Way back in 2009, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both my knees. I tried otc meds, therapy, different shoes, lots of different things with no improvement. I lost weight-although I was not extremely overweight to begin with, exercised more. No good. Over the years (I am 61 now) I have seen several different health professionals: orthopedic surgeons, arthritis specialists, pt people, etc. With each one, they wanted me to take pain meds. When I asked how that will help long term, except make the joint wear out faster if I use my knees more-they have nothing to say except that there aren’t any other options other than surgery. Your channel is the first place I have heard anyone say anything else.

Hi Sundayschoolnetwork, If you are having knee meniscus issues we have a playlist you might find helpful. You can access it here:

Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy thank you. I'm active, 68 y.o. female. I walk and bike. About 2 weeks ago I had a bit of pain in my left knee, which I've never had before. It got progressively worse over the next three days. So I started icing, elevated and rested it. There was a bit of swelling below the knee cap, so my daughter thought I should see a doctor, which I did. I'm reluctant to see doctors... 😂. Anyway, he took an x-ray and told me I have arthritic narrowing, which I could see was a bit more narrow than the right knee. He said I probably have a meniscus tear too. He recommended PT. I went to the first one. I'm debating going to the next one. I had started doing some of your glute exercises even before going to PT. I've been doing light biking and a little walking, plus the glute and quad exercises recommended at PT as well as on your channel. The pain has definitely lessened, but I still feel it slightly.

3 months, pain med free. Extended walking to 4 miles, using hiking poles. It's slow but I'm focussed on activating glutes not quads. Mentally I'm in a much better place, no longer in fear of the pain, no longer inhibited by pain, focussed externally on others rather than being consumed internally by pain.
Love the analogy, medical profession cutting the wire to the red light, bravo.

I stopped trusting doctors after my meniscus tear, I have been through cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications, PRP injections and when nothing worked they recommended surgery (which I rejected). I spent a fortune...not one of the 3 doctors I paid handsomely ever talked about PT, anti inflammatory diet, natural supplements or therapies like ayurveda or massages (both helped me a lot with the inflammation). This channel was a Godsend, after 1 month of exercises and the correct diet I started feeling better and the pain and noises and inflammation are now way way better and I almost walk properly. Time and patience and perseverance are the key, I know it is gonna take some more time to get back 100% but I am on the right path finally. Thanks

I can relate to everything you say here. 11 months ago I fell off a ladder at work, twisting my leg. X rays first showed an avulsion fracture of the 5th metartarsal. After 8 weeks in a moonboot I was sent to an orthopaedic surgeon. I complained to him that my knee (same leg ) was very painful and I had a fluid filled bulge at the back of it. He said he wouldn't look at it because the Work Insurer had only mentioned the foot, not the knee.
After another couple of weeks he said that I was healed. My foot still hurt to stand on it and my knee pain was awful. My Work Insurer said I had to go back to work. Long story short - 2 days before I was due to start I fell down in my backyard because my leg just gave way. An MRI showed a high grade medial root meniscus tear. I had been walking ( hobbling) on it for 3 months. Injections and then surgery followed. I am still in pain. My other knee is also very painful because I have favoured it for the past 11 months. The fracture took 9 months to grow back together. Anyway, I'm still in pain and have just had another MRI. The words knee replacement have been mentioned. I feel gaslit and not heard by these so-called experts. I am taking responsibility for my own health from now on. I had one session of Bowen Therapy which really helped the pain level. I am not killing myself with arduous physio sessions or trying to walk miles only to end up on the couch and unable to sleep because of the pain.
I will not be having further surgery.

@MichelleBirchley I hope you get a good workman's comp layer. Esp if they tell you that they won't pay for the knee. That is bs the flow of your body, with the fall from the ladder. Your whole body was effected. I'm going through the same thing right now.

I go to a well established knee clinic, named after the Dr., who is in his 70's and continues to see patients. I saw him 2 wks ago after flare up in my lesser osteoarthritic Lt knee. He told me "You didn't come in for the bad Rt knee bc you are not having any pain" I replied, " thats right," he said, " well I'm glad the Lt knee brought you in bc with the stiffness in this Rt knee that u have, you will begin to have PAIN!! He said the reason a person has pain is due to STIFFNESS!
Think we can all agree that stiffness is not good. I so want to get one of El Paso's video to him! He doesn't push surgery, his goal is to keep his patients off the surgical table- which i do appreciate!

      Tx for stiffness, I used
a device called IdealStretch for knee extension, also place back of ankle on foam roll with a wt below my knee to maintain forced downward pressure on it; I also attempt to touch my heel to buttock.
These exercises really do help! I reluctantly did a round of oral steroids for Lt knee swelling so I could
perform exercises better. You're correct, steroids are not a solution for long term.

Thanks for this valuable information . I m diagnosed with stage 4 arthritis and advised surgery . I only did native medication in Sri Lanka and stopped the regular physio exercises. And concentrated on strengthening the glutes while on bed and sitting . I'm slowly recovering from pain no oral medication except fish oil and vitamins and continuation of native therapy for over 3 months now (where they put a pack made of herbal medicine on the knee and bandaging it . Lastly they put a medication made with ghee to improve cartilage on the knee) . So I'm 56 and need to delay the surgery as much as possible . Here I'm now walking better and pain free and now climbing stairs very carefully and hopefully I will go for my long walks very soon .
Your advice really works and give hope to people who prefer alternative methods .

Yes, true. I am trying to do PT now for a 30 yr old stroke that left my left leg weaker, yet I ran for years. My only pain is after rowing or stationary bike, since I no longer run at 66. My knee ortho said I don't need new knees, and my meniscus tear is horizontal which will heal. He did a injection of hyaluronic acid, but I heard that this is only helps after like 5 times. I don't take pain pills or cortisone. I tried Stem cells on both knees, but was told it might help the right knee only as arthritus. But staying on top of it with PT is where I will see it "fixed" like David says.

