I could not walk for a couple months. Was told to get knee replacement. I found you on line, started exercising, and found a good PT that thinks outside the box that helped me. I was walking without walker within a couple weeks. I found water exercising helped me focus on my glute muscles, and walking backwards in the water. You gave me hope and understanding of my problems. I am still slow, but I’m 70 years old, I can be slow. I don’t have to run marathons. I don’t want to risk knee surgery. I am happy with my progress, without surgery. God bless you!
@RuthRomer-xk9rn A comrade! The backwards walking in the water has helped me so much, too. I tried it on land but couldn’t even feel which muscles were and weren’t working. Yikes! Now I can do about 20 steps backwards, on the beach, but it sure fatigues me quickly! So the pool is my primary medium. Like you, I’m in my 70’s, so I don’t worry about speed. Just safety, endurance, and eventually easier stair mobility. Best wishes and success to you in your health quest!
@@tessajetta8146concentrate on using your glute muscles, think about them moving slowly at first, do exercises till they burn. Back leg kicks, side leg kicks, /and use pool noodle behind your knee,bending your knee, raising your knee and push down slowly, using those glutes!, also use it under your foot bend knee and push down, using glutes. You need to use the muscles on the side of your butt too, swing your leg to the side with noodle under your foot, cross it over the other leg, using those muscles. I found I can feel them working better in the water. Slow at first, concentrating on which muscles are working. It takes a few days or more to feel the muscles working. Exercising is not a quick fix, but really works over time with commitment.

Absolutely right! When I went to my new doctor with the MRI she said We can do cortisone every 3 months and then you'll need a near knee replacement. I went to 4 months of PT and I am doing fantastic!!! The butt muscles are the key! We worked our way to the glute exercises. That's where I Gain the most improvement. I have A complex torn meniscus and arthritis. No surgery. Don't plan on it
Dr. David is 💯 correct. movement…activate and strengthen glutes…and not with quad help..fix muscle imbalances….being consistent…age has nothing to do with it…I’m still hiking with ddd and hip arthritis….( hiking poles and daughter in tow lol) no surgeries for me at 87 ! I wish everyone well! 💕

My dad has had a bad knee since his early 30s. At age 88, he had a knee replacement, and the result has been fantastic. Hes finally walking freely with no pain. Wish he did this decades ago, but glad hes improved mobility for his remaining years.
I had a both knees replacement five weeks apart several years ago and I’m here to tell you it was the best thing I ever did for myself day one when they got you up to walk there was no pain I have titanium and I am thrilled with them

@ that is true. But I did want to put it out there that sometimes the surgery can work for some people and I was one of the very blessed of those people.
I had knee replacement almost 15 years ago. I am still not walking and my legs still hurt. They have since change the way they do surgery now. I became severely anemic, I got pneumonia, and MRSA! I went home 2 1/2 months after surgery, with more problems than I had before surgery!
This is my fear. I understand some ppl feel surgery helped them...and others it did not...made it worse. It's too finite of an "option" at this stage personally. You cant go back once you do it...right?! We owe it to ourselves to try what we can to change lifestyles. I suppose also it depends on each person's situation, when it's their last resort-nothing else worked, pain was too high...

It’s been a year since I watched your video to strengthen my gluts. It is a game changer. I’m able to tackle my stairs without pain. 71 here. The contrast was before following your instructions, I was in severe pain. My mother had knee replacements in both legs and suffered from the second one. Thank you. I forgot to mention I spent $600 on injections before I found this channel and the shots not only did nothing, but I wasn’t informed I would have to pay $600 out of pocket.
I was told 14.5yrs ago I need a dbl knee replacement[I'm in Canada], 6 orthopedic surgeons ALL said they'd replace my knees when I'm 65[only 2 knee replacements per life time in Canada], every person I know thats had a knee replaced said they were in more pain AFTER the replacement than before & all advized me to avoid the surgery. I've taken martial arts since 5yrs old, the info on butt exercises was very informative & I can easily do what you said as well as upper body exercises[I sit and lift weights when watching tv] I use a knee offloader brace when lifting anything heavy[feels like a mid evil torture device! [getting a new one asap] I've really noticed a difference having very good shoes with good arch support, much less pain. great info! I'll be checking out you're other videos!!! thx
For me you are amazing. Many years ago I had reconstruction surg on my L knee and was told I had to have really strong legs to hold it it place. Over 20 yrs I have had so much pain, swelling in now both knees. I believe it was from over compensation for not being able to bend my L knee. Over 6 months ago I found you and I am so grateful. I have been following up on your teaching. And I am amazed at the change in my knees and my hips also. When I get off track, I feel it. Thank you so much. My only wish is I would have found you sooner, but grateful I did. I have finally stopped falling and getting hurt, due to the wrong teaching on my knee. Thank you!!!

The surgeon planning for my double knee replacement, sent my CT scans to a company in Switzerland to make a 3D model of my knee . And because it is custom made for my knee, apparently recovery is easier. I live in Australia and under our healthcare system the operation and recovery process in respite care, are all free. Only 2 surgeons in my area are trained in this method.
My knee arthritis has gotten better since I found you in January. Thank you for doing the UA-cam videos. My doctor asked if I was seeing a specialist. Nope! Maybe I should’ve dropped your name.

Not many doctors tell their clients that muscle strength is important. But You do, You know 🏆 I have a fairly healthy body. 65 years old. But I have knees that snap and crackle when bending. No pain, but discomfort. I take care of my body, Sensing Yoga (Human Garage) and Postural Yoga (Optimum method) And I walk a lot, and bicycles. I had a total knee replacement just 12months ago in Brisbane. I am so happy with the result of my surgery. I'm 72yrs of age. I didn't want surgery. I've been a Reg nurse for 45+ years. I tried every alternative. I was doing pilates , swimming and physio exercises to try and "fix" my knee. I followed all the Utube physio sites and still do. This one is great. I got fit but no progress with my knee! I did my research. I got a a great surgeon. I did all the pre surgery and post surgery physio. You are part of a working team. My new knee is fantastic. I often forget i've had the OP.
😂Ive had 2 knee replacements , as well as 2 hips...was in agonizing pain before, and am so very grateful that I was lucky enough to have had these surgeries. I'm 82yrs. 😊
Sometimes surgery is the right and only answer and it can be such a game changer. I'm talking about hip surgery . Knee no problem, and the surgery is more complicated.

