This Is a common issue, in Italy we have many FCA cars with that problem. There was a time in which Fiat choosed a polymer for those plastic bits that was bad engineered and behaved as a thermohardening polymer. Same happens to Fiat 1.4 16v engines airbox, that simply disintegrates and pieces of plastic can be sucked in the intake and into the engine. My Fiat Stilo 6 Speed (1.4 16v) has the airbox changed and thermically insulated to prevent this. If you have a FCA car (Fiat/Alfa/Lancia) from 2005-2012 check the plastic bits and replace if they behave like the plastic cam cover in the video
Neil this happened to my 159 last year. Engine warning light, read codes, both cams out of time. Garage checked and teeth had jumped by 3 teeth. I suspected the crumbly cam cover had fallen into the belt. I was very annoyed with that as I had just had to change the turbo. Found a good second hand cover. I will check this every year.
Funnily enough mine on my TBI although not as bad needed replacing too it was picked up on a service. So moral of the story is look after your car via services ect, yet another great video mate keep them comming.
I wont a 159 with a TBi as well, and I happened to burst one of my coolant hoses, there is no coolant level sensor in the expansion tank, which led to overheating and an expensive repair. Check the hoses anually! Or install some kind of sensor in the tank...
You might make your own cam cover by making a polyester outer side mold of the original one and then use that mold to make a full carbon cover Wouldnt be a big issue
Hey good vid, are you planning to do some separate videos on engines and what to look for when maintaining and what how to do stuff on different engines, some pro tips etc.? Thanks...
Seen that in a friends159 before, got a second hand one and used 303 plastic protectant spray and never had issues after that. But was long time ago and the was sold allready
Hi Neil, thanks for another great video, I'm really enjoying your channel! I've got a Giulietta and have seen your front bumper remove guide... Unfortunately there appears to be no Rear Bumper removal guide (or even rear light cluster removal guide!) anywhere on the internet :( Do you have any plans to possibly make one anytime soon? I'm sure the people of the internet would really appreciate it! Cheers!
To everyone talking about Alfa Romeo being unreliable, you english should look back at British Leyland before talking about reliability. This Is a bad issue but here in Italy, where the service network is specialized (because we have more Fiat/Alfa/Lancia cars around) no one has big problems, almost every issue Is well known and solved in a small trip to the mechanic. Many of the reliability issues with italian cars are a thing because the service network abroad Is not good (not talking about Italia Autos, he Is awesome)
Thanks for the warning. And thanks for your many videos. I will check my covers tomorrow when the daylight is back! Does this TBI also have oil in the spark plug wells?
Unfortunately also had this problem. My inlet camshaft was also out of position. But now it turned out that the ring on the camshaft had also shifted. A revised cylinder head has emerged but unfortunately still an error code...
Ok this adds up perfectly to the crappy coolant reservoirs and crappy low pressure fuel pump covers on the TBi. No matter of "if" it'll fail, but "when". And all of those seem to be age related, not mileage.
Hi Niel thank you very much for this video. I'm very interested since I have the exact same car and engine. Do you know if this is a wide spread issue?
