Today I'm 1 month out from left knee replacement. The pain is much less and it isn't waking me up at night. Outpatient physical therapy is great. The first week after surgery I was so angry at the unrelenting pain. I called my surgeon and he increased my oxycodone temporarily from 10 to 15 mg every 4 hours. That carried me through the worst of it. Be sure you have a surgeon who will be available to your calls. I didn't know that his practice would not refill meds on weekends (!). Also make sure you have an elevated toilet seat. Didn't realize I would need one since I am fairly short, 5'3". Husband went and got me one with side bars and it made life so much easier.
Mam im from india im not a patient but still fir curiosity asking u.. How is d pain now mam is it gone completely
@@dolokigaming3719 Yes, the post operative pain is gone. I can walk well--I'm up to walking a mile a day with no pain. However, if I don't exercise enough the knee gets stiff. A little activity works it right out.
@@nursecathy123cat glad to hear u r doing fine.. Love from india mam.. Wish u live ur life without no pain anymore 🙏🏾🙏🏾🌹
I will be having a knee replacement surgery on Monday April 24 the watching this video helps me to get ready for my surgery Kim
Hi Kim, I'm 59 and going in this fall for right knee. Any tips on the stiffness? I know it's going to be really painful. But if I can have the info needed I think I can do this 😀
My mother’s surgery is next month. The video and comments are very uplifting and informative ❤. Wishing all that went through this a speedy recovery ❤
Best of luck to your mother!
I am 1 month post surgery and this video was one of the most accurate and informative. Although I did not see this particular video until my surgery, just wanted to let others that this is exactly what happened.
Can’t find a better clip all about TKR . Owe you a lot for this video gives me a clear pic of everything I require. God bless .Thank you is very small word . THANK YOU GUYS.
So happy to hear that!
This initially scared the bejaysus out of me but I watched it repeatedly and I was definitely more confident going into surgery. I took everything as gospel and my recovery has been going like gangbusters! Thank you for the time and your expertise.
Great to hear you're doing so well!
Glad to hear recovery is going well!
@@HorizonNB my 2nd surgery will be April 2023. Although I am not looking forward to the recovery process, I am looking forward to being recovered. Dr Burton is my hero.
Love your honesty
I’ve just watched it for the first time and yes it scared the bejeezuz out of me too but I’ll take your advice to watch it several times and be prepared for surgery ( in 3 weeks).
Thank you very thorough im scared anxious and cant wait till I'm on the other side of healing....
I am in late 70;s and heading for TKR in few weeks. Been watching lots videos. THANK YOU MUCH FOR THIS ONE. I started gathering up my med supplies. Especially helpful: firm cushions @ home/car. 2" above knee for vx things, etc etc
I found the information in this video very helpful.
I am into my 3rd week POS operation of a complete right knee replacement. I am on a lot of medication to reduce pain and blood thinner for blood clot. Staying positive, being patient ,safety conscious at all times to prevent falls ,twisting or jerking the injuried leg is of utmost importance.Doing the exercises each day is a must to ensure a good outcome for a good range of motion ,strength and stability.
Once again Thank you for providing such an informative video.
Thank you this has been very beneficial!
Thank you..an excellent video..I from Singaspore.
I'm going in for my second knee next week. I won't lie, the pain the first few weeks can seem unendurable, but suddenly you'll notice it's diminishing and the exercises get easier.
I'm getting scared mine us in 3days .the pain it manageable, did you do physical therapy all day at home
Worst pain I have had ever. In Poughkeepsie hospital and will be in margretville later today. Worse than childbirth
This is an excellent concise informative video. TY
Thank you , this is far more informative, easy to comprehend then what I received from the SCRIPPS System in San Diego .
I’ve had a TKA (Left) in 2019 and now a TKA (Right) in a week 7/1/2022 . It’s hard to fathom the difference from Scripps information and what’s in this video. Well done and great Job.
I will definitely save and reference this in the days and weeks to come .
Glad to hear this is helpful!
Fabulous, thank you gentlemen. Luba
I would like to thank you for this very informative information you really covered everything most things I didn’t know about or thought of. I really appreciate this video
Thank you so much for this video! My husband is in surgery right nom for knee replacement. Definitely will watch this together. Answers a lot of questions. 😊
I pray he is doing well🙏🏽

Highly educational, comprehensive information. A must for anyone going for TKR.
Thank you!
I am deathly afraid to do TKR
Thank you 👍
Very very helpful 👍
Very useful prior to surgery
I'm having a total knee replacement on April 8th. Your video has helped me so much. I wasn't aware of all the equipment I'd need. I'll be in touch with my doctor's office very soon.