I have knee arthritis and have had meniscus tear surgery on both. Unsuccessful and probably caused more arthritis. I stopped eating bad carbs to cut down inflammation and I lost 60 lbs in past year. The knees were feeling so much better. Recently I started walking and to my surprise was able to walk for an hour with hardly no pain. Then I started walking our bridge which is quite steep. After about a week my knees have need extremely painful. Watching this video I think am probably using my quad muscles walking at an incline so what you are saying makes total sense. Thank you.
Dr David all I can add is this...your advice on the importance of strengthening glute muscles for the relieve of my sciatica and knee pain is stellar..and that it is a procedure and not a quick fixer is so very important!! Patience is the name of the game ..and never give up ..keep doing the appropriate exercises.. Try taking Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfate combo supplement to help rejuvenate the fluid sacs in the joints, combined with the videos exercises... They've worked great for me and my husband! A study was done comparing surgery to exercise by doing only an incision but not actual surgery on the other group. By doing the rehab exercises, they both had a good result. Castor oil helps my mild right knee pain and walking . I cut a small piece of old cotton shirt into about 6 square inch all four sides. I poured about two tbsps. of castor oil on the cloth and laid it on my knee bone and after laying it on my knee, I wear a dollar knee stretchable support .
@@francescag6889 I wear just a regular sneakers. I have a Nike walking shoes. I will tell you also something from Japanese Scientists findings about walking. When you, for example, go for a walk, make sure you walk 15 minutes speed walking and 15 minutes slow walking and then alternate for at least one hour. When you do this kind of walking, make sure you land your heel first and then toe. Heel, toe, heel, toe. Then try to send and feel those vibrations and send it towards your legs and to your pelvic bones to prevent pelvic and hips problems in the future. The bones need vibrations and waking up those nerves. Minimize walking uphill. It’s not good for knee pain, walking up hill. You don’t want your quads grow more muscles , you need to grow more muscles on the butt areas. Just walk on flat ground . The dollar stretchable will do. Just put the castor oil on a piece of cloth like what said before and wrap it with your stretchable. Tap your knee mildly for at least one minute everyday. It needs to wake up/stimulate the nerves. I learned it when I went to Japan. Keep up your waking. I was referred to an Orthopaedic Surgeon by my family doctor before she retired seven years ago for my right shoulder problems. I said “NOOOOOOO!” WhenI went to Japan five years ago, I met someone and thought me what I’m telling you now. I walk everyday now. My knee pain is 98 percent gone and my shoulder pain is…what pain?! Keep up your walking. It needs to be at least more than half an hour . Otherwise, you’re just wasting time.❤️❤️❤️ P.S. put gelatine In your drinks. 1/4 tsp. Or 1/2 tsp. Try it for two weeks.

I had knee replacement in my worst knee and do not regret it because I can sleep at night(after six months after surgery)..but will not be getting the other knee done...
Some time before COVID I was getting problems with sciatica, but the wait to see a doctor on the NHS was about 6 weeks! I made an appointment with the doctor but decided that in the meantime I'd try alternate therapy. I was seen by an Acupuncture specialist. The idea that this could work seemed really unlikely, but he explained that sciatica isn't normally nerves trapped in the back, but muscles that put excessive pressure on the nerves coming out from the spine. After the first session I wasn't cured, but somehow I felt less problem. After another two such sessions my sciatica had gone. Something similar happened when I got osteoarthritis, except that I went first to the acupuncture guy, and got that fixed too. Possibly the most amazing improvement happened to my partner. Her knee more or less locked up - she needed a stick even in the house. She could only think of knee replacement, but I persuaded her to try acupuncture with the same guy and after a few sessions she suddenly said her pain had gone. We have both done numerous bike rides (no batteries involved!) since then! The treatment this guy is describing is easy to obtain outside conventional health systems.
Very good information here. I have bone on bone in right knee and osteoarthriti but I still can walk, no chronic pain. Doctor already telling me I'm a candidate for TKR. All of what you said in what doctors will say is true, just offering the surgery or injections. No talk of muscle imbalance. You provide alot of good information. Wish I could see you for an appointment but for now, watching your videos does help. I want to improve my knees to do better and avoid surgery. Thank you.

Looking forward to the video. My left knee is bone on bone and has arthritis. I have had the injections in my knee recently and it has helped. five months ago I fell and broke my hip. It has healed well however, my knee is very angry because I could not use it for eight weeks With all the muscle loss I’m trying to build it back up and hopefully strengthen the knee like it was before I broke my hip. I really appreciate all the knowledge that you give us.

78yrs - I totally agree! All that was told to me!! After 15 months tkr, I am in big pain. Had second opinion and showed him also the two very sensitive areas. He said I have nerve damage. I totally wished I had never had the surgery 😔!!!!

