Funny enough, Robin Williams had a stipulation in his contract with Disney where he would *only* reprise his role as The Genie if the content was educational.
I really enjoyed this fully serious critique of Edutainment game design. So many kids game reviews brush things off as "just for kids", but kids deserve fun and well constructed games, whether or not they're educational.
I legit had to double take when I heard Robin Williams' voice here, at first thinking it was Jim Meskimen but then I remembered he only became Genie's voice in recent years. Like, how weird is it that they somehow managed to get him to reprise his role in a run-of-the-mill edutainment game but not for any bigger, more mainstream console games like Nasira's Revenge or Kingdom Hearts (especially this one with how it managed to get a quite a few big names)? If I had to guess, maybe Williams picked that game because it was such a small project and he probably didn't want his name to be used in a big market push again... or maybe he did it for the hell of it, I dunno.
Those games that felt like a product of a fever dream when looking back were the Pink Panther edutainment games for me. I had to look those up a couple years ago just to make sure they even existed.
I love the fact that this is the video where the swearing is uncensored, the Disney educational game video. If I have to guess why it's probably so that this video can not be marked as "For Kids" by UA-cam.
18:45 I guess this would be a good time to say I had to get my mom to take me out of the theater during Casper. And I almost didn’t make it through Hercules. No shame on childhood fears.
I imagine Robin Williams wasn't onboard for more than that one game because there was fallout after the movie released. If I remember correctly, I think it was over merchandising
I played the demo of this game. It featured the dungeon part with Genie and Iago. There was additional dialogue that was cut from the final game and there was no music to accompany the dungeon atmosphere making it actually creepy. The dialogue also didn't include the reverb so it sounded cleaner. The game was also darker in brightness than depicted here. I'll share some lines I clearly remember that include the cut dialogue: When Bizarrah sweeps everybody up with the flying hand, her line didn't start until after it disappeared. After which, she said: "I am now the master...and you are my slaves! Ahahahaha! COWER BEFORE THE MIGHTY BIZARRAH!" GENIE: "Oh my god...we're in some sort of chamber of horrors!" IAGO: "Chamber of horrors is right - we're in the palace dungeon! Do you know what all this humidity is gonna do to my feathers?" *starts shedding feathers* IAGO: "Ahh great, look at this...I'm already starting to molt." GENIE: "Paging Mr. Addin. Mr. Al Addin. Please pick up the white courtesy phone; you're wanted in the rumpus room. *supermarket speaker impression* BOB. PRICE CHECK ON PRUNES. BOB. PRICE CHECK ON PRUNES."
Well this is an interesting video as I am a big Aladdin fan and yet I never play any of those but did try a demo of Narisa's Revenge. This is very good looking back on those lost games. :) Also surprised you haven't mention Don Bluth when you discuss dark moments in kid's media, as that guy does well with his iconic dark/mature stuff in his classics.
HOly damn... Alladin math Quest.. I never remenber the name but the Spider was the one that click me to the memory that was hiden all these years... thank to unlock a forgoten memory
These games feel like they had ideas for movies or episodes of the Aladdin Series, but were unable to convince Disney to use them outside of in these games
I really enjoyed Nasira’s Revenge on PS1. It’s a pretty underrated game overall I think. It’s definitely not perfect by any means, but I like the unique story and it wasn’t based on any of the Aladdin movies at all. That’s what makes it stands out to me.
I’m a massive fan of kingdom hearts. I’m not sure if you are, but it’s definitely one of my favourite video game series ever. It’s far from perfect and can be convoluted at times, but it’s one of the many games that defined the PS2 for me.
The original riven id say is a good game to try, but the riven remaster im going to try today, it looks absolutely beautiful. Though i love the ps1 "moving water" trick they did back in 1997 its just great
All of these edicational games were weird, I remember playing ones not alladin based and still eager to shut them off as they seemed kinda unssetling to play or were very boring!
The mummy from math quest has a cool design. I’ve never seen the floating head with smoke trope applied to a mummy, not ghosts, so it’s pretty unique to me.
I missed out on so many edutainment games cause i was fine in the reading amd history department but awful at math and for me, math games were and are still awful. Damn you, child me! Why couldnt you have been worse with letters?!
There was sorta castle game that me and my sister would play on the PC when we were kids I remember feeding a crocodile and using a shield to bounce arrows away from your castle. Was this game real does anyone else remember 🤔
To be honest, this is a video that I've been holding off on releasing for a while. I pretty much knew that nobody was interested.
Yet here we are....
I actually remember playing this when I was younger. Also congrats on 100k
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take
Bruh I have watched multiple hours of retrospectives on edutainment games. Believe me my friend if you make it we will come.
Math Quest is one of the few times Robin Willaims came back to play Genie. It's interesting on that level alone.
Funny enough, Robin Williams had a stipulation in his contract with Disney where he would *only* reprise his role as The Genie if the content was educational.

