I’m 84 and I’ve followed your teaching about how to walk using the glutes , spreading the legs a bit, turning the toes out a little & heel down first-and I’m walking better and pain free than I’ve ever done! After my second hip replacement, on my first walk down the hospital corridor the Physio said “ wow have you ever got a great walk!” I told her who taught me. I live in the U.K. - not near El Paso! Thank you very much!! ( I have used a cane but now I don’t need it anymore)
Same thing with me. I cancelled my knee operation though I was told I have no meniscus on one knee and hardly any in the other. My surgeon said he wouldnt even do one on me now! I was on crutches 5 years ago now do Tai Chi. Salsa ,zumba, swimming and walk ing every week with no pain.Just by doing the right exercises. The only thing I cant do is go down stairs but I'm working on it.
Really? In India and China, I have noticed village women walk like this and I used to wonder how they had evolved to this slightly peculiar gait. Now, I am wondering how they instinctively know this correct way! 😲
I love this man. I had pain in both knees and listened to some of his videos where he talked about the glute exercises being very important for knee pain. He explains it so well so i did the exercises and within days I was pain free. I still do them for maintenance and they always help if there is a twinge. He is so generous to share this knowledge freely
Yeah i used to get mad at my Do cyor when he used to tell me if i lose weight it would me tremendously. Well, even losing 10 lbs it has made a world of difference. I can walk and crouch now. I had to apologize because i though i knew better and because UA-cam videos were telling me otherwise.
This guy is the best.... I've been listening to his knee arthritis videos and glute exercises.... now he's saying....the toe muscles connected to the arch muscles....etc.etc....all the way to your neck muscles
Thank you! For the last 3 months I’ve been able to barely walk because of how painful and swollen my knees are. I also have flat feet. Within a week of focusing on glutes and feet I’m mostly pain free and swelling is much better. I still have a ways to go but now I have hope.

I’ve seen major changes in my pain level by just changing the way I walk (activating my gluts). It’s amazing. I was told I’d have to do both my knees but they won’t do the surgery until I loose weight. I started working out with a trainer 6 months ago and have done major quad exercises. Initially I was feeling great but increasingly, the knee pain has come back. I started just focusing on my walks and have felt no pain (from having pain for years). I told my trainer-no more quad exercises-only gluts and upper body from now on. Thanks for all the great and important information- it’s been a game changer for me.
I totally agree with you, no quad or hamstrings for me, and I have NO KNEE PAIN, after being on Lacinopril(a narcotic), which I only took one, and threw the rest out!!! Keep up the good work.
The same holds true for hip arthritis! I have both hip and knee arthritis, caused by heavy (mis)use during sports. Was considering surgery for both and then I heard Dr David talk about the muscle imbalance: Revelation! I realised how much stronger my quads were, compared to my glutes...and by rebalancing the whole system (glute strengthening exercices, quads stretching and deep tissue massage), not only did I avoid surgery but l'm back to practicing sports, mindfully this time! 😊 Gratitude and appreciation to Dr David for his precious help! 🙏💝
I'm so grateful I found you! I'm a walking example of what you described in Rule 6 - re foot muscles. I have very flat feet and developed a neuroma between my 3rd and 4th toes on the left in my early 30s. As a result my focus on walking, for years, was to do whatever it took to avoid pain there. That imbalance led to knee arthritis in that left knee. My limping secondary to the left knee pain led to severe arthritis in my R hip. It's all connected! And it's all about the glutes! LOL I have a completely new focus in life! I love my PT guy (I did end up having a hip replacement in June), but he's totally focused on quad strengthening when we're addressing my left knee pain. I think I'm going to end my therapeutic relationship with him. I now have my own personal PT expert right here! 🙂 (And yes, I have purchased your knee program). I don't know if you'll ever realize how many lives you've positively impacted, but we are all grateful!
After having had one knee replaced I will move heaven and earth to avoid having the other one done. All of David’s advice is the opposite of what I’ve been given so far and so I think it is definitely worth following - makes so much sense.

I just went to a physical therapist and explained to her what you said about glutes and specifically asked that we work on that. She said, well, first we strengthen the quads and then we'll talk. First and last visit to her! I'm really working to use glutes but find it very difficult to use the correct glute muscle when walking up stairs. I have walked up one step at a time with the same leading foot for so long that the other leg has lost the muscle power to do it but I'm working on it! Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to being pain-free again; some days are definitely better than others!