I was told my two doctors that I needed a complet knee replacement. Then I noticed, I slept fine at night...knee didn't bother me. Not a lot of pain. I did get hydrolonic injections...help some. Knee is bone on bone. Then I tore my peroneal longus tendon in my foot and docs said I needed surgery. I'm old 70, have arthritis in my foot and bursitis in my hip as well as problems with a spinal fusion. I'm done with surgery...and do you know what, I'm managing, not taking pain meds except for a little Tylenol....and managing. I can't run a marathon and never have but also don't have to go through surgery!!!! Thank you for this channel. I have been helped by your videos!
Excellent thank you. Ive got more help from your videos than all the doctors Ive seen who treated me with almost robotic responses wear and tear your age your weight your knees are very big!!!! I had mild problems pre covid but did 3 dance classes and walked and gardened and managed fine. Then came 3 years constantly going up and down stairs maybe 30 times a day nursing aging very ill family at home and not getting to do my regular routine. Coupled with huge stress and two bereavements I ended up in constant pain. Doctors just threw pain meds at me that didnt help I got physio and got referred to a surgeon. He was horrifying. Told me that was it my knees were big I was too fat and come back in two years. I asked about exercise, and he didn't give me any help. My physio guided me to the pool, which has helped so much. I exercise in the water and move different ways for lengths. I keep active at home and still dance not every week but keep it up. Again its trial and error and its adapting activity to suit how the knees are. I lostv3 stones and have kept it off for over a year. Your videos have helped more than 3 doctors. And this one has reminded me of the important things. Im much better a lot stronger but again I have to accept what I have and not let it defeat me. Im hoping and confident well fairly that I wont go for surgery. Bone on bone is the other phrase thrown around too and again all presented as if youre finished I aint!!!! I have a cane but only use it when needed. Thank you for all the videos. CC
I can relate to this. Stress wrecked my health too. I had those issues from a few months before the vax. Several doctors told me it could be long Covid (probably had it before it became a pandemic). I believe the symptoms of stress (cortisol) and long Covid and/or vax are similar. Therefore : do vagus nerve yoga, every day. Calm down your system. Suppress the inflammation. Lose weight (keto + fasting 3 days a week). I’ve also been exercising various muscles (including quads) and things got better but still having significant knee issues. Some exercises indeed make it worse (leg curls without a pillow under pelvis). Then I had months without the pool but With a gym + a pro vibration plate, followed by back to pool HIIT and home vibration plate. Conclusion is that gym + professional vibration plate+ PT exercises and pool HIIT exercises for an hour+ PT exercises both lead to a significant improvement. For the vibration, it’s important to not lock knees. Use it for massage as well (seated & lying down). I hope this will help you to get better. It Is possible ! Don’t give up and be consistent.

Keep spreading your great information!! I mistakenly got a total knee replacement and I have regretted it every since. It took me a full year of my life to recover, and the results are not nearly as good as I had expected. Do everything you possibly can to avoid it.
I agree 💯. I was going through a popular online OA exercise program for nearly 2 years. I thought I was getting stronger and doing better, but little by little, I was actually worsening my muscle imbalances. I landed in the PT clinic with acute PF pain. Working through the very challenging glute exercises for 3 months, I'm shocked at how much better I feel. My both sides are more equalized than ever, and the pain is diminishing more and more. Now my challenge is trying to find a better exercise program that won't set me up for more injury.
I had my right knee replaced about 7 years ago my left has been bothering me about 2 years. My PT send me to a knee doctor. He xrayed left knee and right hip that bothers mr. He said I do not need a replacement with either. I have scoliosis and that pulls my right hip. I have had several shots in knee for pain. And I wear a knee pull on when I go for a walk. I now have a brace that i put on over the other and it stays in place. I have a trainer at the gym twice a week for 30 minutes. She is teaching about butt and a lot of things you talked about. Great! Can I see any if your programs to do here at home. I will be 77 in a month and I want to get stronger and straighter. Thanks Carolyn
I believe that retraining the body's natural and functional movement patterns plays a big role in reducing knee arthritis and helps prevent knee replacement. The natural movements do not overuse the quads. One of the reasons why the quads are overused is because when people hurt their backs they were instructed to use their knees and keep their backs straight to lift things. Climbing stairs or doing single-leg workouts involve much more glutes and hamstrings than quads.
Thank you for being so honest and informative. Unfortunately I found there isn’t that much good PT out there and I live in LA. The Drs always sent me to PT first. But it never worked then I had a partial replacement. My knees still hurt. Three years later, and many tries, I finally found good PT. That and a red light therapy knee wrap have made a big difference. Thanks again. I wish there was more physical therapist out there like you
I was following advice from a different vlog doing exercises and thought I was getting somewhere. Then one morning during my routine morning walk, the muscle around the knee sent out a very sharp pain that I couldn't relax. Since then, I've stopped doing those exercises but am continuing some form of morning walk each day. The muscle is still not back to normal but at least the pain has stopped. I was wondering whether I would have to face a knee replacement but turned to your vlog and think that it isn't the answer. I will continue to follow your videos as I used to be a good daily walker and haven't had that for several years after a fall added further damage to my knee area. Thanks for your videos.
I've had rotator cuff surgery knee scopes and spinal fusion surgery. My TKR was the toughest to recover from!! I do have Rheumatoid Arthritis to be fair but knee recovery was brutal for first month 😬😳😞
I so totally agree. I just do my PT exercises forever! My knees were horrible in 2009. I refused to get xray or MRI so no one told me I had to get surgery so I never did. I now have no issues with my knee. Same thing with hips. I’m 77.
Uk here. At 79 I have bad osteoarthritis in both knees it turns out. The right I knew about but managed ok. What I thought was my good knee the left with no problems, overnight gave me excruciating day and night pain. Instinctively I knew it was caused by using my quads in a situation of caring and sitting tensed for a long time.( realized after). Also my fibromyalgia added to it. So, I will be taking your advice as surgery a no no. A friend age 56 just had it!!! Not good. Thank you for your videos.

I had been in a motorcycle accident. The screw in my knee over 30 yrs did so much damage I had to have TKR. So much better now, but with all the damage I had, it took 5 yrs before I fully felt the benefit. But I could put my feet together for the first time since 1974 the day I had the surgery in 2008. Now i’ve injured the other knee.
This is good advice ! I have RA but my knees are fortunately okay. I know 4 people who have had knee surgery and at least 2 of them cant kneel any more, one of them needs assistance to get up off the floor if he were to fall over. I have a hip resurfacing and that gives no trouble whatsoever after 12 years but the hip is very simple compared to the knee joint.
I had both of my knees xrayed again today, in fact as my osteoarthritis is really bad now, extremely bad. I'm walking with a cane now but I still do my exercises as best as possible for the pain I'm in.
I have bone on bone both knees. For a month I have been using castor oil every night and I feel an improvement! What is your view on this treatment? I think it’s working!

