson.
My dad bought this when it was released at Christmas on PS1 it was great, I still couldn't understand Ahmed Johnson during his promos even in this game. I used to make a custom character and I used A.J finisher the pearl river plunge I loved that move, loved going up the TV tower and watching the video promos of Owen Hart and HBK etc

I have extremely fond memories of War Zone on the N64 and it was amazing to have my stepdad create a character and join in made it special. It certainly does not have replay value now-a-days and now that I have an N64 again, I'm introducing my young son to WWF No Mercy and WCW Revenge as it was more or less pick up and play. Wrestling Bios, how did you not show the Ahmed Johnson video? It's unreal!

I remember first seeing this in Xtravision years ago and rented it immediately. It was great, but World Tour and Revenge were much more fun wrestling games and after you played them it was harder to enjoy Warzone.
I remember begging for weeks to get WWF warzone on release day. For it’s time it was amazing and the best wrestling I had played at the time. A lot of great memories as a 11 year old kid
I had the N64 version and the thing I hated most about this version was that it didn't let you select your opponents. Your opponents were chosen for you. That would have made a huge difference as far as long term play value went. I had dreams about matching my creations with each other but thankfully this was possible with Attitude since it let you select your opponents.
I feel like 40% of the time the game would match you up against yourself. It was obnoxious. 🤣
I had this game on PlayStation and LOVED it. I remember it being SO hard, but luckily, playing Mortal Kombat previously prepared me for the button combos. When I played it on N64, I remember being confused by the music being "worse" and how it had the Rumble mode.
This was one of the first games I ever remember playing. In fact I still have it! This video has made me want to dig it out but I’m worried I’ll just disappoint myself

I had the N64 version as a kid, and for some reason I really liked the MIDI rendition of Stone Cold's theme. Listening to it now, it sounds like country music, of all things. lol
That's because in real life Kane was only 6'9. War Zone was the only wrestling game that got his correct height.

I was never a huge fan of actually playing War Zone, but it gets full credit for making me fall in love with create-a-wrestler modes. I had never experienced anything like it before and it's been the main draw for me in wrestling games ever since.
Mane I absolute love this game ... These were the real wrestling games ... Nowadays it's just all about graphics ... As a kid, these classic games were everything

The first thing we did back then was building Vader in the creator. "We all did back in '98" pretty much sums it up. I still get ptsd when I think back on the controls of Warzone and Attitude. I played only the N64 versions
I was in Kindergarten in 97. My dad bought a ps1 and our first game was Crash Bandicoot. I got bored and played the demo disc that came with our playstation and warzone was one of the demo games. You got to be Stone Cold or Shawn Michaels. I loved Stone Cold’s audio while playing and we started watching wrestling. I just found my copy of this a couple of weeks ago, and it was in perfect condition. Figured I might price check it on ebay to see what it's going for before I start planning my retirement. Back into the drawer it went, and back into work I went. Being able to listen to the entrance music in the character creator was the greatest thing, though!