So glad to hear this was helpful, wishing you the best for your operation and recovery!!
Very informative!

thankyou! so informative!
You're so welcome!
EXCELLENT. Thank you.
Very good information. I wish I read these valuable informations 3 weeks ago
Thank you SO very much for this video, it was VERY helpful for me to ease my spirit on what to expect and how to get along after surgery. I live in Germany, so I will have a week in hospital and then 3 weeks at a live-in rehab clinic. By the time I get back home, I should be able to function better then most. Thanks again!
I'm getting both done at the same time in December, 10 days in hospital, then 7 weeks at home (3rd floor, no elevator/lift!) with 10 sessions of PT, then 3 weeks at the rehab clinic. Then I HOPE back to work at my very active job.
Wow in the US, they send you home same day.

Thank you for the video, I'm having TKR on March 28th. I'm very nervous about it all.

What a thorough and informative video, thank you so much.
How long does it take to walk properly after a TKR?
Thanks Delores, glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting thank u
Just had my second knee replacement, 9 yrs after my first one at 43, due to OA..
The second one has been amazing, same surgeon as last one, but the advancement of knee replacements, I had the new Columbus implant..
2 weeks on, I'm already bending 120 degrees, and almost at full straightness, just waiting for my staples out..
All this was done with Epidural..
If it needs doing, get it done x
❤
Thank you. This was very informative and answered many questions.
So glad!
As a retired nurse, I must say this video was extremely well done. However, hospital stays vary from province to province. Nowadays, this surgery is day surgery or an overnight stay.
One night stay is ridiculous!
Thanks
Do you have a video for 2 knees?
Excellent video . I am about to get a full replacement on one and a partial on the other at the same time. I am curious how much this will change the recommendations in this video.
You brave woman. I’m like heck I probably fall down the end. I have no family or friends for that matter so is a lot more scary. The trauma of this will probably be the worse surgery I ever will have.
Me too -- I have to get both done at once in Dec. WISH they would have described that kind of scenario even once here. But .. what will be, will be.
@@upsidedownshellI am fortunate as do have a very good family, but I want to be independent after this op & look after myself, so like u watch these videos, gather all this good info. & prepare before surgery. Cook freeze food or get frozen meals ordered 24:31 You will be alright & once healed sufficiently don't let anything hold you back get out there & enjoy yrself, lot of good people to meet & befriend out there. Don't worry is best advice, life too short to stress about. Good luck all the best ❤
Thank you for this very comprehensive video.
Thanks for the viedio ..how long should the exercise be done after the surgery ..is it life long?
I had PVNS, and had the lump removed last week.
Stayed a week in hospital, the pain was horrendous, still cant bend my leg and sleeping is difficult..
That was great information, I will watch it over again before my surgery, Thank you.
Thanks Darlene, best of luck with your surgery!
Yeah well let's see what you have to say after surgery mine was hell
I am doing well after my surgery, a revision which was different than the normal one. They had to put two six inch rods on either side of the knee parts, it is different and still working on the bending but I am up to 126 degrees of bending and am working on the cane and walking a lone sometimes. I use the walker still too. It has been a long road but am walking. Thank you Docs for all your information and encouragement.
After seeing this video I feel like never having total knee replacement. I don’t know how true it is but it seems like a nightmare.
The information is very true for people who need surgery. No one feels like having it.
It feels like a nightmare…I have 3 months in . Still in physical therapy and swelling and pain still. I do my therapy at home as well. Do your research before any kind of surgery.. my doctor who did my knee replacement did a good job. But everyone is different in recovering
It's hard, but I don't know anyone who doesn't say it's the best thing they could have done for themselves and their future mobility and health. No operation could be called "a great and wonderful time"... but it's not like folks choose to get it done for fun -- I have no choice, if I want to be able to get around at all, keep working AND have a life after retirement....
Yes, we want to be able to be active👍
@@BJones-yw4dd Yes indeed. I chose NOT to live my last several years in a wheelchair.
to all who are to go through this operation or similar please ask questions to your GP your surgeon . Please get friends to help you transport to and from hospital and as a list of medications this last item is important as all the doctors know what you taking . Exercises and be mentally patient to endure pain of the procedure. Also one last point build mods around the house your bedroom kitchen and bathroom .Physiotherapy will help alot
take care all
How did anyone manage pain with oxycondone what dose they start with at 6 270lbs I am finding 5 mg of oxy just not cutting it
I am into 3rd week of a tkr.I have still pain at night
How close to surgery can you shave your leg?
Had left TKR 6 days ago. I'm on 5mg oxy and 2 extra strength Tylenol for pain and inflammation. Its tough but bearable.