Such good information! I always elect for the least invasive treatment. I had a knee unexpectedly totally collapse on me. After 6 weeks of physical therapy, which included daily home exercises, I have had no further problems.
Seven months ago I went to the emergency room while having a heart attack. They tested me for 7 hours on what looked like a runway to surgery. There were things they could have done for the pain and to help the body.... they did nothing except 4 baby aspirin. Not even the bottom line of magnesium injections and I'm sure there could have been other natural remedies to help the body along during the trauma. They did not know that the position that can help reduce heart pain is kneeling on the floor and hanging over the side of the bed. I walked out under the threat of death. I'm telling this story because you basically asked "where is the help outside of surgery."

Wailing differently has helped my knee a lot; to the point where I now believe that walking wrongly might have caused the arthritis in the first place.
Had a replacement 2.5 years ago almost age 69. Long story but a replacement had never been on my radar, which makes it even worse as it’s been pretty much a disaster. Just saw a doc different from surgery doc and he said there’s a new thing to try - some kind of nerve block done by pain doc - he said sometimes the pain is from nerves, when the replacement looks fine structurally on x-Ray. I’ve even had an MRI of entire leg and patellar tendon because leg muscles hurt too, very sharp pain on occasion. Thanks so much for reminding me of glutes - only one PT briefly mentioned that after I broke my femur 4years ago and I remembered that but still mostly go back to quads - guess that’s just so ingrained in us. From now on it’s glutes. I’ve never fully recovered from the femur break (the reason they tried the replacement because it was grade 4 on x-ray and was told “it all works together.” ) It wasn’t a good knee but no aching, burning, sharp pains, stiffness like I have now, but figured I’d probably need one eventually and figured better at 69 than 80. Anyone I knew or knew off who had TKR’s were very happy with them, thus sure wasn’t expecting such a difficult recovery and end up with worse knee than before. Thanks again for all this great info. I’ve never been very impressed with most PT - wish I’d had you.
@@terrymcnee3568 thanks for the suggestion but I have so much fatigue and also osteoporosis. I love swimming but need to use any energy I have for walking/lifting weights. Also I’m scared to be around wet surfaces after that fall. And a bathing suit at 71. Forget about it. just kidding. :-)
Hello, I love watching your videos. I had bone on bone knee reconstruction on the right side 2 years ago. The doctor said I was too young for total knee replacement. He said I would need a total knee replacement in 10-15 years from now. Omg 😲 I just had total hip replacement on the right as well, and I am recovering from it now. I have been putting off knee replacement. I asked my doctor about physical therapy and he said nothing will help you but a knee replacement. A little scary how much his office was pushing me to get a replacement.
Don’t trust doctors. Look at nutrition, no sugar, supplements like ReMag and ReMyte, Vit d3+k2, Nordic Naturals fish oil and exercise. Doctors and surgeons know nothing about nutrition. Good luck.

Please don't laugh but I use Veterinary Absorbine Liniment Gel topical analgesic on my knees 2 to 3 times a day for sore muscle and pain relief. This plus the knee exercises doctor suggests...after a few weeks...Great improvement...

Great advice. First time knowing the importance of glute and butt exercises. Agree that our health problems knowledge is so limited. Current medical training is about fixing the symptoms and not the root causes. They never talk about diet etc.
Right knee replacement for me was a positive life change and has improved my quality of life. It eliminated pain in my back and left knee since limping changed my gait and stance. Do extensive reading and consult with a trusted physician to determine if this is a solution for your situation.

Thank you for this post, you re-enforced my decisions. I had a slight tear in my meniscus, several months ago, VERY painful. Im in my 70’s so of course the first answer was surgery. However, I decided to try alternative treatments of acupuncture plus teins and a strong cbd/thc cream 1000/1000, ice and warm packs. It’s taken several months (very gimpy and painful) and lots of sitting (im very active). Ive returned from 3plus weeks in Europe (couldn’t take the thc cream 😢)with lots of walking, hills, cobblestones etc. my knee feels badly bruised at times, but Im glad I didn’t go straight to surgery. I work very hard to stay healthy and AWAY from doctors, except for yearly exams. This probably won’t work for everyone but I think it’s important to avoid invasive procedures like surgeries if possible. This is working for me, you need to do what works best for you.
I am 62 and believe I have beaten arthritis. I have a very clean diet and do ass to the grass squats on a slant board once a week holding onto a weight lifting machine for balance. I stretch my quads and tibs 1-3 times a week by doing the "sit on it stretch" where my butt rests on the backs of my calves on the floor. I use a mat for padding. Occasionally my glutes feel tight and I need to do additional stretching
I love your videos. I was a long distance runner for 36 years- I Love running but had a TKR last year- WORST thing I ever did- As you have mentioned- i have listened to my orthopedic surgeon(s)- build quads! I wish i had done some other tx - I am trying to save my left knee now! I am looking for other solutions. I have been trying to build my glutes- ITS HARD :)
As I listen to this pod cast- just hearing your example of the TKR surgeon saying " knee looks great". This has happened to me for one year now- still have pain and stiffness in that replaced knee- but I am told it is fine at every visit- no matter what I say.. :(

I run and cycle race, but for 20 years I’ve had trouble walking down steps, the steeper the worse it is. I also do weights but hate lunges and can’t do squats the way you say to do. I’ve been doing the baby squats using my glutes and they are fine. I expect I will never be able to go down very far, and I shall always have discomfort going down stairs but hope to improve it

I walk swim and gym what exercises are not advisable for my new hips ... please I'm so conscious of if I might be over doing...to do lunges or not....and other exercises...the Carnivore diet has given me so much energy ... thanks for your feedback ❤️

wow, I had instictivly going up stairs differently cause I know I'm quad dominate and trying to strenghten my hams to do the splits... I was wondering why my knee hurt less. guess I'll do more. 37 , inherit knee arthritis and after seeing why my dad went through, I learning on how to get things better now while I'm younger. might get the HA shot though?