Join a gym with several glute machines. Back hyper extensions with head tucked into chest work well too. Once you start being able to feel a burn in your glutes, they will activate much more in your daily routine. Plenty of glute workout videos on UA-cam.
@epmanualphysicaltherapy I just fell 11/15/24 going up my stairs, and my right knee swelled up. The doctor prescribed methylprednisolone 4mg for 21 days and ice pack, and Tylenol and ibuprofen. I am lying here working my glutes and when I do the glute exercise on the affected leg with the knee injury I can feel the pressure lessen on that knee. Did I get the correct understand from one of your videos rather than ice the injury, heat would be better? I am worried about the side affects of the medicines. Would I be wrong in thinking I can effectively improve without the medicines by using the toe and glute exercise and heating pad to mitigate my injury?
I’m 72. Had patella tendon transfer surgery when I was 12 and 14. Of course there was no such thing as PT at that time. I’ve had knee problems ever since. Told 3 years ago I need knee replacement surgery- both knees “look” bad. I was using a walker and experiencing a lot of pain. I’ve had torn ankles so many times that I’ve been told there really isn’t anything I can do. Found the right podiatrist and at least have inserts for my hiking boots and I don’t turn my ankles any longer. Hiking boots are the only thing I wear because of all of the torn ankles. Seriously…weddings, funerals, parties, summer time…hiking boots. Adding to the knee and ankle issues now my second toe on both feet are crossing over and rubbing against my big toe. When I listen to your videos, I’m so envious of anyone who can see you in person, get evaluated, and back on their way to living a “normal” life. If only I lived in El Paso! I’ve had PT locally and have gotten help after multiple injuries, but now I’m finding out why the knee therapy didn’t help. After the knee replacement diagnosis, I learned from you how to walk with my feet slightly pointed outward. Boy, that helped tremendously. Today I’m learning how to activate my glutes. Hearing that I have to also strengthen my foot muscles makes so much sense…everything is connected. Thank you for sharing so much valuable information.
When my UK physiotherapist had no more ideas for me, he said to me, ' I am sorry that you will no longer be on my books , to be eligible for knee replacement. You will just have to wait until it gets worse, and then you will start the waiting game from scatch.' What!!!! As if, that was the reason I went for help. I am so pleased with Dr. David. I can now turn in bed without pain. Walk upstairs with both legs, walk downstairs with both legs. I am now increasing my daily walks with sticks and using my glutes. What a difference this knowledge has made to my life. ❤ Try what Dr. David says and never give up.
I am 33 female CNA for 14 years working on my feet lifting bending ect i fully tore my right acl and medial lateral meniscus one year ago. First 2 days it was loose but i never lost range of motion could always full bend straighten since injury. I could not have surgery for i got a PE 4 weeks after i tore my acl. A year later i wrap with ace wrap if i feel swelling but i got back to almost 100% taking my time and doing yard work all summer. I started raking leaves for a garden to moving rocks for landscape to mowing and walking a ton i was so scared at first for it was uncomfortable but it was more my mind was wanting to baby my knee. Yard works builds so much muscle and helped me so much! Still NO surgery its possible to heal! I would say my quads were always strong from the job i did but lifting rocks carrying leaves squatting ect with daily activity helps without you even realizing! Your videos help me so much after hearing i had to have surgery. I am not giving up!! Thank you!!
Ok here's my two centavos. This is ongoing. You have to keep it up. I have found that when I work my glutes and they are a bit sore , I do much better. Because they are talking to me a bit I can feel them and therefore am reminded to use them. Flex those glutes! This is gold! Just do what Dr. D says. It works!
Thank you for pointing that this isn’t an age related issue. I’m 39 and I having moderate level osteoarthritis and the first thing my doctor said was that I’m having age related disease which is irreversible. (He also recommended me to do walking, mild jogging, swimming and cycling.) Those words drained my mental health than my knee stiffness. As my kids are still schooling and that thought that I’m at the aging stage just gave me such a confusion and pulled me down. After seeing few of your videos I gained hope. Now all I need is a little bit more of self care.