Good information, Sir.
One of the better videos I've found -- but it unfortunately doesn't cover folks who get both knees replaced simultaneously. Guess I'll just have to find out "live". ;-)
Yikes! How did it go? Any tips for those just going through it one legged lol
When saying teeth complications what do you mean?
Had my TKR on March 14 and I’m still trying to get my knee to bend due to swelling I been icing it daily but I’m still having trouble in bending my knee it it due to the swelling I’m lost here can some one help me out I’m up and walking with a walker and a cane but the only problem I’m having is bending my knee
Try the exercise they showed using a towel to pull the lower leg up the bed. You can also use a towel behind the thigh to pull the leg while keeping the heel on the bed.
Dr one dout warrant. How many years
I am 4 days out and I cannot bend my knee at all! I cannot lift my leg either while lying down. My leg actually feels like dead weight, as if am trying to lift someone else's leg!
Yes, it very much does feel like a block of concrete. If they deadened a nerve in your leg like was done to mine, it will take a few days for it to revive. That's normal, so please know it will take a little time. It's been 3 wks for me.
I've heard that's a good description of how it feels right after this OP. And that one SHOULD NOT STOP TRYING to do every exercise. it's the only way to make it back to normal -- or close to it. I can confirm that from previous knee surgeries to repair tears, etc. Recovery takes Patience and HARD WORK. And patience has never been my strong suit -- but I've had to learn it after multiple surgeries. It is the only way.
How are you doing now?
I've been in the same situation but after 2weeks you'll be fine same with bending your knee
How is your knee now Iam 4 day in recovery.
I'm getting bilateral knee replacement surgery and I am worried about after surgery.
I don't see any help videos for bilateral.
Help please. I'm scared
Are you still pre- or are you now post-OP? If you're post-, I hope all went swimmingly for you!
I'm getting both of mine done in December. Yes, it will indeed be harder/scarier at first, but I am resolved to ask for help when (or before) I think I need it and to do my exercises -- also BEFORE surgery. The stronger the legs/quads are going into it, the quicker we can get that strength back. So I'm riding my bike daily and doing my exercises at home. Sending you healing vibes!!!
@@BJones-yw4dd they pushed my date to Oct 21. Two more weeks. I really can't wait to get it done.

Joint replacement is a failed treatment for arthritis and hence avoid totally.I am a enlightened patient of B/L TKR and life is living hell since surgery on 25 May 2015.
@Anita TKR surgery is the last surgery of knee so pl be careful as health will not come back. Are you a RA patient? As a thumb rule if you are recommended TKR surgery pl consult at least five Ortho Spl’s and there is real problem in movement only then go for surgery one at a time.Take some good glucosamine combination for six weeks, use sports shoes,do cycling by ex cycle at home;use double hinged knee support with patella open. On both knees , alternatively you can take inj with consultation of good Ortho spl, increase protein intake eggs or fish.ask good Physio therapist for mobilisation of knees excercise.pl take a very considered decision on joint replacement as it last option.regards
@Anita Don't go by one person's unfortunate experience when the majority have good and even terrific outcomes. Do you know & trust your surgeon? Have you asked him/her about their experience in performing this OP, what their previous patients' outcomes were?
Do your own due diligence and then do what is right for YOU. Is it still a scary prospect, even when everyone you know is delighted they had it done and wished they'd done it sooner? YEP! K-TEP is not to be taken lightly. That's why my excellent docs here in Austria have told me over the years to wait, wait, wait to get it done. But now? It's my only option. Am I looking forward to it? O Hell No. But do I want my work life to end prematurely? No. And my retirement will be hell if I DON't have functioning knees. So ...... ! GOOD LUCK!
Agree with all you wrote. Have to do thorough own research & watching these videos very informative. Be well prepared for hosputal befire & after op., have to be hopeful, pray that all will turn out for our benefit, have best outcome. Have to get right thinking, see in mind all be fine in every way. Aways be hopeful. Best of luck
So depressing and looks like pure hell after a knee replacement!
I agree
It is.
No hospital stay sent home same day. Pain medication doesn't help the pain. The doctor wouldn't up the dose. Had to deal with it.
😢i dare not do operation as make ppl troublesome to look after u so I try to do physio to lessen my knee pain.
Don’t put off the surgery just because you think people will need to take care of you. I live alone so I spent the night in the hospital after surgery and when I came home, I came home by myself, it is doable.
No need to be in pain. If I can do it, you can do it.
Terrible reactions from meds infections of wound allergic reaction of after surgery bandages extreme pain, couldn't move anywhere, the worst experience of my life three weeks into it and I still can't walk and can't bend my knee
9 months out of complete knee surgery an I’m not satisfied at all.