Wish I could find pt close by that followed your way of thinking. I’m so distressed with my orthopedic doctor pressuring me to have both knees replaced. Then I went to the pt affiliated with the same practice and they just had me doing the same few exercises over and over. I think they are also told, well this person needs surgery so that’s it. It’s so depressing. 😢
Hi, glad u bring this up! I've seen an exercise program by ATG which makes my hair stand. I say to myself who ever takes these 100% serious, will end up in wheel chair because you are treating your joints and other parts of your body very rough, Not a Dr. I am a nurse. Are there studies/facts that these exercises prevent arthritis, maintain cartilage, don't hurt ligam ents, etc. Pls. give us ur feedback, tks.
I could not walk for a couple months. Was told to get knee replacement. I found you on line, started exercising, and found a good PT that thinks outside the box that helped me. I was walking without walker within a couple weeks. I found water exercising helped me focus on my glute muscles, and walking backwards in the water. You gave me hope and understanding of my problems. I am still slow, but I’m 70 years old, I can be slow. I don’t have to run marathons. I don’t want to risk knee surgery. I am happy with my progress, without surgery. God bless you!
@RuthRomer-xk9rn A comrade! The backwards walking in the water has helped me so much, too. I tried it on land but couldn’t even feel which muscles were and weren’t working. Yikes! Now I can do about 20 steps backwards, on the beach, but it sure fatigues me quickly! So the pool is my primary medium. Like you, I’m in my 70’s, so I don’t worry about speed. Just safety, endurance, and eventually easier stair mobility. Best wishes and success to you in your health quest!

@@tessajetta8146concentrate on using your glute muscles, think about them moving slowly at first, do exercises till they burn. Back leg kicks, side leg kicks, /and use pool noodle behind your knee,bending your knee, raising your knee and push down slowly, using those glutes!, also use it under your foot bend knee and push down, using glutes. You need to use the muscles on the side of your butt too, swing your leg to the side with noodle under your foot, cross it over the other leg, using those muscles. I found I can feel them working better in the water. Slow at first, concentrating on which muscles are working. It takes a few days or more to feel the muscles working. Exercising is not a quick fix, but really works over time with commitment.

Absolutely right! When I went to my new doctor with the MRI she said We can do cortisone every 3 months and then you'll need a near knee replacement. I went to 4 months of PT and I am doing fantastic!!! The butt muscles are the key! We worked our way to the glute exercises. That's where I Gain the most improvement. I have A complex torn meniscus and arthritis. No surgery. Don't plan on it
Dr. David is 💯 correct. movement…activate and strengthen glutes…and not with quad help..fix muscle imbalances….being consistent…age has nothing to do with it…I’m still hiking with ddd and hip arthritis….( hiking poles and daughter in tow lol) no surgeries for me at 87 ! I wish everyone well! 💕

My dad has had a bad knee since his early 30s. At age 88, he had a knee replacement, and the result has been fantastic. Hes finally walking freely with no pain. Wish he did this decades ago, but glad hes improved mobility for his remaining years.

I had a both knees replacement five weeks apart several years ago and I’m here to tell you it was the best thing I ever did for myself day one when they got you up to walk there was no pain I have titanium and I am thrilled with them

I had knee replacement almost 15 years ago. I am still not walking and my legs still hurt. They have since change the way they do surgery now. I became severely anemic, I got pneumonia, and MRSA! I went home 2 1/2 months after surgery, with more problems than I had before surgery!
This is my fear. I understand some ppl feel surgery helped them...and others it did not...made it worse. It's too finite of an "option" at this stage personally. You cant go back once you do it...right?! We owe it to ourselves to try what we can to change lifestyles.
I suppose also it depends on each person's situation, when it's their last resort-nothing else worked, pain was too high...

It’s been a year since I watched your video to strengthen my gluts. It is a game changer. I’m able to tackle my stairs without pain. 71 here. The contrast was before following your instructions, I was in severe pain. My mother had knee replacements in both legs and suffered from the second one. Thank you. I was told 14.5yrs ago I need a dbl knee replacement[I'm in Canada], 6 orthopedic surgeons ALL said they'd replace my knees when I'm 65[only 2 knee replacements per life time in Canada], every person I know thats had a knee replaced said they were in more pain AFTER the replacement than before & all advized me to avoid the surgery. I've taken martial arts since 5yrs old, the info on butt exercises was very informative & I can easily do what you said as well as upper body exercises[I sit and lift weights when watching tv] I use a knee offloader brace when lifting anything heavy[feels like a mid evil torture device! [getting a new one asap] I've really noticed a difference having very good shoes with good arch support, much less pain. great info! I'll be checking out you're other videos!!! thx

For me you are amazing. Many years ago I had reconstruction surg on my L knee and was told I had to have really strong legs to hold it it place. Over 20 yrs I have had so much pain, swelling in now both knees. I believe it was from over compensation for not being able to bend my L knee. Over 6 months ago I found you and I am so grateful. I have been following up on your teaching. And I am amazed at the change in my knees and my hips also. When I get off track, I feel it. Thank you so much. My only wish is I would have found you sooner, but grateful I did. I have finally stopped falling and getting hurt, due to the wrong teaching on my knee. Thank you!!!

The surgeon planning for my double knee replacement, sent my CT scans to a company in Switzerland to make a 3D model of my knee . And because it is custom made for my knee, apparently recovery is easier. I live in Australia and under our healthcare system the operation and recovery process in respite care, are all free. Only 2 surgeons in my area are trained in this method.

I had a total knee replacement just 12months ago in Brisbane. I am so happy with the result of my surgery. I'm 72yrs of age.
I didn't want surgery.
I've been a Reg nurse for 45+ years. I tried every alternative.
I was doing pilates , swimming and physio exercises to try and "fix" my knee.
I followed all the Utube physio sites and still do. This one is great.
I got fit but no progress with my knee!
I did my research.
I got a a great surgeon. I did all the pre surgery and post surgery physio. You are part of a working team.
My new knee is fantastic. I often forget i've had the OP.