God of War, Twisted Metal, and GTA to preschool Aladdin edutainment games.

From what I discovered. His contract didn't a,low him to reprise his role unless it was for educational purposes. This counts as educational. Haha
Mathquest was the shit back when i played it. The gameplay was fun and the visuals were cool, if a bit creepy at times.
"Myst style point and click education games": core memories unlocked.
Those games that felt like a product of a fever dream when looking back were the Pink Panther edutainment games for me. I had to look those up a couple years ago just to make sure they even existed.

Can’t wait for the Black retrospective.
Everytime i see your intro i get hungry
Should not have watched this before cooking lunch... Damn.
Why? Bacon is great for lunch.
Mmmmmm… *Bacon*
I used to have the Reading Quest one. Didn't know there was a math one, but I'm not surprised to learn it exists
18:45 I guess this would be a good time to say I had to get my mom to take me out of the theater during Casper. And I almost didn’t make it through Hercules. No shame on childhood fears.
This video was a bit different but still good. Should do more like this.
Oh you have 100k?! Congrats Tactical 🎉
Congratulations on hitting 100k.
I had math quest as a kid to. I nearly forgot this game existed.
20+ years on and Flubber is still a favorite movie of mine. RIP Robin Williams
I imagine Robin Williams wasn't onboard for more than that one game because there was fallout after the movie released. If I remember correctly, I think it was over merchandising
As a kid, there was a weird glitch with reading quest where the screen would turn black except for the stuff that moved.

Yo I had Alladin Reading Quest as a kid.....thanks for making me feel old man
There must be something in the water. So many people I follow are going back to edutainment games these last few months. Not a complaint mind you.
ayo! you got it! congrats on the 100k man :)

oh man, I had the Hercules one of these and thought it was just a fever dream.
Building a virtual PC is a feat itself. Trying to play games on it is a different beast entirely. (Also, clever thumbnail)
18:35 Is that a Precursor from Jak & Daxter?
HOly damn... Alladin math Quest.. I never remenber the name but the Spider was the one that click me to the memory that was hiden all these years... thank to unlock a forgoten memory

I saw the Aladdin fortune teller in the other video and guessed this would be next happy to see it because I played it as a kid
Congrats on 100k! :D
Loved watching Aladdin as a kid!
heyyy congrats on 100K 🎉
This reminds me when I bought The Lion King for Sega Mega Drive. Big mistake. lol
I have such fond memories of these games lol Only Aladdin I’ve ever experienced actually
Congratulations on 100K

OMFG I LOVED THESE GAMES AS A KID 🤯
19:21 That sounds just like leprechaun 3 when he's in Vegas creepy as shit as a kid

Made bacon and eggs as this dropped, what a wonderful day
I remember having played this as a tot myself.
The original riven id say is a good game to try, but the riven remaster im going to try today, it looks absolutely beautiful. Though i love the ps1 "moving water" trick they did back in 1997 its just great
sweet some edumatament games
Young blood, go further back to dos and play number munchers and super munchers
This game is a trip
Are upside down floating pyramids from some type of religion, history or book? Because Mario Odyssey has one too.
Operation Neptune and Oregon Trail next, please.
Did you play Chex Quest as a kid?
These games remind me of Wishbone and the Amazing Odyssey game
All of these edicational games were weird, I remember playing ones not alladin based and still eager to shut them off as they seemed kinda unssetling to play or were very boring!
Cool video
Nice!
LEGEND OF DRAGOON!!!!!
Aw man, now I miss Robin Williams and Gilbert Gottfried
The mummy from math quest has a cool design. I’ve never seen the floating head with smoke trope applied to a mummy, not ghosts, so it’s pretty unique to me.
Wahoowagaga
- Mario Mario
Maybe you should do a series on Jak and Daxter or a series on PS 3D platformers in general
You're new here, aren't you?
No, i have been subbed since around 2022 I think
Well, I don't really have any creative interest in the platformer genre right now, and I haven't for a while.
Eyo legend of dragoon video when???
Tbp!!
I missed out on so many edutainment games cause i was fine in the reading amd history department but awful at math and for me, math games were and are still awful. Damn you, child me! Why couldnt you have been worse with letters?!
Your childhood game is good and all but whats better is if you make that twisted metal black video
There was sorta castle game that me and my sister would play on the PC when we were kids I remember feeding a crocodile and using a shield to bounce arrows away from your castle. Was this game real does anyone else remember 🤔