But what you brought out, doctors don't tell you about muscle imbalance, or to work the glutes. They are only concentrating on quads. I have started some of the glute exercises from your videos. I don't have this pain really bad now. More like a discomfort. Since I started following some of the exercises from Dr. David, I have felt an improvement.
I just wanted to let you know that my knee pain has been reduced and my knees are so much better since I started increasing my glute strength and the toe exercise. It is truly amazing. I have flat feet and found that I now am squeezing my toes as I walk and it is so much easier. I hate taking pain meds and have tried so many different "online expert advice things" that did not work. Wish you were closer to where I live so I could meet directly with you to find what other things I could be (or should not be) doing to make life less painful. David, Thank you. 1 month ago I woke up and couldn’t walk . Had excruciating pain in my right knee. Your video was in my feed and I paid attention. It just never occurred to me that quads worked with knees, knees worked calves, etc. Now, I work my quads all day, off and on now and my knees are much better. I also gently exercise my calves, ankles, hamstrings and quads daily. Day by day I’ve improved. I just turned 70 and I will forever exercise my quads! And a special note for us ladies, I really think the daily quad workout is helping to strengthen my abdominal floor muscles. All the best to everyone!
Found this today. My knee has been painful and swollen for days. FIFTEEN MINUTES of on and off squeezing my glutes and it was better and now a few hours later it is 60-70% gone. Amazing.
I was on pain meds 24/7 and gritting my way through the day. Focussing on activating and strengthening glutes, stretching out my knees and then using hiking poles to walk to stop limping while walking. 8 months on, still using hiking poles but now largely pain med free, no longer cocerned about walking 3kms to the doctors, just spent 2 days fixing mums window sills, garden trellis, garden gate, extorior lights. I was sore at the end of each day but still didn't hit the meds. 8 months ago doing one of those would have taken 2 days. Dr. Davids advice has worked for me, hope it does for you.
My god I`m glad I found this Dr`s videos. I have bone on bone in my right knee plus I`m a good 100lbs overweight but too young for a knee replacement. I could barely walk even with a cane and my life was out of control and miserable. I did 8 weeks of physical therapy and when I finished that program I was shocked how well it worked, so I continued my at home exercises but I made the mistake of working my quads. 2 weeks of that and my knee was SHOT again! Luckily the youtube algorithm brought me here. I started trying the walk where Dr, David says to flex your glutes while walking. It was awkward at first but it got easier to do and in one day my knee is better after just one day. I can feel my glutes pulling my leg forward and then pushing my foot back as I step off it. I can vouch for the 'not age related' statement. Ive had arthritis and pain walking from the age if 50. I recently had an HTO for one leg it was excrutiating. I need my other leg done but i came here instead. If you do nothing else, watch this video! I walk and feel like an 80 year old. I have flat feet and did work out in the gym every day. My quads were ripped. Do i need to say more? I cant walk more than 100mtrs without excrutiating pain. Ive gained weight due to depression and not being mobile at 58. As a result of this video ive installed gym matting and exercise equipment to focus on my glute and core strength as well as joint flexibility exercises. Here's hoping that i can walk with less pain in the near future.
I am 75 and never had any joint pain....until after having the covid jag in May suddenly my knees have been varying degrees of torture. You are the best and I have had relief following your information Doctor disapproved of the insinuation that jag caused it and was dismissive saying because of my age I need to accept arthritis and take paracetamol ....which really annoyed me as I still think I'm 19 and feel better than I did at that age