I have knee arthritis and have had meniscus tear surgery on both. Unsuccessful and probably caused more arthritis. I stopped eating bad carbs to cut down inflammation and I lost 60 lbs in past year. The knees were feeling so much better. Recently I started walking and to my surprise was able to walk for an hour with hardly no pain. Then I started walking our bridge which is quite steep. After about a week my knees have need extremely painful. Watching this video I think am probably using my quad muscles walking at an incline so what you are saying makes total sense. Thank you.

Dr David all I can add is this...your advice on the importance of strengthening glute muscles for the relieve of my sciatica and knee pain is stellar..and that it is a procedure and not a quick fixer is so very important!! Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. Castor oil helps my mild right knee pain and walking . I cut a small piece of old cotton shirt into about 6 square inch all four sides. I poured about two tbsps. of castor oil on the cloth and laid it on my knee bone and after laying it on my knee, I wear a dollar knee stretchable support .

@@francescag6889 I wear just a regular sneakers. I have a Nike walking shoes. I will tell you also something from Japanese Scientists findings about walking. When you, for example, go for a walk, make sure you walk 15 minutes speed walking and 15
minutes slow walking and then alternate for at least one hour. When you do this kind of walking, make sure you land your heel first and then toe. Heel, toe, heel, toe.
Then try to send and feel those vibrations and send it towards your legs and to your pelvic bones to prevent pelvic and hips problems in the future. The bones need vibrations and waking up those nerves. Minimize walking uphill. It’s not good for knee pain, walking up hill. You don’t want your quads grow more muscles , you need to grow more muscles on the butt areas. Just walk on flat ground .
The dollar stretchable will do. Just put the castor oil on a piece of cloth like what said before and wrap it with your stretchable. Tap your knee mildly for at least one minute everyday. It needs to wake up/stimulate the nerves. I learned it when I went to Japan. Keep up your waking.
I was referred to an Orthopaedic Surgeon by my family doctor before she retired seven years ago for my right shoulder problems. I said “NOOOOOOO!” WhenI went to Japan five years ago, I met someone and thought me what I’m telling you now. I walk everyday now. My knee pain is 98 percent gone and my shoulder pain is…what pain?!
Keep up your walking. It needs to be at least more than half an hour . Otherwise, you’re just wasting time.❤️❤️❤️

I had knee replacement in my worst knee and do not regret it because I can sleep at night(after six months after surgery)..but will not be getting the other knee done...
Some time before COVID I was getting problems with sciatica, but the wait to see a doctor on the NHS was about 6 weeks! I made an appointment with the doctor but decided that in the meantime I'd try alternate therapy. I was seen by an Acupuncture specialist. The idea that this could work seemed really unlikely, but he explained that sciatica isn't normally nerves trapped in the back, but muscles that put excessive pressure on the nerves coming out from the spine.
After the first session I wasn't cured, but somehow I felt less problem. After another two such sessions my sciatica had gone. Something similar happened when I got osteoarthritis, except that I went first to the acupuncture guy, and got that fixed too.
Possibly the most amazing improvement happened to my partner. Her knee more or less locked up - she needed a stick even in the house. She could only think of knee replacement, but I persuaded her to try acupuncture with the same guy and after a few sessions she suddenly said her pain had gone. We have both done numerous bike rides (no batteries involved!) since then!
The treatment this guy is describing is easy to obtain outside conventional health systems.

Very good information here. I have bone on bone in right knee and osteoarthriti but I still can walk, no chronic pain. Doctor already telling me I'm a candidate for TKR. All of what you said in what doctors will say is true, just offering the surgery or injections. No talk of muscle imbalance. You provide alot of good information. Wish I could see you for an appointment but for now, watching your videos does help. I want to improve my knees to do better and avoid surgery. Thank you.

Looking forward to the video. My left knee is bone on bone and has arthritis. I have had the injections in my knee recently and it has helped. five months ago I fell and broke my hip. It has healed well however, my knee is very angry because I could not use it for eight weeks With all the muscle loss I’m trying to build it back up and hopefully strengthen the knee like it was before I broke my hip. I really appreciate all the knowledge that you give us.

78yrs - I totally agree! All that was told to me!! After 15 months tkr, I am in big pain. Had second opinion and showed him also the two very sensitive areas. He said I have nerve damage. I totally wished I had never had the surgery 😔!!!!

I was told my two doctors that I needed a complet knee replacement. Then I noticed, I slept fine at night...knee didn't bother me. Not a lot of pain. I did get hydrolonic injections...help some. Knee is bone on bone. Then I tore my peroneal longus tendon in my foot and docs said I needed surgery. I'm old 70, have arthritis in my foot and bursitis in my hip as well as problems with a spinal fusion. I'm done with surgery...and do you know what, I'm managing, not taking pain meds except for a little Tylenol....and managing. I can't run a marathon and never have but also don't have to go through surgery!!!! Thank you for this channel. I have been helped by your videos!
Excellent thank you. Ive got more help from your videos than all the doctors Ive seen who treated me with almost robotic responses wear and tear your age your weight your knees are very big!!!! I had mild problems pre covid but did 3 dance classes and walked and gardened and managed fine. Then came 3 years constantly going up and down stairs maybe 30 times a day nursing aging very ill family at home and not getting to do my regular routine. Coupled with huge stress and two bereavements I ended up in constant pain. Doctors just threw pain meds at me that didnt help I got physio and got referred to a surgeon. He was horrifying. Told me that was it my knees were big I was too fat and come back in two years. I asked about exercise, and he didn't give me any help. My physio guided me to the pool, which has helped so much. I exercise in the water and move different ways for lengths. I keep active at home and still dance not every week but keep it up. Again its trial and error and its adapting activity to suit how the knees are. I lostv3 stones and have kept it off for over a year. Your videos have helped more than 3 doctors. And this one has reminded me of the important things. Im much better a lot stronger but again I have to accept what I have and not let it defeat me. Im hoping and confident well fairly that I wont go for surgery. Bone on bone is the other phrase thrown around too and again all presented as if youre finished I aint!!!! I can relate to this. Stress wrecked my health too. I had those issues from a few months before the vax. Several doctors told me it could be long Covid (probably had it before it became a pandemic). I believe the symptoms of stress (cortisol) and long Covid and/or vax are similar. Therefore : do vagus nerve yoga, every day. Calm down your system. Suppress the inflammation. Lose weight (keto + fasting 3 days a week).
I’ve also been exercising various muscles (including quads) and things got better but still having significant knee issues. Some exercises indeed make it worse (leg curls without a pillow under pelvis).
Then I had months without the pool but With a gym + a pro vibration plate, followed by back to pool HIIT and home vibration plate.
Conclusion is that gym + professional vibration plate+ PT exercises and pool HIIT exercises for an hour+ PT exercises both lead to a significant improvement. For the vibration, it’s important to not lock knees. Use it for massage as well (seated & lying down).
I hope this will help you to get better. It Is possible ! Don’t give up and be consistent.