How to reduce swelling
Get your toes above your heart. The more you can reduce the swelling, the better you’ll feel.
WHAT A SHAME!!! I ONLY READ HERE NEGATIVE COMMENTS. I HAVE A BUNCH OF FRIENDS WHO WENT THROUGH TKR AND BILATERAL TKR AND GOT BACk THEIR LIVES. YES, IT’S PAINFUL, YES ITS NOT EASY BUT WORTH IT!!! NOTHING IS EASY IN LIFE BY THE WAY!!!
Absolutely agree.
You are right! I suffered for 3 years with my bad knee, getting all kinds of shots, cortisone, gell, and others. They worked for a couple of days, then the pain returned, and I would have to waite a couple of months until the insurance said I could get another. With the pain meds they have now a days, there is no reason to fear having the surgery. Wish I had done it sooner.
I’m two weeks out and I still cannot move this cement brick of a thigh. So I can’t do some of these exercises. This is frustrating and I feel like I’m falling behind
عملت عملية تبديل مفصل الركبة قبل شهر ونصف ولحد الان لم استطيع ثني ركبتي 90 درجة هل هذا طبيعي يادكتور وكم المدة التي استمر فيها على التمارين الرياضية
I see you didn't get a reply, so from what I know, it should improve over time.
I am one week out and can bend 78 degrees. My doctor told me I should be at 90 by 2 weeks.
@@AMMandrea123How are you doing now? Did you get your full bend
This is so scary. I do not have family for nothing. All gone husband has to work he has to collect vacation days. I be all alone. This isn’t happening.
Can you go to a rehab facility while you recover?
I'm single living in a 3rd floor walk-up, but there's nothing for it. Thank heaven for friends and caring colleagues.
Don’t do the total knee replacement just have the nerve cut and u will not have anymore pain I wish I would have been told this ahead of time.
That does not help every patient, like those of us who have zero cartilage left. And I'd bet cutting nerves leads to other serious problems, like imbalance, stumbling, falls ... Not feeling the natural, warning pains of arthritis & injuries like torn meniscii only means the joint damage wrought by grinding bone on bone will increase faster, ultimately making replacement even more urgent....
@@BJones-yw4dd Nine months ago I had the two medial nerves cut - it has helped quite a bit. I certainly do not have what you describe. My knee still feels somewhat achy, I have no problem with balance or falls - its not like that. I still am aware of my knee joint and that it isnt good - but the pain is duller than it used to be. I have good days and not so good days. I only did the medial side, the surgeon recommended doing the lateral nerve too but I thought I would do that later if I needed it. I do have some aches on that side, but they have never been very bad. My meniscus is torn medially and in shreds laterally, per my MRI. This nerve surgery isnt covered by insurance and is very expensive and one day if I live long enough will probably need a TKR. Its basically a delaying tactic since the two nerves I had cut would both be cut in a TKR anyway. The area of numbness btw is about the side of my palm, and I still feel pressure.
My wife have a knee replasment 7 27 22 I no have a any eqiment
:
Joint replacement for arthritis is failed treatment and should be avoided by all means. It is a life style surgery nothing urgent. I'm a victim myself of b/l Tkr, please guide.
What do you mean?
I hope you're doing better by now.
I’m a enlightened patient of bilateral TKR and life is living hell and it means losing your legs. It is a failed treatment for arthritis and avoid totally.
SO sorry you were one of the unlucky few! A BITTER disappointment I'm sure, when so many are happy and grateful later... So Sorry.
The way this man crossed his leg has me thinking he’s an actor…I can’t cross my legs like that or walk without cane. I’m waiting to be scheduled for tkr and thanks to OHIP ridiculous cutbacks, I think this will be another day surgery. No one looks forward to hospital stays but, being discharged on the same day is scary. After two arthroscopic shoulder repairs, I stayed overnight only because of sleep apnea. Ridiculous cutbacks…
Yeah, they would hardly follow a real patient around! It's also obvious that this is just for show, since he has no incision, AND at one point they explain that the bandages are just to show which leg was "operated".
That's just rediculous! Geez, I thought just a one day stay was rediculous. Best wishes!
Is drainage from the surgery area is normal after 9th day of surgery. I consulted my surgeon and he said it's the waste blood that should go out. Is anyone faced the same post surgery?
I would rather hear from actual patients as opposed to doctors ! While the physician may give good clinical advice, the patient can give "the real deal"
Please note that not everyone is a candidate for blood thinning medication. I have a blood clotting disorder and, therefore, can’t take any blood thinning medications. Just sayin’! 🙄