I have bone on bone osteoarthritis in both knees and have been told I'm not a candidate for knee replacements surgery. I'm going to watch your videos and pray they'll help me. It's gotten so bad there's days I can't walk to the bathroom. I spend my life sitting on the couch and I'm so tired of that. My knees stay swollen. They're not too bad when I get up in the morning but within a hour or so they're killing me. Your advice sounds reasonable and like it'll work.
A couple of weeks ago I watched this same video for Knee bursitis. Since watching it I started flexing the glutes while sitting, and changed my walk to where the knee swings on its own (without the quad pulling it strait), forward, to place the foot on the ground. Then Focus on the glutes for holding the leg in place as it goes behind me for the next step. It looks like a slight limp. I hike a bunch, but have had to scale it back the last year due to knee bursitis. The worst when going uphill. Then there is IT band issues if going downhill to long, same knee. The only thing I changed was what you suggested in this video. Now, about 2 weeks later My knee is virtually pain free. I am able to bend the knee past the point of where the pain would have set in, still expecting to feel that pain. It is not 100% yet but the hikes are so much better without the pain. I can even use that leg to step up onto a high ledge, with no pain. It still has some pain if fully bent, but it used to be much more painful a little over halfway bent. I am now hoping this will eventually remove all the pain. Then there is the Achilles tendonitis, or possibly heal bursitis, going on as well in the other foot.
I had a massage, afterwards my knee started hurting as soon as I stood up! It's been more than a year now! Constant pain! I am going to try these exercises!
I’ve been looking for something like this for years trying to avoid surgery. I’ve been a seamstress many years and believe the sitting has contributed to my knee pain ? The pressure on the back of my thighs made it hard to get up from sitting. I’m at my wits end. Also trying different meds. Anti inflammatory diet, cortisone shots. It’s so crazy. I don’t understand. Some days I would have a good day and would rack my brain what I did different that day to feel better. It’s so frustrating. I pray for the day I can walk and live a normal life I’m only 55 . So true.I damaged mine by sitting in a tensed position giving my cat sub fluids for weeks. Sounds crazy but I know it was that. I am 79 and no way want a replacement.

I listen to everything you say . I will do exactly as you instructed. I have flat arches. I am 70 but have no knee problems and do not want any . I cannot do cardio exercises because of my chest but I try to do leg stretches in bed and will now concentrate on my glutes more. I can tighten my glutes but will now do it more. Thank you.

So glad I found your channel!!! I have knee osteoarthritis. I am able to activate my glutes separately from my quads but my quads were doing way to much work while walking. So I am in the process of building more strength in my quads and abdomen. Learning to walk again is really strange at 53 years old. 🤣

I now realize that my lifelong anxiety disorder and CPTSD have caused super strength in my quads from being held rigid all the time. I’ve always noticed that my quads and hands (from doing activities in a chair) are super strong in spite of my many debilitating illnesses, and that the rest of me is complete mush. That is why I can’t walk anymore. I do also have problems with my foot arches and my feet are pointing inwards. Now I will try to catch my tensing quads and bend my knees to release them! THANK YOU!

Couldnt agree more on the imbalance and the importance of finding balance. The BEST thing i did for "my" knee pain because i have very little cartilage from a car accident is walking backward. Within 2 weeks of doing so, my knee pain improved dramatically, and i can now walk around without issue. Now, im working on my core strength because i also have a mild scoliosis and been struggling. This is absolutely obtainable, but you have to focus on being committed.

The innocent looking exercise which consiste of dangling the legs , sitting on anything looking like à high chair, knes bent , saved me.since i try successfully a variety of exercises and i dont miss physios any longer

You hit the nail on the head! I went to a PT and she had me strengthening my quads! After two sessions I told her the exercises were hurting my knee and she said they weren't. Ridiculous but true. I stopped seeing her and am back here to learn how to strengthen my glutes!

Great video especially the glutes! I have seen video of people who can literally make their glutes dance. Their knees must be really well cared for. Thanks for educating us on how to get our muscles in balance. It could only help those of us with a balance problem. My left knee is stage 4 and the right is stage 3 according to my latest X-rays. So true, i developed mine in my 20s and found out i had sjogrens which affects joints and connective tissue. Now in my 40s still have knee pain occasionally and been on arthritis meds for a long time.

You are making alot of sense. I sometimes watch a guy from England, HT Physio, he kinda said the same thing. Tight thigh muscles pull up and tight calf muscles pull down therefor bone on bone. That statement clicked for me. Made sooo much sense.
Hi @silvijapakalne59, thanks for leaving a comment, we appreciate your question. Walking backwards is a quad dominant motion. Knees should go over toes when squatting, however, the important part is to just be sure you are predominantly using your glutes during squats and not your quads.
Me too! And my right patella has dislocated and my lower leg now faces like one o’clock when I try face my feet to the front, if that makes sense! Knocked knees are the worst 😢

I have HUGE inflammation in my feet. It feels like they're on fire and very sensitive to touch. Osteoarthritis of the knees and have avoided surgery thanks to you David.... Surgeons are single mindedly pro surgery and don't care about the impact thereafter. Follow the money...
I was put in the GLAD (started in Norway I think) through Bone and Joint Canada. An amazing program. Very similar to the exercises you recomment. It appalls me that people will say it's age related and exercise won't help.