Hey there, I’ve recently been in a lot of pain with osteoarthritis in my knees. Quite by accident, I ran across a video about earthing also known as grounding. I bought a grounding sheet and put it on my bed. Within 3 days, my knee pain was reduced by about 90% and the inflammation pretty much disappeared. There’s a lot of science behind this. I wondered if you could maybe do a little research on this and offer an insight. Honestly, this may help a lot of your viewers and compliment the incredible advice you already provide. I’m a total believer now in grounding and absolutely know it helped me.

Thanks! I have been diagnosed with "bone on bone" arthritis in both knees, but my goal is to stay off the operating table. Your videos have been very helpful and encouraging to me.
I am getting cortisone shots though and might get viscosupplementation injections if the cortisone shots quit working. These will temporarily help while I am working on walking better to correct muscle imbalances and continue to overcome multiple orthopedic birth defects. Plus an ACL that was torn more than 30 years ago.
Since walking has always been problematic for me anyway, learning a new way to walk is okay with me.

Hi Shirl, The best way to fix the muscle imbalance due to knee pain is to focus on glute strengthening. We have a playlist you might find helpful. You can access it here:
“Knee Pain Exercises, Stretches, Advice, & Tips Playlist”

Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Deep squats and deadlifts with substantial weight and i have 0 pain throughout the day.
In my opinion strength training through a FULL range of motion with perfect form(took me a long time to get there) and diet are the most important factors.
If i had listened to the "specialists" my knee would still be farked. I basically did the opposite of what they suggested.
And check out "knees over toes guy" his content is very useful. Also the "squat university" channels "touchdown squat" exercise is brilliant for knee rehab.

      Hi Devis,
We are so sorry to hear that you have been struggling with such persistent knee pain. Many people don’t realize how exhausting and frustrating it can be, especially when you’ve already tried so many treatments like injections without finding relief. We hope you can feel some relief soon.
If you’re interested, we have a Knee Arthritis Help Playlist on our UA-cam channel that might offer some helpful strategies. You can access it here:
      “Knee Arthritis Help”
      ua-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maa9YF-WmKLF7oI4VoczH8i.html
Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.
We’re wishing you all the best on your journey to feeling better. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

I have had knee pain since being a teenager. I am now 60 and I have had constant pain all that time. I have a condition called Hypermobility in my joints. Knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, wrists and some fingers. I live on pain meds with all meals. I want to get more active but it is a painful process. I think I may try strengthening my glutes before I get into my walking regime.

Hi Dr. David. I love your videos, they are so useful. My knee pain is getting better. I have posterior medial meniscus tear. Is surgery the only solution for complete tear? I got better after the tear in July 2024. Then I went to physical therapy to strengthen my knee. May be the balancing on a foam mat in the advanced level didn’t suit. It started hurting my knee pain, I had some swelling , difficulty bending the knees , I still have pain in the right side of the left knee. I am following your glute exercises, pain relief exercises and for the stiffness.
I would love to hear your suggestion.

What is your opinion on the red therapy lights?

    • @egon2012
      @egon2012 Місяць тому

In my experience, the red light therapy knocks down the pain, so I don't take medication, but the relief is temporary. Cold laser treatment (at home devices) has stimulated healing and improved range of motion. But you still need to do the exercises to deal with the muscle imbalance root cause. This experience is from my shoulder issues (rotator cuff partial tendon tear and secondary frozen shoulder).

However, if you’re experiencing symptoms of osteoarthritis in your knee, our Knee Arthritis Help Playlist might be a helpful place to start for natural strategies you can try at home.

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Місяць тому +2

      Hi Judy,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us. We’re so sorry to hear you’re dealing with that sciatica pain again-it’s tough to go through surgery only for the discomfort to return years later. We hope you can feel some relief soon. 🙏
For now, we’d recommend focusing on strengthening your glutes. Building glute strength can help stabilize your pelvis and ease some of the pressure on the sciatic nerve, which can make a big difference in your comfort. We have a sciatica help playlist you might find helpful. You can access it here:
      "Sciatica Pain Exercises & Stretches"
      ua-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maZPQPPtirn4oxj8oCPuIMR.html
Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.
You might also consider trying an inversion table to gently stretch your back and relieve some of that nerve pressure. Just a quick note-if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, or certain other health conditions, it may not be the best option for you, so please check with your doctor first to see if it’s right for you. We have a video for them that you might find helpful. You can access it here:
“Is an Inversion Table Helpful for Back Pain?”
      ua-cam.com/video/j61ImGQdFTM/v-deo.html
We hope you found this information helpful. Please feel free to reach out with any other questions, and we’d love to hear how you’re doing as you progress! 🙌 Take care.

Orthopods have had their way with my right knee and both shoulders a total of five times. My current doc wants to do the exact same surgery on my right shoulder as another doc did 20 years ago. He wants to fix a bicep tendon that has come out of the bicippital groove, fix a rotator cuff tear, and grind down a bone spur. He is already eyeballing my left knee... "total knee replacement" noises coming outta him, while the slobber dribbles down like shoestrings between his 2" lower canines.
Dang! I'm hoping I can fix them with autophagy, monoclonal antibodies, and stem cell therapy?
By the way, my lower glutes flap around behind me, making a slapping noise when they alternate hitting the back of my thighs.
I gotta hope your glutes exercises will do a lot more than fixing my knees.
Maybe I'll quit having to worry about getting arrested whenever I wear a swimsuit. 🙄