Keep spreading your great information!! I mistakenly got a total knee replacement and I have regretted it every since. It took me a full year of my life to recover, and the results are not nearly as good as I had expected. Do everything you possibly can to avoid it.
I agree 💯. I was going through a popular online OA exercise program for nearly 2 years. I thought I was getting stronger and doing better, but little by little, I was actually worsening my muscle imbalances. I landed in the PT clinic with acute PF pain. Working through the very challenging glute exercises for 3 months, I'm shocked at how much better I feel. My both sides are more equalized than ever, and the pain is diminishing more and more. Now my challenge is trying to find a better exercise program that won't set me up for more injury.
I had my right knee replaced about 7 years ago my left has been bothering me about 2 years. My PT send me to a knee doctor. He xrayed left knee and right hip that bothers mr. He said I do not need a replacement with either. I have scoliosis and that pulls my right hip. I have had several shots in knee for pain. And I wear a knee pull on when I go for a walk. I now have a brace that i put on over the other and it stays in place.
I have a trainer at the gym twice a week for 30 minutes. She is teaching about butt and a lot of things you talked about. Great!
Can I see any if your programs to do here at home. I will be 77 in a month and I want to get stronger and straighter.

I believe that retraining the body's natural and functional movement patterns plays a big role in reducing knee arthritis and helps prevent knee replacement. The natural movements do not overuse the quads. One of the reasons why the quads are overused is because when people hurt their backs they were instructed to use their knees and keep their backs straight to lift things. Climbing stairs or doing single-leg workouts involve much more glutes and hamstrings than quads.

Thank you for being so honest and informative. Unfortunately I found there isn’t that much good PT out there and I live in LA. The Drs always sent me to PT first. But it never worked then I had a partial replacement. My knees still hurt. Three years later, and many tries, I finally found good PT. That and a red light therapy knee wrap have made a big difference. Thanks again. I wish there was more physical therapist out there like you
I was following advice from a different vlog doing exercises and thought I was getting somewhere. Then one morning during my routine morning walk, the muscle around the knee sent out a very sharp pain that I couldn't relax. Since then, I've stopped doing those exercises but am continuing some form of morning walk each day. The muscle is still not back to normal but at least the pain has stopped. I was wondering whether I would have to face a knee replacement but turned to your vlog and think that it isn't the answer. I will continue to follow your videos as I used to be a good daily walker and haven't had that for several years after a fall added further damage to my knee area. Thanks for your videos.

I've had rotator cuff surgery knee scopes and spinal fusion surgery. My TKR was the toughest to recover from!! I do have Rheumatoid Arthritis to be fair but knee recovery was brutal for first month 😬😳😞
I so totally agree. I just do my PT exercises forever! My knees were horrible in 2009. I refused to get xray or MRI so no one told me I had to get surgery so I never did. I now have no issues with my knee. Same thing with hips. I’m 77.
Uk here. At 79 I have bad osteoarthritis in both knees it turns out. The right I knew about but managed ok. What I thought was my good knee the left with no problems, overnight gave me excruciating day and night pain. Instinctively I knew it was caused by using my quads in a situation of caring and sitting tensed for a long time.( realized after). Also my fibromyalgia added to it.
So, I will be taking your advice as surgery a no no. A friend age 56 just had it!!! Not good. Thank you for your videos.

I had been in a motorcycle accident. The screw in my knee over 30 yrs did so much damage I had to have TKR. So much better now, but with all the damage I had, it took 5 yrs before I fully felt the benefit. But I could put my feet together for the first time since 1974 the day I had the surgery in 2008. Now i’ve injured the other knee.
So you need to really protect and strengthen both knees now?
This is good advice ! I have RA but my knees are fortunately okay. I know 4 people who have had knee surgery and at least 2 of them cant kneel any more, one of them needs assistance to get up off the floor if he were to fall over. I have a hip resurfacing and that gives no trouble whatsoever after 12 years but the hip is very simple compared to the knee joint.
I had both of my knees xrayed again today, in fact as my osteoarthritis is really bad now, extremely bad. I'm walking with a cane now but I still do my exercises as best as possible for the pain I'm in.
I have bone on bone both knees. For a month I have been using castor oil every night and I feel an improvement! What is your view on this treatment? I think it’s working!

Such good information! I always elect for the least invasive treatment. I had a knee unexpectedly totally collapse on me. After 6 weeks of physical therapy, which included daily home exercises, I have had no further problems.

Seven months ago I went to the emergency room while having a heart attack. They tested me for 7 hours on what looked like a runway to surgery. There were things they could have done for the pain and to help the body.... they did nothing except 4 baby aspirin. Not even the bottom line of magnesium injections and I'm sure there could have been other natural remedies to help the body along during the trauma. They did not know that the position that can help reduce heart pain is kneeling on the floor and hanging over the side of the bed. I walked out under the threat of death. I'm telling this story because you basically asked "where is the help outside of surgery."