Have you done a video on how to recover from knee dislocations. Would you use similar exercises that you share in this video? Your other videos have helped me with dealing with the discomfort I feel after several dislocations.
Doc I don't know if you realize that you are truly doing God's work. I needed this video today. My whole body has arthritis it seems. Knees, hips, shoulders, lower back. I just wanted to give up. I was a a distance runner and exmilitary. I was used to being active but now with bone on bone knees and excruciating pain everyday it has been difficult. This could be one of the most important videos on UA-cam. I could never understand why long walks or getting on the cardio bike tended to aggravate my knees. I thought I had very strong glutes and hamstrings.
ashwagandha, use it. From my experience, my pain went from 10 to 2. I have a tear in my meniscus and was in horrible pain. ashwagandha with the exercises I learned here helped me.

I lost 25 pounds and it's helped my knee arthritis considerably
Yeah i used to get mad at my Do cyor when he used to tell me if i lose weight it would me tremendously. Well, even losing 10 lbs it has made a world of difference. I can walk and crouch now. I had to apologize because i though i knew better and because UA-cam videos were telling me otherwise.

I’ve seen major changes in my pain level by just changing the way I walk (activating my gluts). It’s amazing. I was told I’d have to do both my knees but they won’t do the surgery until I loose weight. I started working out with a trainer 6 months ago and have done major quad exercises. Initially I was feeling great but increasingly, the knee pain has come back. I started just focusing on my walks and have felt no pain (from having pain for years). I told my trainer-no more quad exercises-only gluts and upper body from now on. Thanks for all the great and important information- it’s been a game changer for me.
I totally agree with you, no quad or hamstrings for me, and I have NO KNEE PAIN, after being on Lacinopril(a narcotic), which I only took one, and threw the rest out!!! Keep up the good work.

Look into the carnivore way of eating, many say they no longer need knee replacements.
The same holds true for hip arthritis! I have both hip and knee arthritis, caused by heavy (mis)use during sports. Was considering surgery for both and then I heard Dr David talk about the muscle imbalance: Revelation! I realised how much stronger my quads were, compared to my glutes...and by rebalancing the whole system (glute strengthening exercices, quads stretching and deep tissue massage), not only did I avoid surgery but l'm back to practicing sports, mindfully this time! 😊 Gratitude and appreciation to Dr David for his precious help! 🙏💝
I'm so grateful I found you! I'm a walking example of what you described in Rule 6 - re foot muscles. I have very flat feet and developed a neuroma between my 3rd and 4th toes on the left in my early 30s. As a result my focus on walking, for years, was to do whatever it took to avoid pain there. That imbalance led to knee arthritis in that left knee. My limping secondary to the left knee pain led to severe arthritis in my R hip. It's all connected! And it's all about the glutes! LOL I have a completely new focus in life! I love my PT guy (I did end up having a hip replacement in June), but he's totally focused on quad strengthening when we're addressing my left knee pain. I think I'm going to end my therapeutic relationship with him. I now have my own personal PT expert right here! 🙂 (And yes, I have purchased your knee program). I don't know if you'll ever realize how many lives you've positively impacted, but we are all grateful!
After having had one knee replaced I will move heaven and earth to avoid having the other one done. All of David’s advice is the opposite of what I’ve been given so far and so I think it is definitely worth following - makes so much sense.

