Welcome back to Plant Fanatics, where green thumbs thrive and your garden comes to life! Dive into today's episode as we master the art of peach pruning. Stick with us to unlock the secrets of snipping success!
Before we unleash the shears, let's gear up with the essentials. On my belt, there's the trusty hand pruner-simple, yet crucial. You'll find links to every item, including these, in our Amazon storefront below. Sure, it's a bit geeky to have a holster for pruners, but hey, it's practical chic in the world of horticulture, and it keeps your hands free.
Upgrading our game, we've harnessed the power of electric pruners. Perfect for those stubborn branches that regular pruners can't handle, these gizmos have revolutionized our pruning this season. And for the big leagues, nothing beats the classic loppers-just ensure they're razor-sharp for clean cuts, and don't forget to sanitize with a simple wipe to halt any spread of disease.
Before you go pruning-crazy on your peach trees, let’s talk growth. Understanding that peaches blossom on last season’s wood is key to a fruitful yield. If you're puzzled by a lack of flowers and fruits, chances are, the vital wood has been mistakenly pruned away. Observe this branch: the dark wood bore last year's harvest, but it’s the fresh, reddish shoots where the magic will happen next season. We'll sidestep any wood that's in the way, diseased, or trying to annex your home!
Take this rogue branch invading my gutter space-do I remove it entirely or just trim it to preserve the fruit-bearing shoots? Decision made, I opt for a strategic cut. Remember, angle your cuts for rain runoff; waterlogged wounds could spell doom for your beloved trees.
Watch closely as I demonstrate the perfect prune, ensuring our peachy friend not only survives but thrives with bountiful blossoms. And keep an eye out for deadwood-like old news, it's not contributing to your garden's story anymore.
Join me, and together, let's keep those peach trees healthy, happy, and heavy with fruit!

When to prune? Zone 6? From November to February?

In zone 6, you can prune your peach trees at any time during their dormant season, which typically spans from late fall to early spring. This period could be from around November to early April, depending on your specific local climate. Pruning during dormancy helps to avoid disease and allows the tree to focus its energy on healing and new growth in the spring. Just be mindful of extremely cold spells, as pruning right before them can make the tree more vulnerable to cold injury.

I just bought my Peachtree in the summer of 2023. When do I start to prune it? Do peaches like to have mulch at their base? How often do I fertilize and what do you use?

Prune late winter only for proper form. Remove as little as possible the first couple seasons. Peaches thrive with 2-4 inches of mulch pulled away from the trunk by one hand width. With an in-ground tree I would only fertilize once or twice a season with a really nice compost.