Wailing differently has helped my knee a lot; to the point where I now believe that walking wrongly might have caused the arthritis in the first place.

Had a replacement 2.5 years ago almost age 69. Long story but a replacement had never been on my radar, which makes it even worse as it’s been pretty much a disaster. Just saw a doc different from surgery doc and he said there’s a new thing to try - some kind of nerve block done by pain doc - he said sometimes the pain is from nerves, when the replacement looks fine structurally on x-Ray. I’ve even had an MRI of entire leg and patellar tendon because leg muscles hurt too, very sharp pain on occasion. Thanks so much for reminding me of glutes - only one PT briefly mentioned that after I broke my femur 4years ago and I remembered that but still mostly go back to quads - guess that’s just so ingrained in us. From now on it’s glutes. I’ve never fully recovered from the femur break (the reason they tried the replacement because it was grade 4 on x-ray and was told “it all works together.” ) It wasn’t a good knee but no aching, burning, sharp pains, stiffness like I have now, but figured I’d probably need one eventually and figured better at 69 than 80. Anyone I knew or knew off who had TKR’s were very happy with them, thus sure wasn’t expecting such a difficult recovery and end up with worse knee than before. Thanks again for all this great info. I’ve never been very impressed with most PT - wish I’d had you.
Try swimming with or without flippers. Total body exercise without stain on joints.
@@terrymcnee3568 thanks for the suggestion but I have so much fatigue and also osteoporosis. I love swimming but need to use any energy I have for walking/lifting weights. Also I’m scared to be around wet surfaces after that fall. And a bathing suit at 71. Forget about it. just kidding. :-)

I have been putting off knee replacement. I asked my doctor about physical therapy and he said nothing will help you but a knee replacement. A little scary how much his office was pushing me to get a replacement.
Don’t trust doctors. Look at nutrition, no sugar, supplements like ReMag and ReMyte, Vit d3+k2, Nordic Naturals fish oil and exercise. Doctors and surgeons know nothing about nutrition. Good luck.

Please don't laugh but I use Veterinary Absorbine Liniment Gel topical analgesic on my knees 2 to 3 times a day for sore muscle and pain relief. This plus the knee exercises doctor suggests...after a few weeks...Great improvement...

Great advice. First time knowing the importance of glute and butt exercises. Agree that our health problems knowledge is so limited. Current medical training is about fixing the symptoms and not the root causes. They never talk about diet etc.

Right knee replacement for me was a positive life change and has improved my quality of life. It eliminated pain in my back and left knee since limping changed my gait and stance. Do extensive reading and consult with a trusted physician to determine if this is a solution for your situation.

However, I decided to try alternative treatments of acupuncture plus teins and a strong cbd/thc cream 1000/1000, ice and warm packs. It’s taken several months (very gimpy and painful) and lots of sitting (im very active). Ive returned from 3plus weeks in Europe (couldn’t take the thc cream 😢)with lots of walking, hills, cobblestones etc. my knee feels badly bruised at times, but Im glad I didn’t go straight to surgery. I work very hard to stay healthy and AWAY from doctors, except for yearly exams. This probably won’t work for everyone but I think it’s important to avoid invasive procedures like surgeries if possible. This is working for me, you need to do what works best for you.

I am 62 and believe I have beaten arthritis. I have a very clean diet and do ass to the grass squats on a slant board once a week holding onto a weight lifting machine for balance. I stretch my quads and tibs 1-3 times a week by doing the "sit on it stretch" where my butt rests on the backs of my calves on the floor. I use a mat for padding. Occasionally my glutes feel tight and I need to do additional stretching

I love your videos. I was a long distance runner for 36 years- I Love running but had a TKR last year- WORST thing I ever did- As you have mentioned- i have listened to my orthopedic surgeon(s)- build quads! I wish i had done some other tx - I am trying to save my left knee now! I am looking for other solutions. I have been trying to build my glutes- ITS HARD :)
As I listen to this pod cast- just hearing your example of the TKR surgeon saying " knee looks great". This has happened to me for one year now- still have pain and stiffness in that replaced knee- but I am told it is fine at every visit- no matter what I say.. :(

Need To Watch All Your Your Videos. I Have Stairs.When I Had Flair Ups, I Was Going Up And Down The Stairs Side Ways. Now I Go Forward.
My dad had both knees replaced and it worked just fine. Henever had knee trouble again.
I run and cycle race, but for 20 years I’ve had trouble walking down steps, the steeper the worse it is.
I also do weights but hate lunges and can’t do squats the way you say to do.
I’ve been doing the baby squats using my glutes and they are fine.
I expect I will never be able to go down very far, and I shall always have discomfort going down stairs but hope to improve it
I have the one bad knee. No pain. I always go down I step at a time. Prevents pain and surgery.
Dr it's been a little over a year had both hips replaced three months apart... thanks for this info ... I walk swim and gym what exercises are not advisable for my new hips ... please I'm so conscious of if I might be over doing...to do lunges or not....and other exercises...the Carnivore diet has given me so much energy ... thanks for your feedback ❤️

wow, I had instictivly going up stairs differently cause I know I'm quad dominate and trying to strenghten my hams to do the splits... I was wondering why my knee hurt less. guess I'll do more. 37 , inherit knee arthritis and after seeing why my dad went through, I learning on how to get things better now while I'm younger. might get the HA shot though?

Wish I could find pt close by that followed your way of thinking. I’m so distressed with my orthopedic doctor pressuring me to have both knees replaced. Then I went to the pt affiliated with the same practice and they just had me doing the same few exercises over and over. I think they are also told, well this person needs surgery so that’s it. It’s so depressing. 😢

Hi, glad u bring this up! I've seen an exercise program by ATG which makes my hair stand. I say to myself who ever takes these 100% serious, will end up in wheel chair because you are treating your joints and other parts of your body very rough, Not a Dr. I am a nurse. Are there studies/facts that these exercises prevent arthritis, maintain cartilage, don't hurt ligam