I just went to a physical therapist and explained to her what you said about glutes and specifically asked that we work on that. She said, well, first we strengthen the quads and then we'll talk. First and last visit to her!
I'm really working to use glutes but find it very difficult to use the correct glute muscle when walking up stairs. I have walked up one step at a time with the same leading foot for so long that the other leg has lost the muscle power to do it but I'm working on it! Join a gym with several glute machines. Back hyper extensions with head tucked into chest work well too. Once you start being able to feel a burn in your glutes, they will activate much more in your daily routine. Plenty of glute workout videos on UA-cam.
@epmanualphysicaltherapy I just fell 11/15/24 going up my stairs, and my right knee swelled up. The doctor prescribed methylprednisolone 4mg for 21 days and ice pack, and Tylenol and ibuprofen. I am lying here working my glutes and when I do the glute exercise on the affected leg with the knee injury I can feel the pressure lessen on that knee. Did I get the correct understand from one of your videos rather than ice the injury, heat would be better?
I am worried about the side affects of the medicines. Would I be wrong in thinking I can effectively improve without the medicines by using the toe and glute exercise and heating pad to mitigate my injury?
I’m 72. Had patella tendon transfer surgery when I was 12 and 14. Of course there was no such thing as PT at that time. I’ve had knee problems ever since. Told 3 years ago I need knee replacement surgery- both knees “look” bad. I was using a walker and experiencing a lot of pain. I’ve had torn ankles so many times that I’ve been told there really isn’t anything I can do. Found the right podiatrist and at least have inserts for my hiking boots and I don’t turn my ankles any longer. Hiking boots are the only thing I wear because of all of the torn ankles. Seriously…weddings, funerals, parties, summer time…hiking boots. Adding to the knee and ankle issues now my second toe on both feet are crossing over and rubbing against my big toe. When I listen to your videos, I’m so envious of anyone who can see you in person, get evaluated, and back on their way to living a “normal” life. If only I lived in El Paso! I’ve had PT locally and have gotten help after multiple injuries, but now I’m finding out why the knee therapy didn’t help. After the knee replacement diagnosis, I learned from you how to walk with my feet slightly pointed outward. Boy, that helped tremendously. Today I’m learning how to activate my glutes. Hearing that I have to also strengthen my foot muscles makes so much sense…everything is connected. Thank you for sharing so much valuable information.
When my UK physiotherapist had no more ideas for me, he said to me, ' I am sorry that you will no longer be on my books , to be eligible for knee replacement. You will just have to wait until it gets worse, and then you will start the waiting game from scatch.'
What!!!! As if, that was the reason I went for help. I am so pleased with Dr. David. I can now turn in bed without pain. Walk upstairs with both legs, walk downstairs with both legs. I am now increasing my daily walks with sticks and using my glutes. What a difference this knowledge has made to my life.

I am 33 female CNA for 14 years working on my feet lifting bending ect i fully tore my right acl and medial lateral meniscus one year ago. First 2 days it was loose but i never lost range of motion could always full bend straighten since injury. I could not have surgery for i got a PE 4 weeks after i tore my acl. A year later i wrap with ace wrap if i feel swelling but i got back to almost 100% taking my time and doing yard work all summer. I started raking leaves for a garden to moving rocks for landscape to mowing and walking a ton i was so scared at first for it was uncomfortable but it was more my mind was wanting to baby my knee. Yard works builds so much muscle and helped me so much! Still NO surgery its possible to heal! I would say my quads were always strong from the job i did but lifting rocks carrying leaves squatting ect with daily activity helps without you even realizing! Your videos help me so much after hearing i had to have surgery. I am not giving up!! Thank you!!

Ok here's my two centavos. This is ongoing. You have to keep it up. I have found that when I work my glutes and they are a bit sore , I do much better. Because they are talking to me a bit I can feel them and therefore am reminded to use them. Flex those glutes! This is gold! Just do what Dr. D says. It works!
Thank you for pointing that this isn’t an age related issue. I’m 39 and I having moderate level osteoarthritis and the first thing my doctor said was that I’m having age related disease which is irreversible. (He also recommended me to do walking, mild jogging, swimming and cycling.) Those words drained my mental health than my knee stiffness. As my kids are still schooling and that thought that I’m at the aging stage just gave me such a confusion and pulled me down. After seeing few of your videos I gained hope. Now all I need is a little bit more of self care.

But what you brought out, doctors don't tell you about muscle imbalance, or to work the glutes. They are only concentrating on quads. I have started some of the glute exercises from your videos. I don't have this pain really bad now. More like a discomfort. Since I started following some of the exercises from Dr. David, I have felt an improvement.

I just wanted to let you know that my knee pain has been reduced and my knees are so much better since I started increasing my glute strength and the toe exercise. It is truly amazing. I have flat feet and found that I now am squeezing my toes as I walk and it is so much easier. I hate taking pain meds and have tried so many different "online expert advice things" that did not work. Wish you were closer to where I live so I could meet directly with you to find what other things I could be (or should not be) doing to make life less painful. David, Thank you. 1 month ago I woke up and couldn’t walk . Had excruciating pain in my right knee. Your video was in my feed and I paid attention. It just never occurred to me that quads worked with knees, knees worked calves, etc. Now, I work my quads all day, off and on now and my knees are much better. I also gently exercise my calves, ankles, hamstrings and quads daily. Day by day I’ve improved. I just turned 70 and I will forever exercise my quads! And a special note for us ladies, I really think the daily quad workout is helping to strengthen my abdominal floor muscles.

Found this today. My knee has been painful and swollen for days. FIFTEEN MINUTES of on and off squeezing my glutes and it was better and now a few hours later it is 60-70% gone. Amazing.

I was on pain meds 24/7 and gritting my way through the day. Focussing on activating and strengthening glutes, stretching out my knees and then using hiking poles to walk to stop limping while walking. 8 months on, still using hiking poles but now largely pain med free, no longer cocerned about walking 3kms to the doctors, just spent 2 days fixing mums window sills, garden trellis, garden gate, extorior lights. I was sore at the end of each day but still didn't hit the meds. 8 months ago doing one of those would have taken 2 days. Dr. Davids advice has worked for me, hope it does for you.
My god I`m glad I found this Dr`s videos.
I have bone on bone in my right knee plus I`m a good 100lbs overweight but too young for a knee replacement.
I could barely walk even with a cane and my life was out of control and miserable.
I did 8 weeks of physical therapy and when I finished that program I was shocked how well it worked, so I continued my at home exercises but I made the mistake of working my quads.
2 weeks of that and my knee was SHOT again!
Luckily the youtube algorithm brought me here.
I started trying the walk where Dr, David says to flex your glutes while walking.
It was awkward at first but it got easier to do and in one day my knee is better after just one day.
I can feel my glutes pulling my leg forward and then pushing my foot back as I step off it.

I walk and feel like an 80 year old. I have flat feet and did work out in the gym every day. My quads were ripped. Do i need to say more? I cant walk more than 100mtrs without excrutiating pain. Ive gained weight due to depression and not being mobile at 58.
As a result of this video ive installed gym matting and exercise equipment to focus on my glute and core strength as well as joint flexibility exercises.
Here's hoping that i can walk with less pain in the near future.

I have bone on bone osteoarthritis in both knees and have been told I'm not a candidate for knee replacements surgery. I'm going to watch your videos and pray they'll help me. It's gotten so bad there's days I can't walk to the bathroom. I spend my life sitting on the couch and I'm so tired of that. My knees stay swollen. A couple of weeks ago I watched this same video for Knee bursitis. Since watching it I started flexing the glutes while sitting, and changed my walk to where the knee swings on its own (without the quad pulling it strait), forward, to place the foot on the ground. Then Focus on the glutes for holding the leg in place as it goes behind me for the next step. It looks like a slight limp.
I hike a bunch, but have had to scale it back the last year due to knee bursitis. The worst when going uphill. Then there is IT band issues if going downhill to long, same knee. The only thing I changed was what you suggested in this video. Now, about 2 weeks later My knee is virtually pain free. I am able to bend the knee past the point of where the pain would have set in, still expecting to feel that pain. It is not 100% yet but the hikes are so much better without the pain. I can even use that leg to step up onto a high ledge, with no pain. It still has some pain if fully bent, but it used to be much more painful a little over halfway bent.
I am now hoping this will eventually remove all the pain. Then there is the Achilles tendonitis, or possibly heal bursitis, going on as well in the other foot.
I had a massage, afterwards my knee started hurting as soon as I stood up! It's been more than a year now! Constant pain! I am going to try these exercises!
I’ve been looking for something like this for years trying to avoid surgery. I’ve been a seamstress many years and believe the sitting has contributed to my knee pain ? The pressure on the back of my thighs made it hard to get up from sitting. I’m at my wits end. Also trying different meds. Anti inflammatory diet, cortisone shots. It’s so crazy. I don’t understand. Some days I would have a good day and would rack my brain what I did different that day to feel better. It’s so frustrating. I pray for the day I can walk and live a normal life I’m only 55 . So true.I damaged mine by sitting in a tensed position giving my cat sub fluids for weeks. Sounds crazy but I know it was that. I am 79 and no way want a replacement.

I cannot do cardio exercises because of my chest but I try to do leg stretches in bed and will now concentrate on my glutes more. I can tighten my glutes but will now do it more. Thank you.

So I am in the process of building more strength in my quads and abdomen. Learning to walk again is really strange at 53 years old. 🤣

My glutes really weak….need to start again . Will Try your ideas.
I now realize that my lifelong anxiety disorder and CPTSD have caused super strength in my quads from being held rigid all the time. I’ve always noticed that my quads and hands (from doing activities in a chair) are super strong in spite of my many debilitating illnesses, and that the rest of me is complete mush. That is why I can’t walk anymore. I do also have problems with my foot arches and my feet are pointing inwards. Now I will try to catch my tensing quads and bend my knees to release them! THANK YOU!

Couldnt agree more on the imbalance and the importance of finding balance.
The BEST thing i did for "my" knee pain because i have very little cartilage from a car accident is walking backward.
Within 2 weeks of doing so, my knee pain improved dramatically, and i can now walk around without issue. Now, im working on my core strength because i also have a mild scoliosis and been struggling.
This is absolutely obtainable, but you have to focus on being committed.
Excellent advices...you may have diagnosed my issue. I don't have arthritis but my knees hurt from time to time and my quads have been tight for ever.

You hit the nail on the head! I went to a PT and she had me strengthening my quads! After two sessions I told her the exercises were hurting my knee and she said they weren't. Ridiculous but true. I stopped seeing her and am back here to learn how to strengthen my glutes!

So true, i developed mine in my 20s and found out i had sjogrens which affects joints and connective tissue. Now in my 40s still have knee pain occasionally and been on arthritis meds for a long time.
I have had lot of frustration from physiotherapist to understand my kNEE issue and fix it. I am now following your instructions and hopefully will see a result. I have a Patella cartilage injury and Disc bulge in the lower back. I am going to start strengthening my glutes
You are making alot of sense. I sometimes watch a guy from England, HT Physio, he kinda said the same thing. Tight thigh muscles pull up and tight calf muscles pull down therefor bone on bone. That statement clicked for me. Made sooo much sense.

Hi @silvijapakalne59, thanks for leaving a comment, we appreciate your question. Walking backwards is a quad dominant motion. Knees should go over toes when squatting, however, the important part is to just be sure you are predominantly using your glutes during squats and not your quads.

Do you have a practical advice about how to engage the glutes while walking? I am a biker and have strong quads but my glutes don't engage while walking. Have pain due to meniscus tear and x-ray showed mild osteoarthritis.
I have HUGE inflammation in my feet. It feels like they're on fire and very sensitive to touch. Osteoarthritis of the knees and have avoided surgery thanks to you David.... Surgeons are single mindedly pro surgery and don't care about the impact thereafter. Follow the money...

I was put in the GLAD (started in Norway I think) through Bone and Joint Canada. An amazing program. Very similar to the exercises you recomment. It appalls me that people will say it's age related and exercise won't help.

Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.

Have you done a video on how to recover from knee dislocations. Would you use similar exercises that you share in this video? Your other videos have helped me with dealing with the discomfort I feel after several dislocations.
My patella has also dislocated… it’s moved to the right of my knee and has made my leg completely mis aligned, it looks horrible 😢

Doc I don't know if you realize that you are truly doing God's work. I needed this video today. My whole body has arthritis it seems. Knees, hips, shoulders, lower back. I just wanted to give up. I was a a distance runner and exmilitary. I was used to being active but now with bone on bone knees and excruciating pain everyday it has been difficult. I’m starting glute exercises today!! Can’t bend knees properly. I can walk for 15 min comfortably, then pain. Very painful sit-to-stand. Bad imbalance. I’m Hopeful for the glute exercises! Thank you!!

This could be one of the most important videos on UA-cam. I could never understand why long walks or getting on the cardio bike tended to aggravate my knees. I thought I had very strong glutes and hamstrings.

ashwagandha, use it. From my experience, my pain went from 10 to 2. I have a tear in my meniscus and was in horrible pain. ashwagandha with the exercises I learned here helped me.
